You get what you pay for. They advertise $5 fares, I've yet to snag one that low. But even when I've paid $50 for a one way ticket, there's not a cheaper/easier option to get to certain local cities without renting a car. So this is a company I'm happy exists, but really, really temper your expectations. I've had trips that went seamlessly, and I've had buses that arrived 90 minutes late in the freezing cold. Lateness is forgivable, you can't always account for everything, but their customer service is horrendous. You're going to be lied to, hung up on, ignored, you're going to be told conflicting information, you're going to have to argue and fight for any kind of compensation - and if you do receive it it will be in the form of credits to use towards future Mega Bus trips. But you can get those credits. Keep calling, keep talking to as many people as you can. The calls are recorded, so if someone says something they do have to be held to it. While refunds aren't given for lateness, "compensation" is given depending on the amount of time the bus is late. No one will notify you if your bus is running late, you have to call and the people who work for this company are clearly miserable, from the ones answering the phones to the ones assisting you on the bus itself. At one point I was told my bus was in Canada - 3 hours away. It wasn't. People left the line because of that information, but we all exchanged numbers and I was able to stall to keep the bus there until they came back. The WiFi often doesn't work and the charging ports don't always take the newest cords or are broken. But the bathrooms are clean, the seats comfortable, the rest stops give you ample time to use the bathroom and grab a snack. read more

Megabus will never rise above three stars because they have such a half assed commitment to customer satisfaction. They are understaffed (some complain about the surly drivers, but the problem is that they are doing 2 or 3 peoples' job), the seats are really uncomfortable, there's no tray for your laptop, the wireless often fails, and they make you wait in really sketchy third worldly locations like 40th at 10th Ave in Manhatten, or the Racino in Saratoga. But Megabus will never fall below three stars because it's so much cheaper than the train. If you can make reservations far ahead you really can score $1 and $3 tickets, and even with short notice I just paid $15 for a same day NY-Albany ticket. One tip: if you aren't absolutely sure of your plans and you've missed the super cheap tickets, consider waiting till close to your travel date because the tickets are totally nonrefundable. That $15 same day ticket replaces another $15 ticket purchased 3 weeks ago that I was unable to use. Still, $30 (plus 50 cents per ticket service charge) beats the train any day. read more

Oh wow where do I start? I guess you get what you pay for. I'm on a bus right now as I write this review.. Ok, so, it's raining currently and about every 3-4 seats someone is being leaked on cause THERE ARE HOLES IN THE ROOF. They made us stand outside in the rain as the gentleman checked us in and it took FOREVER. I have a backpack and all of my clothing, shoes, laptop, backpack EVERYTHING is soaking wet. The first bus I took the seats were so thin you literally couldn't sit comfortably in the seat it arrived 30 min late anyway. Then on the way back 30 min late getting going (probably because of the year long check in to get onto the bus) now I need new shoes. I haven't heard back from Megabus I even messaged them on fb and nothing. This is a terrible company, I paid $40 round trip and both trips were a disaster. read more

It's a great bus. But they lose a star for not having a station. Most of the time, that's fine. Megabus doesn't feel nearly as sketchy as the Chinatown bus services. In fact it's very professional. I love that I can just wave my the confirmation on my smart-phone to the driver and get on board. What I don't love is the intermittent wi-fi. But that's fine provided you plan for it. Don't expect that you'll be able to access your GoogleDocs for the length of the drive. Still, they have plenty of power outlets, so you can arrive at your destination with a full charge on your laptop and phone. On my last trip back from NYC however, the location of the pickup spot was directly in the hot hot sun. There was no shade, and there was no relief. And those who wanted one of the coveted seats in the front row of the upper deck, or who wanted to be guaranteed to sit next to their travel companion bravely suffered through. I found a shady spot, and waited until the line snaked around and joined me in my patch of comfort around the corner. These have been the only problems. Generally, the bus has been clean, comfortable and safe. The other people on the bus have been largely pleasant and unobtrusive. Plus Megabus has been very reasonable, efficient, and timely way to get from Albany down to the city. I'm glad they service the area. read more

