I have been coming here since the beginning of the year and must say that the service and care here is extraordinary! I jumped between 2 other hospitals but found this one to be the best. Dr. beichner (bike-ner) has been great so far and I truly feel like I get the answers I need. He is highly educated and explains to me everything I need to know. Compared to my previous vet, I always felt some type of dissatisfaction. I never felt like we were getting any answers and just kept going in circles with testing. When I told the doctor my concerns for my bird, he devised a plan to investigate and figure out what was wrong, and I truly felt like he was trying to help me. I was first greeted by the wonderful people at the front desk. Then as I sat waiting for my turn I was greeted by a sweet bird in the waiting room with quite a few cheerful hellos. It's the first time I've been greeted with something other than a bark from a patient in a veterinary hospital! One of my younger but adult chickens was having some crop issues and a prolapsed vent. I'm not a newbie when it comes to animal care but I've never dealt with anything like this and I was scared it would become necrotic if I didn't seek help. Dr. Beichner was kind and explained to me a couple possible causes and options for treatment. Because she was in good shape otherwise and the prolapse was mild he gave me hope that she could recover. He explained where we could start and where we could go. He prescribed her medication and let me know what steps I could take at home and at what point to return. I drove quite a long way a little sad and worried I might not be able to afford treatment or that it would be worse than I knew. I left happy for the trip home more confident in what to do and filled with hope that my sweet girl could recover. I am thankful for the thoughtful care they provided start to finish! read more

I had to go in for a medical emergency for my hen Checkers who had an oviduct impaction, so sadly we had to put her down. Dr. Schoellmann was wonderful & compassionate, asked if I needed time to process this. She explained the process, even offering a free autopsy for piece of mind. She called the next day w/ confirmation & followed up to see how I was doing. Dr. Schoellmann had a calm & understanding nature which was so reassuring. I've been coming here for years and wanted to update my review because I consistently get amazing care here. The more I visit vets (both avian and regular vets for cats and dogs), the more I realize how special this place is. All of the vets here are very competent and good at what they do. My review is specifically for Dr. Baden, who is by far the most warm, compassionate, and empathetic vet I've ever met. She saw a previous pigeon of mine through an awful tumorous cancer that eventually took her life. At every stage, she explained my options thoroughly and without judgment - I was always informed of the possible risks, outcomes, and costs of each path. My choices felt informed and she was always supportive. I never felt pressured into anything or guilted for declining certain procedures. I recently brought in another pigeon with unidentified tumor and once again, Dr. Baden has been absolutely amazing throughout this difficult time. She showed me the ultrasounds and explained the pros and cons of each potential treatment, while ultimately supporting my decision to enter hospice care instead of more invasive options. I cannot explain in words how much it means to have full confidence in my vet, knowing that they genuinely care about my bird and aren't just trying to make as much money as possible. After visiting several disappointing vet clinics for my other pets, I deeply appreciate the beautiful care we receive at Medical Center for Birds with Dr. Baden. I'm very disappointed in the results of my visit. I still don't know what's wrong with my cockatiel $600+ later. I'm convinced there are no good vets in the Bay Area and especially for birds. Just a quick note of thanks for caring for my Pacific Parrotlet. She came in lethargic and not cheeping. I left with a pain med and antibiotic, with a physical exam that they told me was indeterminate. This is a well-run center that feels like urgent care for humans. They check you in and a tech runs intake. Everything ran very quickly, and I was back out the door in less than 2 hours. The doctor was honestly too polite for my taste, trying very gently to tell me she's overweight and just dancing around the fact that her other symptoms won't tell us anything until a million dollars are spent on blood work and x-rays. The price points are the only reason this place isn't five-star; I don't mind that it's expensive, but no one really wanted to discuss cost on the phone or in person. A sign in front said payment is due when you leave, so there was a very real chance I could have been on the hook for $2,000 I did not have. The visit only cost ~$200 including meds, and I learned there wasn't anything obviously wrong with her limbs, heart or respiration; This was a comfort. My bird is still not fully recovered and I fear may pass away, but she shows steady signs of improvement the past two days; Cheeping more and generally being more active. I felt secure the whole time that these people had experience with Pacific Parrotlets -- which feels rare unless you know about them -- and that their treatment plan was the correct course of action. If my bird pulls through and keeps improving, I may well be back for further tests as both time and money allow. read more

