My boyfriend attempted to cut my hair Sunday night and it went poorly and I desperately needed a haircut. This is one of the only places I could find with appointments on Monday so I took a chance and booked with Amy. Although she rescheduled and was late the the appointment, I am so pleased with my experience and would gladly come back. She did such a good job working with my hair and giving me a haircut I genuinely liked under the circumstances lol. The experience was overall positive, but the scheduling thing is something to keep in mind because I did see others mentioned it in their reviews. Definitely will plan to come back to her in a few months! There is plenty of parking and the building wasn't too hard to find at all. There's a small parking lot behind, which is a huge bonus. The atmosphere inside is a combination of edgy (there's a huge bike chain chandelier), hipster (staff has a colorful mix of hair, tattoos, & piercings themselves), and bougie (upscale hippy bath salts & hair products for sale, waiting space with a vintage couch, etc). All of which is wrapped in multiple colors of purple walls and a feeling that everyone there genuinely wants to be there & enjoys their work. The staff are professional and friendly with good advice & great ideas. I watched several other customers come and go (my hair had multiple processes that took time) and each one looked fantastic & happy as they left. Staff was able to talk freely but didn't mind the gaps in conversation if the client wasn't feeling chatty. It never felt awkward. I had a long appointment/consult with Amy and she suggested a great cut & a different color pattern than I walked in thinking about. There was no pressure & she was happy to do whatever I wanted. I am *so* glad I let her go with her more creative idea. I love the outcome so much. It really pays to follow the expert's lead, especially when doing artistic things. My cut looks good straight, but will also accentuate my naturally curly hair. I can't stop looking at it & touching it. So soft, even after multiple processes. I called ahead for a walk in and I got Shelby as my hairstylist. I was a little stressed as it was a last minute type thing I decided but i was happy to find they do take walk ins! I love her attention to detail! I don't have a before picture but these are the after and I absolutely love it! I get non stop compliments everywhere I go. Overall, I thought going in it looked nice. My experience, though, left me a unhappy. I did not feel welcome, or like I was heard about what I wanted. I definately did not feel like I was welcome back. I really wanted a shorter cut, but didn't want to look like a boy with my very round face. I wasn't questioned about what i was looking for, and definately no booking for a follow up appointment. My stylist was talkative, but only about general topics. I really would have preferred that level of communication about my hair. The place was cute, but there was not much room to maneuver. I was so excited. I booked my appointment 2 weeks before. I put in the booksy app for Brenda that I was looking for rainbow colors in my hair. All over. The appointment was confirmed and she replied to me and confirmed the appointment. The appointment was for 1:30. Brenda didn't show up till after 2. At which point she called me over and asked what I wanted done. I told her and she asked what color, brown? I said rainbow colors. She said she doesn't do that. But she confirmed it in the app. So she clearly didn't read the app. She even took her phone out and showed me claiming she couldn't see what I put. But you could see my question there. That again, she had to confirm. All the while claiming she did indeed read it. It was insulting to me. I know she did not read what I wrote. And then she wanted me to wait so she could find someone else. I was getting my hair done for a memorial trip for my mom. Now I don't have the time to book another stylist. I regret ever looking up this place or calling them. It was so unprofessional. I will never call one of their salons again. And I will warn all my friends not to come here. This was my requested haircut, like a lob (long bob which I never said the word bob)/shag... (just showed the picture) and we discussed it's about an inch longer in the front than the back. And it's stacked in the back. Keep in mind my hair was 'to my waist' so I had PLENTY of hair to begin with. NO excuse for such a short zero layers bob. And once I showered and washed my hair next Morning, I have a huge section of thickness missing on one side! I was bawling! Michael is an artist! He took my wimpy, dried-out, lanky baby-fine mop and turned it into an edgy wavy layered bob, complete with highlights to bring out the layers. He's a lot of fun to talk to as well! The stylists at Medusa are independent contractors, so Michael's prices are competitive and fair, especially for the level of service you get. He also has his own Square credit card reader, so if the salon's payment system is down, he can still take credit cards. The only tiny issue I have with Medusa is parking. There's a small lot off to the side and back of the building, or there's street parking. The lot across the street is for the flower shop only, and they close at 5 so if you're parked there, you're basically locked in for the night. Other than that, I'll keep coming back!! read more

