She was supposed to…read morestay about 20 days, but we chose to transfer her early because we did not feel she was receiving the level of care she needed. She became paralyzed on the left side of her body and came here specifically for therapy and rehabilitation to regain movement. During roughly 13 days at this facility, she only received therapy a few times. It reached the point where my family had to step in and do much of the work themselves like massaging her, helping move her limbs, applying lotion, changing her socks, and trying to keep her comfortable because staff did not seem to be attentive to these basic needs. For a rehab center, this was extremely disappointing. My grandmother is diabetic, non verbal after her stroke, and fully dependent on caregivers. We were told she would be checked every six hours, but this schedule did not feel appropriate for someone in such a vulnerable condition. She spent long periods bedridden and developed significant discomfort, especially from not being repositioned frequently. Watching her in pain was heartbreaking. There were also interactions with staff that felt unprofessional and dismissive when we asked for help or clarification. Instead of compassion, we were often met with rude tones or comments that made it seem as if our questions were an inconvenience. This made it very hard to trust that our grandmother was being treated with patience and respect. We also observed other concerning situations in the facility. For example, we repeatedly saw residents sitting uncomfortably in wheelchairs without assistance, including two residents who had to push each other because staff were not helping them. These kinds of things raised serious concerns about overall attentiveness and staffing. To be fair, not everyone here was uncaring. Michael, Wanda, and Becky consistently showed kindness and compassion toward my grandmother, and Wanda helped arrange additional care and testing when we voiced our concerns. We are truly grateful for them. Unfortunately, not all shifts had staff like them, and care depended too much on "who was working that day." Based on our experience, I would not recommend this facility for loved ones who cannot advocate for themselves or who are fully dependent on staff for movement and communication. Vulnerable patients deserve consistent, gentle, and attentive care, not minimal check ins and families doing the majority of the work. We ultimately transferred my grandmother to another center, where she is finally receiving the care she needs. I hope this facility seriously improves staff training, professionalism, and basic patient care, because the people who live here deserve better.

The food was excellent, facility super clean, Rehab therapists excellent and overall care good. We did have some challenges with my husband's demanding care at first but overtime we worked it our with the caring Director of Nursing Annie and amazing new Executive Director Michael. There were so many positives at Brazo Towers that I recommend it. The care of a stroke patient such as my husband is very difficult and necessitates a very active family advocate all the time. We were very disappointed in the lack of patient activities. Although a vigorous monthly calendar was posted very little activities occurred during my husband's stay. When we were leaving we saw indication regarding possible improvement in that area as well.

I arranged my work schedule so I could take the call, but no one ever called. When I contacted the office the following day, I was told the person assigned to my intake didn't have internet service and therefore couldn't complete the call. We rescheduled, and thankfully that conversation was quick and easy. When it came time for my first counseling session, I was asked if I could change my appointment time. At that point, I had already had such a poor experience that I was considering canceling altogether. I decided to give them another chance, and my first session actually went well. Today was my second session. I logged into the patient portal on time and waited for more than 20 minutes. I have proof that I was logged in because the portal recorded each time I entered the waiting room. When no one joined the session, I reached out to a staff member and also contacted the front desk. They told me they didn't have a direct way to reach my counselor but would send her an email. The next communication I received from Shield Bearer wasn't an apology or an explanation--it was a notice that my card would be charged because I supposedly "did not show up" for my appointment. That was devastating. I did everything I was supposed to do. I logged in on time, waited, contacted the office, and then followed up through both the patient portal and email. Instead of acknowledging what happened or attempting to resolve the issue, I was treated as though I had missed my appointment. Seeking counseling is already difficult enough. When someone reaches out for help, they deserve reliability, communication, and compassion. Unfortunately, that has not been my experience. Today's events left me in tears. If you're considering counseling services, I would encourage you to carefully consider whether this is the right provider for you.
