Mel's Hard Luck Cafe is a total embodiment of ALL you can expect from a great place like Branson! The moment you walk in the building the staff are working tirelessly to make sure your experience is a great one. Talk about multitasking, just watching the waitstaff serve while singing is amazing. Our server was so sweet and sang to my husband and I in honor of our 15th Anniversary. It made for such a sweet memory we won't soon forget. Now let's talk food! I ordered the cheesesteak sandwich with fries and let me just say it was so delicious. The sandwich was packed with meat, peppers, gooey cheese and mushrooms. I only made it halfway through not for a lack of trying, it was just so big. The fries were okay but nothing spectacular, they were nice and hot. My husband ordered (The smoke in my eyes burger) and said, it was flavorful and juicy. The only negative was the bun, he felt the bread itself was lacking. So he ate it without the top bun. Toasting the bun may make all the difference and next time we'll ask for it that way. Last but not least we finished our meals off with a piping hot cherry cobbler with vanilla ice cream. We originally planned on only having a bite or two due to the fact we were so stuffed. Who were we kidding one bite and that cobbler didn't stand a chance. All in all if we ever make our way back to Branson, we are definitely stopping back by Mel's! read more

Fun place to eat with good food, friendly singing waitstaff, and lots of fun memorabilia on the walls to entertain you while you're waiting for your food. One of the best dining experiences that I've ever had. Jimmy, our server, made our whole experience memorable with his easygoing demeanor and great attitude. We had a four year birthday girl, and he and the other staff helped make it special with their special birthday song and cake! This is perhaps the best diner in Branson. The food is traditional diner food and is pretty good. The prices are extremely reasonable too. However, the thing that sets this one apart from the others is that the waiters and waitresses sing songs in between (and sometimes during) serving the customers. The first time I came here, I didn't know about the live singing and I heard a Patsy Cline song playing and I couldn't believe that the waitress was singing it. It sounded just like Patsy. read more

Just diner food w/some live singing. We had a good vantage point at the counter to see all the action at the grill. I had a serious craving for onion rings based on the praise given by Elite Yelper, Nydia M. (under Mel's Hard Luck Diner which has a bad address). She should probably be stripped of her elite status. LOL. Kidding - maybe. For truly superior o-rings, I expect handcut and hand breaded. I watched the fry cook dump these frozen out of a box that said Moore's on the side. The real KILLER here was the $7.50 price tag for 10 of them!!!!!! Abominable... This place is great as far as diners go. The staff is very friendly and welcoming. My family only had salads but they were fantastic. I didn't even remember to take a pic of the salad. It was a large portion that I couldn't even finish. It's got that old time diner feel but with a twist. The servers sing while working tables. The desert icecream on top of the cobbler was good , but thats about it. The cobbler had to come from the grocery store in the frozen section. GROSS! NOT HOMEMADE FOR SURE! The singing was nice it was not too crowded when we went and the staff and servers were so very nice. The only reason that I am giving this place three stars is because the food was "OK" at best I had the cheeseburger that looked very large but the meat had no flavor and tasted like it was cut with something like soy. My wife's chicken strips came out nice but were not crisp and also had very little flavor as well. I feel that this is on the same level of food that I would get at a amusement park food stand. read more

The kids will love this diner with singing wait staff! The staff each have their own style and take turns with the entertainment. You're guaranteed to find someone you'll love. Most have a CD available for purchase in the gift shop. My husband had the chili-cheeseburger. It was FANTASTIC! The kids chose the cheeseburger with fries and the spaghetti with a meatball. The singing servers are for real. Picture karaoke but it's your waiter/waitress singing as they walk around the restaurant. When we went it was very quiet (during Covid so few people out and we arrived after regular lunch hours) so it was a tiny bit strange. We got the full attention of the servers since we were the only ones there and it felt weird for someone to be singing to you while you're eating. Singing was good and the staff was friendly and kind. Food was yummy and almost everyone was happy. I had chili and a chicken salad sandwich. Chicken salad was good, chili was ok. Several had the cheesesteak and it was big and yummy. Pot roast sandwich (open faced hot sandwich with gravy) was not liked at all and made my husband sick. The kids spaghetti and meatballs was yummy (kid friendly and plain), chicken strips were meh. The kids got ice cream for dessert and I swear it was about 5 scoops of vanilla ice cream. The waiter had to bring extra bowls and spoons. Very yummy treat! They have a little gift shop and the decor was retro fun. I would come again. read more

This place is horrible. The hard luck is getting a table. We stood there waiting for 15 minutes before someone even acknowledged our presence. Then asked for a table. We were told it's another 15 min wait. A table was leaving and I asked if we could use it. They said it's for parties of 5. As inky 3 people were there I said we've been waiting and would like to use it. I got a shoulder shrug & you can talk to a manager. That's garbage service. I'll never come back here & alright they ate popular I wish no one else's ever would either. Nothing is more insulting that the dismissive shoulder shrug. We ate here based on a friend's recommendation. We were seated in the back corner next to a party of about 20 people. They were there for the softball World Series. About 10 of their party were young children and the adults pretty much left the kids unsupervised at a table of their own. It was so loud and so stressful that we didn't enjoy the experience at all. The waiters sing using microphones while walking around and they were good, but it was extremely loud....add that to the unsupervised kids next to us and it was unreal. My little girl and I actually left and sat outside while my husband finished up. The food was average...lots of grease. I can't imagine returning. read more

Been coming to Branson for years but had never gone here. When asking others their favorite spot someone mentioned here so we gave it a try. Honestly it was just average. Food was ok, nothing special though. Menu is pretty standard, a couple odd/interesting choices. Restaurant really to me wasn't that clean. Was a wait to get in though so obviously others like it or it's just the novelty. Signing is cool I will say. But will probably be awhile before we give this a try though. read more

This place is a cute idea, one I think we need in Memphis with all our musical talent!It's where all those that don't make it as famous singers go to serve food and then sing songs and sell their cds in the gift shop. It looks like a typical 50's type diner and the food is reasonably priced $10 for my burger and fries that was huge. My kids each had a kids meal with drink for about $4, great price for a touristy area. My burger was pretty good too, not amazing but pretty solid. The food at Mel's is simply delicious. We ordered two burgers, the soup of the day, and the county fair alongside a sundae and a coke float. Everything that came to our table was hot and fresh. The singing servers was a great experience, although the sound system is a bit loud when the live music begins so it makes it difficult to talk to anyone at the table. The wait staff was all friendly and accommodating and very chatty. We were expecting mainly 50s and 60s hits but seemed to be mainly treated to contemporary gospel songs. This is a fun place, this is where waiters are up coming or unemployed singers trying to make it. So guess what, they sing, each waiter gets to sing their flavs... This is definitely a diner, the food was good but it was pricey...it was pretty plain, which is what truck food is to me. None special except for the staff... The appetizers were okay, we had sweet potato fries and jalapeno poppers. Then had the burgers, cooked correctly but nothen great. Dessert was good...I guess the servings were very large, which sort of covered the higher prices, then again this is Branson. The music entertainment was fun and talented, the atmosphere was good, the location was good and there was a good crowd. Ok food. The singers walk around singing to a karaoke machine. For some singers they're actually singing. And for others it looks like they're lip syncing. Kids will like it because of the real ice cream shakes and desserts. Because it's in Branson they charge more for everything. I probably wouldn't go back. Not that great. read more
