Wonderful family owned business. I have gone in to buy light bulbs, replace a broken antique globe and recently to design lighting for a complete remodel. The staff always greets me and offers to help. Recently I worked with Kathi and she was fantastic at identifying my likes and dislikes and put together an amazing array of fixtures for my ongoing remodel. Purchased a floor lamp a few years back from McNally because I like helping small businesses. When the bulbs burnt out, I called McNally twice and spoke to representatives so I could purchase new bulbs, or at least get information on how to purchase new bulbs; Each time I received a promise of a call back, but no follow-up occurred. I called again and left two voice messages, but again no one called me back. Maintaining customer loyalty is so important today for small businesses, especially with so much competition today. I was VERY disappointed in McNally Electric & Lighting. A few days ago I purchased a hanging lamp but when I got home, realized that it was way too large for the space. When I tried to return it and buy something smaller, I was told since it was on sale, no returns were possible. While I did realize it was a sale item, I was NEVER told that all sales were final. They are either unethical and intentionally did not tell me or they run a shabby business. Or both. There are a lot of lighting stores out there -- go someplace else. read more

There is little to explain a 35% re-stocking fee on returns. They have inventory. The people are kind enough. The store looks like a throw-back to the 80's. You order mostly from catalogs anyway. shish... But, be sure what you order from these people won't need to be returned. We made one little rookie mistake and needed to take back $500 worth of lights that should have been $350 to begin with, had to return them and the 35% return fee hit us for $175 dollars. Who knew choosing a lamp could be so difficult? I had been looking at lamps for weeks with no luck before I finally made it in here. Gabrielle was super helpful, she showed me some options and then gave me space to browse. Once I had narrowed it down to 2-3 she pulled them out turned them on and let me compare them side by side. In the end I finally found a floor lamp and a bonus matching table lamp I was happy with. She even wrapped up the glass pieces so they wouldn't break on my drive home. It's worth it to pass the big box stores where no one knows anything, and instead go to small businesses like this that can give expert advice based on their years of experience in business. Lori Sims provided excellent lighting advice based on the type of home we have, the location of lighting fixture outlets, color and style of fixtures, lumens (amount of light each fixture produces), and - very importantly - Title 24 requirements. Lori helped us to coordinate the lighting to make sure that things were to the right scale for the home that we have, and that there would be enough design continuity from room to room, so fixtures won't look haphazardly selected. Update: When an issue popped up with our new Hinkley chandelier, Lori emailed me back in a very timely manner, ascertained the problem, and is following up immediately with the manufacturer to make it right. read more

Experts in lighting a room to get the eGreat local biz. We had recessed lighting put in the ceiling. They do a layout according you your lighting needs in the entire area to ensure, for example, reading on the sofa. I will say however when the electrician who McNally's referred us to came to install, I liked the idea of having my entry light and the two in the living room aligned in a straight row and he Obliged me. My bad and his not reminding me about how that would change the lighting on the sofa. The small change in the layout made a big difference not for the good. So, I highly recommend sticking with the layout done by McNally's for best results. We also had a lamp that kept burning out all but one of the three way settings. It took taking it in a few times because it would work for a while then blow the bulb. They finally got it sorted out and only changed to initial repair fee. I so appreciate having a place to get repairs done. A good lamp will last for many many years. Ours is 20 years a still beautiful and going strong. read more

Be very careful if you are placing a large order for all of your lighting needs. Not all associates have the extensive experience and understanding of lighting, orders weren't placed on time like they said they would, and if you don't know the answer to a question, don't guess. It causes headaches later. A lot of back tracking, light bulbs did not fit in my pendants, etc. Very frustrating process and my thoughts are, I should have went to Home Depot. read more

Needed to replace light socket/switch to a higher-end lamp. Part could not be found at JK Electronics, Lowe's, Home Depot, Ace or local hardware. Bay Hardware suggested McNally's, I called, polite response and understandable directions. Arrived at store, knowledgeable, kind and rapid service got me the part. Besides getting fixtures from here a LONG time ago ( they have been around forever), this is where we go for all the lightbulbs ( and new LED replacements. The ONLY place for hard to find bulbs - especially picture frame lights. Tim is great - helped me find 2 hard to find bulbs - I bought a couple. Then gave me some advice on repairing a one of three set of sconces. There was dirt and debris preventing good contact - plus the inside needed tweaking ( power off of course!) Thanks Tim and team. this was the first time i visited McNally's. What a great local shop for all of your lighting needs. i always try to support our local businesses...when possible! from the outside...looks pretty empty but once inside....this place was busy! seemed like everyone was here for something or another..bulbs, fuse, reading lights, kitchen pendants, etc. they had it all! the shop is not very large, but big enough to see what you needed. they also have a pretty large counter with stools for you to sit and go though a zillion lighting books as well. if they don't have it on the showroom floor, they can find it for you in the product books. Jean was very helpful! As soon as i walked in the door, she asked all of the right questions to help narrow down my search. she knows a lot about lighting and the different types of chandeliers that would work best for my space. i always hated going into a "big box" hardware store where no one can answer any of my questions or they begin to read the details off of the box. come on. but not at McNally's!!! The consultants really know their stuff! Jean was able to tell me how big a chandelier should be, how long, how tall, how much from each ends of the table, how high off of the table, how much light i would need in the area etc. i showed her a few pictures of chandeliers that i found on the web and from there, she was able to find me several options in various books and within my price range. definitely going back here for all of my lighting needs!!! read more

