It's pretty much all been said; Mellow Mushroom is a chain, it's a family friendly restaurant. For the Durham location, it's one of the many choices to visit before a Bulls Game. The pizza is fresh and crust is uniquely Mellow Mushroom, plus there are options other than pizza. The oven roasted chicken wings are great, and the salads are fantastic! You could certainly split a large salad if you're eating light or also enjoying pizza, or eat it as your meal alone. Dressings are house made and Esperanza is my favorite! Some decent drink options and full bar; semi-outdoor seating for nice days. The variable here is the service. Sometimes its great; other times its completely disastrous. For me, that's enough to make me choose another establishment when I have a working lunch. I do think this restaurant is appropriate to the area and will do well no matter the variable in service. read more

I've been to many Mellow Mushrooms in my days, and I can honestly say this is the worst one I've been to. I wish that weren't the case, because it's tucked right beside the Durham Bulls Baseball park, and it's an excellent place to grab a bite to eat before the game. That's what me & 30 of my colleagues did last Thursday. We called ahead for 35 people, and they scrambled around to get us tables when we arrived. They couldn't get tables enough for us, so we got one long table for about 15 and the rest had to sit in booths around an area. Not what you'd expect when reserving 2 months in advance for a party of 35..... So the service. Oh, the service. Who really wants to wait 15 minutes on a beer when the baseball game starts in an hour?! Nobody. Everyone was ordering their second drink with the first drink order because it was taking so long to get beer.... in fact, someone's pizza came before their beer. Hmmmm. Luckily the beer was cold and they had several on tap :) I ordered the stout, which was pretty good (can't remember the brewer but it wasn't local). For apps, we got wings & pretzels. You can't go wrong there :) I ordered the Magical Mystery Tour pizza with sausage, and it was actually pretty good, though the crust was a little chewy. The only downside to it was that I asked for extra jalapenos like 4 times before receiving them. My colleague Chip R. ordered the Special pizza without peppers, and they made it with peppers & without pepperonis. It took them about 30 minutes to bring his correct pizza, and that was after asking 2-3x! It just wasn't pleasant, let me put it that way. All in all, Mellow Mushroom usually doesn't disappoint, but this one was bad. You'd think they'd be able to handle the baseball crowd before a game (since they're 50 feet from the entrance to the stadium), but that's not the case. I hope they kick it in gear! read more

