They don't wrap the sandwiches properly, and the cheap paper bag stands no chance once it gets wet from the sauce on the sandwich (veal) I spent 24 dollars on 2 veal sandwiches and a cherry coke, and by the time I got home 10 minutes later, I was one sandwich short as it fell through the "take-out bag" ..... Ground 1 sandwich 0.... Time to figure it out M&B !!! But when a restaurant claims to only offer 2 items, law of averages says they will probably be pretty freaking amazing at both. And damn, do they not disappoint. Love the space, love the concept. Meat & Bread - says it all. Cool, hip, minimalist but with a great lively vibe at lunch time. Watch the well-dressed guys chop up some porchetta and I defy you not to order one. It is one tempting, juicy hunk of meat. The porchetta, that is :) What arrives is an average sized, well buttered sandwich with plenty of porchetta (complete with crispy skin) and salsa verde. Chewy, fresh bread.. but in honesty, I wasn't completely satsified. My first thought as I bite in is, "Roast pork!!" Except.. it's not as tasty as roast pork that can be found 5 minutes away in Chinatown. And to pay $8 for it, while not exorbitant, somehow doesn't seem right. Compared to Salumi or Paseo in Seattle.. those were satisfying, generously portioned sandwiches for maybe an extra $2. And that, I'm more OK with - go figure. But, I'm still giving this place 4 stars because it's a step in the right direction for Vancouver. We need more specialized offerings. I would probably return to try their grilled cheese. What's sexier, the sandwiches or the staff? It's a close one, but fortunately since Yelp is a kick-ass reviews website, I get to pick both! Let's start with the sandwiches: Oh yeah baby, grill me up a grilled cheese but good! Their grilled cheese sandwiches are perfection, but next time I am asking for no red onion. Makes it too spicy or something. I've also tried the Mexican beef special and it was savagely good. Be sure to order a drink to go with these sandwiches as they can be salty. If you order a side, you are looking to pay over $15, expensive but worth it. Be warned there is a queue at lunchtime, go for a late lunch or just be unemployed like me and go whenever ;-) And for the staff. Sigh, they are as tasty as their menu. Funky, friendly, and fabulous. My only complaint: they ask you what you want the second you walk in the door. I have menu panic, so I just get whatever they recommend. My husband and I were visiting Vancouver for 4 days and I went here twice. It was that good. The first time, I decided to go with the daily special, which was Fraser Valley Beef Chuck, Hoisin Glaze, Carrot Cabbage Slaw, Sriracha Mayo, I really enjoyed the sandwich. I would have preferred it a little more spicier. Some jalapenos would have been perfect. The 5th star is because of the bread. It was tasty, not too thick, and soft on the inside and a little crusty on the outside. I really wish I could have tried all of their sandwiches. As I was standing in line waiting for my sandwich, I noticed one of the employees slicing up the roasted pork and chopping the chicharron for their Porchetta sandwich. I almost started drooling. It was too late to change up my order, so it was at that moment I knew I had to return to Meat & Bread. So on our last day in Vancouver, we headed out to the location near Victory Square. The roasted pork looked just as good as it did the first time I saw it. As they were making my sandwich, the fat kid inside me wanted to ask for extra chicharron on the sandwich. Now that I look back, I wish had done so. Regardless, the Porchetta was amazing. The pork was juicy, tender, and plentiful! The chicharron added some crunch and saltiness. And then the salsa verde really helped tie it all together to provide one amazing combination of flavors. The Porchetta just might be the best sandwich I've ever had. I had such a great experience here! I popped in for a late-ish lunch, and there was a server at the door to greet me. He asked if I'd been in before (yes, but not this location) and guided me to the right spot for ordering. Similar to the other locations you can see your sandwich being prepared here, which is super cool. I ended up ordering the meatball sandwich, extra spicy, from a guy who should probably have been much more stressed than he was! After a crazy lunch rush, he was still smiley and pleasant - very impressive! It was an easy process to get my food, and it was deeeelicious! A nice heat to it, and giant balls of meaty goodness cut in half so they don't escape the sandwich! The cheese added a truly decadent touch. I didn't like my porchetta sandwich very much, but I think it's more to do with me than Meat and Bread. I've been wanting to try porchetta since my first visit to Italy several years ago, and never had the chance so when I visited Vancouver, I decided to come to Meat and Bread and see what all the fuss was about. My first attempt to visit them failed because I forgot