Came here for brunch. Service was just ok. Ordered the chorizo benny. The chorizo was very good but otherwise it was nothing special. My friend ordered the large breakfast and it was again ok, but just like something you can order at a dennys. There was nothing terribly wrong with Melissa's. Melissa's "Missteaks" is aptly named for sure. Maybe the upstairs is good and a locals hangout, but the restaurant downstairs is average at best, and probably a little worse than that. We had a nice enough waiter that was pretty attentive, but the food was not good. The NY Strip I ordered was the worst I've had in many, many years. It wasn't terrible, but it was a big disappointment when we were looking for a good steakhouse. So if you're looking for an excellent cut of meat in a modern atmosphere, look elsewhere. I was very pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food at Melissa's, especially for the price point and being in Banff. I had a half portion of salmon eggs benedict, which came with a side of hashbrowns for $8.95. It was just the right amount of food for me. I was expecting it to be pretty average, redeemed by the flavour of the smoked salmon, but it was really very good. Friends ordered a side of fruit, which included blueberries, strawberries and blackberries, not a standard mix of rock-hard-melons, even more impressive considering the time of year. Melissa's serves breakfast until late in the day (all through lunch), which makes it a stand out in Banff, as most restaurants stop serving breakfast at 11am. It is quite a busy place on a Sunday morning for brunch, so call ahead to get your name on the list. read more

Family of four looking for a good breakfast. We found it! My eggs Benny with smoked salmon was cooked perfectly and nicely seasoned. Pancakes were so big we should have just ordered 1 each. Bacon says thicker sliced but it was the regular cut which is preferred by the kids. Service is top notch. It's nice that the restaurant is large enough to handle the breakfast rush at 10 am on a Saturday. Other restaurants on the Main Street are so tiny you can expect a long line even in May. No thanks. This place was really great! Like many reviewers have commented before, the sides are okay but the steaks are fantastic! I got the prime rib and it was cooked perfectly and was well seasoned. So nothing about this place was awful, for sure nothing was great. My husband & I ordered the hot turkey sandwich. There wasn't enough gravy so I asked for a side, & got brown gravy, not turkey. It came with no cranberry sauce & no stuffing. My husband ordered the parsnip/pear soup. It was not at all good or hot. My salad was alright but the dressing choices were really odd in a bad way. Service was below mediocre. I wish we would have read reviews prior because there are so many other options in this cute town. In addition to this below average meal, it was $40 bucks. Make no mistake that Melissa's Misteak is a great place for both lunch and dinner. We went for an early dinner (as my daughter is young) and we were seated right away with a great high chair for my little one. The menu provides a lot of options so if you are not a steak lover there is so much more to choose from. However we came for steak and were not disappointed. The waiter was friendly and knowledgable, and showed us a display of the cut of steaks we could choose from. I had the 8oz Filet Mignon and hubby had the Ribeye. I ordered the jumbo shrimp and mushrooms to accompany my meal as well. Everything was cooked to perfection! Dessert was their Brownie dessert (which you should share) but it's made in-house and so delish! All in all a great place to eat a great meal! read more

For lunch, I ordered an open turkey sandwich. It was very good. The turkey was sliced into thin strips and placed on top of a slice of thick white bread. The turkey gravy was creamy and seasoned well. My waitstaff was polite and efficient. The restaurant is casual. It is located near a large motor lodge. So, it probably attracts a lot of tourists who want a casual (but tasty) meal in downtown Banff. I would be willing to return to Melissa's in the future to try some other selections from its menu. More like Meh-lissa's. I'm sorry to say that Yelp failed us here. Based on an overall four star rating and a number of raves, we decided to make this our first breakfast stop. And at the risk of sounding overly picky, we had a number of issues with our breakfast experience: 1) While our server asked if I wanted my eggs poached soft, medium, or hard, and I ordered them soft, they were served to me hard. As I was in somewhat of a rush, I didn't want to send them back. 2) The eggs were clearly poached in one of those egg poaching molds that make poached eggs look unappetizing. 3) The tap water tasted chlorinated. At first, I attributed this to Banff itself, but after tasting tap water at a number of other restaurants in town, I should attribute this to Melissa's. 4) I ordered Corned Beef hash. Not only did I not have egg yolks to drizzle throughout the hash, but the hash itself was dry and crumbly. 5) Sarah ordered hash browns, which our server forgot to serve. We then reminded her and promptly received the hash browns. And we got them, but they were shredded thin and a bit too dry tasting. The restaurant claims that the hash browns are fresh, but they taste worse than your average frozen hash browns. 6) Sarah ordered an omelette, which thankfully came with real cheddar cheese, but came out a bit too dry and flat for our tastes. 7) I went straight to the bathroom about 5 minutes after I finished eating - not usually a good sign. Essentially, I'd choose to eat at Ricky's over here. And I don't like Ricky's very much. The only good thing is that we received our food in a relatively quick amount of time. read more

