The salon itself seems fine. I think it's the most expensive in the area and I can't quite figure out why. Starr cut my hair and it was literally the worst experience I've ever had at a salon. I wish I'd read the reviews on Yelp before I'd gone, because I see very similar complaints. He rushed me, could not have cared less about what I wanted, told me my hair was in need of a ton of some expensive product that I had to buy, and then I had to pay a whopping $73. I could have had someone at Supercuts give me an identical cut. I didn't leave a tip which I felt very badly about, but Starr certainly didn't seem concerned about making sure I was happy with his work, so... Will not return and urge others not to get a cut by Starr. Unless you want to pay a ton of $$ for a dirty finger-nailed hipster diva to make you feel like crap. read more

I've been searching for the perfect stylist/salon since I moved to the East coast....seven years ago! Imagine something akin to Brad Pitt in 7 years in Tibet. (without a good haircut). We all know what it's about, the hair! I've literally seen Ugly ducklings transformed with a good cut. Now I walked in with a tragedy. The sideways mullet or as my girlfriend lovingly referred to it as "the lobotomy" Yeah, cute. By the hands of Fate (in my favor for once!) I landed in the uber-skilled hands of Kim. Please if you are nit-picky about apt. times don't bother. I was scheduled for 6:30 as I was walking there at 6:15 I got a courtesy call to say Kim was running about 15 mins. late. I love this place! It is easy to get an appointment and the staff is accommodating. I usually go to Mary and I have some friends that swear by Heather. Both are knowledgeable and friendly. Mary does a great job with my bob. Sometimes I want to change my hair, maybe add more layers or cut bangs. Mary does a great job listening and making helpful suggestions. I also like the ladies that wash my hair. They do a thorough job and are very gentle. My haircuts are the usual $50-$60 without tip and I'll pay it because they do a great job. read more

I had my hair cut here this weekend for the for the first time. My previous stylist just kept getting less and less attentive, so it was time for a change. My hair is a really annoying texture of fine, overly-plentiful AND kinda/sorta curly, but Lynne did a great job with it. It was like she could read my mind and gave me the exact cut I have been yearning for. The music and atmosphere were great as well. I only resist giving 5 stars because they are cash (or check) only--I understand being cash only for tips, but for the whole thing...it's just annoying to have to go grab a big wad of cash on your way in. read more

tess has again done a great job! this is my second experience with demi-gloss color. i have (had) naturally red hair until my daughters were born and they downloaded almost all of it from me! thanks to demi-gloss, and tess's expert judgement, i'm able to return my hair to the glory of my natural red! it looks real - the inherent shade and color variations of my own hair is maintained by the gloss, as opposed to being covered up by traditional hair colors. maybe y'all know this already, but it is a revelation to me! so if you're afraid of hair color, try a gloss! and tess. totes brill! read more