The pizza crust is actually the stand out of the entire meal, which is rare because usually crust is overlooked for the rest of the pie. I love that the pizza is hand tossed and not too doughy. I can't complete a review without giving my opinion about the drinks. So let's just say if you have had a rough day and you need one drink to take it all way (listen up law students) then you need to order the Grateful Dead. This location has a great atmosphere! I enjoyed their pumpkin beer with the sugar cinnamon rim and the Mediterranean pizza. I split a medium sized pizza with my husband which was perfect for 2 people. You can get 2 different kinds of toppings on 1 pizza, which saves you a few bucks (instead of getting 2 smalls). My friend also raved about the meatball appetizer he got! The service was mediocre during our visit, hence the reason for the 4 stars. I came here with some friends from out of town. We all had a pleasant experience. The waitress was extremely nice and was very attentive to anything we wanted. The pizza was fantastic! The pizza came out so hot that we were physically unable to eat it for a few minutes until it cooled down, which is the BEST problem to have when your at a pizza place. I got to watch my pizza at the exact temperature I liked it at just by having it already in front of me and letting it cooldown during some good conversation. We came here for lunch on Sunday with a group of 6 people and I appreciated that we were immediately seated at a big spacious table. Parking is convenient and free at the nearby parking garage for the American Tobacco Campus. Apparently it does get much more crowded with a line where there's a game at the Bulls stadium. Small size pizza comes with 4 slices. The red sauce is super flavorful and not too rich. I'm a fan of thin crust pizza but my husband likes deep dish, so Mellow Mushroom's pizza was the perfect balance of not too deep but not too thin. It also came loaded with tomatoes, green peppers, onions, mozzarella, pepperoni, sausage, ham, and the best part, applewood BACON. The crust is chewy but not too dense, a bit chunkier than I like, but I'm usually a thin-crust kind of person. We were both full after 2 slices each so we had leftovers too! A few people at our table also ordered salads which I'm planning to try next time if I'm not in a pizza mood. Yummy, yummy, yummy good! One of the best meals I have had in quite a time. Server was fantastic. The Enlightened Spinach Salad was amazing. The texture combinations between the spinach, dried cherries, crisp Granny Smith Apple, candied pecans & blue cheese crumbles then topped with the flavor combinations were moan worthy between each bite. Today I order a small salad with dried cherries, green apples, feta cheese, spinach and candied pecans. It was DELICIOUS! I paired it with their balsamic vinaigrette which was equally as tasty. I was disappointed in the pita tips and hummus because I found the hummus on the dryer side. I decided to add to the order some beer cheese sauce, thinking it would be nice to dip my pita points in, and it had a very overpowering beer taste, like SUPER strong. Went here yesterday for my sisters birthday party. She wanted a pizza party. It was a large party (19 people) and the server was very attentive and she did the best she could. She handled all of our requests promptly. I love the atmosphere it's very lively during the day and at night. I had a small pizza with spinach, mushrooms and pepperoni. The location is right next door to Durham Bulls Athletic Park with plenty of seating. We chose to sit outside which was nice and shaded. Our server (didn't get his name) was very nice and attentive. We ordered some chicken wings and they were delicious and meaty. My wife, who suffers from food allergies was able too get a custom made salad (which was huge!) and a gluten free pizza with vegan cheese (pizza joints take notice, you may do more business if you offer gluten free crusts especially with vegan cheese...) I ordered a Holy Shiitake pizza and got the Pretzel Bites for free with Yelp check-in. The pizza was good, but very greasy. It also didn't have any truffle flavor at all from the truffle oil. In fact, there didn't seem to me much mushroom flavor at all, just mushroom texture. I think this is because the flavors were overpowered by the caramelized onions and the garlic aioli. Don't get me wrong, it's a good pizza, but if you are looking for a pizza with nice strong mushroom flavor, this will not satisfy you v The pretzel bites were basically small pieces of garlic bread. Texture was soft and chewy. There was plenty of parmesan on them. I personally wasn't a fan of the dip, but if you like blue cheese flavor and beer, you'll enjoy it. I ordered to-go and the service was not great as there were misunderstandings the whole way. While I was ordering, I asked for a small and the hostess put in an order for a large. I was wondering why the pizza had more than doubled in price. When I was picking up my order, they had forgotten my pretzel bites. The pizzas are obviously the star here, and the crust is soft and chewy - an alternative to many of the artisan pizza spots around RTP now. I really enjoyed the House Special Pizza at Mellow Mushroom. The pizza came with an array of toppings including pepperoni, sausage, ham, green peppers, olives, onions, tomatoes, bacon, and mushrooms. If I could change the the toppings, I would remove the tomatoes as the sweetness of the tomatoes didn't complement the other toppings as well. Maybe if they caramelized the tomato more it would be less sweet. The pizza crust was on the thin side and the cheese was nice and melting. Overall I love the pizza and environment at Mellow Mushroom and I think it's a great spot to grab a bite if you are around American Tabasco or DPAC. read more

If you've been to one Mellow Mushroom you've been to them all and the only reason we dine at this location is its proximity to the baseball stadium. This MM is on the smaller side and their bar is kind of tiny. You get a couple of Duke students in there and it can get loud in a hurry. They do a solid pie here with my favorite being the Philosopher's Pie and a small is plenty to fill me up. We tried their chicken wings this last time around and I will have to pass on them in the future. Nothing remarkable about them. I do enjoy the fact they seem to always have a beer on special that range from $3.50-$4 a pint which is pretty cheap for this town. Like all MM this place is family friendly and has some good outdoor dining. When you don't feel like spending $18 at Pizza Toro, MM is a close 3rd behind Pompieri Pizza when getting a pie in the downtown area of the Dirty D. read more

The Mellow Mushroom has long taunted my siblings and I. The festive mushroom sculptures that adorn the exterior of this location was a perfect welcome as we entered the Mushroom with unrepentant glee. It was like Chuck E Cheeses for adults. As we meditated on what to order, the "Philosopher" seemed like an obvious choice in quelling our pensive appetites. The topping mixes at the Mushroom are pretty exciting. The "Philosopher" has, Steak, Portobello Mushroom Cap, Artichoke Hearts, Kalamata Olives, Mozaralla and Feta Cheeses. The olives and feta make the pie a champion. The crust here is definitely it's own brand and pretty delicious. Mellow Mushroom is top notch in the chain genre and is definitely worth a go or 10. We'll meet again my mellow friend! read more

