We ordered 4 pizzas from this location and we're told that they would be ready in 30 minutes. We arrived 40 minutes after ordering and we're told the order was almost ready. After waiting for an additional 20 minutes, we checked on the status of our order and we're told that the restaurant didn't have our order and could locate it in their system. When asked how that happened, after being told our order was almost ready, the answer was "I don't know." Terrible service. We will not be going back and will take our business elsewhere. read more

This is my favorite pizza place in town. I know it's just a chain restaurant but I think their pizza flavors and crust are on point. With pint night deals on Tuesdays and Trivia Night in Wednesdays, this place does it all. The decorations are kind of hippy - like 70s looking and it's by no means a super fine dining establishment (the plates remind me of school cafeteria plates). But the pizza is so good. I love the Holy Shiitake Pie, the Red Potato Pie, and the Thai pizza. I have a picture of the Thai one and the Holy Shiitake Pie. You can also ask for a thinner crust if you aren't a fan of larger crusts and they have gluten free options! Went here 8pm on a Saturday so of course it was completely mobbed with students and pretty noisy. The staff also looked to be students and were super busy but also very nice and provided great service. We were in from out of town. I have to say this is some of the best pizza any of us have had anywhere in the country, and my wife is from New York and has very high standards. Also in our party we had a vegan and a gluten-free so we ordered one vegan, one GF and one regular pizza so we got to try a variety. They were all spectacular. Vegan pizza in particular is tricky because there aren't many good cheese options but this one was fantastic. The crust on the GF was crispy crunchy and delicious, so many GF crusts are terrible. The vegan pizza came out with the wrong sauce and went sent it back. My "save the world" vegan daughter wanted to make sure the food wouldn't go to waste and the server assured her that someone on the staff would eat it. I thought this was very sweet and a nice extra effort. Overall I'd very highly recommend the place and we are going to seek out other locations elsewhere in the country, I'm pleasantly surprised to find that it is a chain. read more

Mellow is much more than just a pizza parlor. Upon entering the restaurant you will immediately notice the hippie theme of the space. The pizza names tend to follow in-line with that. There are a number of creative and fantastic pizzas offered along with all the basics. Mellow has excellent thin-crust with Parmesan mixed in. There are a host of toppings and sauce with everything tasting fresh. These prime pizzas don't come without a little bump in the price. Mellow is better for specialty pie rather than a cheap slice. In addition to their pizza, mellow has some 40 odd beers on tap which are just $2.50 a glass on Tuesday or $1 off when it is raining (as of May 2017). Wednesday nights there is Trivia but during the academic year it is recommended you come early to get a table on either night. Mellow's interior is... mellow! Which means it is a nice place to hang out even when the crowd gets a bit boisterous on weeknights. It is great for pizza and beer and I recommend it for something easy but a little out of the ordinary (just a little). read more