I couldn't submit this review without any star but they don't get any star for what they put me through. This is the worst bus service in the whole world. I booked a ticket from Washington, DC to NYC on 6/27/22. The bus was supposed to leave at 2:20pm but left at 3pm instead. Then on our way to NYC, at some part of NJ which is an hour away from NYC, the driver informed us that he's going to switch drivers. However, the other driver was no where to be found. This was at 6:50pm EST. I live in upstate NY so I had another trip from NYC to upstate NY at 8pm. At 7:50pm, there was still no bus driver and the other driver won't move the bus. I tried calling customer care but the service wasn't available. I ended up taking a lyft worth $68.99 to NYC and had to wait around till 12AM of 6/28/22 in order to get another bus going to upstate NY. If any staff at megabus is reading this, I need a total refund of my bus trip from DC to Washington, a refund of the lyft fare, a refund of my cancelled bus ticket (because the company didn't refund me) and a refund for the late bus trip. It's either the company compensate me or I hire a lawyer to take them down. No amount of words or money can compensate for the stress this bus company put me through because of their irresponsible services. MegaBus is a total waste of money. I would rather pay the additional 4 or 5 dollars per trip to get to and from my location knowing that I will receive my luggage and will have good customer service. I recently took a bus from Albany to Ridgewood, NJ and the bus driver took off at the Ridgewood stop before I had a chance to grab my luggage from under the bus. On top of that, I had to call them four times and fill out an online form in order for them to look for my luggage in their "lost and found" system. Their customer service has been incredibly unhelpful and is now asking me to pay for the luggage that they drove away with. This is the first, and only, company I have ever decided is never worth using. read more

Megabus gets the job done at a cheap price and that's why I continue to rely on them to get me between NYC and Albany. They aren't the cleanest or coziest and half the time their staff are miserable, but for the most part, you're paying for what you get. You can show your ticket from your smartphone, which is convenient. The wifi on the bus is extremely spotty and unreliable. You can store one bag below the bus cabin and most of the time, they load and unload it for you. Don't expect to store more than one bag, though. I've purchased day-of tickets from NYC to Alb at $40 RT. I've gotten tickets as low as $14 RT when I've had my act together to plan. The biggest downside is the trek to 34th and 11th Ave, but again, it's what you pay for for curbside service. read more

This is the most inconsiderate and untimely transportation method. You might as well spend the extra money and take Amtrak because you'll miss whatever you were hoping to attend if you rely on Megabus to get you there. If you are thinking of using this service to get to NYC....let me make a suggestion..DON'T! This was my 1st and last time using this service, actually I didnt use it since the Driver was incredibly rude, discourteous and unprofessional. I decided to give it a try and save a few bucks instead of riding the train on Amtrak. What a mistake!! I arrived with my family and we had 4 bags, three regular sized and one carry-on sized. I had read on the website that 1 carry-on per person was permitted. They do not very clearly specify or define what that size meant. So after waiting in the cold for the bus to arrive which was over 15 minutes late on New Years Day (no traffic, no bad weather), I was very surprised to be rudely told by the driver that I could not bring the bag on the bus. I could also not place it in the storage compartment. I asked what could we do and was informed that we could leave the bag in the parking lot! I understand that the Company may have a policy. We were new customers and didnt realize the size constraint. However we were not trying to bring on an additional full sized bag. The driver was so rude and obnoxious and only gave me the option of getting off with my wife and 9 year old daughter. The bus was only half full! Our ride had left and we were headed to the airport so leaving a bag in the parking lot was an absurd option. Real customer service would have 1. offered to try to put the small bag on after all the others had put theirs on or 2. Charged us an additional fee for the small bag. I already had paid extra for 3 reserved seats. But no this Driver was going to demonstrate to me who the Bosslady was! Calling customer service was also a complete waste of time. I thought maybe this was just a discourteous driver and the Company would at least refund my money since we never boarded the bus and had such a terrible customer experience. But no they stood by their no refund claim so I will be dealing with that separately. Be aware, I wish i had read some of these other reviews before booking! read more

Seamless, going from NYC to Albany on a Saturday afternoon. The trip was a little over 3 hours, as promised. The downside is that the wifi only actually worked for about 15 minutes, and the bathroom is basically a porter potty with no sink...but for the price I can not complain about these things. If I was traveling a further distance and had more money, I would probably take the train, but for what it is I felt it was a great deal. read more

Bad service. Actually the bus arrived about 2hours late than scheduled. The reason why is the driver took 30min break time at the rest area.

