For the area I give it 5 stars doc is doing one heck of a job trying to get this course back to what it should be. There's still some work to be done on the greens but they are better than they have been in a long time. It's nice to see everyone coming out please be considerate. If I could give less than 1 star I would. Way over priced for such a crappy course. They don't honor military or seniors, they make up a new price what seems daily. One other reviewer here says they paid $31 for the nine hole, we were there last week and paid $32. We can go to Chesapeake Hills in Lusby and play a real 18 hole course for $37. I would be happy to pay $31 or $32 if the course were properly maintained, the greens suck. If Doc had any sense he would cut the price in half until the course is fixed as it should be otherwise sell it to someone who will. It has a lot of potential. read more

For being so far out in Calvert County, I was happy to just have a golf course in my town. The course is a bit rough but for $31 to golf a 9 hole and $10 for par 3, it's appropriate. The place truly is no frill and there's also a driving range and I see a mini golf. Very happy that this place is here., read more

Wanted to work on my wedges a little bit this morning so gave the 3-par a try. Not sure that it was worth the $10 I was charged, as there were no real tee boxes (or anywhere to create a decent lie) and "greens" were universally horrendous (requiring unrealistic "smack it and hope" conditions); see two pics. This is a shame because it is an interesting layout for working on 65-100 yd shots. Checked my golf log when I got home and saw that I'd made "poor greens" comments the last couple of years I'd given them a try. Well now I won't return for the 3-par unless they make significant improvements. Peeked at range: mats were beat up with poor tees, but range itself looked okay. Did not try or observe the par-35 course, but was pleased to see it was getting some play based on other patrons heading out to it from range. Will try to get back there sometime as it is a fun layout other than holes 6 & 7 being out of character and unusually challenging. (Really want to support this place and see them succeed, as one of only two golf options in Calvert County.) Finally, the newly installed putt-putt course looked fun, and I hope to try it sometime soon also. read more

Very nice course. It's under new management (a fellow named George) and it shows. I walked the course, and I met him, again, after I'd played a few holes. He gave me a couple of useful tips on how to make my approaches on the next couple of holes. Really nice guy, and seemed to take a real interest in proving a good experience for a fairly inexperienced golfer. Also had one of the best driving ranges I've been to, and very affordable. Will be coming back here when back in DC area. Highly recommended. read more

I had heard bad things about this course but it wasn't as bad as the rumors. It is generally ok but not great. I had a good time playing and it is not that difficult for a beginner like myself. The range is really good. read more

I am local to this golf coarse and the true statement is, the course is a bit rough but improving. You MUST hit the fairway or you will lose balls in the open. The ground off the fairway is uneven leaving small voids and the grass is high enough to hide the darn thing. If you are not looking straight down on the ball you will lose it. It turns into a costly course to play. The sand traps are NOT sand traps. there are weeds growing in the entire thing and a mound of sand in one area. it appears they intended to make sand traps but decided to go grab a beer instead. There is no twilight discounts and they do not accept 18Birdies app discounts. 9 holes with a cart is 25 during the week but I can play a really good 18 hole course, booked on 18Birdies, with a cart at some other local courses for 20 if I go out at 4. That is my normal time I go out after work. $20 for 18 on a really nice course vs $25 for 9 on a course that needs allot of work??? Doc is a great guy and I hope they do well, but they need better grooming and should put the money into the course instead of a miniature golf? For the record they are improving and I along with a couple of my friends are willing to help out the course and do some work in the sand traps and cut grass for some free rounds?? This course is in fantastic shape. It's way better than before. It's under new management, and it shows. It has a 9 hole regulation course. There is also a Par 3 (9 holes). The driving range is the best in the area. The greens are fast and in excellent shape. Tuesdays are half price for ladies. Love this course and the management. read more

Donald W. must be smokin crack. This is a quiet, friendly place...the new owner George is as friendly as can be. It's a great place to work on your game with some open fairways and some tight ones too. It has a nice practice area for woods and irons and a 9 hole par three for beginners & family. BRAND new golf carts and some rental pull carts. Even a beer cart on weekends. Absolutely the BEST unknown place around. Wish all my rounds could be as pleseant as those at Mellowmar!!!! read more

