Unfortunately, I was unable to apply for a Medicare number online (an otherwise very easy thing to do) and was instructed to call the main number for Social Security Administration. After a long wait, I was then told I needed to go into my local SS office which is in Hemet. I first called this office directly as I am at a distance, to double-check about the need to come in and to see if there was anything I needed to bring with me. I called and the gentleman at the Hemet office said to come in any time 9AM-4PM with just my ID. I made the 40 minute drive and was initially thrilled to discover that there weren't many people waiting inside. The officer at the door directed me to the check-in window where I waited about 15-20 minutes. So far so good! Right in front of me was an elderly woman wheeling a gigantic oxygen tank and having problems just getting to the window. As she explained her problem, it was obvious that this was not the first time she had come in to that office to deal with it. I felt so sorry for her being told she needed to come back again the next morning because the clerk who could help her wasn't in. My husband was able to get his number online in about 5 minutes, so my turn comes and I'm confident this will be easy. My first issue in general is that the clerk asked for my SSN. As there were many people nearby who could probably hear me, I say it softly. She couldn't hear me clearly through the glass and asked me to repeat. So much for privacy issues... Anyway, I explain why I am there and am told there is only one person in their office who can do this, she isn't in, AND "she doesn't work much"! I'm told I need to make an appointment 2 months out! What?! I tell the clerk that I actually called this very office before coming in and spoke to another clerk who is probably within the sound of my voice right here, and he told me to come in anytime! How could he not know that the ONE person who can help me (I told him exactly what I needed) is not in and only deals with people through appointments? She simply shrugged her shoulders and said they're really busy. Note: as you can see from my pictures, most of the service windows were empty. Hmmm, I think I now understand why the office is nearly empty! Once you finally get up to one of the few manned windows, you're told you need to make an appointment or come back when that one magical person is actually working. The only positive in this review is that there is lots of parking. But this office gets a big ZERO for communication, lack of privacy in having to speak your SSN, and customer service.

Ask the Community - Social Security

Does anyone out there have a local telephone number for the Social Security office located in Hemet California?

It's (800) 772-1213. Walking in is the best way. By phone, you will listen to repetitive tunes for a long time. Might as well wait for Jesus to come.

How do I get a copy of my pension award letter?

I believe you have to go in for that. The first line next to appointments, when your called up just tell the window attendant that you need an award letter. Make sure you have ID and social security card. They should print it out. If you have an… Read more

LOL But the USPS has been cutting back and letting attrition do its thing on staff reductions. Same here. I felt bad for the one postal employee on duty, trying to help customers yesterday. Currently, they are telling us that it has been vandalized. I just saw the mailman drive through the neighborhood and then I got a notification that the package I am waiting for has been delivered. I go to the box and there is nothing there. Usually, when this happens I have to go to the post office the following day and sit in line for sometimes over an hour after working all day long to get mail that could have been delivered by the carrier with my package that literally drove right past my house the day before. Why are we being told that our box has been vandalized when the videos show the only ones opening the back of the box are the postal service and the only ones opening the front of the box are residents???? Is it shadyness, laziness, or just plain unorganization? Who knows, but I am f*%#ing over it!!!! This is by far the worst post office I have ever dealt with!

I can't speak to any of the other resources as I haven't used them. However, the way the staff treat the people in the library leaves a lot to be desired, hence my 2-star review. Although the publicly posted hours state they close at 6 pm, beginning at 5:30 pm, there is an aggressive push to get everyone out of the library, with constant announcements over the loudspeaker, security guard patrolling the study areas, and the librarians also coming around and reminding everyone to leave by 5:45 pm. At 5:35 pm, I was told that if I didn't leave by 5:45 pm I would be locked in the library with my child overnight. I stated the library closes at 6 pm, and we will be gone well before that time. At 5:55 pm, as we were leaving, the security guard and the librarian came over to tell us we were there past closing. They definitely scared my child into thinking that would happen. Woof.
