While the information on the Jury summons seemed comprehensive, I still had so many questions. Can I bring in my laptop and do any work (are there any desks). ANSWER - YES - to both. How does the first day of Jury Selection actually work? How early should I arrive? Prior Yelp reviews talk about long lines going around the building. I decided to arrive 20 minutes before my check-in time The parking is at the front of the building - and according to the info provided we are advised to walk to the back for the dedicated Juror entrance - which is quite some distance based on Google Maps view. On arriving I didn't see anyone heading around to the back - everyone was entering at the front entrance. I decided to go there instead of walking around the back. On entering, I asked the security chap at the scanners if it was OK for Jurors to enter here and he said "yes - of course". So... now we know. You CAN enter at the front. After security, there is a staircase to the left with a sign saying "Juror Assembly" (or something like that) - so I went down. My laptop bag went through the scanner without any issue. No need to pull anything out as we do at an airport. I checked in immediately (no line) using some very large touch-screen kiosk (there are TWO) - I just manually entered my Juror ID and clicked proceed / confirmed my details came up and clicked the "yes that is me" button. Then I just entered the large juror area - lots of seats - including some workstation kiosks where many had already setup their laptops. A few were still open so I just setup and got to work. Still not quite sure what would happen next. The main waiting area had many TV's scattered around on the walls - tuned to some "home building" channel. The audio was quite loud - but not too loud. I did regret not bringing along a set of headphones to listen to my own music. There is a quiet room (no TV's) and also a large patio area out the back if you want a more quiet experience. Shortly after the check-in time the Juror check in "Manager" (Lucy) made some announcements and let us know how the day might go. She was both entertaining and informative. On this day we were to wait in the assembly area until the Judges / Courtrooms called down with a need for Jurors. We MIGHT NOT even be needed. But - by law - they needed a potential jury pool. There were just 87 of us there today. Apparently there can be up to 300. We were told we might not hear anything until close to lunch time (12pm-1:30pm) - but if there is a chance we may be dismissed early we may need to wait a little after 12pm. Turns out we were not needed - so the final "roll call" was conducted at 12:05pm when all 87 had to call out "Here!" after hearing our name. Only one person went temporarily missing. They had fallen asleep out on the patio area and did not hear the roll call (despite speakers out there). One of the other jurors went out to find them. If they had not responded we were informed they would have to attend Jury Duty again. After the roll call was completed - we were all dismissed. Although we did not even go up to a courtroom - just being available for the process was enough to complete our Jury Duty requirement. Hopefully, my summary here is useful to others

The security are friendly and helpful. The employees here were all very friendly. The traffic department was closed on the day we went which was the due date but the lady working in a different department. Said she noted the account and that we could come back on Tuesday with no penalty. We came back to take care of the ticket and the young lady who helped us. Helped us to set up a trail date to clear the ticket as it was a fix it ticket. To our surprise it wasn't that bad. It's just that people get tickets and hate it lol So no wonder for the bad reviews but it's not the courts fault. So they get 5 star's for working fast, being friendly, and helpful.

There's plenty of signs telling jurors where to park. I can't believe how many people parked in the wrong place and had to move their car. The summons has the lot address, everyone has a phone. Google it if you're not sure. I was able to check in outside online while waiting for the doors to open. A Sheriff instructed everyone to remove anything metal from their body before going through the metal detector. So many people didn't and this held up the line a bit. These are probably the same people that parked in the wrong lot. Once in the Juror room on the 3rd floor I took a Juror badge and took a seat. They had goodie bags, bottle water, coffee, and pastries since it was Jurors Appreciation Week. Before the orientation videos several judges look time from their courtroom to come to the jury assembly room to show their appreciation. Senator Umberg was also there. It was nice to see all these people. It was a slow day. Not many courtrooms needed jurors. My name wasn't called. Many of us were let go earlier than expected.

Walked out with my official "you did your civic duty" receipt and a 12-month pass to freedom. The courthouse café was okay. You put your stuff on the conveyor belt and walk through and get wanded if they detect metal. You are then scanned in before you enter a big open airy room with lots of seating. I found a padded chair and sat and waited. They keep you pretty informed throughout the process. We had to watch 4 videos. There were forms to fill out if you couldn't serve due to financial hardship, caregiving etc. after all of that is done you wait. There are bathrooms, coffee vending and regular vending machines. They called the names of the jurors who got picked and at least half the room left (it was pretty full). The rest of us were on standby and got to leave by noon because the other cases didn't need us. All in all, it was a pretty easy experience. The building is nice inside and it flowed smoothly. The participants were very diverse. And the staff was mostly friendly.

There are so many inefficiencies in the system. I don't think the government system takes feedback or makes process improvements, but hopefully this review helps someone with their Jury Duty experience. At this courthouse, you receive a summons and you actually have to CALL 5pm the day prior to check if you need to physically come in. Considering they made me go online and fill in all this stuff, why can't I check some status online? If you have to report in person, the dress code is business casual. Although I feel like a lot of people were way more casual casual and they weren't sent home to change like the threat on the phone. In the room where the potential jurors meet, we were told to listen to a video but the TVs were unevenly distributed and the audio was awful. Then when we were suppose to find ourselves on these lists, the names were written in a thin white font that was hard to read. A lot of do this and wait, do this and wait. During one of my breaks I went to the restroom on first floor and it really needs renovations. No automated/sensors. In the women's bathroom on 1st 2 out of 4 sinks were broken. Then I made the mistake of getting a snack at the café inside the courthouse. Since they have no competition and they're the only option, they get to be slow inefficient and burn your food... in my case burnt my food twice. It was also so hectic as they didn't take names down, they just called out the type of order, so if multiple people ordered the same thing they all go up and look confused. I waited for ever for them to call me back saying they forgot what I ordered... Then it was burnt. I came back... They remade it... Burnt again. Pointless. I didn't have time to deal with them a third time. On a more positive note, this is the furthest I made it along in the jury selection process. I won't give any detail to maintain the confidentiality but I can say they ask questions to make sure there are no conflict of interest or strong biases that would negatively affect either parties. It was nice to see the justice system at work. Obviously the Jury Duty experience is a civic duty, but the courthouse really need some renovations to make the jury experience less awful.

It's a comfortable experience both through the hallways and in the courtrooms. Banning Courthouse has stairs, an elevator and a few ramps for a variety of visitors. A juror assembly room is also available where large groups of jurors gather before being called for jury selection. The juror assembly room has limited vending machines and a fridge for your convenience. The courtroom gallery seats are a little uncomfortable but everything else was fine. Security is a bit rude at times but once they get to know you they cool off and are a little more cordial. Note: If you're here for jury duty and need a slip each day you're here, go down to the juror assembly desk and the folks there will give you an attendance certification.