It's been months now, but recently we discovered my Amazon parrot (37!) was a female and and had an egg stuck in her vent for who knows how long and was causing her a lot of health issues. I drove her up (about 4 hours from where we live) and dropped her off. I didn't know what to expect and was so nervous we were going to lose her. The staff tried everything they could to remove the egg without surgery but she ended up requiring a surgical procedure. I am so thankful for the staff and doctors who kept me updated every day on how she was and the procedures they were attempting on her. I could tell they truly care about our feathered family members and will do all they can to help them. beware! the medical center for birds murders birds! dont take your bird to mcfb. they murdered my beloved macaw! don't lose your precious bird like i did! last year (2024). my beautiful 49 year old macaw seemed to have a little trouble breathing. it was mid afternoon and her regular docter was unavailable on the weekend. i started going to other veterinary hospitals with no luck to see a doctor. i was referred to the medical center for birds. it was a long way from home and she seemed to be getting worse. i was happy that she would be seen by a bird specialist. i thought the establishment must be real good based on their name. was i ever wrong! i was able to see a doctor within a few minutes. the doctor said they were closing for the day but they could keep her overnight or i could take her home. the doctor said my macaw would not survive the trip to my house. i had no choice but to leave her there. i had to leave a deposit of $2,000.00. i asked if she would be treated overnight. then the doctor told me there are no doctors working overnight; however, sometimes doctors would take birds home with them. that didn't happen with my baby. she was just thrown in a cage and left overnight with no one trying to help her. the next day when i called in to them, i was told my macaw was dying and should be put out of her misery. $2,000.00 and no help overnight for her suffering (and mine), the bird i enjoyed for almost 49 years was murdered by the mcfb! dont make the same mistake i did . . . .dont let the so called doctors at the mcfb murder your bird and charge you $2,000 to do so. read more

First time chicken owner and my hen, Henny, was super lethargic, pale, and not acting herself. MCFB got her in immediately. First off, Gail is amazing. I could talk to her all day long! She loves chickens, so that made me feel so much better about having my girl seen there. I really liked the vet, Dr. Beichner, as well. He was very patient with me, especially when I was trying to understand the medical jargon. We came up with a game plan and although the Dr. didn't push to have her hospitalized, I chose to have her hospitalized as I felt comfortable her being monitored by the staff. After the 4th day, we agreed it was time for her to come home and I would continue on with her medication and observation. As the Dr. expected, she continued to improve within time and she has made a full recovery. Although the drive is long, I will continue to come here for my flock. Okay, where do I even start? Medical Center for Birds and all of its staff are TOP NOTCH. I have a toucan who had a rough start to life and, of course, finding a vet that is familiar toucans is tricky enough as it is. I was super nervous when moving away from LA (where we had a fabulous vet) about finding proper care for her. My toucan's former vet referred me to Dr. Speer's practice and assured me "this guy literally wrote the book on avian medicine, lol". And yeah, I think that statement kind of says it all. Not only is Dr. Speer a total bird guru and VERY talented avian vet, he's also incredibly kind and so much fun to talk to. It was such a relief to have my toucan land in such an outstanding vet's care. He's been amazing for everything from caring for her medical needs to grooming to being able to help problem solve and advise on miscellaneous housing and care matters. His facility is beautiful and his staff couldn't be greater. He has multiple, incredibly knowledgeable and caring avian vets on site (what a dream -- seriously) and his techs and receptionists are total angels! This place has it all. We even boarded our toucan there recently and not only were they able to accommodate her in need for a fair deal of space (Dr. Speer actually has custom stainless enclosures he designed himself -- so cool), but also, they made sure she got lots of love and definitely got the princess treatment. Her and one of their techs, Nick, and Dr. Baden were absolute best friends by the time we picked her up from "bird camp". It was truly the sweetest thing and so nice to be able to board her knowing she really was SO well looked after (pampered, really, lol). In short, you cannot go wrong with this place at any turn and I'm so grateful for their continued care for our lil bird! read more

