Aptly decorated with Japanese theme with cozy and warm seating arrangements, we were absolutely blown away by their fast service and refreshing Nigiri's and delicious appetizers. I went on a dinner date with no reservations. Luckily there was no waiting list so we got seated quickly. We started with some drinks, spicy garlic edamame, and Gyozas! Next we got the Spinach salad thing with couple of Nigiri's. Of all the items the edamame was the only item we didn't care for as it was a little bit on the sweeter side. Man the seared Macarel and Tuna Nigiri was too good. It just melted in our mouth. Trust me the seafood was FRESH. No joke! The spinach salad thing was a refreshing item something we had never had before. It tasted like some type of Kimchi with easy on fermentation! The service was fast and welcoming! Our server the young lad took really good care of us. Took his time to explain the menu and help us! Definitely going back again. There's no reason why we wouldn't. Bartender was kind of in her own little world before it even got busy. She was just chatting with a friend at the end of the bar so I didn't bother to order more of anything. Then tried taking my food away to give it to a new couple who sat down next to us. I told her no and it's our food and she's like no. Then she realized when they told her they didn't order that and they got their food already. She did say sorry but she just was out of it and not on top of things. As more people started to come in and actually get busy I figured she would be too overwhelmed to provide with good service so we left.

However, what really ruined the occasion was how the restaurant handled the birthday cake. When it was time to bring out the cake that we had brought with us, our table was still covered with dirty and empty plates from dinner. Instead of clearing the table and preparing for the celebration, the staff simply placed the cake on the table and walked away. We then had to flag someone down to ask for a knife so we could cut the cake. We also needed clean plates and forks, but instead of providing them, the staff brought us small plastic takeout containers and suggested that we serve the cake in those boxes. At that point, I was genuinely upset. We asked them to repackage the cake, took it with us, and ended up celebrating elsewhere. For a restaurant that regularly hosts birthday celebrations, this level of service was surprising and unacceptable. In most restaurants, staff help make the occasion special by clearing the table, providing plates and utensils, and assisting with serving the cake. None of that happened here. We've celebrated several birthdays at Nara over the years because it was our son's favorite restaurant, but after this experience, we won't be returning.

I feel as if I got taken for and bilked for this meal. The ginger salad is so-so, dressing is too heavy on the carrot, not enough ginger. The miso soup is good. The UofM roll isn't my favorite. The cali hand roll isn't too bad. The Cali roll is decent, avocado is a bit brown. The Cali hand rolls were good.
