Medici's is a special little gem in Mānoa transporting you to a magical space filled with music, food, and happiness. The club opened in April of 2014 and features jazz, blues, classical musicians in Hawaii. This was our second time here and loved it. Tim and Carolyn (owners) are very welcoming couple who work in tandem to operate this place. Tim is the chef, artist, and manages the music events upstairs. Carolyn is the musical director for the school downstairs. All proceeds from dinner/shows help support the Manoa School of Music and the Arts downstairs. The ambiance is beautiful and well-decorated with plants, art, paintings. Tim is an artist, so you will find his paintings for sale too. We took one home during the NYE event and admire it everyday. Your ticket includes live music and a tasty 4 course gourmet meal who is cooked by Chef Tim. Just a word of warning is that the meal is on the smaller side. The dishes are served on mostly paper plates but I assume that's how they also keep the costs lower. Most of the attendees seem to be 50+ so the food might be catering to those who are older and don't eat as much. Although we ended up being content by the end with drinks. You will likely end up sitting with strangers since the tables are large, circular, and can seat up to 6-8 people. This can be a good way to socialize and make some new friends. They also have a bar that has very reasonable prices. $25 wine bottles and only $7.50 for beer/wine glasses. Cocktails available too. Medici's is interesting. The proceeds from the show and dinner support the Manoa School of Music & The Arts, which is downstairs. The husband and wife Tim & Carolyn Stanton operate in tandem (he, the restaurant and shows; she the music school). While waiting for the show, other patrons joked with me to come for the shows and just eat the food. Tim and his staff try their best to put out a great meal. The food was good, but served on paper goods. Silverware was actually metal. The night that I went. Granted, it was only their second show since reopening due to the pandemic and they had some new staff. My table mates ordered drinks, and the glasses were a different size each time. I give Tim credit for still coming out and schmoozing with patrons at each table and thanking them for their support. Nevertheless, the shows they put on are top notch and money goes to support a wonderful school. read more

We went to Medici Supper Club to hear The Hot Club of Hulaville. The space is intimate and we sat next to the stage, by the piano. There were clear plastic curtains on moveable stands on the stage to distance the performers from the audience. COVID-19 check-in consisted of taking our temperature; since we prepaid, there was no need to fill in any forms. We shared a table with three ladies from North Carolina so there wasn't much in the way of distancing at each table. The food was served on paper dinnerware and this, although understandable, probably contributed to my overall impressions of the cuisine. We started with a bowl of soup (Wild Thai Chicken) that tasted like Penang curry; followed by a simple salad with an Italian vinaigrette dressing. This was followed by a small bowl of Moroccan Vegetable Tagine, which was a mélange of vegetables in a sweet but savory gravy. Shepherd's pie was next; this to me was the most successful of the dishes; it was a square of pie and was very tasty. Finally, a slice of lemon cake with sliced berries and what was described as crème fraiche ... more like a whipped topping to me. One could order wine by the glass or go to the bar and select bottles. I chose a pinot noir from Bouchard Aine & Fils; a very pleasant wine for $20.83. Wines by the bottle were "the deal", a glass cost $8 and cocktails were almost double that. Now, the reason we came .... The Hot Club of Hulaville. That night it was a trio and they played for a little more than two hours with a break between sets. Nothing beats live, acoustic music. The sound was excellent, not too loud (this is coming from a musician), with good clarity. Five stars for the entertainment. So, my impressions ... the food is good and would be better served on dinnerware, not paper plates. They were short-handed two servers and the place was essentially full so I give them credit for the service provided. You can't beat the cost of wine by the bottle; there's nothing special but for $20, you cannot find fault. They plan more frequent events, I would return without hesitation, depending on the artist. read more

The venue is intimate and it allows you to see and meet the musician you plan to go see. As for the food that is what made it go from 5 to 4 stars. First of all the food is served on paper goods. It was ver inconsistent with the serving. Our friends go like a few spoons of soup where it was for a child. The potatoes looked well done for me and better for others. I couldn't eat the top it was burnt. I will eat the next time before i come here. I don't know if they think it out the different flavors when you eat their 4 course meal. This is my second time came to Medici's and I was extremely upset how they handle covid protocols. In my opinion, they should be closed because they don't care about the government issued required COVID guidelines. We were informed by the owner that we were the first ones who booked the tickets so they gave us the best seats, balcony. But in my opinion, balcony is the worst seats because we can't really see the performance at all. The balcony is very small and they squeezed five seats. Before we arrived, there were already a party of three seated. We were seated with those people we don't know. They shouldn't seat us with other three people in such a small shared table in the first place, and they didn't offer any plastic barrier which against covid protocol. I talked to one of the waiters and they finally put a plastic barrier between us, but the table part was not protected. I felt extremely uncomfortable but since we already paid the tickets and they cannot refund us. The tickets indicated the Honolulu jazz quartet started at 6:30 pm, but the bassist and pianist arrived around 7:10 pm. And the performance started around 7:30 pm. I'm a musician myself and being late for performance without any explanation or apology are unacceptable. The performance is great, but the saxophone player isn't the best, he couldn't even play the heads in when played a Chick Corea tune very well, which again makes me doubt their professionalism. The foods are very mediocre, and they definitely don't worth $59 per person. I definitely do not recommend this place and I really hope the owner could take covid seriously. read more