I had to get this haircut for a funeral and my normal salon was too booked. I got my hair cut in the summer and it was not what I wanted. I showed Emily some pictures of the type of bob I wanted. She asked one question and that was it she got to cutting. She had my back towards the mirror for most of the cut so I didn't get to see what was happening with it. She was quiet the entire time which was fine by me, I figured she was focusing. Honestly it was so bad. It was so uneven in so many places. And it took her so long to do it so I would imagine this was her best attempt. I wish she would've just told me she couldn't do a bob in the first place. I had to try to even it out with hair shears when I got home and I was disappointed for what I paid. The salon itself is cute but I don't recommend. read more

I decided to go to this salon to get a consultation done for a peekaboo lightning hairstyle. I showed Raquel a picture of the color that I wanted (platinum blonde), and she said that she would have no problems accomplishing that color; my hair is very dark, but I was quoted a reasonable price. I scheduled an appointment for the next day. I spent 7 1/2 hours in the chair during the lightning process. By the end of the service, my hair was only lightened a fraction of what I originally wanted. By that point I was tired, hungry, and just over the experience (she almost never spoke to me during the whole service). I get up to the counter to pay, and the end price is over $100 of what I was originally quoted. I wouldn't have minded the increase in price if the end result was what I originally wanted, but because I did not end up with what I was told, I was not happy with the price. I ended up paying it because I just wanted to go home as it was 30 minutes past closing time. The next day I look at my hair since at this point it is completely dry and see that there are still lots of yellow undertones in the blonde color. I called the salon and asked if I can get another toning done and schedule an appointment for that day. I go in and get the toning done, but there are still some slight yellow undertones to the blonde. I ask if my hair can be lightened anymore to get it to what I originally wanted and she says that I would have to get a bleach bath done in order for that to be accomplished. I'm quoted at least another $75 for the bleach bath, but decide against it because I've already spent so much on a hair color that I did not request. I was very excited to get my hair done here, since I have been wanting this color for a long time, but was very upset by the end of it. Only giving this place two stars because the hairstylist was nice, but was very disappointed in the outcome of service. read more

I have never liked short hair on me and Cindy is the only one who has ever cut my hair to my liking (I'm very picky) not mention, the Only to cut that much of my hair off. Highly recommend Brenda. She did my cut and style this afternoon and it turned out even better than I was expecting. She understood what I wanted, and even had helpful suggestions as a professionally trained cosmetologist. On top of that, she was a great conversationalist. I've been looking for a stylist in San Antonio, and will 100% be coming back to Brenda. The only reason I docked one star off is because I had originally booked with Amy one week in advance. She rescheduled twice, each only 30-60min before my actual appointment time. I WOULD STAY AWAY FROM SCHEDULING WITH AMY due to her severe lack of professionalism. Luckily, Brenda was able to fit me in later that day, since I was already waiting in the salon when Amy cancelled the second time. Had a very disappointing experience with Brenda on Friday. When I arrived, instead of greeting me and beginning my appointment, she spent the first few minutes talking over my head about makeup with another stylist. When she was done chatting, we discussed that I just wanted a trim, and she brought me over to wash my hair before cutting. Once I was back in the chair, she began trimming. The cut itself seemed to go fine. When it was time to style, I asked for a big, loose wave blowout. I pointed to a poster on their wall as an example, but I guess that confused Brenda, bc she told me "you need to make up your mind about what you want." I felt uncomfortable and unheard, but let her do her thing, just wanting to get out. I figured I'd restyle it at home if necessary. When I got home that night, I realized she had cut my hair unevenly -- the top layer was significantly shorter than the bottom layer! I had a blunt lob going in, no layers, so this looked really amateur and bad. My mom tried lifting the top layer to trim the bottom to match, twice, and we still can't get it right. I after two attempts, the top layer is STILL visibly shorter than the bottom layer. I have no idea what Brenda was going for here, or if she was just rushing and not paying attention, but my hair definitely did not look like this before the appt. I can't even go back to get it fixed, as the next day I was a bridesmaid in a wedding, and then the salon was closed before I had to leave town. So now I'm out $70 for a crap haircut that I'll need to pay at least another $70 to get fixed in LA (where I live). In all, Brenda made me feel small and uncomfortable during my appointment. And she messed up my hair. I would not go back or recommend this salon/stylist. What a waste of time and money. read more

What do you when you're unsure about your life and future direction? You go to the hair salon and cry to a stylist! And because of this, I give stylists the utmost respect because it must be a lot of us who are like this. I came here wanting to get a trim and "go darker", as vague as that is. I'm so sorry to my stylist (I'm terrible with names, but she had red hair at the time). She was so helpful in determining what exactly I wanted. We ended up going with darker roots with blonde ends and a bob shape cut. Her dye job made the hair seem much more natural, but the darkness on the roots was beautiful. It was a long process, but beautiful hair takes time, so I wasn't upset. I wouldn't schedule anything after your appointment to give your stylist plenty of time. The stylist and the front desk gal were super professional and helpful to my emotional messy self. Price was appropriate for the grade of work done. I felt super beautiful afterwards and will be returning soon :) read more

