I have lived in Santa Fe all my life. It is so nice to be able to use a service for the first time and not get taken. They were professional, knowledgeable, local, and walked me through the good, the bad, and the ugly. They know their job and performed it professionally. I did my homework so that I knew what I might be in store for. They didn't take advantage of me and their recommendations were not outrageous or over priced. After contacting several others I started seeing a pattern of how others approached the situation. They set me up for the future ease of maintenance regardless of who I called and told me that whoever did the cleaning and emptying next time would have a much easier time which would cost me less in the future. Doing the right thing when no one would know the difference is called "integrity". Nice to see that it exists. I'm going to call them again because I know they do what is needed, efficiently and affordably. If it was possible to give them 6 stars I would. I am overall delighted with the expedient, professional, kind, and caring service rendered to me by Medina. They were able to prioritize the routine service of pumping out my home septic tank, at 10:00 AM the morning after I called, already into the early Hanukkah Christmas holiday season. When I asked if I could split my payment by 2 credit cards, the owner, Frank, actually lowered the price for me, which made a huge difference, softening the blow of my already surprising home expense. Who doesn't love being on the receiving end of a random Act of financial kindness?! They called in advance and came out a half hour early, as a slot opened up. They assured me that my old tank looked good and they invited me to come out and view it before, and after the tank pumping job, which I did. They advised me that cutting down the major large tree shading and sheltering the whole house, would be in the best interest of protecting the leach field and septic system. I explained that it was very intentionally placed, and it would not be my interest, nor on my budget to clear it, now. They advised keeping a watchful Eye on t's effects & growth. They also noted some of the leaky faucets, which I have both repaired and not, where adversely effecting the leach field. They were very efficient, and professional, still very thorough and caring in reviewing extra info as it effects my septic system. They highlighted that if the large Russian Olive shade tree roots start to penetrate the septic system or leach field, it could quickly turn into a $5,000 job/expense. When I read their Yelp reviews, I see some less flattering reports, all relating to issues with tree and root problems. So I am unclear about why this seems more problematic with Medina than other Septic Service providers. Suffice to say for my small job, I had only a good experience. For a bigger job, I might factor in calling someone with a stronger track record on saving both the trees and septic systems, simultaneously. Yet their advice may still hold merit, through the long haul! Grateful for the simple service so far. My friends tried to tell me that septic tanks are designed not to need emptying. Mine functions best, being emptied every 2 1/2 years or so. All good food for thought and action. It was an educational day! read more

