I've been with MedFirst Schertz for my entire adult life, from the time I turned 20 till now, 23 years later ( I'm 43). I've been through 6 or 7 switches of doctors and PAs or NPs, (starting with Ms. Fikes, and including Blaine Carmichael who I don't care for because he cuts you off and belittles you and makes you feel stupid but he's retired now), their clinic move from a tiny little office space near 3009 to where they are now off Schertz Pkwy, and finally joining up with the best PA ever, James Bell, being devastated by his retirement, the clinic dropping my insurance, having to find another clinic, MedFirst taking my insurance again after a few years (it's ACA) and finally, the golden ticket: Mr. Bell coming out of retirement because he hated it. During the dark ages that I had to see another provider, I went to Kellum, and they are an absolute nightmare all around to deal with. I went through almost all the same issues as above, but I've always been treated as a pill junkie, my pain has never been taken seriously even though it's debilitating, they miss very obvious causes of issues that took me about 5 minutes to find, they misdiagnose and mistreat, and I seriously consider filing a lawsuit every time I have to go in for anything. The only good thing is that their front office staff is really friendly during check in. And their bathrooms are mostly pretty clean. You don't want to be assigned to Dr. Kellum, who didn't diagnose my dad's very obvious ALS, and he suffered tremendously for it and died early needlessly. A serious and egregious mishandling of his health, because he allowed my dad to keep talking him out of that diagnosis, but he had all the symptoms. Kellum is a man tired of his job and doesn't care at all anymore. I went through 3 or 4, maybe 5, PAs and NPs because the turnover there is so high. I have been with this last NP, Brandi Breur for about 3 years and the only reason I'm still seeing her is because she is able to prescribe a medication I need that Mr. Bell cannot, and I am working hard to find another doctor that will prescribe it instead. Now for the good stuff. When you see Mr. Bell and his MA, you don't get any of that. He doesn't dismiss you, he listens, he asks question, he reviews your chart and reason for your appointment and any labs right before coming in, and will go over anything important with you. You'll get a quick mini physical every time and not be charged extra for it. Pretty much every visit I have with him is productive and I love his MAs as well. He only has one MA under him, who is dedicated solely to him and his patients and it makes the care you receive much more efficient and reliable. If you send a message on the portal, you'll usually get a fairly rapid response. Typically same-day if you send it early enough. Now there was one time I was deep into my depression and created a problem that wasn't really there with his MA, who was new to me. We went back and forth and I finally told her I didn't want her to respond to anymore of my messages, that I wanted someone else to handle my situation, essentially firing her from my care, which I have never done. Like I said, I was pretty deep into my depression and feeling some things. That same day I got a call from the clinic from the clinic manager who helped me work things out with her. The next time I saw her in person for an appointment she was so sweet, and held none of it against me. I apologized and we all moved on, and she still handles my care for Mr. Bell and does an excellent job. Refills and referrals are submitted very fast, but sometimes you won't get notified and you have to go view the portal for the information. They have an onsite lab so anything they need done there is done right away after your appointment. They have a radiology clinic across the hall that does X-rays and mris and other imaging and I believe they get you in same day too. They have an extensive network of specialists that they can draw from, and you can specify if you have any preferences. read more

I'd like to start off by saying, I've been a patient for 3 1/2 years. I used to see Blaine Carmichael, his assistant, Susan, was a fantastic. The front desk ladies, have always been fantastic as well. Dr. Carmichael retired. I had to go in as a "new patient" to see the new physician, James Bell, in order to get my prescriptions refilled. From the start of trying to schedule the appointment on the portal, it's was nothing but problems. That's when I noticed the medic assistants name change in our chat, to Crystal H. Someone who has no business working in the medical field or any other field, that requires customer service. She was so rude, unprofessional & disrespectful from the get go. She was short in the chats, didn't explain anything, other than you need to make an appointment. She would just stop responding completely in chat. I'd have to call to get help from the front desk. After she took my weight, she just walked away, down the hallway, didn't tell me to follow. We get into the room, she is so rude, rolls her eyes, huffs and puffs as I attempt to explain why I'm there. Tells me I had never been prescribed sleeping medication- while looking at my information in the computer. That every other staff member looks at & tells me the 3 sleeping medications I had been prescribed over the years. Treated me like absolute crap. Didn't excuse herself, didn't say dr will be right in- she didn't say a word after her rampage of being hateful. Walks out and slammed the door behind her. Stood in the hallway, and loudly named off all the prescriptions I've been on- mocking my situation, that she knows nothing about. Makes the remark- "the icing on the cake, she doesn't even know what she wants to be on" and laughs. Laughs like ptsd is a joke. Depression. Insomnia. Anxiety. Are a joke. Someone that's struggles to make the appointment, to go in & be comfortable with a new provider. To be comfortable talking to someone about their entire life and trauma. By the time Dr Bell got in the room, I was shaking, and almost in tears I was so upset. I didn't even touch base on anything, I was so uncomfortable and ready to run out the door. I've never been treated so poorly, had my privacy violated by someone who's supposed to be there to advise, guide, help you. And a medial assistant. I told the front desk as I was checking out about my experience, and left crying. I called about an hour after leaving that day, to get her name & the office managers name. She's the one who answered, I asked for the office manager. She hung up. I called back again from my husband phone, asked the same thing, she gives his name & hers. I've been in contact with the office manager, and am waiting to hear back from them. But they did tell me, this isn't the first incident, involving Crystal in this exact situation. Hard to believe she's still around after multiple complaints about her behavior, attitude & way ahead communicates & treats people. read more

