We came to the location on a Sunday morning. There were three cop cars in the parking lot at various points. We entered the bottle return area to find it absolutely filthy, with empty carts everywhere and most machines nonfunctional. I attempted to use the red phone on the wall to call for help, but they refused to answer it. I attempted to call the store's phone number, and they would not answer. My wife went inside to the customer service desk, where she was told that no manager was available, and that no one would help us. I attempted to Facebook to get help from Meijer corporate, also with no success. They did Facebook me later with a fairly standard brushoff about addressing it with the team. I would avoid this location. Final thought: I really wanted Detroit to have a nice place for people to shop, and had high hopes that Meijer would be able to provide a great shopping experience. I stopped in today to shop for fruit. The certain fruit looked very bad so I selected pomegranate that was in the cup. (I should make my selections based off this because the fruit on display should all be fresh and readily available because this is the purpose of a grocery store) I checked the date. Went to meijer just shy of a month ago and purchased a $300 lg 4k blu-ray player that's wifi enabled. Within a month it stopped working and I went to return or exchange the player. Meijer refused to return or exchange it because it was an expensive them. I called corporate and the most they could do was make a complaint report about the store and manager. Dirty and nasty bathroom. Unorganized self check out operations and terrible customer service. Severely understaffed in the deli. They don't follow the number system and tried to go out of line when I wanted some chicken. The woman in the deli then explained "come on, what you want!?" before I can get my order in. I walked off. What a fantastic location! Lots of parking as well as a gas station. The bakery had a great selection of pastries, and the cream filled donut I had was to die for. Not to one specific meijer, but meijer in the metro Detroit area as a whole. I have been a loyal meijer shopper for decades, I have the meijer credit card, mperks, etc. The order free pick up option has been a huge benefit while I work 4 jobs trying to survive all of these rising prices. This weekend I discovered they are now charging 5 dollars on the app just to order a pick up. It's hard enough to get by in this economy that now any price increase, even a small one, can completely alter my budget planning. After the price increase on meijer pick up orders I have decided to switch all of my main grocery shopping to kroger. They have free pick up and on some weekends free delivery. Some prices are lower and I see myself saving a lot more money not using the meijer credit card as often. For anyone else noticing meijer price increases, kroger has been a great money saving option for the same and sometimes better quality products. read more

It's hard to believe that this store is so poorly run. I have given them far too many chances. I used to do the pick up option. You can count on them filling about 60% if you're lucky. Constantly out of basics like eggs, milk, etc without any substitutions. Often times you are charged for items that you don't receive. My last order they didn't even bother to fill and let me know after 26 hours that they canceled the order. Don't expect to get any help from customer service either. Very disappointing. read more

My elderly mother has lived in Detroit for some time now. She was very excited to hear news that Meijer would be opening near her home. When the store opened it was fantastic. However, now things have changed. They have poorly stocked and dirty shelves. This type of mess is not only an eyesore but it can lead to germs and possible illness. This Meijer location is closest to my home, which may explain why I've had so many poor experiences there. Let's start with the parking lot. There are often no spaces left that are actually for Meijer - there are usually some farther over, but with the amount of traffic, it's not the safest to park far and walk. Coming in the entrance, security is tighter than usual but seems to do some profiling. The floor plan makes it difficult to find items because the aisles are split (the store is smaller than most) without proper labeling. They also frequently don't have common products in stock. The worst part, though, is checkout. They have an insufficient number of cashiers, no no-item-limit self checkout, and an incredibly poorly designed 12-items-or-fewer self checkout. They essentially use a form-one-line system there, without actually having a spot for the line to go or a proper marker (so it just blocks access to the vegetables), and then assign a person (that could be operating a cash register) to monitor the line. I've openly heard the self-checkout monitors bad-mouthing customers within earshot of other customers, and they are often slow to respond to the frequent issues with the machines. Overall assessment? Go to a different Meijer (or different grocery altogether), or use Shipt from this location. There's no shortage of supermarkets in this area. read more

