Called an ambulance to take my husband to emergency. They did blood work and an MRI then left us sitting in the ER waiting room for 4 1/2 hours as of my typing this review. I won't get into details of his issue but he is extremely uncomfortable sitting up and in pain. My daughter recently spent five days on 4th Floor South, and I cannot say enough good things about the care she received. Being in the hospital is never easy, but the nurses, techs and doctors here went above and beyond. Discharged at 3 am with no one to give ride home unless I woke them up on a workday. Stayed in a totally empty waiting room so I could call at 6:00 am. Had been given a sedative so I was still pretty sleep. At 5:30 a female security guard shook me awake and told me to leave. I explained I had been admitted for chest pains and violent nausea and I was still weak but wanted to wait to call people until about 6. She responded either I leave or they would put me out. I had just been sitting there calmly in an empty waiting room. She said you can get on the bus. I can't believe the way I was treated. After my insurance and whatever copayments I have pay Memorial $1,000's upon $1,000's of dollar? I am 67, in a very weakened condition, groggy and Memorial can't wait for someone to come get me? Uber to me is not an option and I live a mile from the hospital. I was told it was because of homeless people hanging out in the hospital. Well I own a house here and pay taxes here and even if I was homeles-that is an unacceptable way of treating someone. Also while I was in the emergency room, my nurse was talking about my condition in a loud enough voice that I could hear her through a closed door. My daughter was transported by ambulance to Belleville, when I got there we were sitting in the emergency room and could hear a nurse talking about nothing related to work saying f*** this f*** that, Damn this Damn that. Talking about past patients. My daughter's ringer clip was off and they never came in to check to see what's was going on. My daughter press the call button, and the person said " im gonna send someone in , I can't understand you" 35 mins after no one came in, she pressed it again. No one said anything. 10 mins later someone came in but didn't know that she called earlier. Probably need to tell the nurses to be more professional that the patient's and the people with them can hear. And don't talk about the patient's , because we can hear them. Hospitalized for over 5 days. Unable to shower. Bathroom was disgusting, dirty, and no hot water. Plumber came up to room to fix. Said he fixed after letting water run 30 seconds claimed fixed and left. Nursing staff and doctors said they couldn't help. Filth breeds filth and they couldn't figure out why I wanted out. came to the ER and waited 4 hrs to be rushed & ignored. they didn't xray the correct part of my body where i said i felt pain. when i asked the doctor if she could see the area i was describing, she seemed irritated & said the area i was describing was "too large". no explanation, just ready to fill out my discharge papers & send me on my way. the room was dirty, a hair on my mattress before i even touched it. trash on the floor. my screen started beeping & turning orange and yellow twice & no one checked on me. it happened while the doctor was in the room & she literally said "thats not yours" & walked out. when the nurse removed my blood pressure reader, she threw it on the floor and didnt pick it up like she always did that. very unsanitary. bathrooms were dirty too. would not recommend. the one star is for the free wifi & charging station. check in nurse ladies were sweet. read more

Had out patient surgery yesterday and every single staff member I met was so incredibly kind. From Angela T at registration, my anesthesiologist, my surgeon Dr McGrady, and my fabulous nurse Alicia. So. We were told to be here at 8:30 this morning. Upon arrival, they took us back and let us sit for 3 hours in a room before the doctor came for pre-op consultation . He didn't even know what exactly was supposed to be done . He had to call his office to find out what he was doing. While waiting in the waiting room, they called me into a room so the doctor could tell me how the surgery went. I sat in there for an hour waiting until I finally just left and went back to the waiting room. The workers were talking loudly about how this was the worst job they have ever had . Coming to the hospital as a child was always fantastic. When I officially "became an adult" with not the greatest insurance the care changed and I never felt the same care. My father has also had multiple surgeries that have never seemed to go right because we are always back "having it fixed." They threw us out of the hospital and said we should never return even for emergency medical services. All because they forgot to give mental health medicne. I had a soft tissue injury that wasn't improving over the course of six weeks so I made an appt with an orthopedic specialist. Got to the appt and staff told me I have to get an x ray before the doc would see me. Being a soft tissue injury, I felt like the x ray was unnecessary and asked to see the doc before we order imaging. This was refused and I was told "he needs something to look at" and couldn't obtain a history and physical exam first without the x ray. Ok, so I asked if I could go to a different facility and was told no. That I have to use their imaging facility. Eventually the staff cancelled my appt. This was a total cash grab and sad to see them ordering unnecessary tests just to run up the bill. read more

