I got lost seeking out Sushi Samurai due to road construction and unexpectedly toured what I assumed to be Orchard Lake. I turned myself around and located the restaurant in a small strip mall, along with other small, mom-and-pop businesses. Past lunch, guests were finishing up. I had already checked the menu the day prior, so I knew what I wanted. Unfortunately, the online menu is outdated; some items I had my eye on were no longer available. I had the calamari tempura instead of the spicy tuna salad, and had also ordered the Red Dragon (instead of the Saba Dong Roll) and Scorpion Rolls. A few other sashimi pieces rounded out the meal. The calamari tempura included thick calamari and thinly sliced vegetables in a thin coating. The Scorpion Roll was flavorful with texturally interesting, crunchy from the soft shell crab and creamy from the avocado. The eel sauce was delicious. By contrast, the Red Dragon Roll was rather bland. The saba sashimi was incredible, the tamago was more savory than sweet, but the yellowtail was also bland and unenjoyable. Service was fine. Also to note: The restaurant displayed a wondrous Lego collection. Haven't been here in a decade. Decided to come back and try it -- as it was convenient and I felt like sushi. For what it is, it's very good. The service was excellent, the ambiance decent and a menu with a lot of variety. We started with the spicy crab salad and the cucumber salad. Both fresh and tasty. I had the small sushi plate and my husband got the chicken teriyaki. He enjoyed his and was happy that he could upgrade to brown rice. The fish on the nigiri was fresh. The tuna rolls pretty average. We arrived during dinner rush and expected a wait, but were sat promptly by a friendly waitress. We were given a menu and water upon sitting down in the little comfy booth. We ordered the Miso Soup to start, the Philadelphia Roll, Samurai Crunch Roll and the Spicy Salmon Roll. The miso soup was hot and delicious, served alongside a complimentary cucumber salad. The rolls were good, but colder than we would've liked. The standout was The Philadelphia Roll, with melt-in-your-mouth salmon happily marrying the cucumber and cream cheese. I prefer fresh salmon rather than smoked salmon in my Philly, so my tastebuds were delighted! Overall a great experience, and will be back for more. read more

This is definitely one of the best sushi places around the metro Detroit area. I would give it a solid place in the top 3 places for sushi. Growing up in Seattle gives me a big appetite for fresh fish and this place is amazing. I really appreciate that they usually seem stocked with toro or belly tuna which I liken it to sushi butter. My family has frequent this restaurant since opening through expansion. I thought only my immediate family had gotten sick after eating here. Then my mom shared that she had gotten ill as well from eating at Sushi Samurai on a different date, time, and menu item. Then my sister and niece explained that they stop coming for the same reason. I came back after a few months to see if maybe it was just coincidental; only to find a dirty kitchen and bathooms. Hopefully they read this review. I rarely get a taste for sushi, but was craving it, so, based on the reviews, I went to Sushi Samurai. I was sorely disappointed. I ordered carryout and the service was fast. I ordered five different rolls, and, honestly, none of them were good. Despite having various different rolls they all tasted the same, and were all too loosely rolled. The seaweed was flimsy and wet, the fish was wet, and there was rice on three sides of every roll. After having a taste for something (getting my mouth watering for it), I can say that I am very disappointed. read more

This place is nothing exciting in terms of sushi. I've been here a few times and have never really been WOWed by anything but maybe that's just because we get sushi. When you dine here you'll see tons of Korean/Japanese fusion dishes coming out but I've never tried those. As far as sushi, everything kind of tastes the same. They have a good roll that has super thinly sliced lemon on top and capers with smoked salmon. If you're on the "west side" though I'd suggest you go to Kabukki instead. This is a review based purely on takeout. The food is always ready on time, and I really enjoy every roll I've tried. My personal favorites are the red dragon and the yum yum roll. The seaweed salad is good but it seems like it comes frozen and gets thawed out. On one occasion I did notice it was a little frosty. The quality of the food is definitely better than other places I have been to, and that is where the four stars comes from. The service here is ok, they don't go out of their way for the customers and it seems like they just want it to be over with. This is pretty much the kind of service I have come to expect when coming to a place like this, but the food is definitely worth it. This time I came with a group of 5 women for lunch. The waitress wasn't writing down our order and one of the woman I was with pointed it out since a few members of our group were very picky eaters. (Low and behold she forgot that persons salad lol.) Three of us ordered the yaki udon with chicken and the other two split a bunch of sushi rolls. I love the yaki udon from here, I drive all the way out here because I crave it sometimes. Its hard to describe why its so good but it just tastes amazing and is very satisfying. The sushi looked really good and they got everything right. One thing I like that they'll do for you if you ask is put the spicy mayo on the inside of the sushi roll. This place has really gone down hill since the owners got convicted for tax evasion. My daughter and I went there for sushi. Place was half empty. We ordered and then we sat for over 40 minutes. Six tables that were seated after us got their food while we sat wondering if we were forgotten. I tried waving down one of their waitresses, but they just ignored me, so we just ended up leaving the place and going a couple miles away to a better sushi place.