My favorite pizza in Cville, both for take out and dining in. Their strength, as I have gradually discerned, is a consistently crispy and fluffy crust that never comes soggy. Some of the pizzas that pile on too many ingredients, like House Special and Mighty Meaty, can end up being a salty mess. But the more minimalist options like Kosmic Karma or a make-your-own with a more limited set of ingredients are great. The restaurant is also super family-friendly, and lots of people are there with kids at "Toddler Dinner Hour" - about 5 - 6pm - which is both when toddlers eat and when they can be permitted to eat in public without inciting a riot since no one else is trying to get dinner that early. They have crayons and coloring pages to keep kidlets who can't survive a 15-minute wait for food occupied. Prices are very reasonable and there are always leftovers to take home. Because prices are good and food is plentiful, coming here with my family for a casual dinner is never the stressful experience of fancier places where you feel like you have to make it WORTH it to go out even when your kids aren't at all into it. Had I known that Mellow Mushroom was a huge Southern pizza chain, I probably would have skipped this place. However, I didn't and the fact there was an enormous line waiting for a table kinda drew me in. I mean, wouldn't you want to know why everyone is waiting for this pizza too? It must be good or something. Turns out it was some tasty pizza indeed! They have a huge menu from pizza to humus to deli hoagies. I ordered the Mighty Meaty pizza and I was mightily pleased. I gave my food politics a break for a moment while I plunged myself into an eating ecstasy. Their pizza is a soft doughy pizza, but it was the massive amounts of meat toppings that was the real carnivore pleaser. The place gets extremely packed with students and families so expect to wait a while for a table. I opted to sit at the bar and eat my pizza. Yay! Hubs just finished working on a major project at work and he wanted to go somewhere to celebrate - and it was HIS choice on locations, so without even discussing it, we set off yesterday evening for some of C'ville's most delicious homemade pizza! The traffic was heavy on the way to the Corner (there was a concert at JPJ Arena) but nothing could stop hubs on his quest for yumminess. Once we arrived, it was a 5-10 min wait, but we were seated promptly at a booth in the main dining area, so that was all good...especially since we were seated BEFORE 6 PM so hubs could partake in the happy hour! He had a great priced Starr Hill JOMO Lager....happy hubs!! I have transitioned back into flexitarianism so I had a 'little' chef salad and then hubs and I shared a 1/2 order of the cinnamon honey pretzels (AHHHHMAZZZING) and the pizza was a 10" house special. As a die-hard Chicago-style deep dish fan, I was apprehensive of finding a pizza place in the area after moving to Cville last year. Yet, Mellow Mushroom won my heart after the first bite. Although it's a chain (mostly in the South), it still has unique appeal with its location in the undergrad area of The Corner, its impressive selection of about 40 craft beers on tap, along with its food/drink deals like Pint Night, Happy Hour, Trivia and Lunch Specials. The pizza is a stand-out mostly because of the crust. It has tons of flavor from the parmesan and garlic, with the right amount of thickness, and it's hearty/pure with its wheat flour and spring water base. I also appreciate the numerous flavor combos that you could achieve by building your own, or ordering one of their tried and true. I'm a fan of pesto so the Kosmic Karma and Magical Mystery Tour are my favs. As for apps, I've enjoyed the Pretzels and Stuffed Portabello Mushrooms. I ordered the pretzels based on recommendation, as I'm not usually into them. But these are made from similar dough from the crust so they're just the right amount of soft on the inside, crisp on the outside texture! You can dip them into savory or sweet sauces. A few tips to save on the bill: 1) Coupons/discounts - Sign up on the email listserv to receive sporadic discounts. There is also a chance to save $5 on your next bill once you complete a survey on the bottom of your receipt. 2) Select specific times to go - For nearby employees, their Happy Hour specials are convenient and such a steal with craft on draft, especially when ordering a pitcher. Oh, Mellow Mushroom-- This is one of the most eccentric restaurants in Charlottesville, and I love it: a health-oriented pizza restaurant with a stoner vibe and great beer selection. Food: There are not many pizza places that can claim to be health food, but Mellow does a good job of it. There's a huge selection of veggie toppings and specialty pizzas as well as salads. This would be a great place to take a vegetarian to, but then you'd be missing out on the jerk chicken pizza. Ingredients are really fresh. A less heralded highlight is that they have the best cheesesteak on the corner, because the meat is cooked fresh, not from frozen or reheated like the disgusting ones at littlejohn's. Looking for fries with your sub? Sorry, no fried shit here. Go to college inn. The pizza crust also deserves a special mention because it's delicious. It's whole wheat, but the secret ingredient is a bit of molasses. They don't make it from scratch though, for that you'll have to go to Dr Ho's in southern Albemarle Co. Beer- Around 30 different beers on tap, almost all for a standard price. They almost always have Paulaner and Weihenstephaner hefeweizen, as well as Delirium Tremens, and a huge assortment of American microbrews. As one reviewer noted, service can be pretty laid back because the staff is its own tightly-knit, highly incestuous social scene, so be prepared to take your time. I'm pretty sure if you took a look at my genetic make up my genotype would read: PIZZA. So, with Mellow Mushroom being a Pizza place you bet I tried it and then kept trying it. The pizza is delicious and my favorite is the House Special or the Mega Veggie (minus the artichoke hearts and feta). The crust as mentioned by a bevy of previous reviewers is in fact an herb tasting dough that when paired with sweet toppings and salty meats is unique in flavor. The House Special is a salty meaty conglomerate that ranges from bacon, pepperoni, sausage, to mushrooms, olives, tomatoes, etc. It's basically pizza topping heaven. The Mega Veggie is exactly what it sounds like and contrary to the veggie nay-sayers out there it has a hell of a lot of flavor especially when you add pineapple. Trust. Now as far as the restaurant itself, this place is causal and choke full of college students. As a result, it can be a loud crowded gathering in the evenings. However if you come during the afternoons it can be calmer. From time to time MM also has themed nights such as Trivia which can be fun, but again, kind of crazy with the onslaught of people jammed in there. Also note, that if you're looking for delivery MM only delivers starting at certain times in the early evening so be aware before you call. While visiting my sister at UVA over the weekend she suggested we get pizza at a placed she called Mellow's. Did not expect it to be called Mellow Mushrooms. And there were artsy type mushrooms everywhere. It kind of felt like we were inside a mushroom. We walked in and the waitress told us to seat ourselves. They have a decent sized menu with non-pizza options too. And they offer glueten free and honey wheat crust options (shout out to my healthier friends). They're pizza choices are interesting too and some choices that I had never heard off. My boyfriend ordered the Jamaican Jerk Chicken Pizza, which he said was really good and had a good amount of spice to it. My sister and I split a pizza: it was half of their ceasar salad pizza and half of the red skin baked potato pizza. It sounds like a strange combination, especially putting salad on a pizza. But let me tell you, it somehow worked! It was really good. It really was like eating a baked potato on a pizza. The trick was they didn't put a tomato based sauce for the two pizzas, which I think was a good idea. I'd go back to Mellow's again. read more

