I went to this restaurant for the first time with a friend of mine who's somewhat familiar with the place. We both ordered the porchetta with pork and beans soup. Now, we are really good friends and we like to chit chat about things, but after we got our order, we were dead silent for a while. I was to busy enjoying my food, I forgot my friend was sitting beside me. I think he was doing the same. Porchetta: I don't usually like fatty meats of any sort, especially pork, but this one just melted in the mouth like butter. It was full of flavor and moist. The bread... omg, the bread was the perfection combination with the meat (and the sauce). Soup: This wasn't really soupy, but more chili-like. It was thick, hearty, and full of flavor, but a little salty for my taste. I was impressed by how much meat was in my soup! I'd give it a 4/5, but my friend really enjoyed this dish though. AFTER we finished eating our food, we really started to discuss how yummy our lunch was. I think this pretty much says it all about the restaurant. Porchetta virgin no more! I wanted this slow-roasted cornucopia of pork to woo my tastebuds. In Italian ideally. So I was disgruntled to find myself agreeing with reviewers that found the meat to taste like an herbaceous spin on Chinese roast pork. The pork: a touch dry, a touch chewy & a touch one-sided w/ the seasoning (literally). The crackling: rubbery 1, crunchy 0. The ciabatta: sturdy. perhaps too much so for my jaw's liking. The staff: sweetie pies. in their own boyishly charming way of course. Since a power outage pushed back their opening time that morning, I circled their block a few times to kill time. Frequently enough for 1 of them made a point of thanking me for coming back when I finally went in to order! Bottomline: the proof is in the meat & bread. VIBE When I plan a trip, I like to part-plan and part-leave my findings up to the universe. I never researched Meat and Bread despite its press but able to stumble upon it while walking over to the Vancouver Convention Centre. It was karmic retribution, really. I knew from the meat hooks in the window and its sleek, long wooden tables and punching bag in the back that this place was special. When I arrived for lunch the next day, the line up was to the door. Business men, travelers, friends, Francophiles. Everyone was here. And somehow, the owner still managed to say hello to me. Wow. And I met people while having lunch, including another business owner, Bill of Nicli Pizza. Lovely! And it's all because of that big wooden table. (Though to be fair, I'm not sure how often that would happen in Toronto. I digress.) I ATE I came here in June (I'm a newbie Yelper catching up on some posts) and though the porchetta is what everyone seemed to order, I was in a meatball mood. So meatball sub with mozza cheese on top is what I ordered. Let's just say I still have dreams of the sauce dripping down the side of the focaccia (and also tasting those delicious flavours). The meat and sauce were perfectly flavoured. Their soup changes daily and it's the perfect accompaniment. It's not too big but full on flavor (unfortunately, I can't remember the soup I had). Been here countless of times already. Every single time I come here I am never disappointed with a delicious filled sandwich of meat. Recently, was here again with a coworker, and it is always great to be here. The line up might be coming out of establishment, but it goes by really fast. I love the mustard they make here, it is so delicious and so spicy. The regular Porchetta is what I usually come here for. But usually, they have specials on a weekly basis. Meat and Bread is located in the restored Flack Block at Hastings and Cambie and is a perfect fit for the Gastown neighborhood. From the long table or counter top seating to the antiqued mirrors and molding on the wall, from the tile and brick walls to the badger head on the wall - this place is styled perfectly for the product, the atmosphere, the neighborhood and to sit an enjoy delicious food. They have 3 sandwiches they offer each day: (1) Porchetta: pork loin with mouthwatering herbs wrapped in pork belly. (this is just what I remember from the top of my head. They guys there will do it more justice). They mentioned it is now a very popular street food in Italy. (2) Lamb: Sounded delicious, but they lost me at pork belly. The way the lamb sandwich is prepared and served will change (weekly or daily or at some point). (3) Grilled Cheese: Sound incredible (again lost me at pork belly), but I remember them saying multiple cheeses and carmelized onions. The sandwiches are $7-8 each. All appeared to be served an a ciabatta like bread. Then you can add a salad or soup. Today it was chickpea salad or butternut squash soup. I opted for the salad and it was AWESOME! I am not such a fan of the chickpeas, but this salad would keep me coming back time and time again. One of the guys mentioned the salad will change daily too. Soup or Salad is $4 (i think). Beer, Wine and Old Fashioned sodas are the beverage choices. You can also purchase their mustard, sambal or salt rub (a GREAT Christmas gift!) Too top it all off... they have a Maple Bacon ice cream sandwich. I so wanted to order it up, but I was full from my chickpea salad and mouthwatering porchetta sandwich. I will definitely make a trip back the ice cream sandwich - yummers! And if you are not in it for the sandwich, the soup/salad or the maple bacon ice cream sandwich, well then go for the scenery. Ladies, I am talking to you. There were at least 4 very good looking men standing behind the counter to escort you through the process. Each bring an enchanting smile, a love for good food and service and each proud to be in this new space. The only critical things I can say is that is definitely hipster friendly. As a not so stylish and on the plump side of life, I found the attention was given more to those who reflected the hipster look and vibe of the men behind the counter. (This could very well have been the case because it was opening day and all their friends were coming in to say hi, so they were just greeting their friends.) Also, the price tag was a bit steep for a sandwich and salad with tax was $13 and some change. That is what we are coming to expect in Gastown, but just means this will be a special treat once a month kind of a place (wish there was a sandwich and soup/salad special or something for $10 or so - that would take it to the next level.) I came here for lunch and the sandwiches are amazing, the people, the service and the whole layout of the place is amazing as well. The salads for acompaning the sandwich are small, good and delicious. Just right for having with your sandwich. For desert I tried the ice cream sandwiches and the ice cream has bacon bits in it!!! Meat and Bread is not just a new lunch time eatery in Gastown, it's THE hottest lunch spot in Vancouver. You won't find a shred of lettuce in this joint, it lives up to its name. The menu is simple: you get your pick of veal, meatball, lamb or pork - all slow roasted to perfection. The smell when you come in is heavenly. My guide thru this culinary experience was Cord - a charming lad from Dublin. He told me that he and his friend Frankie opened their restaurant just five weeks ago. All around I can see that people were really enjoying their food. It was pretty busy for late afternoon. I had the grilled cheese sandwich, aged white cheddar and onion. It came paired with their two homemade sauces - a spicy red sauce and a mustard. Both delicious. They also have them for sale, and I do recommend them. The grilled cheese? Awesome! I had to try the desert - a maple-vanilla and bacon (yes, bacon) ice cream sandwich. The sweet and the salty was an interesting combination. I'm not sure about the tiny bits of bacon in the ice cream. Somehow I couldn't wrap my head around it. Was it good? I can honestly say yes, and you should definitely try it. By the time I got around to ordering their famous Porchetta sandwich it was too late, they were closing down for the evening. But I will definitely come back for it, really soon. I went to Meat & Bread for the first time today, on a Saturday afternoon. I am a total sandwich person, so a gourmet sandwich made to order is right up my alley. I've heard great things about their signature porchetta sandwich, but I decided to go with one of their specials that sounded really good: shredded beef in a hoisin sauce with coleslaw. It was very, very good and a nice size. I liked that it came with a dollop of mustard for dipping. I sat at the communal table and enjoyed the people watching. Will definitely be back! read more