they close at 5pm, so get here earlier! Second try started off well - I placed my sandwich order with the guy near the door, then moved down the counter to get my orange soda and pay. There's a few individual tables in the front corner, and then a giant communal table that takes up half of the restaurant floor space. The food came served on wooden planks/cutting boards and the decor is fairly industrial. The bread was crunchy and delicious, and I liked the spicy mustard on the side, but unfortunately as I continued to eat the pork itself, I started feeling queasy and I couldn't finish the sandwich. There are other menu items so when I visit Vancouver again, I might give this place another try and see if I can find something that agrees with me more. read more

The porchetta is awesome here and so is the soup. I had the meatball which was meh; hence the 4 stars. Decor was comparable to NY. Even when packed service was efficient; Stackhouse could take some lessons from this place. Didn't love the commune seating but the rest was perfect. What a cool place! Super simple menu with a few sandwiches to choose from. When I arrived, this place was packed with a line snaking out the door. Fortunately, it moved quickly and I was met with some super friendly people making awesome looking sandwiches. I ordered the grilled cheese. Seems simple, but damn that was probably the best grilled cheese I've had! The sauces definitely added to the experience. My friend got the porchetta and let me try it. Finally, a new addition to my list of lunch stops. I have been waiting for Meat & Bread to open their doors for weeks. When I stopped in yesterday, my patience was handsomely rewarded. What I love about Meat & Bread is that they've embraced the ethos of doing one thing and doing it really well. The offerings a limited, but well thought out. My curried lamb sandwich was the perfect meal for a dreary autumn day. Most important to me, they are serving on great, chewy bread, a huge improvement over the stuff being served at Salty Tongue. The sandwich was the perfect size, with a great balance of flavours and textures. While I love Finches for cold sandwiches and leafy greens, I am excited that Meat & Bread is offering a hot sandwich service for days when I want a heartier offering. As for the service and setup, the place is beautiful, and the staff are great. A word to the wise, sandwiches do sell out so if you have your heart set on an offering, get there before lunch rush. In regards to the comments that M&B is overpriced, I don't think so at all. The food is fresh and the quality is great. As a chef, I know that the overhead of restaurant space, staff and supplies is steep. Compared to what you get at Subway/Blenz/Artigiano for a $6-8 sandwich, M&B is a steal. Final word: M&B is currently cash only. Their debit/credit machine was supposed to arrive last week... the joys of setting up a new restaurant. But Meat & Bread delivers what they are all about: great meat and fantastic bread. Their signature porchetta was made fresh so they stayed nice and juicy on the inside with the oh so crunchy skin on the outside. Seriously they should just start selling porchetta skin sandwiches. Personally, i found meat and bread to be one of those really over rated sandwich shops that everyone seems to rave about. I may have went in with overly high expectations, nonetheless, my expectations were not met. Being raised in an asian family, the porcetta that made this place so famous taste very similar to roast pork that my mom gets at the chinese super market. The porcetta was decent, but it was definitely not the best i've had in Vancouver. I found the flavour to be overly salty and the cracklings not very crispy. The place is worth a visit because of all the hype, but definitely not a place I would consider as having the best sandwiches in the city. My suggestion, get some roast pork in Richmond and put it in a ciabatta bun and you will have something very similar if not better. read more

I'm a vegetarian, but I'd heard good things about their Grilled Cheese so a friend and I decided to give it a shot when we realized our actual destination wasn't open yet. The staff here are very inviting and friendly. I asked about the soup because I love to dip my grilled cheese, but it had chicken stock in it. The grilled cheese comes with onions in it and I'm not sure what kinds of cheese, but it was pretty good, and oozing with delicious delicious melty goodness. It comes on a neat little sandwich board with squirts of mustard and a spicy red sauce. I liked both the mustard and the spicy sauce and wished that the sandwich came with some more, because I ran out pretty quick and the squirts were on the small side. It was simple and tasty, and not healthy by any means. $7 seems like a reasonable price considering the cost of cheese. I also liked the little water station where you can serve yourself! read more