First, the music was great! We loved Tommy James on the piano and Dean Taba on Bass. However, the dinner, particularly the entree was an embarrassment. We didn't know what we were eating, some mashed up pasta( like a tuna helper) and mushy rice which didn't even pair with an Italian entree. The food shouldn't have been served to people. First, let me say that the music was incredible. John Kolivas and the Honolulu Jazz quartet never disappoint. They are always Five Star! Thing is, we had been looking forward to this experience for a long time. Since the website builds itself up as a Supper Club, we had high expectations First, I thought it was cool that there's an actual music school downstairs, but when we checked in, we were told we were on table D. Well, table D was full, so we hunted around and found we were on table B. The tables were round plastic tables covered with a tablecloth, paper napkins and stainless flatware(which had spots). Someone came over and dropped a carafe of water on the table and said if we wanted drinks, we had to walk up to the bar. Getting back to the round tables. It's a tight squeeze in there and being seated on a round table means someone will have their backs to the entertainment. The tables and chairs look like they were bought at Sam's club, which would have been fine if they bought the long tables, so everyone could see. Tim was not the Chef that night, which was too bad because the amuse bouche was cut too thick and really hard to eat. The entree vegetables were frozen peas and carrots. One thing to note is that there is no elevator to the second floor. So John had to carry his bass up the stairs. Not sure if there's ADA access. read more

Lovely, cozy little setup. When you walk in, you feel like you're entering someone's home--fake flowers and oil paintings everywhere. The rug going up the narrow stairway creates this warm, comforting "grandma's house" sort of feeling; however, if you are in a wheelchair, you will most definitely have difficulty accessing the venue. They offer lots of amazingly talented jazz musicians. I got the opportunity to catch Gypsy 808 there. They did a superb job that night. Medici's is a small intimate venue. There's some space for swing dancers off to the side near the stairs up to the bar, but sometimes, the dancers move toward the middle of the stage which might block your view of the band. It seems like the people who come here are regulars. Everyone seemed to know each other. There was a moment where a woman started watching a video on her phone in between songs, and she was immediately shushed by some audience members. The room has greatly amplified acoustics, so please be respectful of the band; speak quietly, don't answer calls, and put your phone on silent. As mentioned earlier, there's a bar at the top of a couple of steps in a loft type of area. They have very cheap drinks and cocktails. A bottle of cab is only $20 and a glass is only $6! Love that! The whisky sour was delicious although, I can't remember how much I paid... Maybe I had too many... Overall, it was a lovely evening. Next time, I need to try the buffet! read more