I've read some mixed reviews about this Meijer, so I thought I'd put in my two cents. I am so happy they built this Meijer so near to my house. I used to drive out to 13/JohnR whenever I wanted to grocery shop. Having a Meijer on 8 mile is so convenient. I feel like the set up of this store makes so much sense and everything is located in a good spot. Generally, I find the store to be very organized and cleaner than some of the Meijer stores in the suburbs. I did notice that sometimes stock isn't full, but every time I have asked an employee if they have a certain item, they go out of their way to search it out for me. I find all their employees to be friendly and helpful. They don't just point to where something is, they take you to find it. There are always Detroit police in the parking lot and security guards in the store. This is nice when I'm shopping by myself. It makes me feel safe. Their customer service counter is the best at any of the Meijer stores I've ever been to. They are very fast, and no one looks unhappy to be working (Which isn't always the case for the returns area at some places). This might be a weird thing to add, but there's only one entrance, and I like it because it's easier to remember where I parked. -- I AM a blonde, after all. I've had average to mediocre experience with curbside pick-up, but today my experience with phone customer service was so horrendous I will never shop here again. They refused to let me speak to a supervisor and insisted my only option for rotten and damaged produce was to take it back to the store - even though I explained I'm high-risk and do not go into stores, which is why I use curbside pick-up to begin with. Terrible experience!!! Staff was very rude and unprofessional. Was waiting at self check for an employee to scan my ID. Employee looked at me multiple times and was rude and unprofessional when I flagged her down and asked for help. This Meijer has only been open for a few years. Not long after it opened, the entry/exit doors were already "not functioning" and continue to have issues to this day. The bottle return does not recognize the beer bottles that they sell in the store, I even had a COKE bottle refused as unrecognizable. ??? I use the self-check out (always -- regardless of how many items I have) because when I have used their cashiers, it takes longer than forever. Time and time again, the receipt I receive is illegible (the right side with all the dollar totals is blank!) as the register receipt printer is broken?? or out of ink?? who knows but it does not print, making the receipt useless. (I keep track of ALL my purchases to calculate my spending and I also use an app called Receipt Hog, which records my purchases and gives me points based on photographs of my receipts.) I often spend upwards of $100 each shopping trip and that is a lot of points to lose cuz Meijer equipment is poorly. I have been asked by door staff to show my receipt, saying that I was not allowed to self-check out because I was over the allotted item count. I obliged cuz I wasn't thinking. Had I been thinking, I would have told him to call the police sitting in their car outside if he thinks I'm stealing, and kept right on walking. Also, the recent trip to get my water bottles filled, was enlightening; the water filter machine is EXPIRED! Someone had removed the paper which shows the date each time the filter is changed and that should be done every 6 months or so. Since there was no filter change information, I looked to the license which displayed that the entire machine is expired several months ago. Hey this is not some family owned Mom & Pop shop that I would cut some slack... this is a corporation and I expect some minimum standards!! Ugggg.... Western Market in Ferndale is fairly expensive, it has a 4/5 star rating on YELP and 4.6/5 on Google Reviews. I had a bad experience at this location a couple of months ago. An unfriendly cashier sent me to my email to contact the store immediately. Not because it was just that bad, but because I was tired of such experiences where I'm spending my money. I sent the email to the customer feedback and received a response from one of the store managers almost immediately by email and later by phone. I was pleased with the response and the plan to rectify the situation. Not firing anyone. That was never my intent. But the goal is to better train and monitor employees interactions with customers. Since expressing my concern, my next visits to the store have been much more pleasant. I feel like a hand in that. Just like I raised my voice when I wasn't happy, I have also expressed my satisfaction when I have been pleased. Keep up the good work. read more

It's not the worst Meijer I've been in, but certainly not the best. It's clean and organized well. And while this store is on the smaller side, I was pleasantly surprised by their natural/grass-fed/organic/gluten-free/etc. inventory. You'll pretty much only find the basics here--but it's not a bad place to get your pantry staples at a decent price. My only customer service complaints are that 1) they hardly had any registers open on a very busy Superbowl Sunday morning, and 2) my check-out experience was less than great. As I was paying for my groceries, the cashier realized that she forgot to ring something up, and asked me if I still wanted it because, if I did, she'd have to call a manager to come fix the transaction. I guess that would have been an inconvenience for her? It was just weird she even gave me that option, and doing so came off as lazy and unprofessional. This Meijer was surprisingly nice, well kept, with decent stock and service... For about one month that is-- as it quickly succumbed to inevitable ghetto fabulousness (well, maybe just straight up ghetto). The bottle return is a nightmare. Several brands of beer that are sold at the store are not coded in the machines, which has left me sitting there waiting for hand written vouchers, sometimes for 20-30 min at a time. That is if the machines are even working at all. This last visit (which prompted this review), I was met with vehement opposition, and spoke with 3 people, one of whom didn't believe that they even sold New Belgium beer. He left for 15 minutes, came back, ate his words and finally wrote me a slip. The cashiers are hit and miss on friendliness/competence, but the u-scan people are consistently craptastic. God forbid you have bottle slips, ID check, or any kind of issue.... You may as well set up camp, and settle in for a shopping opus of biblical proportions that will suck your soul dry. Expect sale items to be out of stock, and good god do not go there near closing time, unless you only want half of the items on your shopping list (or less). Christ on a cracker! I live 4 blocks north of 8 mile and would rather drive to the Madison Heights store in rush hour than frequent this hole. It takes a comparable amount of time, I actually attain ALL of the groceries I intend to purchase the first time through, and I don't have to deal with a gaggle of whack-ass employees. read more

