I love the Richmond location so I was excited to give other locations of Mellow Mushroom a try. Unfortunately, my favorite items on the menu simply weren't as good as they are in Richmond. First of all, this is a chain?!? So un-chainlike, which is amazing! Now I have to confess, after enjoying a wine tour the previous day I was looking for something to fill my tummy, but what that was, I can't recall. It looked like there was a nice beer list that I couldn't stomach viewing, and an extensive menu of salads, subs, pizza and calzones. The better half and I decided to split a medium size pizza (and had leftovers). Per the servers recommendation when we were having trouble narrowing down a choice, we ordered half and half of 2 different flavors. I assumed that they were going to charge us for the more expensive pie, but it was actually charged as half of each flavor. I wish I could tell you what I ordered, but it was delicious! My daughter and I are vegetarian and always looking for great vegetarian options at restaurants. Mellow Mushroom has a lot of veggie options on the menu. We had a Greek salad and the mega-veggie pizza. Both were very good. My sons had a pepperoni pizza which they really liked. The service was excellent. We went at lunch on a Friday. YUMMMM. Even though my stomach tank hadn't even hit half-empty, I dug into this pizza like nobody's business. We ordered split pizzas: one with Kosmic Karma and Thai Dye, another with Mellowterranean and Philosopher's Pie. You can have split pies, except those you choose should have the same base. Hence our choice of mellow and philo together. Kosmic and Thai had different bases, so we opted for the red base. Now for the taste: First and foremost is the crust. Moist and chewy on the inside, crusty and salty on the outside (due to the sprinkled parmesan). The dough also had a hint of sweetness that meshed really well with the salty parmesan....oh how I love my carbs. Mellow and Philo were both oil/garlic bases...and perhaps the reason why I wasn't overtly gushing my admiration. I would have to say though that Mellow was better than Philo due to the refreshing tzatziki sauce that came along with it. Personal favorites were the Kosmic and Thai. Kosmic was amazing with the red base and pesto swirl; the Thai was sweet with a hint of spice and curry. To top it all off.....this place had sriracha sauce. Can't get any better. This is the second Mellow Mushroom location i've visited and it was just as good as the first. The Pizza is really good. I had the Holy Shiitake Pie which had a few types of mushrooms, olive oil, garlic, caramelized onions, two types of cheese and black truffle oil. The ingredients were well balanced. As far as most things go, this is just a standard Mellow Mushroom: great pizza, great atmosphere, and solid service, but this place gets its fifth star for the bouncers. They are simply phenomenal. This is one of the most exciting (and vegetarian friendly) pizza menus I've seen, with an equally exciting beer menu! This pizza is cheesier and more bready on average than the thinner crusted, more-veggies-than-cheese/crust type of pizza I usually like, but I still enjoy it without feeling disgusting when I'm done. The place does get packed, and a little fratty, on weekend nights, but if you time it such that you and your group get there, and get a pitcher (or two or three) before having to battle the crowds, you're bound to have a good time and some quality pizza. This place is fantastic! It's definitely a student hangout, but the great food and beer selection more than makes up for that. The service was friendly and prompt, and we came at an off-peak time so it wasn't too loud or busy. I found this place when I was driving past Charlottesville with a group of 3 others and we were looking on Yelp for somewhere inexpensive and tasty that would please vegetarians and meat eaters alike. The veggies each ordered a sandwich (the Portobello & Cheese and the Righteous Portobello Reuben), and the meat eaters split a Buffalo Chicken pizza. Everyone loved their food, and even though we intended to get a box for leftovers, we ended up eating everything! The good selection of craft and local beers was an unexpected treat to find in a place like this. If I lived closer, I'd be in here all the time for a seasonal draft beer and a sandwich. Very good place to eat a variety of subs and pizzas. Their menu is very varied and offers the classics while also having their own unique combos of pizzas and subs. Things to keep in mind for Mellow are their Beer Club and Tuesday Pint Night special with $2 pints! Mellow serves a HUGE variety of beers with their beer selection rotating every week or so, both local and from other brewing companies, so their Beer club is a good thing to jump on if you're into trying out beers. You can think of it like gaining xp whenever you get your Beer Club card punched when trying out new beers! And $2 Pint Nights on Tuesdays are just a steal, through and through. Starts at 8pm and fills up FAST, so don't be surprised if you find yourself waiting in line if you get there around 9 or 10. Some people get there to eat dinner at 7 and then already have a table when Pint Night starts, or I've found that the crowd dies down around 11pm. read more

I miss being in Charlottesville solely for Mellow's buffalo chicken pizza with a ranch swirl. SO INCREDIBLY GOOD. Basically, the pizza here is awesome -- I haven't had a single flavor I haven't liked and love that you can get half and half of two different types of pizza on one pie, so long as the sauce base is the same! The only thing I've had here besides pizza was the bruschetta, which was also good (and free because I signed up to be a member online!). I love pizza. But Mellow Mushroom's has to be my favorite. They never disappoint! Their crust and dough are the best in the game. They are the perfect fluffy texture and I could honestly just eat the crust by itself. Even after eating the big, filling slices I always want to eat all of the crust. The topping and flavor combos are also awesome. Today we got 3 pies: Buffalo Chicken, Philosopher's Pie, and Thai Dye. The buffalo chicken one was to my surprise amazing. I wasn't doubting Mellow's pizza-crafting skills, but I usually do not like any buffalo chicken items. This one was different. The chicken was tender and there wasn't a weird hot sauce taste. It was mixed perfectly with the ranch and bacon to create a perfect taste. The Philosopher's Pie was also good, but the only topping I personally am crazy about is the portobello mushrooms. I didn't get to try the Thai Dye one because I was too full from the two slices!! But I did try a couple pieces of the cucumber