I took this bus I stead of the train, based on Megabus' claims of free wifi! Well let's just say that it was free. But air is free, and at least air works! This is the biggest false advertising claim I have ever encountered. I swear if us working folk, I.e. megabus' customer base, had any spare time, I could see a class action law suit in their future. Imagine I HAD to get some work done on the way back to the city, and my career was counting on it. What a shame MB. Now on another, more positive note, the employees have always been very accommodating, the drivers are ALWAYS on time, the buses are clean as are their bathrooms, and yes, their ticket prices can't be beat. God they came so close. I probably should have left a four star review but the Internet fiasco pissed me off so bad I just couldnt. Come on MB just get your I T guy to fix up the god damn broadband. Anyway, after being told the 6:00departure@Suny.albany was running late over the phone at 6:10pm (got there at 5:20pmBTW) so then later on a seperate call at 6:40pm a rep said the service was transferred to another company. And advised i call back n 10 mins. Doing as advised turned into a shit show when on the line w/ a male supervisor (that i'd fire if he had to report to me tbh)_ thus being told the megabus came already lol. But would assist me booking another ticket for tomorrow (yeah ok-guy) Summary: I'm on a trip back home now using wi.fi w/*another company and called mega bus customer service to request a refund. =Here we go again..*Transferred to Rep/supe named"verika"whom said..( BTW, they all tend2apologise for wait times no matter what ur inquiry is quite frequently also and say "let me look into the matter") but i digress, she repeats shuttle came at 6:01 So thats that: Dont expect good service, a refund, or anything else--well besides service-fees. I went to drop off my friend at the station listed on the bus ticket and waited and waited for the bus to come only to find out that the pickup is down the street. We called Megabus and they could not tell us why we did not see the bus even though we were at the station in front of a Megabus sign. But then we were told my a random person there that you had to go down the street. There was no indication of this on the ticket- just the name of the station. The person on the phone from Megabus had no clue where the stop was. If you miss the bus, there is no refund or credit- terrible business practices and horrendous customer service. I took my friend to the Greyhound Station and the ticket was $1 more than the Megabus one had been. Just take the Greyhound! :) read more

Every time I take this bus it's late. And I used to take it 2 times a month. At least one to three hours late. Drivers are rude and so is dispatch. Sent a letter about how displeased I was with the service after they were 3 hours late, driver was rude, and they gave no explanation. Their response was, "sorry." Flew in from Cali with 7 friends spent the night in Albany then took a megabus to NY NY . Cost was around 25 a person since we book the day before. No complaints the bus was clean and smooth and the driver wasn't a jerk about us being confused and touristy with questions. A+ read more

Just got off the phone with mega bus. After getting cut off three times it seems their driver forgot to pick up at Suny Albany. They have graciously agreed to get me on a bus 7 hours from now at no extra charge. They are considering this giving me a free ticket. This is the second time this has happened. I over looked this once, but leaving over 20 people stranded this second time is enough. At least with a conventional company you aren't left stranded outside in the cold. read more

I took a trip to NYC for a few days this past weekend. And I chose the Megabus because, as far as I know, its the cheapest transportation from Albany to NYC (roughly 20$ each way, but it can be much cheaper depending on what time you go). I found that the saying "you get what you pay for" does NOT apply to the Megabus. You get more. I was pleasantly suprised. On the trip down I had a very comfortable ride. Nice driver, and my fellow travelers were polite and respectful. Left on time, and arrived on time. The driver quickly checked my reservation #. On the way back, the bus left right on time. I showed the driver my handwritten res. #, and I don't think he even took a look at it before he let me on the bus. The reason I say you get more than you pay for is because I am used to taking buses from the Albany bus terminal which charges AT LEAST double what megabus does. And often times you have to deal with rude passengers, rude drivers, not as nice of buses...etc. Megabus is a very nice two level bus, FREE WIFI. and supposedly there are power outlets on megabus, BUT the outlets did not work for either part of my round trip. I think that is my only complaint. but of course that is not a huge deal. Based on this one and only round trip experience with megabus, I would definitely recommend it as THE cheapest and best means of transportation from Albany to NYC. read more

I've taken this bus four times round trip from Albany to NYC and here's the deal. Only take it down to NYC and take the train back from NYC. The return schedule is bad (no trains later than 6:30) and it was always late leaving Manhattan by at least an hour or more each time. The price vs comfort is a good compromise going down to NYC but Amtrak is far far better and worth the extra price on the ride back.. read more

