My boyfriend has been going to this butcher since they were known at Bernie and Boys in Tukwila. Our go to spot when we want good, quality meat. They dry age their steaks in house, great quality. They will cut the meats how you would like. Their customer service is fantastic and it's great supporting a small, family owned business. Would highly recommend them! read more

I saw a Delmonico steak in the counter that was gorgeous; I lusted to have that steak although I asked for a pot roast. Behind the counter I could see steak cuts aging that made my mouth water. Although I've heard of the Live Butcher for a few years; I've never come here before. It's my loss as I believe this is the best butcher in King County. I'm definitely going to be coming here more often and taking advantage. read more

This place is really good as a small, local butcher that has a wide variety of interesting products. I can't rate them a full five stars though, because of two things that unfortunately butted up against neurological issues of mine: first off, the hand sanitizer they provided at the door was incredibly fragrant with a lingering scent that triggers one of my sensitivities (and gave me a migraine shortly after I left), and secondly I found only after I got home that one of their sausage products has MSG (monosodium glutamate) in it. While MSG is indeed safe in general, it can cause problems for certain rare neurological conditions (including mine). Usually when I'm buying food in the grocery store I'm able to watch out for it and check the food label, but it never occurred to me that I should ask to see the ingredient listing for fresh sausage at a small butcher shop! Anyway. Neither of these things is a huge mark against the business itself, but it's something that folks should watch out for if they have similar sensitivities as me. For the vast majority of the population it's fine. read more

Love this butcher. I have tried others throughout the area, but keep coming back here! Freshest meat available and very comparable prices to grocery store. Clean shop a and great people to chat with. I can get meat cut to my specifications and can special order anything I need. Ask for Brittany! She will take awesome care if you! If you like wings, try their pre-seasoned Malibu wings! Its St. Patricks day during Coronageddon and I realize I dont have any ground lamb. QFC - out. Safeway - out. I go home, sad panda and all, and remember; Holy crap! MEAT THE LIVE BUTCHER! For the past 4 years I've gotten my beef brisket about 2 weeks prior to St Patricks from here to do a proper brine (14 days) - with all the recent hysteria not only did I completely forget about St Patricks Day, but I forgot about my beloved butcher shop! I called and the sweetest woman answered the phone. In my best panicky voice "hey um (dont cough Grace dont cough) do you happen to have any ground lamb?!" YES! YES THEY DO! Hooray they've saved the St Patricks day! Drove as quick as possible to the location, picked up my precious lamb (I has the wares) and pranced home. I ordered a pork loin roast for a dinner party that I held this last Saturday. It was truly magnificent! Nicely marbled, flavorful and juicy. Everyone raved. The butcher boned it for me, split the bones so I could use them in stock and would have tied it for me, but I wanted to use a spice rub so I asked him not to. The service was great and the roast made the party! It was so good that I broke with my usual practice of sending my guests home with doggie bags. I'm greedy. I want all the leftovers read more

What a great butcher! I dont make it to West Seattle very often, but from now on any time I am in the area I will be stopping by here. Not as big of a selection as places like Double D, but the quality of the meat was fantastic and they have some specialty stuff you'll have a hard time finding elsewhere. Had one of the best bone in ribeyes I've ever eaten and really amazing sweet warm italian pork sausage . read more

Love this place! They carry fresh and delicious products. The service is friendly, and the butcher is knowledgeable and helpful. We always go here for the North Dakota ground sausage - it's fantastic and I believe there is no other ground sausage in town that can rival it. Other highlights: New York steaks are the best we've ever had, the seasoned prime rib roast is superb, and the bacon wrapped prawns are something beautiful (true prawns wrapped with high quality bacon). If you haven't been here yet, you're in for a treat. read more

Some day soon this location will have lines and a following. The quality of meats they have is great and the options the offer is also great. My favorite though are the spicy land jaegers. Premium local butcher shop with neighborhood prices. They have some great stuff available like Painted Hills Beef, house made pork sausage, and dry aged steaks. They even have thoughtful items like seasonings and small crates of potatoes, onions, and garlic. Their seafood selection is small but excellent. I've gotten the best shrimp and salmon here. The shop also has house made marinated meats and skewers which makes it great for last minute dinners. This little shop has so many great and delicious things to offer. I mean, I even get my eggs from here now. Prices are right, service is always friendly, and the owner is a great guy to talk to about cooking tips. read more

