Service was upbeat and patient even though the line kept moving. The staff did a nice job guiding first-timers through the menu and explaining the bakery items and drinks. I ordered: - Iced chai latte: honestly disappointing, it was not very rich or spiced and tasted a bit watered down - Empanada de carne (beef): hot, savory, and well-seasoned with a satisfying flaky crust - Hawaiian croissant (ham, white cheese, fresh pineapple): surprisingly good sweet and savory combo that worked better than expected I love how addicting and well the salsa de ajo pairs with the hot bites! The food overall was fresh and comforting, especially the baked items and savory bites. The chai just did not match the level of everything else. The vibe works for both grab-and-go and sitting down to linger. You can easily pop in for a quick bite or settle into a table and take your time with coffee and pastries. Prices are very reasonable for the portion sizes and variety. Parking was easy in the small lot when I went, though it could get tight during peak hours. Mecatos is a chain Colombian Cafe. I've been to quite a few of them but this particular location is my favorite. It's busy but they have many tables inside and outside to enjoy your meal. I typically order the beef empanadas and quesito with the green sauce to go but this time I decided to order something different. On this Sunday morning I wanted to sit down, enjoy some coffee and have a sandwich. Actually I got the chorizo arepa with loads of cheese and a sausage croissant. Both were huge, greasy and just the way I like it. I mentioned earlier that this location is busy, but the line went super fast. GREAT PLACE!!!!!! I've gone inside & done the drive-thru several times at this location. Each time has been great. My bestie took me here & we just sat forever & talked & ate the DELICIOUS pastries. We had a couple of bags to go as we were taking pastries to our families at home. One of the lovely, kind young ladies who works there said she would refill our cups with regular coffee if wanted while there !!! I'm wondering why my part of the country doesn't have a similar Colombian bakery & cafe chain like Mecatos because San Diego certainly has a significant Latin American population that would support a business like this. Not only was this location in Hoffner the closest to where I was staying, but it seemed to be the newest branch. The standalone structure on a corner lot resembled a Panera but with a drive-thru and an outdoor patio behind the building. I arrived during lunch hour and while the parking lot was not full, the inside seating was almost completely occupied. On the wall behind the front of the line, there were ten different combo meals posted that featured an item plus a drink. I nearly chose the Colombian Hot Dog which was a beef frank dressed with cheese, pineapple sauce, garlic sauce, potato chips, mayonnaise, onion sauce, and ketchup. After scanning all of the lovely pastries and desserts that were on display, I reverted to my original mission which was to purchase several baked goods to go. My picks were the following... * Pan Rollo Jamon y Queso * Hawaiian Empanada * Guava Pastry * Sweet Croissant The first item was a bread roll stuffed with ham and cheese then oven baked. It would make a great handheld snack every morning on the way to the office. The deep-fried empanada contained ham, white cheese, and fresh pineapple. The puff pastry was filled with guava jam and topped with powdered sugar. The croissant was like a sticky bun with an emphasis on 'sticky' as the item did not want to slide out of the paper bag in which it was placed. Mecatos has operating hours that span across breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I would return for the pan de queso, empanadas, arepas, and pastels. These were just some of the savory offerings. If I had a regular sweet tooth, then this place would be trouble with its array of sugary calorie busters. I gave a 4.5 star rating for my visit to Mecatos Bakery & Cafe. read more

This is a great place. Forget Starbucks - Mecatos has coffee machines and they have real food. I was visiting from Las Vegas and I have to say the Arepas is a good snack / meal and the variety of their pastries are also great. What I also love is being able to sit and work a little before heading into the rest of my day. Carne Asada Arepa- definitely add the avocado and the hot sauce. It needs more picante! Always a little disappointed with this place. The venue is always a bit sloppy, with the dining room tables messy and not whipped down. The food is expensive for what they offer. I ordered the avocado toast coming with an ice coffee. They said it was a dollar up charge. I thought that was strange. My dad ordered the breakfast croissant with a matcha coffee. They also added a dollar charge to the coffee. We asked why and they said the combo only included plain black coffee. The menu says brewed coffee. When the food arrived the avocado toast wasn't toasted, it was avocado on bread. The 12oz coffee came in a 12oz cup filled with ice so was closer to 6oz of coffee which felt like a rip off after I paid the extra dollar for it. read more