So after all the hype, I went expecting something amazing. The lunch time line up is always a good sign. The staff move people through extremely efficiently which means the long line doesn't mean a long wait. There is a host at the door welcoming you and explaining menu options which definitely impressed me. I felt I really had to try the Porchetta sandwich, and they had a potato soup which I tried as well. One LONG shared table is where everyone searches for a seat, there are a couple of cramped tables near the window. If you are looking for a private intimate place for a business meeting this is not the place. Like everyone else has said, the Porchetta was tasty and, while I'm sure far from healthy with all the salt and fat, I would go back for it again. I should have trusted my gut instinct on the Potato soup - I didn't finish it. Incredibly bland and uninteresting. Overall, I'd say this is a solid lunch place. I doubt you'd be unhappy. It's fantastic that you get to watch your sandwich made before your eyes-I'm not talking Subway made before your eyes but more like fresh ciabatta coming out of the oven, fresh hock of porchetta being peeled and cut before you type of fantastic. I literally watched the guy take the crispy part off of the porchetta (which by the way is Italian salty pork) and the Filipino in me was drooling (internally of course, it would be unhygienic otherwise). I was hoping he didn't take it off to throw it away - and thankfully he chopped it up and mixed it in with the rest of the porchetta into my sandwich. He also added a bit of salsa verde - perhaps to give it a pop of colour? Because there's no way something of 'nutritional value' was going into this sandwich! The Porchetta ($8) is served with a side of mustard but for the most part, I barely touched it. The only time I did was to add bite and mix up the greasy pork taste. The Porchetta is PACKED with tender pork, some fatty bits and the crispy part! I could barely hold this sandwich together and ended up picking up bits and munching it on their own. While I'm usually not a big fan of pork - this will be one of my only exceptions, it's ridiculously good but fairly greasy. I wish I had five napkins to take on this beast. As if they need another review... If you're in the mood for fatty pork head to Meat and Bread for the Porchetta. However I've tried a few other sandwiches here without much luck. The last one I tried was full of water and was a mess to eat (thankfully I ate it in the restaurant and not my office). The soups I've tried have all been nice. It is super busy here all day but they have a host who ushers you in and assures you he'll find you a seat at their community style table or bar. A brilliant example of the adage: do one thing and do it well. The sandwiches here are destination worthy. I stopped by with 3 companions and we ordered four sandwiches between us to share: the pork, the meatball, the turkey confit, and the grilled cheese. Some of us had slight favorites, but everyone agreed that ALL of them were really spectacular. Personally, I could not decide -- each one was the best while I was eating it -- and now will I have to order all of them every time? I can't imagine narrowing down the list to just one. Oh, the house-made mustard -- they squirt a little puddle on every sandwich board -- was amazing! It was especially great on the succulent grilled cheese. Less successful was the apple/beet salad, but stick to the sandwiches and you will find lunch nirvana. I've been here twice - once sharing the porchetta and special of the day - salted cod. Second time - sharing the porchetta and special of the day - braised lamb. I have to stay - STICK WITH THE MEAT. I don't think that the cod has ever come back and I congratulate them for that. I was truly disappointed with the lack of text from the cod. The fish was luke warm and mushy tasting. It was overall disappointing. The porchetta both the first and second time was delicious. I like the addition of the bit of crispy pork skin that loads your mouth with flavour and crunch, a great surprise if you didn't get it in your previous bite. The braised lamb was sooooo juicy and sooooo flavourful. It's one of those orgasms in your mouth kind of goodness. I always love the extra dollops of sauce that is given to you at the edge of your bread board.... and I always want more. The sodas are unique in every way... I forgot rose lemonade means ROSEWATER which I'm not a fan of, but if you are - then I recommend you getting it. The long communal table is cozy but you have to get there at a good time to get a seat. Be prepared to wait in a line during lunch time, but it moves pretty quickly. I think this place is definitely a treat-yourself kind of meal, because it isn't cheap - but well worth it's buck. read more

