    Melrose Mansion, New Orleans

The staff, specifically Caleb the manager were amazing and accommodating! I stayed for 10 days in the Donecio Suite, the Grand Balcony suite and I never wanted to leave. Highly recommend the Melrose Mansion, only two blocks from Bourbon street and we having coffee on the private balcony every morning was the best

Pros: Close to French Quarter and Frenchman Street Bed was comfortable. Nice pool area Cons: Upgraded to a room with a bathtub, mildew all over the tub. Brought it to staffs attention and nothing was done. Shower was broken warm water showers.Bathtub enclosure is so high, if you dont have 6ft legs this could be hazardous, and stepping out onto slippery tile is tough. Staff recommended a 2 star restaurant... UGH Room had spiders in the dresser drawer. Breakfast was MEH ( basic low budget) and 2 hours prior to close granola and fruit bowl were empty. 2 bath towels per day in room No curfew on pool area... extremely noisy all night long Over all the house is quaint. But needs a good deep cleaning. My experience if there are empty rooms and no one is booked a small intimate place will upgrade you at no charge( especially if you take care of the staff hence nice tips) We were charged an additional $60 plus tax and fees on the upgrade?? The reason for the upgrade was for a bath, and the bath had extreme mildew( refund on upgrade was denied). So at that was it worth $750 for 3 nights. NO!! **This place needs attention to detail and customer service training**

They broke my dongle! And yes, I am fully aware of how that sounds but that's its official name and idk what else to say about it.

I wanted to love this place. And while I stayed there I did, but it was my dealings with staff and management after my stay ended that will keep me from recommending to friends and family. Long story short, I left a cellphone attachment in my room, called and asked if it were possible for them to send it back and was told it was no problem but if the credit card on file would possibly be charged for shipping. After 3.5 weeks and multiple conversations where I was passed around to different staff members, it finally came in today...damaged. They threw it in a regular postage envelope instead of charging me the extra $ and I guess it got jacked up en route. Look, it's not about the attachment. Like I told them, I could have just ordered another off of Amazon and had it to me in 2 days. (It's $40 bucks so this way would have saved me some money) It's more about follow through and showing care for their guests after they check out. I would think repeat business is important for a boutique hotel in a town like New Orleans, which I imagine has loads of options. Sorry for your service Melrose. Also, the continental breakfast is a joke and $26 for parking is ridiculous.

Stayed here mid June - for a last minute trip to New Orleans. We booked our room via Expedia on a whim... based on reviews and a couple of photos. Taxi drops us off just after midnight - we had arranged for a super late check-in following our flight. Everything about it gave the perfect first impression - the small iron gate, the way the chandelier light bounced off the living room walls, the jazz music softly playing, the chic/modern decor. Very sleek bed and breakfast feel, while still staying in a 'hotel.' We checked in at the "front desk" - it's actually inside what would be the kitchen of the mansion- and were personally walked to our room. When was the last time you got an actual room KEY?? Definitely added to the charm. Since this place was built in the 1800's, be prepared for creaky floors, funky doors, and narrow doorways. We stayed in Napoleon Suite #2 - huge space, great bed, super high ceilings, beautifully remodeled marble bathroom. Here are the down sides: -- very easy to spill water out of the marble shower. huge puddle the first night, kinda got the hang of it the rest of the trip - still annoying. -- very little natural light in the room. Our room was on the side facing the building next door, so I didn't want to have windows open (altho in the summer, it's best to keep the room dark) - but still wish we had a big window we could've opened up in the morning without staring at a wall or an alley. -- location is great because it's a quiet neighborhood, it's off the craziness of Bourbon Street, BUT... definitely saw some shady characters at night... AND one of our tour guides told us to be careful in that area. -- "convenience" charge is annoying bc we were never in the hotel during the hours of the "complimentary" wine/cheese/breakfast In spite of the list, I give it 4 stars because Melrose Mansion made for a VERY memorable first trip to New Orleans... definitely added to the charm. OVERALL - I'd do it all over again... although next time I'm curious about the bigger suites. :)

Beautiful & historic, the Melrose Mansion provides comfortable, cozy accommodations. We reserved the Executive Suite and it was grander and more stunning than I ever could have imagined. At 1300 sq ft. it has it all - from a full kitchen to a washer and dryer. The bathroom was incredible! Full walk in shower that could easily fit 3 adults and an oversized jacuzzi tub! The staff was friendly and professional. They accommodated everything we asked for. The hotel offers a lovely wine and cheese reception and their breakfast was a perfect continental breakfast. The only thing keeping me from giving the hotel 5 stars, is that none of their rooms accommodate 3-4 people. We had three in our room, and the third had to sleep on the couch. You would sure think there would be some kind of bed (or a rollout) in a 1300 sq ft. suite. Also, we didn't realize there was a charge for the third person (of $25 per night) for the 3rd person. That being said, I would definitely return to this property if I travel to NOLA again as long as I only had 2 people.