I'm from out of town. Mary took me at the last minute, I was 15 minues late, and it was 6:30 pm the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. She did a great job, put me at ease, and got me styled and out feeling great. The retro murals are worth a peek in their own right. I was told the price started at $40, and I was a little nervous about what I'd be charged, as she seemed to put in extra time. Does exactly what I want, suggests things I may not have thought of, and is super nice and kind. I signed up for Yelp just to review this place, because it would be rude to not tell everyone how good they are. Of course, any salon is really only as good as the person who's cutting your hair. I got Candace, and she gave me the best haircut I've ever had. I brought a picture, and she executed it perfectly, taking me from a blunt-cut bob to a razor-cut longish pixie. My friends and coworkers won't shut up about how good it looks, and total strangers have asked me where I got it done. Medusa is amazing!! Warm atmosphere, thoughtful haircut. This was my first time putting any color in my hair and I am so happy with the "glaze" I got! My hair is now super shiny, soft. I've had a mix of experiences at Medusa but over all they have been positive. It's just about finding the right person for your hair. Candice and Brittany are excellent hair dressers but were not really equipped to deal with my 'curly to the root' mass of hair. Marisol was fantastic but Tara was by far the best, she styles my hair better and faster than any stylist I've ever been to. She is a gem! Super sweet and knows exactly whats she's doing. My hairstylist-I think her name was Susie- was very professional, not to mention cute and fun :) She did a great job layering my hair- which is not easy considering my hair is so thick and wavy. Plus, the haircut was only 20 bucks! I think it was so cheap because she was an apprentice but by the way she styled my hair I would have thought she was a veteran hair cutter. Tess is amazing! I went to a very expensive salon to get my hair cut and it was a disaster. I looked like the lead singer of a bad 80s metal band. I went to Medusa to try to get it fixed and Tess turned the worst haircut I've ever had into one of the best. She didn't even trash the other stylist, which would have been an easy thing to do. She just said, "what did you ask for?" and then calmly turned the whole thing around. I love my hair, and I've gotten tons of compliments. I have curly, fine hair - which can be very difficult. just moved & wanted a hair salon close to my apartment. I have bleached hair and wanted to go back to my original color w/ highlights. I asked for someone who is very good with color, I was told "everyone here is great with color". I felt like I wasn't taken care of, and just got color slapped together. 300$ and 4 hours later, I had purple ends and gold roots. bleg. And of course, there was no time to fix the color that day. Had to go back next day for another 4 hours and have the color bleached out. boo. My hair is already a mess, so I was pretty pissed. especially paying 300$. if you got something that might be problematic, go to Jamie Starr--I should have just waited for an appointment w/ him. as I was getting my hair dyed purple, plenty of folks came and went in Jamie's chair, and all were extremely happy. Also, Salon is not laid out very well. too crowded. I really wanted to like this place, but I can't recommend it. read more

After looking for a salon in the area that didn't judge me or charge me a fortune I stumbled across Medusa- lets just say the long search has come to an end. This place is wonderful. The staff is extremely friendly an accommodating. I got my hair done by Patrick who is exceptional at what he does. He turned my boring brown hair into possibly the best looking dye job I have ever gotten. I have gotten so many compliments on the vibrant color change while still having it look natural and shiny. Even with a double process, he minded to keep my hair healthy in order to achieve the color red I desired. I would recommend him to anyone going for a touch up or for going for an entire hair makeover. The place itself is adorable, it has a vintage vibe while still being clean, edgy and hip. It's totally refreshing in the world of NY/BK hair salons that thrive on making their clients feel uncomfortable and charging 500 dollars for a trim. Never again. They do decent work, but nothing special in my experience. It's expensive, and totally not worth the price, considering the attendant aggravation. They absolutely do not respect your time. I had two appointments that somehow never made it into the book, despite my having repeated my phone number and name. Both times, I had to come back 45 minutes later when someone was ready. I complained the second time, and they were very apologetic. So I gave them another shot, and everything went smoothly. I made an appointment for highlights. They confirmed the day before. When I got there my stylist was working on someone else. I sat with a magazine and was ignored for 45 minutes before they told me it would be about another ten. I didn't wait. Third time's the charm. I'll take my business elsewhere. read more

I am getting married. I wanted to have another trial run with this hairstylist that will do my hair for the wedding. I was hoping the second trial run, she could make it cheaper for me. I had to pay 100 dollars for the first one. The nasty lady that I talked to on the phone wouldn't even try to accommodate me and wouldn't even let me make an appointment with her. She literally blew me off, even after I decided to pay for the full price for the next trial. I don't know who she is but because of her, my hairstylist lost business. read more

i got may hair cut here last week as a walk-in appointment. (i took the day off work because i was sick, and the weather was sunny so i decided to walk into park slope to get my hair cut. i called up and they had an afternoon appointment open). the appointment was for 3pm, i got there at 2:50 because i was killing time in the barnes and noble. my stylist (she introduced herself but i forgot her name...) arrived at 3:12 because mass transit sucks. whatevs, i didnt mind waiting. she had the "hair washer" wash my hair and get it wet for the cut, then clipped away. she gave me exactly what i asked for except that she took about an inch more off than i asked for. im giving medusa three stars because i think my cut was overpriced (68 bucks plus a tip for the stylist and for the "hair washing girl". i never get my hair "styled" when i get it cut. i basically just need someone to cut off the dead tips all the way around my head. i would do it myself if i could cut the back evenly. read more