Simply the best. My macaw had a tumor and my regular vet suggested I contact Dr. Speer at Medical Center for Birds. After diagnosis, surgery and treatment, "Moose" is doing great. Now I drive 80 miles one way to take my Blue and Gold Macaw there for veterinary care and boarding. The new facility matches the level of the excellent staff and care you get there. I can not say enough good things about this place and these doctors! Our backyard chicken, Fancy, was ill. Initially the center was too busy and said they couldn't take her. I called back a couple days later when she was still not moving and begged them to make room which they were able to find, so I rushed there. A lot of people mocked us for doing all this for an hen, but Dr Galusha assured me "you've come to a place where a bird is not just a bird." She spent more time on the phone with me than my own doctor would, I literally told people I wish she could be my doctor! :) After three days of care, at a totally reasonable cost, we brought Fancy home who was still not walking. Fast forward and Fancy has made a FULL recovery. When I called Dr Galusha she and I both teared up!! If that isn't a woman who is in her profession for the right reasons, I don't know who is. This center has been a light during a dark pandemic, I am so very grateful. So do I recommend you going? Short Story - I fully trust this place! Experience, information, support - all of it. They have been there for us! For the long story, keep reading! (we have a 5 parrots) We have had several opportunities to bring our feathered friends here, but I will tell you about two times in particular. 1. Last week something got to my daughter's red rump parakeet. She went in her room and he was bleeding from both wings (which for birds is incredibly dangerous). We called the Medical Center for Birds and even though they were booked and it was getting close to closing, they told us to just get in the car and head over - it was a 40 min drive. From Gail and Linda at reception (I cannot say enough amazing things about them!) to our interactions with the doctors, and from start to finish, we felt sincerely cared for, held, and informed. We knew our bird was in the best hands possible. They kept him overnight for several nights, as it appears he likely got into a fight with a mouse on the outside of his cage over his food (totally his personality!) and the mouse pulled his wings though the bars and bit them. I had no idea that could even happen! Our bird is home now recuperating - if he would have gone even a few more hours as he was, with infection spreading from the attack, he would have died. 2. A couple of years ago, we brought my daughter's beloved budgie to a local vet where we live for a check up after another bird (who had been in quarantine) passed away - and he sent us home with an antibiotic for him. When I emailed him a few questions, he told me our budgie was dying, it was an emergency, and to get him to a bird hospital right away. My poor daughter was beside herself. We raced off to the Medical Center for Birds in fear of the worst. The doctor was kind, he was funny, and he clearly had been working with birds for many years. After an exam, he told us the bird was fine and didn't even need to be on the antibiotic! He ran one test to rule out any danger and our budgie has been fine ever since! I brought my sweet baby (7-month old) cockatiel to Medical Center for Birds on a Saturday in January when she was sick, and had been intermittently since I got her from a pet shop in San Francisco. As a new bird owner, I had a lot of first-time pet owner anxiety and was worrying constantly about my little bird (read: I was that annoying pet owner who was highly suspicious of veterinarians and had yet another question to ask, even when you thought I was done). Drs. Crystal Schoellmann and Rachel Baden were her vets for the month or so that she was in their care (on and off). Both were truly excellent, and I greatly appreciated that they worked together to support diagnosis and treatment for my bird. I have deep gratitude to Dr. Schoellmann, whose bedside manner is truly exceptional (she spent a full hour with me when I brought my bird in for the first time, called me every evening with an update, often spending a half-hour with me on each phone call, and accurately reading and allaying my own anxiety when that wasn't even part of her job description). She was also collaborative and direct, highlighting when she wasn't sure there was a solitary "right" thing to do and instead allowing me to choose from options that she presented, which were well-reasoned and scientifically supported. I could tell she worked hard, was eager to learn, and seriously cared about her job. I could also tell she cared for my bird, and understood how special she is to me. She's a truly exceptional resident at this clinic, and I'm just very grateful to her for taking very good care of my bird. The only down-side of this clinic is the cost, but you do get benefits that are hard to find in the Bay Area: a multi-team approach that allows for diversity of medical thought and minimizes the likelihood of individual provider bias, a teaching clinic with residents applying for avian board certification (which Dr. Baden has), and an interest in reading and conducting avian medicine research (which resonated with me as a fellow academic). I'm thankful they are in the area, and glad to call them my sweet bird's vet! read more