Having super curly, thick hair it's hard to find people who know how to cut my hair, let alone work with it. Let me start off by saying Brenda is a miracle worker! I had received a referral for her from a friend who has hair with a similar texture to mine. After my first visit with Brenda, I was sold. She is a very experienced stylist who knows her way around all types of hair, especially ethnic hair. She is very detailed and thorough when it comes to her work. She is very patient and takes time to ensure things are done correctly and to your liking. I can tell she is very passionate about her profession. I trust her 100% with my hair. I've been back several times and will continue to go to this salon for as long as she is there. I cannot rave about her enough. I was looking for a salon in San Antonio and being new to the city, I reached out to Yelp to help me. I was not disappointed!! After reviewing the comments and photos, I decided to go with Medusa. I called the salon and the receptionist answered quickly and was extremely efficient and personable. I was able to schedule a same day color and cut with James. I loved the whole experience. James is an artist. Carefully listening to me as well as asking all the right questions. The purple palace is filled with interesting decor and plays old school punk like Bauhaus, Siouxsie and the Banshees, and the Germs. Don't get me wrong, the are fully capable of going wild and expressive BUT.... James made me look professionally appropriate, elegant and fresh. Nice job. For sure I'll be back!! read more

(Update: 3rd appointment Oct 2015) ***See updated before/after pics*** Love that NICOLE is able to fit in my appointment even at the last minute via text. Told her I was bored of my hair and needed to polish it for work, so decided to cut straight across, choppy bangs with face framing pieces + take off the length and do blunt ends with minimal thinning but still layered for movement + tone and condition so it's not as orange and dry. Didn't even need to add more bleach/process it more to refresh it, so saved a bit of $$ there, which I appreciate :-) see the After photo! She definitely listened when I showed her pics of what I wanted and when asked shorter or choppier bangs. You can definitely see in the Before photo that even if I have very long and very thick hair, NICOLE did a great job on the seamless gradient of the balayage. Even when my hair was grown out for a few months, it didn't look like amateurish "dip dyed" ombré/"disconnected" color where it was obvious where my natural color ended and the lightened areas began. I think this is important to note because I'm really glad that Nicole knows that ombré/balayage is such a low maintenance hairstyle since your roots are supposed to show and blend in with the lightened areas, and is not a color block contrast (e.g. dark hair and dip dyed chunky blonde ends), which I've seen some professional stylists do (which is ok if that's what's you're going for, but that not the "ombré" gradient I want). Didn't mention this before, but I always appreciate the card swiping USB attachment they Nicole has on her phone so it's soo easy to pay, leave a tip, and get a text message receipt. At the end of my appointment, Nicole already had ideas for my next hair color, so I'm excited to see what can do next :-) thanks again, Nicole!! read more

I go to see Michael Gonzalez for my cut and color needs! I naturally have dirty blonde hair, but I had first gone red with another stylist. After wanting to change the shade of my red and being less than happy with my results, I first saw Michael in December 2014... And I haven't seen anyone else since! Although I haven't changed my color much in that time, he always gives me a beautiful, rich, deep red that my coworkers have described as "a nice merlot" that lasts forever. Michael often has other stylists at the salon asking him what formula he used for my hair! Red fades out notoriously quickly, and I take care of it on my own at home, but I'm able to go 6-8 weeks between visits. The faded color looks great on it own as well, although it is clearly more of a red/red than a wine/red. Mostly I'm forced to go back simply because my roots are showing, as opposed to being unhappy with the faded color! I did a major cut to a bob last month, and I couldn't have been happier. Michael loves his art -- I was texting him Pinterest photo inspirations the day before and he was soo excited when I showed up for my appointment! I'm OBSESSED with my haircut, it's everything I wanted it to be -- blunt, choppy, volume, edgy, yet simple. I still get compliments on my hair more than a month after making the chop. Michael's prices are fair; all the stylists own their own business so it isn't standardized throughout the salon. Parking can be a little tricky, oftentimes I've "illegally" parked at the flower shop across the street and walked over. There are usually refreshments available. The main salon is somewhat cramped -- if you show up super early and have to wait, you're pretty much limited to a cramped community table smack in the middle of the salon. read more