Never going back to this clinic. I scheduled an appointment for a physical exam and these idiots decide to ignore that and bill my insurance for a regular visit which, if I decide to pay will cost my over $200 instead of being fully cover because of their stupidity. Not only that but now I lost the $450 in HSA funds which the physical was meant to earn me. So over $650 lost over their error. Then when I ask them to fix it they have the audacity to insinuate that my first visit can't be a physical exam...excuse me, there are plenty of people who will only see a doctor when they need to get a physical especially if they don't have an established primary. So try again...this is the very reason why I still see my real primary in Georgia. The doctors and staff here are sorry, manipulative and greedy. read more

Horrible Experience!!! -No primary care doctor here for the last 9 months, I would be surprised if they ever replace the doctor. They keep saying they will but nothing. - Absolutely the worst customer service I've ever had from the front seat. They just don't care. It is clearly an inconvenience if you call. Had them actually tell me, "Well you can call back while you decide I have 2 other calls on hold." This was after no more than a 90 second conversation. WHAT??? read more

I would not recommend this place to anyone who is looking for a Dr. The front office staff is unprofessional and rude. Bianca is the rudest and acts as if she is entitled. The other girl with the glasses is just as bad. Neither one of them answer the phone so it's impossible to get through. Also they still make you wear a mask as if covid is still a thing. Dr Garza is more caught up with making his staff laugh and giggle than he actually is about you the patient. Save your time and find somewhere else. read more

Thisf clinic does not know how to bill and JAMES BELL makes up diagnoses just to get labs covered!!!!! This is fraud by this clinic. I can't help but wonder if the providers come and go constantly because of this. I had blood work done for my annual exam which is covered by my insurance, but since they billed it as a problem visit it went to my deductible. The office manager, JOHN GONZALES, has not idea how to do his job. He does not return calls or correct the billing. So this isn't my first visit but it will be my last. I am here because I went to the ER on Saturday and was told to follow up on Monday with my doctor. Well my doctor is never available. Which I didn't let bother to much. I would just see the Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant. Basically who ever was available. By the way I am in good health so I usually come for a yearly exam or allergies. I have had a bad experience with a PA here in the past and just chose to still come and just avoid him. However my last few visits have been troublesome. Being charged for a co-pay when I should not have been because it was my yearly exam. Today takes the cake. 1st they need to have sick slots available that can not be booked until that day. I called at 830 and of course my Doctor was not available. After waiting about 20 mins I here one of the front desk ladies say we need to inform PA (I won't use his name) patients he is 45 min behind. She then says my Dr. who I have only seen once is done his 3pm didn't show (my apt was 3pm with PA)so maybe we can get him to see someone. So I say I am actually his patient hoping I could see him and get out of here. Well no they called others who came after me one was a new patient. I only came so my vitals and breathing could be checked you think you would want to get me in and out. I will be looking for a new Primary Care clinic. I have not been this sick in 20 years and having to wait an hour for a follow is unacceptable. They won't see you if you are an hour late but they are okay wasting you time. I worked in clinic for years and when a provider us behind you tell the patient when they check in. I did not get informed at check in. She started informing patients after he was 45 min behind. Needless to say it is 3:58 I checked in at 2:50 and I still have one person ahead if me. So I am pissed but pneumonia is not something to play with so I sit my pissed off self in this exam room and wait and simmer. Now it's 4:18 and I am still waiting. So much for 45 minutes behind. So I saw the PA and because of how nice and concerned he was I will come back and see him in 2 weeks. After that I can't say. read more

After a first, unpleasant visit last fall with PA Carmichael, I never wanted to go back. He called me fat to my face. Yes, I've gained weight since my husband died, but I'm doing the best I can. Friday morning I woke up coughing my head off and called MedFirst. The only available appointment was with PA Carmichael. I knew I was in need of medication, so I said I'd be there. I did refuse to weigh in because I didn't want to get berated again. PA Carmichael was quite nice and after a few tests, told me I had bronchitis. Great. I did a breathing treatment in the office and was sent home with a few prescriptions. It's only been one day, but I feel 90% better than I did yesterday and am hardly coughing at all. I even made PA Carmichael laugh. Maybe he's not so bad after all...or maybe it's just because it was Friday afternoon...?! read more

Find another physician, at least I will. Very short staffed office (1) for calls - I was on hold for 7+ minutes, line at check-in and yet THEIR delay canceled my appointment. Food for thought Maybe Friday's get busy, maybe Hire more people. read more

Dr. Carmichael is the worst PA I have ever seen. He really makes you feel like you are nothing. And when it comes to family history... he should be a little more respectful... No bedside manners. Can't believe he has made it this long working with patients. Worst experience ever!!! read more