I was traveling with a minor and needed to switch both seats and instead of the site telling me that I couldn't do it they just stole half of my money. When i called to try to find out what happened I was hung up on twice and had to pay 9 buck even though there was 27 extra cash. Overall, I will never ride this or give them any business. We took our first trip to New York City from Albany NY on Saturday, Feb. 25, 2012. We all gave it a thumbs up!! Traveling with 2 kids, the bus was great, they loved the upper deck for the ride. The bus was clean and the outlets and wi-fi worked great. Seats very comfortable. The driver and attendants were great, everyone got on the bus calmly and in a single line, not like the china bus. Never travel the china bus, bad choice. We arrived in New York city on time, the stop was by Macy's and a short walk to Time Square and the Rock. The new pick up was off the beaten path in Hell's Kitchen, we are glad it was still light out side having small kids. Still well marked for pick up and everyone in a line waiting. The bus arrived on time, got us all in the bus professionally, took care of our baggage for us. Then announced where the bus was traveling to to make sure everyone was on the right bus, thanked us and off we went. Arrived back in Albany on time. Our luggage was already unloaded by driver and waiting for us when we got off the bus. Would truly recommend anyone wanting to go into the City and on a budget, but still want to be treated nice and have a pleasant trip to try Megabus. This is the Worst Experience Ever! It got me to the point where I had to do an email for a complaint! I have taken MegaBus plenty of times and now today it was suddenly a problem. I purchased tickets for the 10:25am bus in Collins Circle SUNY Albany. I understand the policy is 2 bags per passenger, but today it was a problem. She was very disrespectful and wasn't doing her job. Let me start off with she approached myself and my boyfriend with the only attitude. She told us in the middle of the rain that "you are not allowed to get on the bus with more then 2 bags" and so I told her that "he came with 3 bags a book bag, a duffle bag, and another small bag and it wasn't a problem then so what's the problem now". I only had my 2 bags, (my book bag and my duffle bag).She was like "I don't care about what other drivers do this is my bus and my rules".(She said it very disrespectful). I then called Customer Service and they told me for his bag I would have to pay for 2 extra tickets. Which makes no sense if he was the one with only 1 extra bag.Then they both told me 2 different prices. The lady on customer service told me $60.00 and the driver told me $80.00. She than stated that her manger was the one that told her that I would have to purchase 2 extra tickets. What doesn't make sense is if its one extra bag why do they want me to pay for 2 tickets? I am very disappointed and annoyed. We then bus the bags on the bus and she said that we couldn't have our bags on the bus. My book bag had my $1500.00 computer in it if that was to get ruined I would've had her pay for it. I wasn't leaving it there I just need to put it down. I was not happy with the service today. I have never had this problem before. I want a complete refund for my money back I spent $34.00 for 2 tickets to New York,NY 7th Ave and 27th St that I never took. I look forward to speaking to a you and if not I will be looking to speak to a higher Supervisor. She didn't even put the bags on the bus, she made the customers put their bags on the bus themselves. I have never experienced this before, I have taken this bus plenty of times since I have been away at College. Every bus driver takes the bags and places them on the bus themselves. According to your Policy this is what it says "Offer to do this immediately the weight of a bag looks like it may be questioned. The weight limit is more for the Health and Safety of the loader than the need to keep weight on the bus down. Most drivers would have no problem with a passenger with a couple of reasonable sized cases so long as there was room in the hold - there usually is."She never lifted the bag to see if it was that heavy all of ours were/are really light. I purchased a ticket to go see my loved one who had a heart attack in NJ. I am in Albany NY going to NYC and catch path train to NJ. The driver who was scheduled to pick me up had car trouble so I missed the 1:30 bus, and I was not able to hav ethe ticket transfered to another day or even the later bus.Because I couldn't make a change 1 day before the scheduled date. That is ridiculous, people do have emergencies that keep them from making the scheduled and to be told that I would have to buy another ticket. I understand the tickets are cheap, but a policy like that is not worth it. Its not the company fault my transporter had car trouble, but neither was it mine. Things do happen thats life but to deal with a company that cannot make accomodations when life happens. I will never do it again. I will inform my family and friends. I'd rather go greyhound and leave the driving to them. It may cost more but there is some insurance, when life happens. read more

This is probably the worse company to deal with! They send an email that bus is about 60 minutes late and to have your phone nearby for any updates. We came 30 min later to the bus stop, i called and the operator told me bus is going to come in the next 15 minutes. 45 minutes later still no bus; I call back and the operator tells me that bus already left ... it came 20 minutes later that scheduled and left right away. I ask how come there were no updates via email/sms.. why did they tell me it was going to be coming soon... No answer. They tell me, not our problem, you HAVE TO BUY A NEW TICKET to get on the next bus!!!! They wouldn't even honor the ticket that was purchased for the "missed" bus. All they would say , "not our problem, i'm instructed to hang up the phone", and they did. In the past i've had minor issues with them - i.e. trying to find out the bus stop in NJ, and missing the bus because it was not clear where my bus was leaving from, and same thing - they would not do anything about it and just hung up the phone. UGH.... Use this only as a last resort!! read more