My preferred pizza spot in Charlottesville! I'll take Mellow Mushroom over Christian's any day. They make some great specialty pizzas. I've had their Kosmic Karma (feta and mozzarrella, spinach, sun-dried tomatoes, and pesto) and gourmet white (olive oil, sun-dried tomatoes, provolone, feta, mozarrella, and onions). Both were delicious. There's a variety of ingredients beyond the typical cheese, red sauce, and veggies or meats. They have a buffalo chicken pizza, red skin potato pie pizza, and even a pizza with Thai chili sauce. I love that the crust is doughey and thick. Mellow Mushroom also has a selection of hoagies, calzones, as well as a nice beer selection. You can join their Beer Club to earn points towards rewards. This is really a review for Wednesday night trivia. Since it was my birthday, and I love trivia, Mellow Mushroom was a perfect fit. Add the fact that most of my guests love great pizza and cheap beer, and we were in business! To accomodate our group of 10, the hostess recommended that we come at 7 (trivia starts at 9) and it worked out well. We got a large enough table and were able to eat leisurely before the games began. The trivia itself was well organized, but it was incredibly hard to hear the rules at the beginning, given the sheer volume of people that were crammed in the room. The staff actually set up a few card tables to seat all the large groups! In total, it seemed like there were 25+ groups of at least eight people competing! The questions were challenging (we did not turn in a stellar performance) but it was clearly a large group of undergrads. The level of maturity in the naming of the teams, the randomly shouted out words in between rounds, and the evident cheating made me feel like an old person at the new age of 26. The food was excellent as always, I thoroughly enjoyed my birthday splurge on bacon pizza (so bad for you but soooo good!). I don't think I would go again unless it was another party, just too immature and rowdy for this person so far from her UF days. read more