My septic backed up. They came out when promised. Took them 2 days to find the tank, a day of digging and pumping and 1/2 a day putting my garden back like they were never there. I wish I could say this review was as hard to write as the other reviewer, but my experience with this company had been just as awful and it has unfortunately spanned 13 years. If not for the extreme similarities between the other review and my experience, I'd have just let it go and started the process of erasing my experience with Medina Septic Service from my mind after another horrible experience this past week. In the summer of 2004 my wife and I purchased a home and property just north of Santa Fe, NM with the intent of opening a Bed & Breakfast. The county demanded that we update the existing septic system and bring the entire system into code compliance. We hired Medina Septic Service based on the professionalism we initially perceived and their stated ability to start quickly on our project which included an entire new system installation. The trouble started almost immediately after they received our deposit check and we asked for a timeline on when the work would be started and expected to be finished. We were told that all the parts of the system were readily available locally and assurances were given that our job would be started promptly. A few weeks went by and we inquired about our project. Excuses about trucks breaking down were given. Another couple weeks went by and we were never contacted proactively about the repairs to the equipment. Every phone call by us was met with resistance, more excuses along with hostility as if we were bothering them. Once the equipment was finally repaired, we were told that they were way behind on all the septic tank pumpouts they had been scheduled to do while the truck was down. Our $8,000 job was being delayed further in order to catch up on $250 tank pumpouts. By now a few months had gone by and we were getting anxious about the upcoming fall rains making the job more difficult. When we were finally told that the job would be put off until the owner and his son returned from a month long elk hunting trip, we asked to be released from our agreement in order to seek out another contractor. We were threatened with legal action and told to be patient because a contract was signed and that's the way it works in NM. When the work finally began a month later, it was done in pouring rain and the area the new tank and leach field were planned to go in was flanked by two 40-50' tall Sycamore and Cottonwood trees which created a beautiful, shady appeal to our front yard. In their haste the excavator slipped around the entire time and they severed several key roots on each of these magnificent trees which were easily over 50-60 years old. Over the course of the next two years, each tree died and had to be cut down at our expense exposing our yard to the glaring, hot sun. We were so disappointed in the handling of our project, we chose other providers when we needed septic tank pumpouts over the years and thought we were done with them forever. Fast forward to several weeks ago and the final thing required to sell our property was the certification of the septic systems and pumping of the tanks. Against our wishes, our realtor called Medina because their name was on the permit for the system and he thought they'd be able to easily handle such simple tasks without any problems. First, they quoted him a price in the $1,200 range to certify and pump what is essentially two systems on the property. Then they blew him off for a few weeks and it looked like they might jeopardize the closing of the sale. Our agent begged them to do it to keep the sale moving forward. On the originally scheduled day of the closing, they finally showed up and did the work and allegedly had to replace a couple parts that had corroded. Parts that they originally put in as recently as 2004. I looked up one of them online through a commercial plumbing supply house and it costs under $50. We were charged $325 for it. Several small holes needed to be dug to test the porosity of the soil for the inspector and they charged $60 per hole for six of these small relatively shallow holes. All in all, our final bill more than doubled from the original verbal estimate without any notification or warning to our agent or us. For a job that took one or two people about an 8 hour day to accomplish. As the memory of our time living in New Mexico fades, we hope the disappointment of dealing with this company also fades. read more

This is a hard review to write. On the one hand, Steve Medina really knows septic systems and regulations and codes, and he was very friendly and informative. On that note, I'd give 4-5 stars. But... A couple things did not go smoothly, and in perhaps a more important sense than the work itself, these couple things say a lot: 1) They killed a big tree by digging thru many of the roots (and what's worse, there was plenty of room to move the drain field so as not to be so close to the roots). I would have thought that someone like Steve, being in his business for so long (decades), would generally know approximately how close/deep he can get to a tree before the tree suffers major damage or death...after all, Steve has probably installed/repaired hundred and hundreds of septic systems. But it didn't happen...he got way to close, and the tree died...in 2 weeks...and what's worse, when Steve was contacted about the dying/dead tree, he said "you signed the contract saying you approved trimming the tree, and therefor, we are not responsible." Yes, the word is TRIMMING. Well to ME, and I believe ANY reasonable person, the meaning of the word "trimming" would never result in anywhere NEAR the end result of KILLING the tree. I think it's really tragic for Steve to try to hide behind the word trimming. 2) They left behind a few tree branches (THIS was the "trimming" I thought we had agreed to)...when I called about the branches that were left laying in the yard, Steve said "it's not in the contract to take away the tree branches"...OK...my bad...MAYBE...I was under the impression that under the normal course of doing good business (esp for the price we paid), folks clean up after themselves. Hard to believe something that basic has to be spelled out in a contract. But to Steve's credit, and after we talked, Steve did indeed come over to clean up for no extra charge. Bottom line...Steve apparently did a very good job installing the septic field (won't know for a few years)...BUT...be careful about the contract...read every word...BUT SADLY YOU NEED TO GO FURTHER THAN THAT...it turns out you need to ask Steve HIS meaning of every word...as I would NEVER think "trimming" would mean hacking into a tree SO FAR that it kills it. That was a beautiful tree. Very sad. read more

These guys have helped me limp along for a couple of years with two nearly saturated septic fields on the property, They have been kind, responsive, and professional. Their truck and hoses are always sparkling clean; just keep an eye out for them on the streets and roads around Santa Fe! They also gave me an excellent recommendation for someone to come in and redo the leach field. I shouldn't have to call them again for a couple of years. read more