I just got back from seeing Dr. Baden at MCFB. I have been taking my now 23 year old Indian ringneck parrot there for about 10 years. I figure it's time i wrote a review! I am always so grateful for the care they provide. I have also seen Dr. Speer over the years. Everyone there is so patient with me as I always have about 100 questions to ask! LOL As my bird continues into her golden years, It's really comforting to know they are just an email or phone call away to help with anything she needs. As a side note, There's been so much change in the veterinarian industry recently with Corporations buying out small businesses, it's so nice to see MCFB thriving with an owner whom is a vet and really cares about the staff. One of, if not the most expensive Avian vets in the Bay area (even beyond) you will walk out with a large bill, and your bird may not get care from a certified avian vet. Furthermore, they may miss obvious signs as they did with us, that are on the top list of illnesses - not once, not twice, but with three exams and a large bill later. Our very ill bird who we were told was fine, obviously was not once she was given back. We brought her to a much better, substantially less expensive avian vet who was able to quickly identify symptoms and properly diagnose the problem within minutes even before tests. Diagnostics confirmed the sadly obvious signs that should have been caught by MCFB. Our bird had to be put out of its misery after agonizing for days at MCFB. Seems they wanted to add up as many costs as possible by shooting her up with shots, force-feeding her when she should not have been, and charging us enormous amounts to board her overnight in an unattended facility, with lower-paid techs during the day, unattended from close - and no phone call from the vet as promised, so we had no say so or idea of our beloved, sick bird's status or to have the option to ease her suffering, scared and alone. Our feeling is this was the standard operating procedure. They made things much worse for our bird and for us as their billing grew and there was no way to save our bird from this hell. See attached for the enormous fees. They misquote over the phone, want your credit card information before you even bring in your bird, and surprise you with a new total at pickup, different than the amount given by multiple staff members before you drove miles to get there with a sick bird, anxious to get answers and relief for your parrot. We absolutely do NOT recommend MCFB. They are not worth their inflated costs or the similarly inflated ego, particularly of the owner, who once realizing you are price-conscious (after already getting a lot of money from you) does not deliver and misleads you to come to pick your bird in "fine and acceptable" condition. If you want to save your bird and yourself the upset and unnecessary drain on your savings, DO NOT GO HERE! read more

My sun conure showed signs of early sickness by fluffing up his feathers. I called Medical center for birds. They said I could come in and have my bird checked out. They did a full exam, blood work, and they found he was vitamin-A deficient and anemic. After two days in their care, I took my sun conure home, and he was wheezing and gasping for air. I called medical center for birds back. They said they're all booked for the day with no openings. I ended up just making the appointment because my bird was still eating well. They wanted to do x-rays, but they couldn't because he had been eating all day. The crop had to be empty. They wanted to keep him overnight so that they could do the x-ray early in the morning. I called to check, and the vet said he was eating and doing well. They said we've been busy, and they hadn't gotten to my bird, but if they could they'd like to keep him for another day. I said yes. Next day, they did exams and called me back. They said his x-ray was clean and there was no lung infection. My sun conure's appetite started decline. I called them back. They said "we don't want to your bird anymore. You're going to have to take your bird to an emergency vet." So, I called UC Davis emergency veterinary medicine. They said to come in right away. I took my bird there. They kept him overnight for observation. They did a full exam early in the morning. I gave them full approval to do what they needed to, and that money wasn't an issue. The x-rays at UC Davis came back showing fluid in his lungs with an enlarged liver and broken wing. That was why he was wheezing. He couldn't lift his wing because it was broken from trauma. They also diagnosed him with Borna virus. My Sun Conure could have gotten Borna virus before Medical Center for Birds or was exposed to it in their care. I can't prove anything there. What I can say for sure is that before I sent my Sun Conure to Medical center for birds, he was not wheezing. He had no broken bones. He was flying around happily, and his appetite was good. It was not until my Sun conure was in their care for 2 days that he showed serious health issues. I find it suspicious that they told me they didn't want to care for my Sun Conure anymore after I received him back from them. Read other negative reviews on here. They just want money. They prolong giving you your test results and refuse to release the results over the phone and instead ask you to make more appointments with them. read more

Dr. Speer is bar none the best avian vet you could wish for. When Kali the eclectus parrot first arrived two years ago, I made a beeline for Dr. Speer for her initial checkup as her breeder in Michigan told me that if I was close, Dr. Speer was the vet I should take Kali to as he is an expert on the species. I wish my doctors had as good of a bedside manner as Dr. Speer. He is extremely knowledgeable and it is obvious that he cares greatly for birds. He took great care in handling and examining Kali and explaining the basics of birdie care. He does not believe in rushing exams and spends as much time as necessary in order to provide a comprehensive checkup. On her most recent checkup last week, he again spent a good deal of time calming Kali down and performing a very thorough exam. Kali was not happy to be there and struggled quite a bit when Dr. Speer was trying to draw a blood sample, he was very patient with her and waited until she calmed down enough for him to stick her with the needle. I like it that Dr. Speer explains what he is doing and is thorough in explaining bird behavior and opts for a less is more approach. While other vets may recommend giving hormone shots to avoid bad behavior, Dr. Speer believes in the less is more approach and talked about some ways I can distract her from her nesting behavior. I'm quite a drive away but will not go to anyone other than Dr. Speer if I can help it. read more