We sat outside on a Tuesday evening, there were a total of 3 other small parties being waited on by different servers so I don't understand the wait. A solid spot for pizza in the American Tobacco District. Although if you're expecting the New York thin crust or Chicago deep dish, Mellow Mushroom's probably not the choice for you. Their pizza focuses on creative combinations of toppings like the Philosopher (steak, portabello mushroom, artichoke hearts, kalamata olives, provolone, feta, and mozarella). However, I think my favorite is going to be something a friend introduced me to in Pittsburgh, chicken and banana peppers! I know it sounds weird, but it's really good!!! I have found there exists a curious relationship between Durham and its pizza joints. Namely, we don't like them unless they are a national chain with a new gimmick every month (I'm looking at you, Pizza Hut), or they are counter-service places with slices you could use to shade a child (such as whatever it is this month on Ninth St.). Sit-down, non-buffet, local shops? They die, sometimes slowly a la Pizza Palace, or just fold up in the night like Rockwood. So it makes me glad to see places that refuse to fit this mold do well. I've had a long relationship with Mellow Mushroom. If I'm not mistaken, I first ate at the one in Boone in 1996. At that time I had no idea it was a small chain, and didn't see one again until moving to the Triangle. I was very excited when they added their facade to the new American Tobacco campus, and have found the consistency of experience that I've come to rely on to carry through to today. A caveat- I will eat snails. I find deconstructive food exciting. But when it comes to pizza, I am admittedly dull. I'm almost always a sausage and mushroom guy. I'd defer to those who have reviewed their more creative pizzas for their opinions. I just know that the 'Shroom has amazing crust and great sauce, and they've managed that EVERY SINGLE TIME I've eaten there. I cannot remember even one pizza that didn't recreate that first time I had them in Boone fourteen years ago. I cannot think of any other restaurant I've eaten at consistently that has matched this feat. The only downside I can think of for this particular location is also one of its upsides- it's right next to the ballpark. If you are going to a Bulls game, chances are you will end up here with everyone else also going to a bulls game. Why? It is literally as close as you can get to eating at the stadium without having to go into the stadium. This place is pretty big inside but doesn't take reservations for small groups so if you are going on a game day beware it does get very busy here! There is both indoor and outdoor patio seating. It is clear at packed times that the staff is slightly overworked in having to serve too many tables per server, but for the price of the food you sure do get a giant, American serving! My calzone was big enough to feed two people easily, and the sandwiches come packed with meat and veggies too. Their pizzas are also bigger than you they will be so come here hungry! The food was all your standard pizza/sandwich shop type of fare but there were a ton of options across the menu which means there should be something here for anyone pretty much. You won't break the bank here eating, and you get an excuse to take a photo in front of a giant mushroom. read more

The crust is flavorful (are those cornmeal crumbles I spy?), though a bit too thick for my taste. I prefer cobbling together my own Margherita to eating their plain cheese, as their red sauce isn't really that delicious and the regular mozzarella is likewise lackluster. But with the assembled Margherita, you get their tasty olive oil base and generous helping of basil strips. Woohoo. A little expensive for pizza ($11+ for a 4-slice small with fresh mozzarella, basil, and Roma tomatoes), and I am always disappointed that they have nothing in the way of eggplant on the menu, but if you're in the area and have a hankering for casual comfort food, it's a good and safe bet. I'm always cranky at Mellow Mushroom because it's really expensive. My bill for 2, for pizza and beer, usually ends up around $40. But then every time I have it I remember how delicious it is. So this was my first Mellow Mushroom experience. I'd heard so many wonderful things and was really excited about going after seeing the amazing menu online...but I have to say, both my boyfriend and I were disappointed. You can park right next door at the South parking garage for free (or at least it was free at 7pm on a Friday night, which was pretty amazing for downtown). Now for the bad... We started with the Magical Mushroom soup...oily, bland and lava hot. Cheese bread...bland. The red sauce that came with the bread tasted like it could have come out of a can or maybe it was Ragu. We ordered a medium cheese pie and a small Philosopher's Pie - we were served 2 small pies, and our waitress (who I'm pretty sure toked up on break while someone else served our pizzas) didn't seem to care that she'd made a mistake. Again, oily and bland and frankly, by the time we left I kinda felt sick to my stomach. Also, really loud in there so it was a little tough to converse at times and in our booth facing the windows I actually had to put my sunglasses on because the setting sun was in my face for all but the last 5 min we were there. *Helpful hit for the not thin folks, pick a table not a booth, the booths are pretty cramped* Pretty expensive for pizza, $11 for a 4 slice small pie (the next size up is about $10 more), and for lackluster service and quality...no thanks.