topping and even that was delicious. Awesome pizza. It's in the name of the restaurant -- so it should be good. Other restaurants have been know to voilate this rule. Anyway, the crust is thin but good and parmeasean is sprinkled around the edges. The House Special Pizza comes with a ton of meat and veggies -- ham pepperoni, ground beef [not bad, really], onions, peppers, olives, mushrooms --- I'm probably forgetting some. The calzones are HUGE. I'm not sure how one person is supposed to eat it. I usually get mine with spinach. It always has fresh green leaves. The tomato sauce is pretty standard though. I wish it was hotter sometimes. One of the appetizers could definitely be a dessert -- Honey Pretzels. I highly recommend these, but get an order of 3 (not 6). Each one is gigantic, baked fresh, piping hot, and covered in honey, cinnamon, and sugar. The number of TVs in the bar and the restaurant also means The Game(whichever one you want) is probably on. Visit the one in Athens, GA too. That was the first Mellow Mushroom I ever went to. It's a bit smaller than the Charlottesville version, but those pretzels are still there. It's different and their toppings are original: avocado, bbq chicken, tofu, broccoli, entire strips of bacon, etc. They deliver to a certain proximity which is nice if you live close to the Corner. What I like most about Mellow, and what earns them the full 5 stars, is their LUNCH special! For under $6.00 you can get a (very generous) slice of pizza with 2 toppings, a salad, and a soda! Went for Wednesday night trivia, split the Thai Dye pizza, which was super unique and tasty. Good price for a pitcher of Allagash White too. However, that good price from the menu ended up being rung in $2 more on the final receipt. The music in between the trivia questions was also way too loud to begin to have a conversation, let alone hear yourself think. And, the waitress ended up bringing an entire bill to our table of ~10 with everyone on it, with a note that said "indicate how you want to split it." After going up to ask her what that meant, she had us write the last 4 of our credit cards on the dishes we had, and turn them all in. That got to be pretty complicated with some paying cash, etc., and it wasn't worth it at the end to talk to her about the extra $2 on the beer price. I know it can be a big pain splitting checks of a large group, but this seemed like a pretty poor system. This pizza is easily the best in Charlottesville. It's a particular type of pizza, so if you are looking for thin crust, you'll be out of luck. The traditional pizzas (pepperoni, sausage, etc) are OK, but the real stars are their specials, like the Philosopher's Pie (artichoke, mushrooms, onions, and more). Their beer selection is really great, too. Maybe you should expect this from a pizzeria in a college town, but not every place has nearly this array. The Husband and I ended up here after attending the Monticello Wine Festival and were starving. Basically, we looked up pizza on the GPS and it led us here. Both of us have been to other Mellow Mushroom locations and this one was pretty standard as far as service and food. We were there around 10:00 on a Saturday night. We expected a young crowd and that is what we got. It wasn't overly loud - meaning we could actually hear each other - and we got seated right away. Our waitress was friendly and our food came pretty quickly. We had the garlic bread appetizer and it was delicious. I mean, how can you go wrong with carbs and garlic? The pizza was good - we got a half and half - and my half was just cheese. Overall, we had a good experience and for how inexpensive the bill was, well, we'd drive down to Charlottesville every Saturday night just to save $40! read more

I can imagine that this is probably the best pizza in Charlottesville. It's pretty good, after all, and has a lot of different options than your regular old pizza place. And if I hadn't been to a lot of really amazing pizza places lately, I'd probably rate it higher. I got the pretzels as an appetizer (honey and cinnamon is quite good) and then split a Kosmic Karma (with spinach, feta, tomato, and pesto) and it was quite good. Ate at the one in Greenville ,SC last month while traveling for work and tried the Caesar Salad pizza and claimed it as the greatest pizza ever. So I wasn't about to try anything else this time around. However the wife and kids were with me this time and the kids got the Hawaiian which was a good pizza considering it was red sauce. My wife got the Mega Veggie and she absolutely loved it. I however did stick to what I knew about MM and got the above mentioned Caesar. Hope to try more the next time I'm through the area of a MM. They are like my parents version of a Cracker Barrel....growing up they would schedule trips around CB locations. Oh the joy of growing up in WV before CBs took over our state. Only complaint. Not bad. Not amazing, but not bad. I had the I wasn't really a fan of the gourmet pizzas. They either featured toppings I didn't care for, bases that I didn't like (garlic base or white or pesto just aren't my thing, ymmv) Crazy, right? Well, whatever. Luckily, you can build your own pizza but that comes at a higher price once you factor in all your additional toppings. We ended up with the Kosmic Karma which was decent. A little heavy on the pesto and the tomatoes made the pie a bit too watery. Not enough cheese. Also we had some BBQ Wings. They were ok. You could tell that the wings were simply drizzled and tossed with BBQ sauce, there's not saturation of the chicken here. The celery was fresh and crisp though and the ranch on the side was nice and cold and very fresh tasting. Our waters were fine, mine came with less ice and was lukewarm when my partners' was still icy cold by the end of the meal. Our waitress was cute, no doubt, and she was rather attentive and very nice. I liked her and she got a good tip :) Overall, I like mellow mushroom. It's certainly not the best pie I've ever had, but it did the trick and has a nice, kitschy atmosphere that sets it apart. The manager invited us back after our sour review from our first visit, and I must say it's been interesting. The little change of having a waitress do side work at the bar lead to faster service. The reason they get 4 out of 5 stars, is because if you are going to have an amazing store with amazing pizza, and okay service, please dust your arts, I don't want to think about the dust from various places in your establishment knocking down on to my food and this includes in the kitchen. The flavor was delicious, the beer was cold, and the waitress was over attentive but she probably needed to be to stay on top of her service.