I like the simple concept: every day there are 4 sandwiches on the menu, a couple of sides, and a dessert. You line up, pick a sandwich, pick a side if you want one, they serve it on a slab of wood, and then you find a place to sit and eat. On the plus side, the sandwich was incredible. I had the porchetta, which is apparently the signature sandwich, but my friend had the special of the day which was some kind of roasted chicken and she said it was even better. My barley salad was pretty great too. For a sandwich and a side, it was $13 incl tax, which is not cheap but not extravagant either. The staff is pretty friendly, which is impressive under the pressure of a frenetic work environment and a huge lineup of hungry people (the lunch rush here is insane). One waitress broke a glass at our table and everybody immediately got another whole round of food brought out for free, not even a second thought given to it. I don't like the seating system. They want you to wait in line, get your food, pay for it, and THEN look for a place to sit, which is what some people do. Others immediately rush to a table to reserve it by leaving their belongings lying around. It's a busy restaurant, so the end result is a mad scramble to find a table with some people following the rules and others "saving" tons of seats when they won't even be there for ten minutes because they're still in line. The management needs to find a better way to deal with this - maybe by passing out number tickets that correspond to empty seats? Or something like that. I tried this place on the advice of urbanspoon. I can see the potential appeal of this place to many. My review here is influenced by my poor choice of sandwich, the porchetta. Had I known that it meant "fatty pork" I would have stayed far away. Upon entering we were greeted by a greater who did a good job of advertising the specials. As it was our first time and we entered before the rush though and we had no idea that we would need to line up in front of the sandwich carving area. Another greeter polite explained once he saw us milling about. The ordering system felt laisser faire, but once the crowd entered, its need became more apparent. I couldn't tell what the carver was cutting, but it looked good, so I asked for it (porchetta). I also saw the beet soup and wanted to try that too. The meal was served quickly and the cashier was pleasant and firmly up selling on the drinks. This place is expensive for what it serves, do your best to refrain. After one bite, I knew that I had picked the wrong sandwich. I hate eating grissle and my sandwich had a huge 1.5cm x 3 cm piece in it. It was pretty gross for me as I tried to chew it. In he end I gave up and quietly spit it into a napkin. Despite the fat content, I was hungry, so I pushed through the rest. Thank goodness for that mustard. The beet soup, while well done, was not to my palette either. Before leaving, I saw the grilled cheese sandwich and wished that I had had that instead. This place is great if you like the limited types of food that it serves. This is not a knock. What they do, they do well for their target clientele. I got tears in my eyes the first time I ate the porchetta (I'm not kidding) and I have been back about a dozen times. Each time I vow that I will try something new, but I am always lured by the unctuous, deliciously oily, crispy-crackly delight that is the pork roast. Outstanding. The chilly afternoon I visited Meat and Bread it was 4pm. I walked in and quickly scanned the 5 item menu but who was I kidding, I knew why I was there, the legendary porchetta sandwich. To my utter disappointment they had already ran out for the day and that left me winded. I was sincerely heartbroken and although the other couple items on their small menu looked delicious and patrons who poured in ordered it without question, I was there for the porchetta and that is all I wanted. So I decided to return the following day at 11:30am to avoid disappointment. What is porchetta? An Italian tradition! A carefully gutted/deboned body of a pig is then stuffed and heavily seasoned with herbs and salt, rolled up tight like you would a sleeping bag and trussed with the scored fat on the outside. The fat is also rubbed with salt in all the little slits to further yield a more spectacular crackling. It is traditionally spitted and roasted for an amazing low and slow result as the fat renders and continuously bastes the meat. Meat and Bread uses a delicious dry rub and roasts at 275 for 90 minutes then they blast the oven for the last 10-15 minutes to achieve that puffed, deep, magical golden brown crackling that some cherish so much they might even barter with it. The vessel for the porchetta is an in-house baked ciabatta bun. The meat is shaved off the porchetta and then re-seasoned with salt - a crucial move in the success of the end product. A sizeable heap is placed on the base of the ciabatta bun topped with a generous amount of crackling and the in-house made salsa verde. The first time I saw this assembly I was swallowing what seemed like mouthfuls of saliva. I ran out into Victory Square, sandwich in hand, root beer in the other. Took my first bite and was completely blown away. The meat was so flavourful, juicy and seasoned perfectly (extra seasoning after being sliced). Every couple bites you would get a warm fatty bite complimented by the crunchy crackling. The rich and fatty flavours all came together and were cut beautifully by the fresh salsa verde. Overall one of the best sandwiches I had ever had. They offer only a handful of items on their menu and they execute them very well. Moral of this review, if you are going to sell food and in this case sandwiches, make only a few and strive to make them perfect in every way. Easy 5 stars. read more

