I had a friend who drove us up here from the city, which was not a bad drive at all. I chose this place mainly because they don't charge for parking and admission fee like other orchards that think they are a theme park. There were lots of apples to choose from and sample. Not sure if we were allowed to sample but that's what I'm accustomed to doing .you buy a bag at a flat rate and fill it up to the top with apples and that's it. It was a nice stroll for the day before we headed to the pumpkin blaze later that evening. The fresh apple cider donuts were delicious. I wanted to get my mom fresh apple cider but it had to be refrigerated asap so my mom missed out. lol there isn't a corn maze or tractor ride but it was still a fun family experience. Next time I'm in the city during fall I will definitely come back.

The many times we've stayed up in Woodstock, always make it a point to have a bite at the Bread Alone café- just because we know their breads/baked items are good. So when we noticed Bread Alone's table at this market, I was all over it. If Bread Alone isn't participating that particular Saturday, there are other Bread goods that you can get your hands on. With the exception of their Produce, there's also a Pickle & Olive table and Pastries too. This market is a decent fixture in these parts with basic essentials...... but it's really small. Seems like you can get away with a bigger selection over at the White Plains Farmer's Market. My only focus? The Bread Alone table (or any other baked goods).

No, I'm not a fan of that other place, just not impressed. More impressed with a place way further up county but it doesn't matter. Westchester Greenhouse makes the best Apple Pie. Yes, I have busted into this pie in the car many times. Forks ready. The pie is still hot, folks. Seasonally, the apple cider donuts are the best anywhere. Yes, better than That place. And that other one up there with the mazes, and bouncy houses and things you don't want or need or have to pay extra to walk on their property. Donuts. That's what that line is about. It moves fast. They hand you the box in the line, they are hot. And with more apple cider taste than those other places too. Apple pie and apple cider donuts. Oh and Wave Hill breads if you can't make it to the farmers markets. Everything else is a plus. Plants. Produce. Wreaths. It's all good. This place has been a seasonal staple for decades and with good reason. I find it hard to pick a fresh pie or food sometimes because the flies are all over everything. You can't wash fly poop off your pie. But the staff is friendly and welcoming and the place is generally well maintained. They hold events, have all kinds of seasonal activities for the public. I look forward to buying a basket of apples and other delicious treasures there every fall. It's great to see families, children having fun there...making new memories. This place has given a generation of wonderful memories to a lucky few who have shared their time there. It's truly an orchard, country store and a country experience.

And out of all the ones I visit, Hmart is my top favorite where I can get my Asian and most Tropical Fruit/Veggie groove on, my Bubble Tea or a chocolate pastry from Tous Les Jours, in one breath. But now, my signals are sort of crossed when I stopped by Tropical Farm. I'm getting fantastic prices (on some items) such as green and sweet plantains (Maduros), ñame (yuca relative), Caribbean Sweet Potato, yuca itself and so many other vegetables. Intense, prepackaged herbs and spices that are commonly used in the Caribbean and in other Latin American countries, are also stocked here- and not the tasteless McCormick products. Good to know I can purchase a nice bulk of Caribbean products for my mom (vegetables and condiments), when she comes over on occasions. I will still rely on Hmart- I just have another produce location added to my repertoire... for certain things.

I went specifically to procure pork from Thornwood Farms, which recently bailed out on the Ossining market (boo!!). I got my pork, and then some! A lavender farm stand makes Scarsdale its home, with beautiful gifts (sachets, etc.) and lavender scented baked goods. There are several produce stands, though only one vendor had (sort of pathetic looking) fruit. There is a fantastic cheese vendor where samples abound, and that day they were selling organic lamb spring rolls, which were delicious. There are two wineries, an Asian sauce vendor, a pickle vendor, and more. Surprisingly pleasant for tony Scarsdale! I'll be an occasional visitor.

The selection of breads and baked goods - trucked all the way from Meredith's Bakery in Kingston, N.Y. - was off to the side. The quiches and breads looked good, but I did not purchase any. I was after the produce. The overall selection was not very large, and I was disappointed. I was hoping for a wider selection of vegetables, and I didn't see any cheeses, jellies or honey on display for the customers, as the Cold Spring Farmers' Market offers. The larger tomatoes were nearly gone - only two were left when arrived, and one of the workers explained that they had a run on tomatoes that morning. I did choose some nice potatoes, shallots, grape tomatoes, nectarines and an onion, so I did not leave empty-handed, and my purchases totaled only $8, which is definitely less than I would have spent for the same amount of groceries at the supermarket. I had wanted to buy some mushrooms for sauteing as well, but declined when I saw that the cheapest ones on sale were $10/pound. What the hell? I'm giving the farmers' market two stars because the employee who rang up my purchases was really nice, and the grape tomatoes he suggested were delicious. Besides, they might have been having an off day. I plan on taking some trips back here to see how they fair as the summer season ends and fall kicks into gear. They're open through November, and hopefully they'll have some great pumpkins and squash.
