This was our second time at Meander's, this time we brought first time friends. From the initial greeting to us leaving every employee we encountered was very friendly and happy. We were able to sit at one of the tables overlooking the river - absolutely beautiful! All of our meals were excellent, from the starters, to the salads and the entres. I had the chocolate martini for my desert, so, so good. For our starters we had an array of items; Ahi tuna, cauliflower, ribs and one other. The tomahawk pork chop was huge and very tasteful. Our group of six ordered several appetizers to share. For my entree, I ordered the shrimp and clam cioppino sans house sausage since I don't eat pork. It was very flavorful! If you're in the area this is a MUST! They focus on getting as much ingredients from the local market. For starters, the asparagus and Brussel sprouts were mouthwatering. So delicious. This place is a true joy and a bit of a surprise for such a small town in such a remote area of Colorado. The riverside setting is beautiful and captures the essence of Pagosa. Their menu also reflects local sourcing and inspiration while boasting a world class wine list and delightful cocktail menu. There is a reason Meander was rated one of the top 50 restaurants in the States by the New York Times. Food, drinks, service, everything is top notch, second to none. You definitely need a reservation although I was a single and showed up at 5 and was able to get a seat at the bar - but only because there was one opening. If you are in Pagosa Springs (or even within an hour of town) you must go. One thing to consider - the apps / small plates are amazing. The winter citrus salad was a tangled mess of arugula and almost no citrus. A Neapolitan dessert cake looked like a prepackaged brownie and tasted old and stale. Lovely space and place to have dinner. The parking lot was a little tricky to get into and parking was extremely tight. The building is right off the main roadway and marked well. We did not have a reservation we walked in and were seated promptly. Service with a smile and a lot of hometown hospitality. Right along the river with beautiful views inside and out. The food was as good as it looked. I enjoyed the Coconut rice, vegetables and chicken. My friend enjoyed the steak. Everything arrived hot and fast. We even made room for desert. Like probably a lot of people, I ended up here because of the New York Times article and it did not disappoint! While they likely try to accommodate walk-ins, I had a reservation and was seated at the bar, and the bar was packed, so I wouldn't plan on just walking in. I will say that the barstools were a little uncomfortable by the end of the meal. The service was great and I enjoyed the server's cocktail recommendation. My favorite part of the meal was a seasonal salad with plums. I also really enjoyed the Palisade peach crumble for dessert. The presentation on everything was beautiful. We had high hopes based on the ratings. I have no idea what has caused such amazing ratings. The ambience and service were great but the food was so bad. The lobster toast was great, but did not taste at all like lobster or even faintly fishy--just avocado and vinaigrette The leek hand pie had a rock in it so they took out off the bill. The steak was so over salted it was hard to eat. The pork t-bone had no taste and was juicy but tough at the same time. Every single pickled element had zero balance and over everything it touched. Looks good on paper, but underdelivers. As a family traveling through Pagosa Springs, we were excited to try Meander Eatery. Unfortunately, it didn't live up to the hype -- or the price. The focaccia? More like dry wheat bread with herbs. Salads were overly dense or unbalanced (mine had so much basil it drowned out the burrata). My son's mac and cheese was salty with a strong cheese that didn't suit young tastebuds. Buttered noodles were oddly the favorite -- and that says a lot. We also shared a salmon dish (undercooked) and a grilled ham and cheese (fine, not great). The lobster avocado toast was the best thing we tried -- well-prepared and flavorful. Cocktails were hit or miss. My chai old fashioned was forgettable. The one saving grace? Excellent service. Overall: If you're a foodie traveling with kids or looking for a solid farm-to-table experience, this isn't the best choice. It looks stylish, but the flavors and value aren't there. read more

Maybe I should start by saying I was VERY excited to come here and perhaps my expectations were a little too high. Reddit drools over this place so we planned a trip down south to check it out and do some other stuff in the Pagosa area. Let me start by saying, the outdoor ambiance was lovely, right next to the river and super peaceful with quite the view. The foie gras mousse was unreal. Honestly one of the best things I've ever eaten! 10/10 on that. The wine selection was nice - we both had the chenin blanc. The rest of the food was quite good but probably wouldn't bring me back, based on the price point and didn't feel the options were as innovative as I had hoped. We had the pineapple upside down cake for dessert, which was a bit dry, but the ice cream with it was lovely. However, I was pretty bummed out by the service. Our server was friendly enough but very pushy with timing and trying to hurry us to order. Between dinner and dessert we had no less than 3 visits asking if we were ready to order yet. I was a server in finer dining establishments for years and I guess I expect my server to accommodate the pace my guest and I are desiring (if servers can't pick up on that, they shouldn't be serving). It felt like every question was an upsell or had an agenda, not what I'd expect for this caliber of restaurant. I get wanting to turn tables and ramp up the tab but this felt cheap and more like an Olive Garden kind of wait staff experience. I wanted to stay and have an additional dessert and some after dinner drinks but my guest was very irritated with the service, so we wrapped up more quickly than planned. The food was good, the atmosphere was overall pretty (loved the touch of the blankets for patio - very nice) but I was really bummed out with service. First time at Meander, we heard it was good, it was VERY good. Started off with the smoke cauliflower- excellent! Who would have known that cauliflower, mole, toasted almonds, queso fresco and salsa verde would taste so good together. The green salad with lemon poppy seed dressing was very good. For our entree we had the big ol ribeye and the cast iron chicken. Both were very good with great flavors. I had a martini that was made to perfection. We then paired our meal with a nice red cab. Yes the prices are on the pricey side, but you definitely get your monies worth. The ambiance is very nice, they really changed the interior from the previous restaurant, for the better. We wanted to go to a rather upscale restaurant for our romantic getaway to Pagosa Springs in lieu of Valentine's Day. This place was awesome. We met some locals at the Springs that also gave this place a big thumbs up, so we definitely knew this was the place to go :) The food was so good. We have never tried a farm to table place for some reason, and oh my gosh, we've been missing out. I really enjoy that they have different menu items depending on the season, and produce availability. The venison was good, but the duck was out of this world. So very good. The Meander is a total tourist trap. Reading some things we thought this would be an incredible fine dining experience. We came in around 515 pm. There is no waiting are at all. We were crammed in and I had to sit behind a table while waiting for a seat. We get to our table and our waiter who was incredible greeted us and gave a tiny pour of lemonade to celebrate our anniversary. After reading the menu we started to order. We each ordered a ribeye steak. 75 bucks each. We know beef is expensive currently but I'm expecting big things. The waiter asks if we want an appetizer and we were thinking too much food and they were very overpriced. The waiter says to us and I'm not kidding. If you tell me " local love" he can do half price appetizers. Why in the hell we weren't informed of this before we sat down by the hostess is the biggest red flag anyone would need coming to The Meander. TOURIST TRAP, I even called to see if they had a happy hour and was told no. Our 75 dollar steaks had so much fat in them. Believe me we know ribeyes have fat but these were like 30% of the weight of a 14 ounce 75 dollar ribeye. The food was terrible. They put some flavorless gravy over the steak which ruined mine and the side was this disgusting potato stack that was totally over cooked and mush with zero flavor. The ambiance on the river is incredible and they keep it very comfortable if you want to sit on the patio outside with good heaters, blankets, a perfect, intimate setting.
