I haven't visited in quite a while, I've cut my hair, changed my style. Did a walk in for a wash and blow-dry on a Friday morning and there was only 1 client ahead of me. The shampoo service was good. My only recommendation would be to teach the shampoo staff how to properly detangle natural hair. Otherwise he was kind and very attentive. My blow-dry service began with a woman who didn't speak much English so she couldn't say much to me. I didn't care for the fact that she picked up a hair clip off of the floor across the room and was going to use it on my hair until the shampoo guy stopped her and told her not to do that in their native language. That's the only reason for the missing star in this review. NaNa completed the blow-dry and styled my hair. I was happy with her service and conversation throughout. Overall the vibe was good and I will absolutely return. NaNa informed me that she works alone most days and an appointment is preferred. read more

Nana tells him to wash it first then detangle. As he's washing her hair, I hold my daughters hand to comfort her because she's has slight sensory issues with her scalp (i.e. tenderheaded) and of course doesn't know this man to be in the back of the shop alone. She cries a little at first but overall it she was good. She was washed/conditioned and went under the steamer for a deep condition for about 15-20 minutes. After, that he begins to use a wide tooth comb to detangle her wet hair. Nana tells me to come get another comb from her to help him or else it will take too long. (RED FLAG) Nana finishes up with another customer and takes my daughter into her chair and I go to the back to have my hair washed/conditioned. I can hear one of my daughters but cannot make out which one was whining or crying. Nana comes to the wash bowl to get me and tells me I need to help her blow dry and detangle my daughters hair. (RED FLAG) I then am looking around at the brushes/combs/products and she has NOTHING we use at home and this is supposed to be a professional shop. She's combing/brushing and blowing out my daughters hair WITH NO PRODUCTS. (RED FLAG) My daughter is balling her eyes out and I finally tell Nana she needs 5 minutes to breathe before she has an anxiety attack. Nana says "Okay" and proceeds to still try to do my daughter's hair and says she has other customers then proceeds to go on rant about how she does "African American's people hair all the time." (RED FLAG) I do not even know why this came out of her mouth because we obviously would not have been there if we didn't think she was qualified to do our hair. Anyways, at this point, she's not respecting my wishes to give my daughter 5 minutes and keeps repeating how she has more customers coming in later and she needs to hurry up. I told her that's fine we will go. I put my wet hair in a pony tail and gathered our belongings to leave. My mom took the girls to the car. Nana proceeds to tell me she knows how to do this and that blah blah blah because she does African Americans peoples hair all the time, that she didn't know it was going to take her so long to do my daughters hair and admitted that I told her she had a lot of hair. I stepped up to the desk with my wallet in hand and asked her, "how much do you believe I owe you today with the work you've done". She then proceeds to calculate aloud what full payment should be; which was an insult to the least. I gave her some money to cover her the shampoo and conditioner she used on us and some of her water bill even though I still have soaked conditioner in my hair as I'm typing this!!! Oh and they do not do keratin treatments even though they advertise for it. She made a statement about it being a lot of money. (RED FLAG) Like, okayyyy what's your point?... Anyways, I should have left at the first RED FLAG or even the second. I do not recommend. read more

I had a bad experience recently at this salon due to sanitation issues. I watched Nana scrub dandruff out of a clients hair with a comb and once it was my turn to get my hair done, she proceeded to use that same comb on my hair. Nana did not sanitize the comb first or seat after the client before me left. I'm ashamed and will not be going back!! read more

WOW! STAY AWAY! STAY FAR AWAY! Actually I'd ask if they even have an education or license to cut hair. The woman def doesn't. My daughter wanted about 2 inches off her hair. She did a tiny trim, I said no. She trimmed again, I said Nope! Then she gets her husband and after explaining everything over again. He cuts straight across and that's it. A decent go to place when I don't feel like doing my own hair or traveling to my other stylist. Nana will get your hair straight and have you in and out fairly quick. Feel like their sanitizing process of the tools between clients needs some work. read more

This is the only place I go to get my hair done. Every time I go they do a great job. I am mixed race and have thick hair that a lot of people cannot do. Ledo there always does a good job. Plus I never wait, they get me out very quickly, and the price is very inexpensive for what they do. I get a cellophane treatment every few months. It makes my hair shiny,healthy, and look amazing. I always get compliments for my hair. Everyone should get there cellophane treatment. read more