This place is cool. I ended up going here because Bobs was closed. Glad I did. Good cuts of meats. I like how they have lots of options besides just steak. Lots of skewered meats Italian chicken, Hawaiian pork, I bought some skewered marinated prawns to try tonight and a wrapped flank steak with cheese and what looked like basil. Will update after I eat them. Had the prawns and they were amazing. Each prawns is wrapped in bacon, then the whole thing has chopped garlic and peppers. They are gone now. This is hands down the best butcher shop I know in the greater Seattle are. One of the few remaining craft butcher shops where they will cut you things to order or accept orders ahead of time if you call ahead and where quality matters over quantity. The staff is always very helpful here and very knowledgeable. The quality of the meat is unsurpassed. They only source from Painted Hills Beef and Snake Rivers Farms apparently and both those suppliers only sell beef that has been never treated with hormones or antibiotics! This shop is one of the few shops I have come across where they still dry age beef in house and I even bought some 125 dry aged Wagyu here! Always something interesting in their dry ager. Considering the sources of the meat the prices also are competitive here given the quality. I can recommend any of their home made sausages as well. I'm a big fan of the Cheddar Brats and their beef sticks which they sell in various flavors. If you are a true carnivore this is the place for you! read more

I live in West Seattle and we have no great butcher here so I looked at reviews and found this one. I am so glad I did. He carries organic meats, including organ meats, and grass fed and finished meats. His prices are very reasonable for the quality of the meat. The service is personal and even though I don't eat meat, but my Fiancé does, but I do eat seafood which he also carries, no judgement. Well, outside of the sign. Highly recommend them if you want great quality meat, service a d reasonable prices. Worth the drive. read more

First timer here this past Saturday. I was in search of a center cut Filet loin. I was making a Beef Wellington for the first time and called around to see who could have something for me that day. I spoke to two of the ladies there. She showed me the whole loin and cut it right there in front of me. Well it was amazing and my Beef Wellie turned out amazing. No need to waste anyone's time with a blowhard review. This is the best butcher in the city. Prime cuts at Choice prices. $40,000 dry aged Italian aging case. Steaks are beyond great. Custom cutting for anything you need. Do yourself a favor and head down to this little shop of greatness. read more

Tom Salle and his family have been grocers and butchers in our community for over 100 years. His dad was the original Live Butcher, when I was a kid we used to shop at his grocery store on 1st Ave S. It's long gone but luckily for us Tom opened up this shop in White Center where he can show his skills as a butcher and sausage maker. Tom and his assistants do all the work themselves so you get great cuts of steak you can't find at a grocery store. The best Spencer steak I've had, it seems to be a giant de-boned rib steak. He rolls it into a round steak and ties it with string so that's almost a roast hybrid. At least I cook it like one, searing the sides and then roasting it in the oven. The compact shape makes it easier to cook to the perfect temperature, keeping it pink in the middle but not underdone. He has marinaded meats that are quite tasty, great to toss on the grill or roast in the oven. His sausage is great, spicy Italian sausage, bratwurst, a North Dakota sausage that makes a great breakfast sausage or part of a nice pasta sauce. He basically has everything you need if you're in a carnivorous frame of mind. For the high quality of meat the prices are great, you get what you pay for here. I know he's had a hard time with the price of meat constantly rising, trying to stay competitive and stay in business. He doesn't always have them but if you see his stuffed pork chops, and you like old-fashioned stuffing, grab them. You won't regret it! read more

Being used to getting my meat from grocery stores, I wasn't sure what to expect from a butcher. Personalized service, sure, but after experiencing The Swinery, I didn't expect to be able to afford any butcher meat at all, ever. How happy I am to be wrong! Meat the Live Butcher is a hole-in-the-wall butcher shop in Highland Park, near White Center. The butcher and his associate could not have been friendlier or more helpful, and the selection was impressive (everything from land jaeger to rocky mountain oysters to flank steak to ground sausage, plus deli cheeses and more). I was surprised to see that the more garden-variety meat options were the same price as I was paying for them at Trader Joe's, QFC, and Safeway! Except, in this case, they're from local farms, some of them are organic and/or grass-fed options, and of course Meat is a local business (so the money I spend there tends to stay within my community). Yay! We have now made the switch to getting all of our meat (bacon, steak, chicken, stock bones, etc) from Meat the Live Butcher. Their rabbit is half what I paid for it at The Swinery, which puts it back into my price range, and I can't wait to try their more exotic offerings. I definitely recommend checking this business out....I think you'll be pleasantly surprised, too! read more