We were a group of 11, and they seated us within minutes. Server was very friendly. Food was terrific, omelet was good, the swiss apple pancake and belgian waffle were awesome. Great place for breaskfast, price was a little high but I guess normal for this area. Warning: long rant Came in on a Tuesday evening as a party of 4. My only takeaway from trying the food here is that I never have to come back. Had a 6 oz sirloin (medium) and salmon fillet with caesar and rice as part of their pick any 2 combination. Steak was overcooked, and a stalk (out of 3 total) of broccoli looked like it would be lucky to make the cut at Panda Express's closing garbage can. Had a Coke w/o ice which was almost lukewarm, but that's pretty much to be expected I guess. Finished the rest of the meal which was not bad at all, then grabbed our server's attention to tell her about the broccoli and steak, to which she replied with "why didn't you tell me when I came to ask how the food was?", to which I explained that I didn't even have the cynicism to cut the steak in half by the time she asked about it, not including that the food hadn't been on the table 2 minutes when she came over, that she did not visit our table after that until I grabbed her attention and had finished everything else, or that my aunt's prime rib was also overcooked. I acknowledged (and apologized) that it was somewhat my fault but I suggested we get a free dessert as a new steak was going to be more expensive anyways. She goes to talk to her manager and comes back saying there's nothing they can do and if I had told her sooner they could've redid my steak. In as apologetic and passive tone as possible I explain that I don't want to tip her less (tipped 15%) because it's not her fault, and I also don't want to write a bad review, but here I am! Oh Richard, how you so wonderfully bottle up your anger only to subsequently release it all onto your keyboard. An open letter to the manager at Melissa's: Dear manager at Melissa's on July 29th's dinner service, I understand that in a tourist town like Banff, restaurants tend to not give a sh- about anybody other than their regular customers. If that is the image you want to give, then A+, gold f-ing star. I passed the wonderful Maple Leaf just to try you guys out, and I regret that decision. The salmon was fine, actually, quite good. I should have told your server earlier about the overcooked steak and that is partially my fault, but the bottom line is your kitchen staff let out a so-called medium sirloin that was closer to well done than medium well, as well as a broccoli that shouldn't have even been considered for serving. I apologize if regulars at your restaurant are expected to cut their steaks in half immediately to check whether or not they're cooked properly. I also apologize if you don't intend on people actually fully tasting your steaks which would explain why you made the mistake of overcooking a medium steak and not mitigating that mistake at all. I suggested a sample of dessert to compensate, which I assume your establishment also prides itself on (or not), but my seemingly completely reasonable offer was stonewalled by you. Now I'm here to tell you that if you overcook enough steaks and serve enough leftover buffet vegetables, sooner or later your customers will just say screw it and go to the Old Spaghetti Factory, then spend the savings on a t-shirt from a Japanese gift shop on Banff Ave, which I fully recommend. Table for two please...15-20min, sure no problem. 2minutes later another customer comes in, how long for two, oh not long at all. 2minute after that they seat them prior to us. So we asked the question of why weren't served first, "they were on above you", sure the h**l wasn't, we were standing right there. Pretty awesome to lie to cover your mistakes. Then the manager or owner or whoever the hell it was day under her breath but loud enough to hear "they should of shown up sooner" in a very condescending tone, when we asked, after being delayed already and realizing it was getting close to end of the breakfast hour, if it would be possible to get breakfast still. Well you moron, if you seated us in order we wouldn't of had an issue!!! After reading the hit and miss reviews of this place I thought we'd give them the benefit of the doubt, well if your looking go with the doubt side on this. For me saying Melissa's is one of the best places to eat in Banff is like saying this was a great protology exam. This is an expensive resort town. It had expensive food, lodging, and all other resort feels to it. $10-18.00CDN for $3.99-$10.00 US food does not scream a good deal for me. I would say the pancakes were great - the touted as great hash browns were hash blondes and cold - the eggs just fine, the coffee tepid and the service lacking. This review is LONG overdue. I have breakfast at Melissa's every time I'm in Banff, it's a tradition I have introduced many people to. It's always packed but the food is amazing and the service is always friendly and efficient. Portions are huge, reasonably priced (especially for Banff) and oh so yummy. I usually get the eggs Benedict but this week I ate there 2 days in a row and decided to try the omelet which was delish, cheesy and wonderful.
