I was pleasantly surprised by Mecates. We were traveling from Ft. Wayne to Indianapolis, and stopped in. Food: The quality, portion size and price of their menu items were all very good. There are a ton of Mexican restaurants in the market these days, and finding differences between them is getting harder to do, but I thought Mecates did a very nice job of overall meal presentation. Their chips & salsa were decent - not spectacular, but satisfying. The carne asada for my fajitas was a tad overcooked, but still tender. Service: Our server was very prompt and attentive. As I'm mentioned frequently on Yelp, my pet peeve with restaurants is when they force you to beg for drink refills (which is usually a sign of understaffing), but at Mecates, this wasn't a problem. I come Here every time I come to Indiana. When you walk In someone always greets you with friendly service and a smile. They're very Attentive to their customers and they make you a priority as soon as you walk through the door. I ordered my Taco Salad, and of course they listened to every request I had. They were very generous with the sour cream. (8 months pregnant and I asked specifically for that.) They Listen very well and ALWAYS make my order DIRECTLY TO MY LIKING. When placing my order, the people have always asked me questions, Where I'm From? How the drive was. What New York is Like. Etc. The Social Skills these people have are always so refreshing and Thoughtful. Great Conversations!! They DON'T OVERCHARGE either!! I paid $10 for a Taco Salad... PHENOMENAL! I tipped them $7.00. I have had nothing but good experiences the couple of times that I HAVE been... This time, I Went to Kroger to Pick up A Few Smoothies and Some dessert for the Hotel room. (Literally RIGHT behind Mecates Restaurant.) I spent MAYBE 10 minutes in the store. I came out, drover around back to The Restaurant. It honestly Takes forever to make order in New York. I walked in and it was beautifully Packaged sitting there all ready for me and yet again, someone greeted me at the door with a smile across their face to hand me my Order. Decided to grab lunch here while in town for high school basketball. Local reviews were good and we love a good Mexican restaurant! Not very busy for a Saturday afternoon, and we were seated right away. Our server let us know that the house margaritas are $1.99 on Saturdays, and who am I to turn down a $2 margarita?! It was actually a decent one and we each ended up with a second one, because why not? Lol. We started with guacamole, glad that they make their fresh and you can tell. I added a little salt but it was otherwise really good. The salsa was pretty good, I normally like it a little spicier, but it was mild enough to be crowd pleasing and still had good flavor. He enjoyed his taco salad, and I had steak tacos with cilantro and onion. Overall a good choice for Mexican and I'd go again if I were ever in this area! read more

Between management, our waitress, the expo, and the new open environment, it felt like a genuine restaurant. Would not go again! I swear we saw bugs crawling along the wall dying, my wife said it was cockroach, it might have been cricket... but still. The food was NOTHING special. The staff are nice and friendly and doing a good job, but there was just nothing I liked about the experience. I'll go to TacoBell. read more

Best place ever! My boyfriend and I recently discovered this amazing restaurant. Now we go once a week! The prices are amazing for the amount of food they give you! It's only $4 for a large bowl of queso rather than the restaurant in Anderson is $11 for a large bowl of queso. The salsa has some spice to it which is great! And the waiters are always very fast and friendly! We've never had to wait longer than 5-10 minutes for our food! And the food is delicious! read more

What a gem in Huntington IN. Stopped By for lunch on the way home from a road trip and WOW we're we impressed. Came at lunch and found plenty of parking. Greeted by friendly staff and sat right away. Large menu but the buffet caught our eye and it was very inexpensive. Two buffet style tables adorned with steaming hot dishes from make your own tacos to French fries. There was even a third table with condiments of salsas sour cream and cheeses. The food was fresh and hot. They staff filled it often and there were new items added at times too. It wasn't spicy food either but seasoned perfectly for young and old pallets. Drinks were sold separately and filled regularly by our friendly waitress. She was seen often taking plates away and making sure we were happy. Clean environment in the dinning room but the bathroom for the ladies was less to be desired. Dark black rim of funk around the bottom of the toilet and floors that were waxy and slippery feeling when you walked in. Paper towels were missing from the sink and water was all over the counter left by previous women who didn't care to clean up patter themselves. Plenty of room for seating in the large dinning area. Lots of Booths with a few tables. The Sears were comfy and the tables were spacious with enough room for all the plates and drinks without feeling cramped. I wish we had one in my home town because I'd frequent often. A definite must go when you're in the area or live here. It would be my favorite place to it. Yum. read more