Once their biggest asset is consistency, the food is always good, the selection is amazing and the service so far has been on point. We have been here a handful of times and it has been a good experience so far. Mecatos is one of my go to breakfast spots! We love going for the breakfast croissant sandwich. The croissant is so soft and flaky and the cheese makes it even better. It's about $9 but big enough for two people to share (what I always do). There's so many pastries I want to come back to try too! Mecatos is a chain of Hispanic bakeries. This one on Hansel/Orange Ave and Hoffner. It's a beautiful little building that used to be a bank. They did a masterful job in renovating it. Nice little courtyard, smart parking and entrance and exits. The food is incredible, such a variety. If you don't speak Spanish, don't let that bother you. Everything is printed in English as well. The staff all seem to be bi-lingual as well. I work with people from many different S. American countries. I bring food from Mecatos from time to time. No matter which country they are from that all agree the food is incredibly authentic and delicious.then why only 4 stars you ask. There is systematic problem with the coffee portion of the operation. I ordered a ham and cheese bread which I thoroughly enjoyed. Croissant Dulce, carrot cake and 2 coffees. We sat down and were told coffee was coming. So we waited, waited, ate a little, waited, finished eating, waited....you get the point. I finally went up and asked if I could get the 2 coffees to go....then guess what...I waited. When I finally got my coffee it was delicious.....moral of the story is.....coffee first, always coffee first. read more

What a great addition to the Edgewood neighborhood!! I've been looking forward to their opening here for a few months now and this location does not disappoint! The staff is extremely helpful and friendly. The building itself is comfortable and relaxing. There are several seating sections both inside and out, from tables and chairs to cozy places with pillows and a couch and relaxing chairs. The landscaping adds to our neighborhood and I'm so happy to see this business expand to our area. There is plenty of outside parking and a drive-up window. (The drive-up window was not set up yet as today was the first day of business. It is expected to open within a month.) The food items are assembled in glass cases and you walk up and order what you want and pay at the end of the line. Very fast and very efficient and the selection was quite nice for the first day. I ordered the beef and the cheese empanadas and they were delicious! I ordered the Merengue for dessert as it looked amazing. (It is made of egg whites and sugar and it was complete heaven. Though next time, I'll probably share one; it was a lot of sugar for me.) The owner/manager/all-around worker (as he explained to me) is named Nelson. He said this location was 3 years in the making. I told him I was impressed with EVERYTHING and thanked him for bringing this great Columbian bakery and cafe to our lucky neighborhood. Theo Boñukeos and Pan de Bono were our favorites. I wish the eggs had came out a bit sooner but over all we liked it and will be returning. Ok, sooo, I love this place! Let's start with the location! They took the old bank and transformed it into this fabulous coffee oasis with seating outside, too. The decor is great and both the food and atmosphere are on point. Next, the coffee! Soooo good and the prices are totally reasonable. I was pleasantly surprised. Now, the food! Oh, so tasty, delicious, and fresh! Salad was fresh and full of flavor, the empanada was flavorful and NOT greasy, so thank you for that! And, last, but not least, the pastries...so many pastries! Went pick up the order an check if everything was ok well no two items were missing,went inside explained what happened the employed looked at us and said I understand but I don't know what you want me to do? Maybe refund me the money for the items that were charged but you don't have? He has to call the manager to approved the refund!!! Now I'm double checking the order they didn't provided a third item but this one was replaced for something I don't care! We've always loved this bakery chain and have eagerly awaited the opening of this location near our home. Totally worth the wait!!! Baked goods range from rustic Colombian fare to desserts worthy of capping off a fancy dinner. Entrées are fantastic, if a little expensive, and we will be stocking their braided cheese bread in our VRBO/AirBnB from now on. The interior space is the kind of place in which you'd like to linger, the exterior space already has kids playing with the giant Connect 4 game, and the staff could not be friendlier. It would be nice if their staff spoke a little more English to answer questions about their food; I suspect they would sell quite a bit more if they were better able to educate visitors new to their cuisine. read more