McNally is the place for me when it comes to lighting. As mentioned by another reviewer, this is where you go when you need lighting expertise, not just any old lamp from a big box place. Sandy was incredible when I wanted lighting fixtures to put on the gateposts of my driveway gates - she had suggestions on size, types of bulbs, how to get the fixtures wired and installed properly....all of which was a challenge, as I had only a sketch of the gate I had yet to have built! The project all came out just great. Sandy also knew which companies shipped locally, which would take longer as they came from out of state, and what the return policy would be, ahead of time. Great advice. I came back to McNally when I renovated a lower level family room and wanted low-voltage cable lighting. Again Sandy was incredibly helpful, working with me on placement of the fixtures, factoring in the ceiling height, and also considering how many watts would be needed to light this dark 20'x21' room. She gave me some ideas about adding some cans and pendants in the soffit, recommending that maybe it would be good to have the electrician add a j-box for a pendant before the ceiling is drywalled up, just in case we wanted to add a pendant later. Good idea. Again knew who shipped from where, and how to get things in quickly. Sue took over from Sandy, and Jean had a hand in the process as well - all three were knowledgeable and responsive. I inherited my mother's crystal chandelier lamp, originally purchased in 1959. The lamp was accidentally fell and I needed to replace the bobeche. The best replacement bobeche didn't quite work. Needless to say I was heartbroken. The repairman asked me to give him a few days to come up with a solution. Honestly, no lighting store is going to have enough inventory to satisfy everyone's needs. They patiently let me look through every manufacturer's catalog, and helped pitching in to find the just right chandelier. The shipment arrived earlier than anticipated and when I picked it up, they spent so much time helping me resolve a potentially unusual installation issue. Brought my mogul lamp here almost 3 years ago for new socket and rewiring and 3 separate plastic candle covers. paid appx. $100 and was fine with that. Said socket broke, took in this week for repair. Was told about $50 for socket repair, (still high considering I purchased socket less than 3 years ago. Today I picked up and was told $75. When I asked the guy why so much, since they had replaced socket a few years ago, he told me their cost for socket was $5- and this time they used a medium socket which their cost was $7. Still confused as to the $68. labor fee for something that should take less than 30 minutes to repair. I prefer to support small local businesses but will not return here. read more

This will be yet another wonderful review of McNally's in Los Alamitos! I was in the store about eight months ago and saw a beautiful vintage butterfly electric fan in the store. I am now stuck at home in the condo after a recent foot surgery. It's getting hot and I have no way to get to the store and buy the fan. I called the store to see if they still had it and Tim who is a wonderful man that works there said that only did they have it but he would drop it off for me on the way home tonight! Bought a light for my hallway here and at first they seemed very helpful, but in the end, horrible customer service. I spoke with them on the phone when I was trying to find a hall light. They told me that I needed to go to their website and then call them back. Really difficult to see what a light really looks like online, but I did it anyway (big mistake). I ordered it...waited 2 weeks....went and picked it up...brought it home...hated it...called them and asked if I could return it (and would happily pay the return shipping), they said that I couldn't. What??? I can return lights to Home Depot...Lowes...really, almost anywhere...but not McNally's! Never again will I shop here, which is unfortunate since I love supporting local businesses. read more

Do not go here. Took a candelabra in for french wiring. Was told they could do it. Left it there for SIX WEEKS, called every week and was told they would get to it on saturday. Two days before a big charity event at my house called to find out that, and I am quoting here"someone called you and told you we couldn't do it". This did NOT EVER HAPPEN. I called 5 days earlier and was told it would be done this weekend. Called two other places in town, and am now having it wired with a very competent, courteous and service minded establishment. I need to replace a pull chair kitchen light in an old rental that my Grandfather built years ago. The service and quality of knowledge was unbelievable ! They did not have the part I needed but was quick in finding out where they could order it. I was clearly told that I could not return it once they ordered it.
