"Great pizza and other choices on Old Chapel Hill Rd" Came here on a Saturday evening just after 6pm. I had been here before but it'd been probably 8-10 years. It was nice seeing a kids' play area immediately on the left upon entry. One orders at the counter and then the food is brought to your table (or for takeout). The menu was relatively broad-- sandwiches (like chicken parm), appetizers, pizzas (of course), calzones, and more. What was MOST impressive though was the range of pizzas. You could order a vegan-cheese pizza with vegan pepperoni. Much appreciated as someone who's lactose intolerant! They also had cauliflower/ gluten-free crust options for those who need it. Many creative toppings too. They also had a range of bottled drinks and non-alcoholic beer, too. My dining partner and I got a vegan cheese 14" pizza with vegan pepperoni and green bell peppers. The food came out in maybe 10 minutes. It was quite good-- not the best pizza I've ever had by any means, but loved that it was vegan (yay, no lactose), and it was tasty. The size was perfect-- I "could" finish half, but I'd have been VERY full, so we left with a few pieces of leftovers. Service was great! Even though we had to bus our own tables, the folks cooking asked us how we liked it, chatted us up as we ordered and more. Price was fair. I can't speak to the service or atmosphere since this was takeout brought to me by friends but I can absolutely speak to the sandwich. And unfortunately, it was...yucky. I ordered what's been, in the past, an amazing chicken cheesesteak (or whatever it's technically called): No green peppers, add banana peppers. Side of fries. Simple. Comforting. Reliable. What I received was essentially a whole loaf of bread with a light suggestion of chicken, a few onions, and what appeared to be a ceremonial dab of mayonnaise. In other words: dry, chewy, and just plain gross. There were no banana peppers, which was really the only customization. And the first red flag? When I picked up the sandwich and it felt as light as a feather. Never in my life should a cheesesteak feel weightless. It genuinely seemed like someone tried to compensate for the lack of filling by throwing in approximately one pound of cold fries. That strategy did not work. To add context: my friends were doing me a solid by picking up dinner and coming over to keep me company after a pretty rough week recovering from an accident. I was sore, cranky, and just wanted a hearty, comforting sandwich. Instead, I got a bread-based metaphor for sadness and disappointment. I've had good experiences here before, which honestly makes this more frustrating. I hope this was a one-off and not the new standard because no one craving comfort food deserves to unwrap a sandwich and feel sadness. Do better for the next person. The service was excellent, the restaurant has a nostalgic pizza place style, and the food was good. We got the Polpette and Granny Smith Apples calzones and both were delicious. The bread was so soft and fluffy. The combo of apples and cheese was a nice sweet/savory mix and the meatballs with cheese and sauce were perfect classic pizza flavors. The sauce was not too sweet or salty, but a little bit thin. Good for dipping though. Pop's is SO good! I've lived in Durham for several years and have no idea how I missed this gem! Outdoor seating and tons of great pizza combinations, awesome lunch specials, and several options for draft beer/cider. Great service and delicious pizza! Found this little spot as we did a short visit to watch the blue devils baseball. It was delicious and the dough was fresh. Loved the apple and Brie calzone! We ordered online but wanted to eat at the restaurant. So they packaged our food which made it a little underwhelming. French fries were not good. Some soggy some Burt and dried. Don't get me wrong, I'm half Italian, & I love my garlic. But, the huge portions of garlic cloves that were on the pizza (& my other daughter's spaghetti that's not pictured) is ridiculous. The meatballs were way too salty and crumbling which means they were overcooked before being frozen and thawed. The middle was undercooked and had no support to it. It was like trying to eat a wet paper towel. I remember being excited when they first opened up because they were an offshoot of the beloved Pop's restaurant in the Brightleaf Square area. I even remember getting and enjoying a pizza and applauding the fact that there was now a good pizza joint in this part of Durham. I had a coupon and called in my order for takeout on a drizzly Monday evening. I brought my coupon with me, showed it to the counterperson, and had no problems with the payment and pickup experience. The food, however, was a mixed story. My wife enjoyed the flavor and size of the house salad (a bargain for $4.50) and I enjoyed the light and tasty tiramisu. Our pizza was disappointing, however. We got the Veggie Lovers pizza which is supposed to come with artichokes, onions, green peppers, mushrooms, green olives, and goat cheese. I think we found one piece of artichoke on it and barely any mushrooms. Maybe their other pizzas are better but ours was underwhelming, even when we added our own red pepper flakes and Italian seasoning. read more

It has Shaved Beef, Herb Roasted Mushrooms, Gorgonzola & White Truffle Oil. This is outstanding Pop's food in a nice casual dining room at what seems like half the price. I love being able to just bounce in, have the cashier hand me a beer, and just take a seat. No pressure, just amazing food. It's rich, and filling, and luxurious. I'll probably never order anything else, and can't recommend it highly enough. I also need to just add, their specials are also a great opportunity for classic Pop's food at bargain prices. On our first visit he ordered crab-stuffed shells in a pink sauce, for ONLY $8!! It was rich and creamy and homemade, and we had some to take home. Okay, I have to be honest Pizza is not my favorite food. But, occasionally I do have a craving for it so I ordered it and a salad delivered by UberEATS today. I was really disappointed from the get-go because they're was no napkins or plastic ware to eat my salad. Frustrating. The salad dressing looks like it came straight out of the refrigerator and it's solid? Definitely would not pour out on my salad even if I did have a fork to eat it with. The pizza was so-so. And had quite a lot of burnt on it, even on the bottom which some people might like however it ruins the taste for me. I am actually super surprised by how much I enjoyed the pizza from Pop's. We got the Granny Pizza and Buffalo Chicken Ranch Pizza to go. Both were still hot after the 15 minute drive home. The flavors of both were so good! I was worried the Granny Pizza might be too sweet, but it was actually pretty savory due to the ricotta cheese. Our favorite was definitely the Buffalo Chicken Ranch Pizza. Just enough chicken, not really spicy, and the ranch wasn't overpowering at all. The crust is thin and really good! The wings were okay. Just what you would expect from hot wings. They were not too spicy either. The only recommendation I'd have for them is to educate their employees on the Shop Durham Card. I used my 2020 card to get 10% off my purchase. The employee had never seen or heard of it before and had to ask her boss about it, which I guess he had to check what the discount was too. I know it's only been out for a year, and I think the business recently listed the discount, so I think it'll just take time for businesses to get used to people using these cards. A group of friends and I enjoyed Pop's Backdoor last night! It was the first time there for all but 2 of the group, and we all enjoyed it. Everyone ordered something different, and we all thought the food was very good! I enjoyed a bowl of pasta, where I picked my pasta and sauce, and added several pizza toppings (several veggies, but the usual meats were available too) at $2/piece. At Pop's Backdoor, you order food and drinks/beer at the counter. Food is brought to you, and fountain drinks are self-serve. We got our food fairly quickly, especially considering the size of our group. Although there weren't any children in our group last night, they do have a kids menu, and a small kid's play area in the corner. I look forward to returning! read more

The prices are really reasonable. $3 for any 2 topping slice of pizza, $4.50 for a HUGE small salad, and $8.99 for 10 wings.