I went by ambulance to ER was having chest pain and problems breathing the doctor started treating for pneumonia before he even had gotten all the test done I didn't think I had it I wasn't coughing or even sneezing no fever not even a runny nose then the test came back negative. So I lost all confidence in this doctor. Still had chest pains he tells me it's from my COPD and it's my muscles that are sore. I wanted to stay to see my lung doctor then he really wanted me to just go home well that was another problem I was being evicted so had no home hence my stress that caused the chest pain thought I was having a heart attack seen my lung doctor Monday he got me feeling better by giving me steroids so my breathing got better but then come time for me to go I had nowhere to go was pretty much homeless stuff was put into storage didn't even have any shoes to wear a nurse came into my room saying I wasn't working with social worker and he was pulling my IV's and I was being released kinda with a attitude so I said I need to talk with your boss he left then the social worker came in ask what was happening I told her she said he had the wrong information but she did report to someone that I was working with her I just didn't want to go to a shit hole nursing home they wouldn't like the way I was being treated and they wouldn't like where I was sent it's been over a week and I still haven't had a damn shower or bath had like 5 people say that they was going to get me a pair of shoes still have none I can't eat the food here I been lied to about everything no one would like what I've been though but I think I won't be using Belleville ER again I use to think a lot of them but they left a bad taste in my mouth now I will just go to another hospital they will be the last on my list now was the only place I wanted to go but the treatment I gotten this last time is unforgivable and plus I see they have a lot of bad reviews didn't know this till I wanted to make this review read more

Awful.. Awful Experience... For my elderly mother 6 Hours wait at the ER... for 74 Year old woman... shortness of breath... extremely high BP... Severe Headache... Described preceding symptoms of sudden dizziness.. eye twitching... hearing loss... Had to get in a wheelchair because winded walking from the car to the ER door... (although normally can walk several miles multiple times a week at the YMCA). History of hypertensive crisis previously where they had to stop her heart and start to put back in rhythm... (At this location previously) Ran a few tests and still hasn't heard anything from anyone... After 6 hours here her headache started getting much worse... Then she started getting dizzy... felt like she needed to lay down... She buckled over in a chair shaking uncontrollably... Asked for water... Reception was waiting for triage to ok the water... The triage nurse had zero compassion... and no urgency whatsoever.. Ignored the first 2 requests for help... almost like doing anything to help my mother was a putting her out... Almost wanted to leave to go to a more competent ER.. But someone left an IV tube in her arm.. Completely exposed with blood drops all over it.. I would've gotten her water myself but everything is closed... Finally after several attempts to get help they took her to go check her BP again... communication here is awful... Never ever wanna be in the hospital but so far the staff has treated me very well. Was rushed to the hospital after a bad fall that broke my ankle in several different places. Literally from the 1st person I've encountered has been nothing but helpful and concerned. The security guard who got me the wheelchair and rolled me down to the ER. The ER registration nurses all could see the obvious damage and showed sympathy, while trying to keep me calm. The 3 male nurses and physician who watched over me in the ER; even though they caused me more pain by having to pop my bones back, were still the most caring people I've dealt with. Admitted to the hospital I've had at least 4 nurses and patient care technicians. Phyllis, Carol, Ta'laya, Erin, Ashley and all the rest I can't remember their names. They all seem to have a story or two to make me smile/laugh. All wishing me the best with my emergency surgery and caring for me after. I've been having issues out of my left foot/ankle. My podiatrist is stationed in Belleville and he works closely with Memorial. He requested that I swing by Memorial for x-ray to determine what's really going on. On an early Saturday morning, I made the voyage to Belleville for a few errands. Thank God for GPS bc I wouldn't know my left from my right, if it was let up to my own devices. Thankfully, the ride wasn't bad. Memorial is huge, surrounded by beautifully manicured, quiet lots. Considering its size, the signs make it easy to navigate. There's tons of free patient/vistor parking. Not like in the city, where you either pay a ridiculous amount to park or you circle the block 50 times before scoring. I went through the main entrance to the service desk. I asked for radiology and she directed me right to it. Right off the long, main hallway was Radiology. Amy, the receptionist, took my insurance card and inputted me into the system, taking only a few minutes. I sat in the waiting area all of 10 min before a technologist took me to the back. Kaylie was so sweet, concerning they were short-staffed and had her running around like crazy. She didn't rush the process and took it like a champ. Very professional. Kaylie conducted my x-ray, and I was out of there in no time. Belleville is about 40 minutes from me, so idk when I'll be back. However, I'm not opposed to making the trip, again read more