Eaten here a few times with co-workers. Long lines in the summer.. short but long lines in the winter. This place gets SLAMMED usually... It's all good. The regular witch is the Porcetta. I like it. My friend did not... he mentioned to the owner, who happened to ask us how we enjoyed the food, that there was a greater amount of fat in his sandwich. I noticed this too... He replied with an "OK". So, not sure if this will be fixed... maybe its part of the recipe for preparation? Pork is a fatty meat, don't get me wrong... but chewing on bubbalicious size pieces of the stuff unkowingly b/c you took a huge bite of the sandwich ain't cool. Beer is expensive,, but they want you in and out...so I get it. Mon-Fri 3-5 is sandwich and beer for $10. Good deal for an after work hunger crisis. Try it once, bring someone you like, you will like it. But in the end you may think.. wow, that was 8 bucks dude... A little on the expensive side. My friends and I came here after a long hour of shopping at Dressew. Well, I shopped, they rested at the Bean Around the World down the street. We were all happy. Our plans that night included the Hopscotch Festival but I knew, looking at the list of vendors, I definitely needed to pre-eat to help soak up the liquor goodness that was going to follow. I fell for the name first. Meat & Bread. No pretensions of what they serve. It's all meat and bread. And delicious. Meat & Bread & Delicious. Doesn't have the same ring but all true. We were there late in the day (didn't realize we'd gotten there so close to closing time; sorry to everyone who was working!) but they still had their beef sandwich, a meatball sandwich and their grilled cheese. I went with the beef sandwich because it was described as a roast beef meal on bread. THEY SPREAD MASHED POTATOES ON THE BREAD. How do I say no? My food weakness is strong. I had to ask them to leave off the peas and corn (allergies) but the carrot sauerkraut/slaw was so good, crispy and a little salty. Just delicious. My friends split a beef sandwich and the meatball sandwich. They loved the beef sandwich but found the meatball sandwich got a little bland near the end. Maybe not enough spicyness but they love a lot of heat in their food. They also offer really good sodas. I had the ginger lemonade, all tart and lightly gingery. A great add to the meal. Also the service. I don't know that I can say enough about the service. We wandered in there, all confused, and immediately a nice woman (I don't know her name, she was great) came up to us and explained their ordering system and the food choices. The men who dished up my food didn't have a lot to say but I was also distracted with my large Dressew purchase and juggling my purse. (I am a lot clumsy.) The decor is a little strange but comfortable, even with the long wooden table and the unpadded chairs. This may become part of my Dressew ritual. I do so love those. read more

Definitely worth the trip for a quick lunch sandwich here. Their offering is not huge, mostly just 3 choices of sandwiches (their famous one being the "Porchetta"(? pulled pork sandwich), another is the meatball and always a daily special one, they also only offer one soup and one salad every day. The pork was moist and soft, the re-baked pork skin chopped up adds a lot of crunchiness. Do not come here if you are counting calories though (fatty pork belly and skin). The sandwich size is pretty small, like a 6" @ subway, but their own freshly baked bread is dense and crunchy, and mustard drop on the side, all served on a wooden board makes the whole experience almost worth the $9 price tag. I would go back again to try their meatball and daily special sandwich at the downtown location. Though I do think $9 for a sandwich makes it a bit pricey. read more

Oh yum!! Meat & Bread sure knows their meat & bread LOL. The porchetta did not disappoint, it was amazing!! The pork was super tender and the bread was perfectly crunchy! I also got a "meatless" meatball sandwich hehe, basically 3 meatballs minus the bread! It still cost me $9 tho :( Butt, it was so worth it!! The meatballs were delish! I absolutely love Meat & Bread! The fellows who work here are super friendly and humorous. You can count on their recommendations on days you are indecisive, although it's hard not to love any of their sandwiches. This is elevated comfort food on a whole other level. read more