The 2 things I care most about when staying in a hotel is a comfortable night's rest and a good bathroom/shower. The bed in our room was the most uncomfortable mattress I have ever slept on in my entire life. It was so mushy that when you laid your head down, you sunk so far into it that your legs were literally 45 degrees above your head. I ended up sleeping upside down in the bed with my head where your feet go in order to feel even remotely comfortable. The pillows were all extremely flat, when you put your head on one it sank so far your face was about 1/2 inch from the mattress. I had to use 3 pillows stacked on each other. I had a stiff back, neck and joints the entire time we were there. The 2nd issue was hot water. The first morning, we attempted to shower, it only got barely luke warm for me and when my husband showered immediately after he only got ice cold water. We stopped at the front desk that morning on our way out for the day and told the woman at the front desk. She said she hadn't received any other complaints so it must be specific to our room and she would send engineering there to look at it. (we were getting hot water in the sink). Later that evening when we returned to our room, we immediately tested the shower again and it was still ice cold. So we went back to the front desk to check if engineering had come. We spoke to the same woman from the morning who acted like it was the first time we were telling her this and she said the exact same thing. I asked if they were going to come ASAP because we needed to shower soon and we couldn't take ice cold showers. She ignored my question and answered the ringing phone. A manager happened to be at the desk and overheard our conversation. He asked what our room number was and said that because of the old building and the pipes the hot water takes longer to get there. He said this was a KNOWN Issue by the staff, management and the owner. He told us to run the shower for AT LEAST 15 to 20 minutes, simultaneously with the sink and it should get hot. He also offered to move us to a different room but when I asked if he could guarantee if we wouldn't have the same problem in that room he couldn't give me a straight answer. We had already unpacked everything and didn't want to go through that hassle without a guarantee. So we went back to the room and let it run for 20 minutes and it eventually got hot. So for the remaining 3 mornings, we had to set our alarms for 30 minutes earlier so we could get up and run our shower before hand. For nearly $300 a night, we felt that this was ridiculous. Old building or not, if its a problem, then either don't put people in those rooms, or get it fixed somehow. Why should anyone be subjected to an ice old shower or an inconvenience to their time because the owner hasn't done anything about it? We visited the hotel Bar, the Bourbon O'bar 3 times during our stay and each time we received TERRIBLE service. None of the bartenders were friendly to us, in fact they were pretty rude. Each time it took them at least 10 minutes to even take our order (by standing there and looking at us and not saying anything). The bar was not busy or crowded any of these times. They would then start making one of our drinks, put it down and make other people's drinks, leave and go into a back room, play on their cell phone, talk to each other, or carry the glass around while doing other things. My husband ordered an old fashioned and the alcohol was sitting in the jar with the ice for over 5 minutes while the bartender carried it around doing other things, causing it to get watered down. When making a cocktail, it should be completed from start to finish without doing other things in the middle. I ordered the Mardi Drop cocktail on 2 different days. The first time, it was actually very good. The 2nd time from a different bartender it was horrible .He also sprinkled probably a tablespoon of cinnamon on top of it (which the first didn't have) which made it nearly undrinkable. I had to stir it into the martini in order to not get a mouthful of cinnamon with each sip. We didn't eat at the hotel restaurant Roux because of the bad Yelp reviews - we felt we could get a better breakfast elsewhere outside the hotel. Overall, I wouldn't recommend this hotel at all unless you don't care about being comfortable or friendly service.

At check-in the rep asked "did you mean to book that room?" Yes we did!! We originally requested a 3rd floor private balcony but were given a 4th floor private balcony and oh hell yea was this perfect. Open the French doors and the cacophony of Bourbon St. envelopes the room; it's everywhere. But close the French doors and it's quiet; how I don't know but perfectly comfortably quiet for us. Added bonus, this being Easter, our 4th floor balcony gave us such a fantastic viewing spot to watch the colorful sights coming down Bourbon heading to the gay Easter parade a few blocks away. Our room also gave us a great vantage point for watching sunrise with the St.Louis Cathedral steeple in the foreground. On our final night we decided to order take-out to enjoy from our balcony; dinner and a show essentially, and cheaper too.