Most techs and certain nurses are absolutely wonderful, but it's blindingly clear how terrible management is!! The frontline workers get no support and bear the brunt of the abuse (hugely mental and heavily physical from patients), stress, anxiety and stand strong to help those in need. I give 5 stars to the techs and a lot of nurses, but negative stars for the place as a whole! Have never seen such disorganization that goes unattended. Knowing a few employees there I know that complaints are reported and readily ignored constantly! BJC wtf are you doing here?! A 10 hour wait in an emergency room for a elderly male patient with multiple CVD risk factors is the norm here. This is TWICE national average for wait times in EDs. The wait was so long that my mother became dehydrated and fell in the ED bumping her head severely enough to require admission. When the physician was asked about the delay his tone and demeanor changed. Almost as if defensive. His differential diagnosis had every possible cause of falls, except ironically dehydration from waiting for 10 hours. He wanted to compare memorial to Chicago hospitals. But that is not a fair comparison, since it is notable that those suburb hospitals have triage nurses that work the waiting room dispensing humanity to the people suffering there. I doubt that my mothers problems would have occurred in Chicago. Suprisingly, calls to the patient advocate went unanswered. On my parents most recent misadventure that forced them to come here, thank you obamacare. We waited for over an hour completing paperwork that should be in the electronic medical record that Barry also promised us, along with choice, cost savings, and keeping their doctor. Unfortunately in the hour that we have to complete the paper work they did NOT contact Mobap to get the Doppler lab completed on the EMR. They did not even call to have the lab emailed over. Long story short, I would not take my parent's dog here, let alone loved ones. But this is the best of bad choices on the obamacare hospital choices. read more

Absolutely horrific experience here in the ER. The nurse was completely clueless and made some mistakes. The doctor had a terrible attitude, was snooty and literally made us wait an hour in between updates, something as simple as making a phone call to another specialist took an hour and then once that was done we were totally ignored. At 3 AM you would think people could be a little more considerate. We could have left but instead were made to sit in the room for two hours. Avoid this place if possible. Would have gone to a totally different hospital if had known it would have been this bad. read more

Once you make it through the ER you are golden. Words can not describe how horrible it is to work your way through the maze of their ER. The staff was nice and doing their best to accommodate you when you are suffering. I presented with chest pains and vomiting. I was put in a chair, not a bed because they did not have one. Have you ever had chest pains and you sit upright, yeah they get worse. The staff was trying their best to make me comfortable. After four hours I finally got a bed. I was finally diagnosed with a bad appendix and was quickly on my way to surgery. The rest of my stay was amazing. My nurses truly cared for me, and I felt like I could recover without any more incidents. read more

I began my association with Belleville Memorial/Barnes Jewish from an appointment visit with the Kidney, Urology office in the Siteman Center in St. Louis. After being greeted by a pleasant receptionist, I met with Nurse Practitioner Susan who went above and beyond in addressing my need at the time. With preparations being made by Zach, Susan and one of her Doctor associates stayed beyond their normal work day to perform a cystoscopy and identified the blockage problem. The very next day, I received a call from an assistant, Kelly, that an appointment had been made for one week later, October 20, at the Belleville Memorial Hospital with Dr. Hogan to perform the surgery. Very soon after a call and a detailed protocol preceding the surgery (Covid test, quarantine time, medicine withdrawal schedule, etc) was received from Jane. I prepared for the upcoming surgery. On the morning of the surgery, when I arrived at Belleville Memorial, I was pleasantly greeted by the Charge Nurse Rhonda and taken to an outpatient surgery room. Nurse Becky arrived and asked me a hundred questions(not really, I exaggerated). Nurse Alecia arrived to do an EKG and put an IV in the back of my hand. Soon thereafter, I was visited by the head nurse of surgery, the Dr. And his assistant who were administering the anesthesia, and Dr. Hogan. Each explained in detail what I should expect. When I arrived in the surgery room, a very pleasant and professional group of nurses took over and everything went smoothly from there. I was released early afternoon and returned home. I have only commendations for the health care professionals at the Siteman Center in St Louis and the Belleville Memorial Hospital in Illinois that I encountered. Had outpatient surgery. Was kept overnight for observation after. Very nice staff at my pre-op, surgery unit and on my floor overnight. Kept me informed and comfortable. The only reason for not having the 5th star was that previously I had taken a friend to the ER on several occasions. As in other reviews I too was unimpressed by the care that he received in ER. So avoid the ER if possible. Everything else was first rate. read more