New management has worked hard to get this course in good shape. The greens are soft and roll true. The fairways when dry give you an extra twenty yards. Holes 6 and 7 can be very difficult if you don't choose the right club. The driving range helps get the kinks out before playing and has many targets to dial in those irons. I was informed that if I wanted to walk then I can't use my friends cart for my clubs, maybe an "Avid Golfer" would know that. read more

Not a bad little 9 hole course. I played for he first time in over a year here. 15 dollars to walk, 23 with a cart. You can't beat it. The course is wide open, the greens are soft and fairly flat. A good place to either learn or get back into the game. read more

Update 7/22/17: Since George left, the place has really gone down hill. The driving range is unkempt with horrible range balls (cracked/dimples worn/ancient), the greens are nearly unplayable, and the fairways and rough are shaggy. 8/7/2015: This is my forth summer playing and practicing at Mellomar. It is also my forth summer playing golf period. At the behest of a former boss, I started playing golf so I could participate in post staff meeting outings. I have been addicted ever since. In that time, I have played almost every public course within 50 miles of Mellomar and Mellomar unequivocally been the most welcoming and friendly place to play and for beginners, to learn the game. You can't beat the prices either. While Mellomar always has been and continues to be a friendly and welcoming environment for all levels of golfers, the new management team, led by a guy named George, has taken the quality of the courses and practice facility to a whole new level. If you haven't been to Mellomar in a while, give it a try. I promise you won't be disappointed. The Practice Facility: I challenge anyone to find a better driving range anywhere in southern Maryland. Mellomar has new mats, fresh balls, and accurate yardage markers. If you don't like to hit off mats, there is a turf option which has enough square footage to ensure you always have fresh turf to hit from. If you are a grinder or a range-rat like me and need a discount, Mellomar offers bulk discount cards at a very reasonable rate. The Par 3 Course: You can tell this little course wasn't just shoe-horned into extra space. The layout is fun and actually takes advantage of some of the natural elevation change and undulations. The most important aspect though are the immaculate putting greens. The 9-Hole Course: Again, the greens are very good. They are the best greens in Southern Maryland. They aren't quite as fast some of the other courses but they role true and are very, very well maintained. If you leave yourself a birdie putt, the conditions of the greens will not be an obstacle. Put it on the proper line and with the right speed and the greens play true, period. The first 4 holes are pretty wide-open which I like because it helps to get you settled into your round by not killing you with lost balls and penalty strokes. You still have to hit quality shots if you want to challenge par, but there is plenty of room for error and resulting improvisation. The back half of the course gets a little more challenging. Like any good course, it's tough on you for big mistakes, but... not as much as it used to be. The new grounds crew has done a great job of opening up the fairways, keeping the rough in-check, and they also trim undergrowth where there are trees. read more

The new management at Mellomar has made great strides in course conditions and overall playability. As other posters have stated, these are great greens, that roll very true. The course has maintained it's overall relaxed charm while still providing great value. The Par 3 course is a true challenge and a great way to introduce beginners to the game, or to practice on the short game skills. The regulation 9 does not offer many chances for errors on holes 6-9, especially from the back tees. The introduction of clinics and instruction by a great young instructor is enhancing the options here also. The management and the staff are attempting to enhance the experience for everyone at the course and several new policies are in effect. For the comment from the "Avid Golfer" regarding the manager following his group around; what you did by placing your push cart and clubs into a riding cart was not only poor golf etiquette, it is also Larceny. You used services of the facility which you didn't pay for. Trying to pass the reaction of management after you basically stole from them as couched racism is cowardly and pathetic. Did you even offer to pay the cart fee? Any "Avid Golfer" would understand that would be the correct thing to do. read more

I have been going to Mellomar on a regular basis ever since George took over. It used to be over grown but now it is in great shape. It is a great training facility, if you want to work on just the irons there is a par three and if it is the long game there is a nice regulation course and a nice driving range as well. They now have mats and range balls. read more