Don't be shy about asking for advice, they are experts that help you decide what cut you need and how to best prepare it. Conveniently, they also carry eggs, onions, garlic, potatoes. I really enjoy this place. I don't come here often, but when I do it's awesome and then I am reminded how often I should actually visit this place. I usually get marrow bones here to roast in the oven and they always make sure the cuts are even so that the bones stand on their own while roasting. The other day I went to get some steaks (boneless ribeye) and the thing I love about this place is that they get the cut you ask for, and they show it to you to make sure that it is the cut you want. She asked me if the two cuts of boneless ribeye was good and I looked at it and I was just in aw. They looked so beautiful and big and had a nice color. Best place to buy steaks, ground beef, sausage or any meat! I am a licensed butcher in Seattle and I discovered this shop two weeks ago. I came upon this White Center Gem while picking up my son at school. I figured I would pick up a couple New York's; I was not disappointed. When my wife took her first bite I saw her eyes light up; until now we had been only eating beef from my work; these steaks melted in our mouths! Absolutely perfect! We didn't realize how good steak could taste. And I would say after buying my weeks supply of steaks and sausage at this shop, from a very passionate butcher (The only kind I trust) I will ONLY buy my steaks here. I was looking for a place to get meat to make gravy (sauce) for pasta. This place had it all. Not only did I get all the meat I wanted, I learned that I was using the wrong cut of meat to make my own Braciole. I learned that if you use flank steak and cut against the grain it all falls apart! I always wondered why that happened! The butcher was so nice and spent time explaining to me some tips on how to prepare things and even took the time to flatten some of the meat for the Braciole. My gravy came out great and the Italian sausages were tasty. He even gave me string to tie the bracioles with and a free sample of jerky. I'm definitely going back! read more

I used to work as a checker for Bernie and Boys during hs & college so I paid myself a visit to Toms shop. My bf and I enjoy our monthly indulgence of gourmet steak so I bought a rib eye for my bf, and t-bone for myself. We absolutely loved the quality of the cuts! We definitely know where we'll be purchasing our future steak eats. As for the pepperoni sticks, they too were delish. My bf said they were the best beef sticks he's ever had. Haha. First guy I talked to either came from Dallas or knows Dallas inside and out. He has family there, has lived in Seattle a long time, and told me his grandfather used to bring him here as a kid. He's been eating here basically his whole life. Second guy had lived here for 40 years and said this was somehow his first time ever trying it, even though he'd walked past it forever and always meant to stop in. We stood there talking for a while. Really good guy. The woman behind the counter did not speak English, so I got to tell her in my very limited Spanish, "Thank you very much for your work. It looks beautiful. I really appreciate it." She answered me in Spanish, and then I had to admit, also in Spanish, that I was very sorry but I did not understand Spanish, I only barely know how to speak it. She laughed. I laughed. It was great. Then I got back home, opened the box they split for me and my mom, and this was half of it: best Reuben I have ever had in my life. Just one of those unexpectedly great little trip moments. Good food, good people, good conversation, and one of those places that feels like it's been holding onto a piece of the city for a long time.

His brother got off the case right away, but the owner continued to mutter "fucking rude". He stared us down and started shooing us away with his hands, literally saying "Get." like we were animals. We stepped aside, but he kept staring us down. I asked him, "What are you looking at? What do you want us to do?" He escalated things further and said: "Do you want me to come find your house?" Absolutely inexcusable to say to anyone, let alone a young woman. When my boyfriend said, "You could have been nice about it." He said, "I don't have to." This wasn't just a reminder about his equipment, it was the tone, the hostility, and the lack of basic respect. No one came into the building after us, so we were not obstructing anyone from going to his business. We were simply waiting for our food and were met with aggression from this man. He does not deserve any business after such a lack of basic decency.

As I was setting up drinks, I was the last one at the table. The steaks were sitting there and everyone had stopped eating. When I asked how it was, I was told "Try it, tell us what you think". I sliced into the steak. It looked amazing. I bit in. BUT afte a chew, I stopped eating it. The beef was definitely 'off' andd spoiled - which explained why no one was eating it. Fortunately, it was surf & turf night so we still had enough to eat. But after paying wagyu prices and lovingly cooking the steak, the disappointment was beyond words. Obviously I will call the store as I want to make sure they pull the remaining inventory from theirr display. At this point, my husband is worried as he had three bites as he presumed the aftertaste was from the truffle sauce I had drizzled. Now, he's worried that he will get sick. I guess time will tell. So FYI --- make sure you check the original dates of the meat before they cut/vaccum seal. Long story short - I hope they read this and review their QA processs to ensure all meats are dated/rotated/stored.

This place doesn't screw around. If you want a great, hearty, flavor-packed sandwich, this is one of the best places to throw your money. But, as others have pointed out, it's no cheap date: expect to pay over $20 for one of those mighty pastrami sandwiches. This isn't Subway so you're not saving money by eating here, but after one bite of their pastrami you'll understand why you're paying so much. Quality isn't cheap. I'd say this place is tied with Tat's Deli for the best sandwiches in Seattle.