I delivered my first child at Memorial hospital in Beleville in March of this year, and the experience couldn't have gone any better. I am an obsessive researcher so naturally I came in with a long list of dos and donts, as well as a ton of questions for every time they needed to check on me, give me meds, or anything really. The level of patience they had with me easily rivaled Mother Theresa, haha. They were knowledgeable and explained everything well, and made me feel comfortable and confident that I was in good hands. They let me take half doses of medications so that I could be comfortable with the idea of it, they let me walk around and change position during pre-labor, and they gave me popsicles to eat and stay hydrated. I gradually let go of the need to skeptically know and be involved in everything and instead trusted their suggestions and decisions, which made everything less stressful for me. Aside from being knowledgeable and good at the medical side of things, I was astounded at how significantly emphasized service seemed to be by them. Instead of merely administering meds and checking my and the baby's vitals and things, they made sure My family and I were comfortable and attended to. Small things like providing pillows or water, and answering all of our questions. They always greeted us with smiles and received our requests with grace. I'm not sure how else to articulate that, just understand that everything they did was done with an air of service. I really appreciated that. They truly took care of me and my family. Furthermore, they were gentle but quick. The epidural did not hurt at all, and before that they gave me Stadol, which I would highly recommend. It was wonderful. They worked together with my doctors at Grace Women's Healthcare, which made me feel comfortable as well. If you are considering delivering at Memorial, I would highly suggest you go with them. I'd also suggest you take a tour and hear about all of their options. What they explain to you in the tour isn't some sale at pitch that they don't actually do in practice. They really did everything they told me they would in the tour. I was very pleased. I am really grateful for them. My experience was so good that I don't want to jinx it by having another kid, haha! Leave well enough alone! Lol. But no really, they were wonderful and I wish I had the finances to send them all some really nice fancy gift, but this review will have to suffice for now. read more

zero stars for the emergency department only. Dad has had multiple terrible experiences here. Once he was brought by ambulance direct from the oncologists office and left to sit alone in a locked wheelchair which seems like it would be considered a restraint since he was too weak with his critical low hemoglobin to get out of the wheelchair....he couldn't find the locks. He felt like it was a restraint and his life was left in danger. On another visit, he waited 6 hours with a critical low hemoglobin to get blood drawn and a transfusion started. Five stars for the oncology department. The staff is always attentive, frequently asking if he needs anything and just chatting with him. They make him feel safe and welcome. He has been feeling better the last couple of weeks and actually says he misses his "friends" there. Great staff! read more

How about calling the Doctor and asking instead of the triage personnel coming out and saying in front of patients and family "Do you know anything about this (last name) guy? I don't have anything on him so what am I supposed to do? ER is FULL and you have one triage worker? Then another nurse got upset when the Pastor with his clergy badge ask if he could go back. My wife had wrote a review for me but it was removed because it wasn't considered " first hand experience" so here I am to write my bizarre ordeal with Memorial Hospital. I hate to give 1 star quite honestly but unfortunately I have to. My mom was admitted to the ICU. I left her room to allow another sibling to spend some time alone with her. I went to the visitor's lounge down the hall and fell asleep and was abruptly awoken to security yelling at me to stand up. Two security guards and one had his gun drawn pointing at me. I was sleeping and absolutely no threat whatsoever! It was an accident that I had fallen asleep by the way. Not that I should really have to explain that. My mother was dying and I happened to briefly doze off. A gun being drawn on me is the strangest thing that has ever happened to me in my life! At such an emotional time I had to experience that type of interaction with memorial staff. I was in complete shock and I literally feared for my life! The other security guard saw my fear I assume was trying to explain their behavior away with people off the streets come in here etc. Well that should be the question that is asked for example "are u visiting someone here" not guns drawn and screaming and then begin to ask questions. I was immediately compliant and the security continued to scream at me. I have never made a formal complaint to a patient advocate because there is nothing that can take back the fear I still replay in my head. At a time that was so precious, the last days of my moms life and that is what I have to remember. There is such a lack of empathy at this hospital because to top that bizarre frightening situation off there were several nurses that were flat out rude basically every interaction. One doctor ONE was kind. Strange and completely unethical behavior for ANY hospital employees especially for the staff in the ICU.! Perhaps first some ethics training courses and then a whole overhaul of the security team if that is how they are trained to behave. My family will never again step foot in that hospital! One could be shot for falling asleep!!! read more