Place a negative symbol in front of that one star! I decided to calm down before I wrote this review because I refuse to use any explicit language. I had to get out all the curse words that rumbling in my head first. I was and still highly upset with this down right ratchet establishment. I am 44 years old and I have NEVER walked into a hair salon (that claims to do black hair) and been told that they don't do black shirt hair. Please spare me grace for the next comment: WHAT THE FREAK (please replace this word with the explicit word. I'm kid friendly). I honestly thought they were joking. I asked if they were joking. They said they were not. As I stand there in awe-I look around. No customer whatsoever. I felt like the salon could have been so much cleaner. I had to sit and wait for my husband to come back to get me so I sat. I noticed the foolery and ratchetness and actually glad I wasn't getting it done there. It's empty-clean this bish up. Let me not forget that their WELCOME SUCKED! My husband and I have been successful in business for the last 18 years, I know what customer service is and what it shouldn't be. Yet on this day, they find themselves having a lady like myself who has a pet peeve about greeting customers. I am 44 years old. You going to speak to me darn it. I'm not apart of this dumb butt tail culture who has lost all manners and respect. I'm old school. I did everything right with this. I called to make appointment, they said it wasn't necessary. YEAHHHHHHHH! I asked if they specialize in black hair and they said yes. YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHH Now I have never in my life think to ask, "do u do short hair?" Why would I ask that if they tell me they specialize in black hair? Why would I ask that? Black women hair is in many lengths. So when they said NO-I was so confused. Not friendly, not clean, and not business like to me. They didn't even care that they couldn't do it. I wear my hair like Halle berry so I just thought this would be simple. I have no chemicals in my hair. So I give one more chance and ask if they could at least line me up. If push came to shove, I would have put some water on my hair and watch it curl up and keep it moving--but I love linings. I wouldn't recommend this place to seek working at a black funeral home. That should give them some practice on black hair- short hair at that, without the risk of a black woman killing them. I'm in shock! I was quickly helped but they were confused on if I was the client who requested a relaxer the client who requested a silk press, I have been natural for two years since I cut my hair off because of heat damage and now I have to cut it off again because they damaged my hair and did no layering on my haircut just choppy blunt ends. I needed to start training my hair again been wearing it tied up. My daughter suggested this place as I hate 2-5 hour visits to salons. I was in and out of there under 2 hours but I had a deep conditioner. Overall they did what I needed. I would go back again. read more

Only go here when it is absolutely necessary, after my initial review about this place, I haven't been to Mena's in quite some time. That is until yesterday. I went to get a deep conditioner and "style" and the first portion of the service was fine, when I came in they were just finishing with a client. So it was just me. The guy that washed my hair was new and initially he was friendly enough, but there was something off about his actions. Like while washing my hair sometimes they direct which way they need your head to move, so for instance if they start to lift your head up you will raise your head so they can wash your nape area. So I guess I read his signal wrong and I thought he was motioning me to raise my head a bit. So I did and this man grabbed my hair and sternly held it down. Almost in a abusive way, which I did not appreciate at all. After the wash the man takes a towel and just sucks all the moisture from the wash and deep conditioner out of my hair. Cotton towels can be very drying to the hair, and Mena always uses cotton towels, that's not the problem. I know they use cotton towel but after a wash they usually lightly wrap the towel around my hair and then proceed to blow dry it. Obviously blow drying in itself is SUPER drying to the hair, but my hair usually has some moisture from the wash to help with the blow drying process. But not this time! The man took the towel and utilized it like it was a damn brush. And then he squeezed the hell out of my hair with that damn town. And as you can suspect my hair was already dry BEFORE he even blow dried it. Then dumbo put me back in the chair and proceeded to comb through my hair with a comb. Like my hair is already dry I don't need you ripping it out with a comb. I let this happen for a few minutes but when it was starting to get excessive, I shew his hand away from my hair stood up and just walked to the blow drying portion. Where a different guy finished my hair. I'm sure I offended the wash guy but who cares? He was literally insane. My last complaint is that in the middle of my hair getting curled, I wasn't even halfway done the receptionist lady walks up to me with her palm outstretched and asked will I be paying cash or credit. I answered credit and she asked to see my card. She told me it would be $70 and then she charged me. Lol I paid before the outcome of my hair. I don't know what the hell has gotten into them since my last time there, but they were rude and demanding. And I will probably never step foot inside there again. Stray from this place. For not!!!! when a client asks for their ends to be trimmed and to make sure you cut all the split hairs, they don't want you asking them ever hair strand "is this ok?" do you know what a split end look like? obviously not if i have to review each strand before you cut it... tried it twice like elmo said... no thanks! read more

I've been coming to Mena's as my suburban salon of choice off and on for years. Usually, I'm in an out with no problems. I came on a Sunday afternoon was done in 43 minutes! They accept credit cards, and have good hours. Highly recommend for a simple wash and blow dry with flat iron style. read more

Like one other reviewer said this is for special occasions not a regular salon to get your hair done because of the damage the heat will do. I was told by another beautician that they take the "guts" out of the dryer which is why they can get it so straight. Like another reviewer said, I too have had my hair shampood to where it was badly tangled and hurt really bad when trying to comb it out. I do love the outcome of my hair but I know that if I wanted my hair to stay healthy this is not the salon to go to once a week or once a month. This is a once or twice a year salon. read more

Horrible service, Leeda the guy who's in the first chair is disrespectful and highly unprofessional. He colored my hair and my gray was still showing he said he's fix it, he never did...he put a gloss in my hair that was the wrong color he said he's fix it, he never did. I contacted the owner of Mena's in Lansing he wanted me to come all the way out to Lansing so he could see my hair no promises of reconcile...unbelievable!!! Horrible experience! I have came here a few times with no trouble. But, I let a different person wash and condition my hair and by the end of it all, it was so tangled and matted that it was so painful to blow dry! I lost so much hair from the ordeal. I can't even run my hands through my hair! I'll have to go home and re wash it and do it myself. Never again. read more

Some of the worst customer service I've ever seen in my life. My regular stylist is out of town, I would have held out, but he's been gone for almost 3 months. I got an email flyer saying they're having a sale, so I head in just for a quick wash, style and trim. They try to up-charge me for everything!!! I had to pull up my email and show them their own flyer!!! the guy (Walle) was super rude and extra rough doing my hair. Burned me with the blow dryer multiple times and I swear he tried to rip my hair off my head while he was combing it. BEWARE, if you dare go to this place, avoid that stylist like the plague!!!!
