If you go to the Literacy Advance of Houston (LAH) website, you'll be confronted with a few facts…read morethat should give you pause: * Approximately 52% of adults in Harris County are functionally illiterate in English * Texas ranks 47 out of 50 states, in terms of English literacy levels * 68% of those arrested, 75% of welfare dependents, 85% of dropouts and 72% of the unemployed are identified as functionally illiterate If you're in a self-absorbed mood, the third fact should answer the question, "Why do I care?" quite convincingly. So, who's doing anything about this? LAH is! They are a non-profit organization whose mission is "to teach adults to read, write, and communicate in English so they can achieve their full potential as parents, workers, citizens, and community members." Using strictly volunteer tutors, classes are offered for free at schools, community centers, churches, corporations, and small businesses throughout the Greater Houston area. LAH has been strongly endorsed by a number of local literacy advocates whose names you've heard (some of them are volunteer tutors too): * Author and Houston's First Lady, Andrea White * Former Astro pitcher, announcer and manager, Larry Dierker * Former Oiler quarterback and General Manager of the Houston Dynamo, Oliver Luck * Former Head Coach of the Houston Comets, Van Chancellor * and many more... There are few local charities that are more deserving of some dollars you can leverage into a tax write-off or perhaps even some of your time as a tutor. In addition to the office in Galleria area, they also have an office near Clearlake. Full disclosure: I'm currently not involved with Literacy Advance of Houston in any way but I am a personal friend of its Executive Director and know a member of the Executive Board.

I was ready to start but couldn't because of technical issues. We had some problems setting up my test. When I left the testing room to get help she was helping someone else. I was not happy with the delays. A place like this shouldn't be having technical issues, they are a COMPUTER LEARNING center after all. One thing I did enjoy was that they were able to accommodate my request for a private testing area. The testing room was quiet and peaceful, with many other testers nearby. Overall, I wouldn't recommend this place to a friend. They did not offer flexible payment methods. and the delays (partially due to the fact that they have outdated computer equipment) were a deal breaker for me. Check out Excel Solutions Team instead.

I was impressed by the online instructor of the course. The instructor was actually online conducting the class with audio which I thought was interesting. Nevertheless it made no difference... It was still just as great as having the Instructor in person. Depending on the class you have various options to meet your needs. Plenty of breaks in between and a great feature to look forward to is having access to the course for an additional 6 months after completion and a certificate to add to your resume! Another interesting twist.. I would of never thought it would be in the same building as all of these high end interior design shops. So during your break it's always nice to skim through...

I was required to get an approval from my doctor for them to clean my teeth and they faxed a form to my doctor. The problem occured when I followed up (Pima didnt bother to contact me) with my doctor and said they received and returned. I called Pima and was told the form they received was not signed by my doctor. They said they would send another. I called my doctor who said they did not undertand how Pima could say doctor didn't sign. They received the form again, but Pima fax number was not on form. They attempted to contact Pima repeatedly, but did not receive a call back. I called Pima several times myself and did not receive a call back. So, all I can say is Buyer Beware when it comes to being a patient with Pima Dental Program in Houston, TX.

I've seen other Fortis locations…read morelisted, but they have different addresses, so to be clear, this review is for the Fortis Institute located at 450 N Sam Houston Pkwy E, Ste 200, Houston, TX 77060. I attended this school for the Medical Assistant program to work toward becoming a CCMA (Certified Clinical Medical Assistant). At the beginning, my experience was okay and I didn't have many issues with my classes or instructors. However, as I got further into the program, my experience started to change. There were three staff members in particular that I had issues with. 1. Ms. Marin: I later found out that she would talk about me and my friends, and there were times when she would call us out in front of the entire class in a way that made us feel singled out or less than everyone else. I don't think students should be made to feel embarrassed in front of their classmates, especially by an instructor. 2. Ms. Nun: Whenever I had class with her, I felt like we barely learned anything. I specifically remember my friends and I asking if we could go through the skills list and practice different things to see what we still remembered and what we needed more help with. We were trying to make sure we were actually prepared, but our request was basically ignored and we barely practiced anything. 3. Ms. Moxcley: Toward the end of the program, we were told that we would receive assistance with finding employment. I remember reaching out to her multiple times about finding a job, but I would either receive no response or very little communication. Because I wasn't getting anywhere, I recently contacted Ms. Goss for help finding an MA position. I explained that I'm specifically interested in working as a Medical Assistant in an OB/GYN clinic. She told me she would call me. When she called, I happened to be busy and missed it, but I returned her call shortly afterward. She didn't answer, so I sent her a message letting her know I had called back and was available. This happened Tuesday. By Friday, I still had not received a response to any of the messages I sent afterward. I finally sent another message, and she responded saying she would call me "momentarily." I waited about two hours and still did not receive a call. That is what finally pushed me to leave this review. One of the things students are told is that Fortis will help them with employment after completing the program. In my experience, once you're finished with the school, getting that help has been extremely frustrating. Messages go unanswered, communication is inconsistent, and the employment assistance I was told I would receive has not been what I expected. I also don't understand the point of asking students what area they want to specialize in as an MA if the positions they are being directed toward aren't related to what they said they were interested in. I understand that nobody can guarantee you a specific job, but there is a difference between not being able to guarantee employment and simply not communicating with a former student who is actively asking for assistance. I completed my program and I'm genuinely trying to start my career and put my education to use. I'm not asking anyone to hand me a job. I'm asking for the career assistance and communication that we were told would be available to us. Unfortunately, my experience trying to receive that assistance has been extremely disappointing.

I decided to go with Samira - although a couple other potential options had made breath-taking items, my conversations with them did not present them to be good trainers. I have had 4 sessions with Samira to date, and I am extremely pleased for the following reasons: - The training environment is very comfortable, and she is very easy to work with; - Samira is very professional and organized. Prior to enrolling me, she asked for reasons i was training and ensured to tailor a curriculum to suit my needs; - She is interested in my success, she hides nothing and in fact, sometimes goes overtime. She is also very responsive to off-class questions. - She is knowledgeable and experienced, and continues to stay up-to-date through research, subscriptions and continuous contact with other fashion professors - as such, she teaches new techniques; - She teaches her curriculum but encourages me to switch it up as needed - She is very patient and takes her time to teach me based on my skill level. - She teaches personal classes and they are affordable.