I'm a big fan of Mellow both for the pizza and the beer. First about the pizza. It's a bit pricey for the corner but totally worth it given the quality of the ingredients and the huge array of toppings to choose from. The mighty meaty, philosopher, and cosmic Karma are all excellent. The sandwiches are quality as well if you're not feeling pizza. Now the beer. Best selection on the corner hands down. It's a huge list of taps that's constantly changing and recently got rearranged to feature local beers. They have a great beer club which rewards you with a 20 ounce mug which can be filled at 12 ounce price just for drinking there. They've also got a great happy hour ($2 beers from 4-6) and pretty good specials including Tuesday night all night happy hour prices. My only issues with Mellow are how packed it gets at night (that's more an issue with undergrads though), the service is slow even for C'ville (go to the bar if you're only there for beers, it's way faster), and that they recently got rid of Big Buck Hunter which was a mellow tradition for my group of friends. Lastly, the trivia on Wednesdays is fun and way more accessible than McGrady's. However, be careful because there aren't any good specials on Wednesday nights and your bill will be way more than you expect, just warning you. read more

I've eaten at several Mellow Mushroom locations. This one is tops so far!!!! Staying in Charlottesville for work. Two associates and I went in for dinner last night. Our server, Peyton was fantastic! We sat on the upper deck to people watch. Peyton greeted us, and everyone she dealt with, with a smile. Very pleasant and attentive. I ordered a gallon of sweet tea to take with me. The place itself was filled with paintings on the wall and some decor that gave it that "Mellow Mushroom" vibe. Definitely a good place to hang out with friends. Although the pizza was pretty good, I gave this place 4 stars just bc I felt like the pizza itself didn't "stand out" compared to other good pizzas I've had. It was still good though! I read above that there was a Yelper that said they had friends from NY and Mellow Mushroom was the best pizza they have ever had, really??? The variety that they have is certainly impressive. The jerk chicken pizza is pretty good but again, it isn't the best you will ever have. It is just jerk seasoning on some sliced chicken, nothing mind blowing. The sandwiches are okay as well. The beer selection is very impressive. They always have some sort of special going on so you can get your brew on for cheap. The decor here is very bizarre. It really is like something out of a stoners dream, and I think it goes with the name as well. Whatever it is, I am not impressed, I do not find it amusing, it is not charming, I find it flat out weird. To summarize, this is not the best pizza in cville. Read some reviews here and decided to get the Kosmic Karma for take out. Finding parking outside was a nightmare, but finally i scored some quick short term parking. If you are dining in there is a large parking garage right next door so its a non issue in that case. Walked in with my 5 year old and immediately saw other families with even little babies. Definitely what i would call family friendly. Got the pizza home, and I have to say it was a slice of heaven. Crust was nit too thick under the toppings, but pretty thick at the rim of the pizza. The crust was big but still not to heavy. My kids who usually leave the crust behind ate the crust on every slice. Specialty pizza was a bit pricy at 22 for the kosmic, but it was good pizza so its worth it. I plan to take the family there next time and perhaps review the dining experience. read more

Ordered two individual pizzas. A Funky Q Chicken with an Oil & Garlic Base and a Great White Pizza with No Base sauce and added Ground Beef.. I was a little worried buying two small pizzas for around $30.. but wow the flavors really popped. The barbecue was just the right amount in each bite. Mellow Mushroom pizza is probably the best I've ever had! They have so many options to choose from that it's hard to pick... After many visits there, however, I have come to find my favorite and regular order is the Mellowteranean (chicken, feta, olives, red peppers, AND tzatziki dipping sauce on the side). They have vegetarian options (I'm talking every type of vegetable you can think of all thrown on one pie), meat lovers' options (again every type of meat all on one pizza), and everything in between. The crust is the best part, in my opinion. The pizzas have a perfect ratio of topping to cheese to sause to crust ratio, and the crust is dusted with parmesan and never left on my plate. They also have salads (these are great too) and a variety of appetizers. I've had the soft pretzels and they basically taste like their pizza crusts, so again a win for me. On Tuesday nights the bar opens up for pint night, which offers drafts for $2. It gets a little crowded, but is a great casual social scene for college students to meet up for a drink (that's not too expensive)! They have a reward system as well, which gives you a personalized stein if you try every type of beer! Because of the popularity of this place, they do get crowded. On most evenings and definitely on weekends there will be a wait for a table, but it is 100% worth the wait. Truly delicious pizza! Bonus they also deliver within a few miles of the restaurant.