This Meijer is the opposite of Batman. It's the worst Meijer I've ever been to and I'm not being hyperbolic. Let me take you through a typical visit. You walk toward the front automatic entrance doors and see that one of them is broken. Ok, fine, doors break. It happens. But these doors break all the time. I think I've only been here once when all the doors have worked. Anyway, you head to a working door and... have to get about an inch in front of it before the door actually slides open. So you basically haven't even entered the store yet and you're already forced to wait. Let's say you manage to get inside, grab a cart, and start some shopping. Huzzah for you! Let's head to the produce section. Wait... half the stuff you're planning to buy isn't there. It hasn't been stocked or restocked to keep up with demand. Perhaps a lack of personnel? (Keep this in mind for later.) Maybe they ran out? It happens, sure. But here, it always happens. You grab what you can while making a note to stop by another grocery store, and move on. Time to go pick up some hamburger or chicken or other meat. Nope. Same problem as the produce. Weekly specials and such are often just big empty shelves. You'll just have buy the more expensive stuff or plan to pick up what you wanted to buy at another grocery store too. I'd take you through the other sections of the store, but you get the idea. The things you're looking for often aren't there. You grab what little you can and make a mad dash for the checkout to get out of this place as fast as possible before it swallows your soul forever. Cue intense laughter at your expense. Guess what? If you planned on going through a normal checkout line, you quickly see they're all backed up. ALL of them. Remember that potential lack of personnel I mentioned earlier? Here's where it really becomes apparent. There's usually about three regular lanes open for the entire store, so they're almost always backed up into the aisles. Ridiculous. You look down at your cart and think, "Forget this. I've got fewer than 12 items. I'll go to the self checkout." You go and see a line there as well. Of course. You turn the corner and see the self checkout wait line extends all the way into the produce section. This is a regular occurrence. You look back at the regular checkouts and then again at the self checkout before deciding the latter is your best bet. Which it is. You wait your turn in line while the two employees (if you're lucky) running this circus of a checkout procedure direct traffic. All the while, you watch from the back of the line as absentminded people wander into the open self checkouts, somehow unaware of the roller coaster-like waiting line extending from the area. And the person/people they have trying to corral this whole mess often don't notice the cutters because they have enough on their plate dealing with people who can't seem to figure out how to work a self checkout, despite the technology being around for 10+ years. You wait the wait, finally get to the checkout, pay your money, and then rush out of there vowing to never go back again. That's what I've done anyway. I'd rather drive the extra distance to another grocery store than ever come back here. AVOID. read more

The notorious Detroit Meijer has arrived! It's very nice inside - as to be expected with any newly opened store. Compared to other Meijers, I find this one more spacious and spread out. It's set up different than other stores, in a way I'm not sure I like. Most Meijers are set up with food on one side, everything else on another. This has the food in the middle, the "everything else" stuff divided amongst the two surrounding sides. It looked like one side was clothing, baby items, electronics, toys etc and the other side was cookware, toiletries, paper products, and home goods - although i was mostly just grocery shopping so i didn't check it out that closely. Other than that...I dunno, it's basically just a Meijer. I don't know what else there is to say, or what else people expect! lol. I like the location it's in - giving boost to the city but also just up the street for all the Ferndale, Hazel Park, and surrounding residents to enjoy as well. And the whole shopping strip has some nice new additions as well - a Petsmart, Payless shoes, Marshalls, and other stores adding welcome commerce to the area. read more

Since the day this Meijer has opened it has constantly had issues. The lack of support and or care by its employees is quite clear. I really was excited that there'd be a Meijer near me, but it's easier for me to just drive further to a Kroger in Troy than to have to constantly wait in the long lines or deal with the commotion in this store. Also, don't worry about using the bottle return machines here because they're either full or out of order. When I tried speaking to a manager, he just said "yea we know." No one ever came out to try and fix them while we were there waiting. One other customer said he had been waiting over an hour for someone to empty the cart. I understand it's a messy job but I feel like there should be someone In that entire store capable of working the bottle return area. read more

My partner was standing in line to use self-checkout on November 12, around 5:00. The woman directing traffic told the person standing behind my partner to go. She did this a second time. My partner then went to the next open register/station, seeing what was happening to her. The woman directing traffic walked over to her co-worker and bragged about making my partner wait. Your employees are petty, unprofessional children who get off on treating those that don't look like them, poorly. I've loved all other Meijer locations we've shopped at, but definitely won't be returning here to shop. Prior to this trip, we tried returning a Halloween decoration that didn't work. Finally, an affordable (not Whole Foods) grocery store in Detroit. There are plenty of parking spaces. The parking lot and building is secure with cameras and police officers planted throughout. The store is spacious with product neatly displayed. Customer service is where Meijer needs to FOCUS its efforts. The employees are slow and have rotten attitudes, which will be the demise of this store. Management must change it's culture with the employees including firing those who refuse to change. These 3 other areas also need improvement: 1. Delicatessen and bakery need friendly, quick and efficient employees 2. Shelves must always be stocked 3. Management must micromanage the checkout area and ensure the cashiers cash out customers QUICKLY and friendly! read more