Medici's is a gem of a live music venue located on the 2nd floor of Manoa Marketplace (and connected to the Manoa School of Art and Music). This past Saturday, my BF and I went to check out the Honolulu Jazz Quartet with special guest, DeShannon Higa. The band was simply amazing! The acoustics in the room are superb!! The owner and bartender were very welcoming!!! The room seems to fit about 35 or less on the lower level. There are mostly a couple rows of folding chairs and a good number of chairs around little tables, which is perfect if you plan to drink and/or eat. Also, the fliers say to get there early for the best seats but it seems that you can call ahead to reserve a table, which is a plus if you end up going with a small group. The upstairs level features a bar in one area, and a banquette table with seats that look down at the band. We were told they don't always sell alcohol but this past Saturday they had some hard liquor (vodka but i can't remember what else), a few bottled beers (Guinness and Angry Orchard Cider are 2 that I recall) and wine. However, Medici's is also BYOB ($5 corkage fee/bottle or 6 pack), which really helped me since I'm pinching pennies. It's also convenient that Safeway is around the corner because during intermission, my BF ran over to pickup a 2nd bottle of wine. Their food selection is also worth checking out. They offer an all-you-can-eat salad bar ($15, also included desserts). The salads included greens but also couscous, deli meats and cheeses, breads, etc. They have pizza at $5/slice (we got veggie - it wasn't the best but it was satisfactory). And, they'll do an entree of the day - on Saturday it was Moroccan beef served with a rice side dish ($12); I think that also came with a naan bread and chutney. Next time I'll try the entree! Cover was $20 but I don't know if that varies by night. Please check this place out! It's so great to find a sweet setting for live music and super fun to head into Manoa. Last night's performance at Medici's Supper Club in Manoa was a delectable delight for both ears and palate. Particularly so after a year of veritable pandemic starvation on both fronts. Owners Tim and Carolyn Stanton were our always-delightful hosts with a careful eye to COVID safety throughout. Shari Lynn, long time pianist Jim Howard and bassist John Kolivas wowed the audience with hours of wide ranging Broadway hits. They certainly gave us our money's worth (at just $60 per ticket) for both a tasty multi-course dinner featuring my favorite - a beefy, handcrafted Shepherd's Pie, and their standing ovation performance. A hard working wait staff served guests at our seats in lieu of a traditional buffet with a sense of humor and warmth. As a budding bass player, I was especially intrigued by John's silky smooth solos, not to be out done by Jim's creative ivories - all perfectly supporting Shari's unmistakeable and unforgettable vocals. My guest, Leo, was especially pleased when Shari sang a Barbara Streisand classic from Funny Girl upon request. Clearly the stuff of memories. As we left Medici's in Manoa, a light sprinkling blessed us, as if to wash away the trials of the past year and to welcome a refreshing, renewed era of lovely, and lively, real time entertainment. We can't wait to return to Medici's and also to catch the Shari Lynn trio again this July 2021. Kudos! read more

Great Jazz place for real aficionados. The venue is nice except for all the fake flowers that are everywhere. It would look more serious if they were removed and keep an industrial look. Got talent? At Medici's, you'll find plenty. I took the wife and daughter here to see/hear DeShannon Higa and QuadPod. That Saturday night, QuadPod was Larry Cook on tenor sax, Ethan Capone on piano, Jon Hawes on bass, and Darryl Pellegrini on drums. They were supposed to be joined by vocalist Rocky Brown, but she was under the weather. Man, these guys can play. And with such obvious pleasure and passion. For most of 3 hours, we were treated to a variety of music---covers, show tunes, and original compositions---all uniquely jazz-ified by DeShannon and company. We were seated on the "Protea" table so got to experience all that talent and sweet music up close and personal. Cover charge $20. No drink minimum, and BYOB for $5. Plenty of free parking in the Manoa Marketplace. With only 9 tables of 6 seats each, Medici's is cozy. The band looked a little less comfortable on the small stage. Some of their body movements (from really feeling their music) seemed careful and abbreviated. No crotch grabs ala Michael Jackson thank you. Just some innocent swaying and head-bobbing. But the music was as fine as you'd hear in some of the best jazz clubs in New York I'd wager. There is also a small mezzanine with a small bar, and where the salad bar is set up. I wouldn't call the salad bar "massive", but there were quite a few tasty offerings. For $20 you got 2 visits, and 1 visit to a cookie bar. That night there was clam chowder, penne pasta and mini meatballs in a tomato sauce to go along with several different salads, and a bunch of different dips and relishes. Owner Tim Stanton is a man of many talents. He is an artist, cook (he makes all the dishes on the salad bar), and perfect host. A more friendly, generous, gentleman you'll not easily find. He and his wife, Carolyn, are dedicated to sharing their knowledge with others and helping them find their own talents. They do it "so you will have more love, compassion, gentleness, good--in short, more life!" Reportedly, all of the profits from Medici's support the Manoa School of Art and Music downstairs---the Stantons' other venture. In that light, or on that note, the cover charge is a bargain, and a worthy investment in future artists. read more

Just recently I was under considerable pressure, nearly on the verge of pulling my hair out and Medicis came through. One might ask, "how did Medicis come through"? Well, I had asked a certain someone out and she said yes. Thus, the pressure to make everything right was on. I spent considerable time perusing various sources of information in an effort to find something for us to enjoy that was appealing, entertaining, yet not the typical waikiki experience. As it turned out we both enjoy Jazz, so I noticed a small place I hadn't heard of (Medicis) featuring a live Latin Jazz Band (as was advertised) and which also served dinner. Now, this place is very small with approximately 10 to 12 tables and a loft space near the bar with additional seating for about 5-6 people. So when they do host music events, which I believe are Fridays and Saturdays. I highly encourage reservations. Especially if the musical group is popular. Calling and speaking to someone for reservations may be tough, as I encountered. I ended up making reservations through their website and followed up with a phone message the next day to confirm. Which they replied to. Located in the shopping center in Manoa its a little tough to find as its located in tucked away spot easily missed if you are driving through the parking lot. Once we entered we were greeted at the door and escorted to our table. The band was very good (I believe it was headed by Thomas McKay). We enjoyed three hours of fantastic music and great conversation. Dinner was buffet style with an assortment of selections for varying tastes. Interestingly, Medicis hosts other events throughout the week, such as dance classes and from what the owner mentioned, Zumba. So for jazz and dinner being one of their many endeavors they did well. As for my date, It went off without a hitch and we both had a great time. Im a new found fan. So if there are any more jazz ensembles I find appealing performing at Medicis, I would return. read more