AWFUL, me and my girlfriend stopped to eat and it was not busy at all. The best part about the place was that it was clean and looked nice. To start they serve you "spicy" ranch with your chips and salsa which is not spicy at all, it was more sweet than anything and was digusting. We ordered our food, I got the Scallops and chicken and she got the chicken and mushroom quesadilla. It took forever for us to get our food, a group of 6 and 4 sat down after us and got their food before us, ate and left before we got our food. We ran out of chips and salsa and we asked for more, and the waitress got us chips but never got us salsa for the rest of the time we was there. Our food eventually comes to the table about an hour later and both of our sides of rice were room temp to cold, and I'm not a fan of guacamole so I asked for no guacamole and still was served guacamole. The scallops of my meal were still frozen on the plate. INEDIBLE. The waitress comes back and takes my plate and I had removed the scallops so that I could show her but she didn't take them at first. She comes back saying that she wants the scallops so the kitchen could see if what I was saying was true. They didn't make me any more food, didn't offer to make more food and brought me a bowl of queso to try and make it better. I have been spoiled with Amazon authentic Mexican food my entire life being that I grew up in Southern California. There was a taco shop on every corner and also more elegant Mexican restaurants everywhere. Moving to the Midwest I held onto hope that I would be able to find great Mexican food here as well. I will say that Mecates is not bad food. But it isn't as authentic as I would hope. The meats are a bit bland to me and white cheese sauce seems to be served with everything. Something I have never seen before. We have eaten here a few times and have tried many things from the menu including the buffet. I know that different parts of Mexico have different types of Mexican food and I know they will cater to what the locals prefer which is smart. Again, to me, the food wasn't absolutely amazing but also isn't terrible. read more

Service was a little off but we didn't mind too much. We ordered drinks and waited for about 10 minutes and there were 2 servers in the section we were seated in. Wasn't too busy when we went, it was around 3:45. Food was okay, I liked the rice the most. My mom got a beef enchilada and a chicken taco and my grandma got a burrito and enchilada combo that came with rice and beans. At the end of the meal we were waiting for a while to get the bill. This place was absolutely horrible. The worst service that has ever been given. They acted like we weren't even there, and took forever to get the ordering process started. It took even longer to get our chips (which isn't that big of a deal). I ordered 3 virgin pina coladas, inky brought out two. Then I ordered myself a sangria, it came out warm and watery, with no ice or fruit, and just overall tasted horrible. Later on we asked for two waters, and one in a to go cup for my son. They just brought out my water, and took more than five minutes to get the water. Such a bad place to go, as people passing through town. Don't recommend to anyone. read more

The food was ok...I had the buffet and so did my little cousins who are 5 and 7. The food was ok but not as good as when they first opened up in Huntington. The buffet didn't have a lot to pick from today and everything was cold I thought. And the taco shells are very stale and old. If we ever come back we will definitely not be getting the buffet. We will order from the menu so we can have fresh hot food. Also the table was sticky and looks like they just take a rag and wipe away crumbs. Also the staff is not very talkative so it made me feel weird to ask for extra napkins. The inside could be a little more bright also. read more

Can't really tell you what the entrees are like here, however, can tell you that you will be lucky to ever see them. Went in and ordered some soft-drinks and got chips and salsa. The salsa tasted like tomato puree out of a can and was asked waiter for some spicy salsa or something to liven up what they had. He muttered as he walked off, never to be seen again. After 30-45 minutes of looking for the waiter, my party decided that the menu offerings didn't appear to be anything really special, so I went to the front, found the cashier, paid for the drinks and we left to try out Los Amigos. Based on my experience here, you can expect to be ignored, get pretty tasteless salsa, cold chips and not much else. There are better choices available in any direction from here, take them. read more