It was an interesting concept for a little restaurant, but I do not feel that it was pulled off well. The place is really cramped, and the staff eye you a little when you have stayed there for a few moments longer than eating your last bite. The sandwiches though are pretty good, even though they are a touch pricey. They have very little in the ways of drinks, and the ones they do have are very pricey. For two people we spent something like $35 plus dollars for a non "sit down and enjoy yourself" restaurant. The decor is nice, but it is a dash to find seating as there is so little of it. The staff does work fast, I do have to give them that. It is a nice place to try once, twice even, but there are more enjoyable places if you want to have a few moments to chat with a friend. read more

I happened to stumble on this shop and decided to pop in for a sandwich. Ordered the classic favourite Porcetta sandwich made with roast pork loin and deep fried crackling. Who doesn't love fried fat? Ciabatta was a bit on the tough side but it was necessary to hold the butter, fat, pork and pesto in place. I devoured every piece, even the ones that got away and fell on the cutting board plate. Well done! And the heavy blues filling the room helped liven up the place. I'll be back for more! read more

When the line snakes out the door and down the street, you know you're probably in for something good. I'm not sure how much of this is attributable to fame from DDD, but does that really matter? The porchetta is one damn fine sandwich. You watch them slice through the meat as you wait inside, and you already know you're in for a treat. You hear a delectable crunch as knife meets crunchy skin, and the blade continues to glide through the soft, tender meat. The meat then comes sandwiched between two slices of homemade ciabatta--served nice and warm, mind you--with a bit of mustard on a wooden board. Simple yet stylish presentation. At this point, there's nothing left to do but dig in. Really, waiting to do so is a crime. There's ample seating at a communal table to further abet you in this mission. At under $10, this sandwich is absolutely worth every penny. It may not look like too hearty a portion, but trust me--it'll leave you pretty full. read more

I saw this place on DD&D and wanted to check it out when we arrived in Vancouver. It was lucky that we did that as it is not open on the weekends. It is in the ground floor of a large building downtown (not a standalone building of its own). Having seen the porkchetta sandwich on TV (and having read all the reviews here on Yelp) there was only one thing I was going to order. They have a special of the day and when we were there it was something with chicken and a third sandwich which was corned beef I believe. There wasn't much of a line - but we were there at about 2pm, we placed our order (2 x porkchetta's, 2 x bottled waters and 1 x soup - that day they had tomato). The total I think was about $27 with tip, not outrageous, but I guess a little more than I am used to back in NM. The bread was a ciabatta roll, the pork loin is roughly chopped and there is a pesto kind of oil spread put on the bread. The sandwich had good flavor, the pork was a little bit colder than I would have liked - the highlight of the sandwich were the small bits of crunchy skin (crackling as we call it in England) I wish there were more of these. I was really hungry by the time we got to eat and so I pretty much inhaled my food. Trying to remember how I felt at the time I did enjoy the roast flavor of the pork, the crunch of the skin, but the bread wasn't as fresh as I would have liked. I am glad we stopped by as it was a pretty unique sando - I am just not sure if the price I paid, the amount of pork and the freshness of the bread was as good as I would have expected. read more

The sandwiches were a bit messy and difficult to eat, especially the meatball one, and I was disappointed that there was no beer on draft. And the chicken was a little dry. When my brother found out that our cruise ended in Vancouver, he said that we had to eat at Meat and Bread since he saw it on Diners, Drivers, and Dive. Funny thing was that on our ship, there was one guy (haha!) that looked like Guy Fieri, but 30 years older and 30 pounds heavier. We got there right when it opened, and they were very nice in explaining the different sandwiches and the ordering process. Of course, we got the Porchetta, and I loved the fresh bread and the crispy pork skin on top. The "kicker" was the mustard that came with the sauce. The pesto and the mustard combined well with the pork in a weird, yet pleasant way. We smuggled a Porchetta sandwich home to LA in our bag. It scanned through the X-ray machine ok even though the TSA took away my little jar of Canadian honey. read more