First, a positive: they hire great musicians to perform. The bummer: gigs that are advertised get cancelled all the time. I planned to bring 15 students for a Friday performance. I called on Thursday morning to reserve our spots, and the owner had not only cancelled the performance, but then chastised me for not making the reservation by Wednesday. Their website and Facebook page say nothing about needing to reserve by Wednesday. After I mentioned that to the owner, he yelled at me and hung up the phone. Whoa. Our first time here and was truly impressed with the venue and the artist featured "Ginai" with a tribute to Anita Baker so sensual, sexy and smooth sounds. Ambiance was inviting, the food was lite and tasty. Tables spaced evenly, sounds pleasing. I'm sure folks would have enjoyed a little dancing however, I couldn't resist I jumped up and get my groove on then the couple next to us got up and joined me. That was pretty cool. We will definitely return as time permits!! Overall, great place for a date night, friends night out highly recommend. No hassles with parking or traffic. Recently went, at the door the woman took our temps, we were all below 97 degrees. She laughed and said the battery was low. I didn't think too much about it. Got to our table, set for 6. We were a party of two. Reservation tents showed another party of 3 sharing our table. Chairs are slammed together, literally inches between each person. We asked the waiter if he could clear the empty place setting to give us all a little more breathing room. He was pleasant and said he would ask management. Then the owner came to table, he was angry and hostile before I said a word, threatening to throw us out. When he finally paused to catch his breathe, I calmly asked my question about clearing the vacant place setting. He indignantly refused saying they planned to sell the seat. ( It remained empty.) I thanked him for the answer and said we were good. He seemed perplexed that I wasn't ready to take the bait and rise to his level of hostility. He walked away without a word. The waiter apologized and offered a free glass of wine. The jazz was great, but I have never been so poorly treated as a customer. So just be aware, their Covid protocols are a joke, defective thermometer and no social distancing. The owner is hostile and itching for conflict. I think I may switch to the Blue Note. read more

I keep trying to write my review for this fantastic venue. My wife and I celebrated our 40th anniversary there on April 7. We sat at a table about six feet from the performers: Ryan Souza (vocals), Arlene (violin) and Ruth (piano and vocals) and were treated to a wonderful experience, our most memorable anniversary celebration. The hostess, Carolyn Stanton, (co-owner with her husband Tim), talks to everyone and treats everyone as family. A chef prepares the wide variety of international salads which were delicious (and I am not a salad guy). The venue is small, but entertainment outstanding. The price for the show and salad, $32, is a steal (just shows that the Stantons are more interested in providing exceptional entertainment at a very reasonable price). It's a wonderful place to hear live music (only $20 cover) and their salad bar is amazing...plus you get the cookie bar included and it's only $15. They also serve a special entre on weekends but we didn't try that, although we were told it's quite good. It's also BYOB so you can bring whatever you prefer to drink with a minimal corkage charge of $5 per bottle of wine or 6 pack of beer. Attended last night's show (Feb 4). The setting cannot get much better. Small, intimate, and welcoming makes it a great place to enjoy good jazz. The line up is often comprised of both visiting and local talent. The Brownman Electryc Trio was amazing. Locals Mark Kanoi (sp?) on the 6 string electric guitar and Bonnie Bonaparte (sp?) on drums. Mark was transfixed while playing. Bonnie was a delight to watch. He loved performing and we knew it by his smiles. There are typically two sets starting at 7:30 then a break. The break usually consists of food, bar or bathroom visits. But last night The Brownman talked to the audience the entire time. He is engaging and open to any/all questions that may come from the audience. A number of ladies asked for selfies with them. The Brownman was in town from Canada. He blows a mean trumpet. He is an interesting individual aside from his music. He has a degree in physics! He expects to visit annually. The live music and atmosphere are outstanding here! I'll have to try the food next time, but everyone around us seemed to be enjoying theirs.
