Its the energy and connoisseur artisanship that you can feel not just see. Naomi chan, Taylor, Akiko san: They are just a passionate artists that is definitely world quality in terms of their service, technique and execution of the technique. I have had my hair done from many of the most famous places in Seoul, South Korea, L.A., and Tokyo, Japan. Even in those countries its hard to really meet someone who is delicate but elegant in way they treat their clients with the service and level of quality. That said, when I first started seeing Taylor, I didn't know the difference between a taper and a fade, I had never heard of texturizing, and the clipper numbers meant nothing to me. Taylor made it easy to bridge that gap. I could describe what I thought I wanted, and she translated it into technical terms and a precise cut. Thanks to Taylor, I've finally found a hairstyle that I genuinely like. Another one of Taylor's standout qualities is her excellent taste. She always delivers when I want to refine my style or experiment with something new. She's very knowledgeable about styling products and always has great recommendations. I was a bit overdue for a haircut but wanted to make an appointment at a barber fairly near to my workplace. So, rescheduled my hours for Tuesday and went to Men's Groooming Salon Sky in Kakaako. Offering a discounted haircut pricing ($30) and fitting into the afternoon time frame that I was looking for on Tuesday; I booked an appointment with Junior Stylist Darcy. Professional, detailed, and personable...Darcy provided an excellent haircut and shampoo...and overall experience. I am usually not too relaxed at any establishment that I patronize for the first time, but at the end of the one hour session, I was fairly relaxed. Motorized chair made me feel like I was at the dentist initially... but the pre-cut shampoo was relaxing. Darcy has been in training here since 2019. They have strict standards as one would expect from a Japanese run business. She was excellent. Also, she is qualified to provide facial services. Salon is very spacious. The entrance faces the reception desk and there are a few chairs if you are waiting: for a stylist or someone who is getting a cut. Off to the right are the chairs...about four. Vintage display items contrast with the clean, modern interior. They are on 665 Halekauwila St., adjacent to Up Roll Cafe. Metered street parking is available but there are one hour time constraints at nearby stalls and expect a haircut to take 60 to 75 minutes. There are parking garages at SALT and Down to Earth. Yuichi is a magician with the scissors! My first experience with him was after going 13 full months without cutting my hair due to COVID. Boy I was pleased with what he had done with my hair. I gave him a vision and he met it with precision. The second time around, I gave him my wife's feedback and he again met my hair vision spot on. I'll note he's more of a traditional barber who leans more on scissors and shears over using electric clippers so if you're looking for the more modern buzz cuts he may not be your man but I believe he still provides the service. In addition to cutting your hair, he washes your hair with shampoo before and after the cut. The best part is that he massages your head while shampooing and then a nice neck massage afterwards to loosen up the tension. Booking an appointment was easy through their website and the square app. They send you emails and text messages to remind you of your appointment which is convenient. In terms of parking, there is a paid parking garage or meter parking on the street. If you're lucky you can find unpaid street parking just farther out. I believe this is only the second I have ever recorded but after my experience at Sky with Yuichi I had to take the time to offer my highest recommendation (for whatever thats worth). The haircut and service I received was fantastic. Being as I was just visiting Hawaii I was a little hesitant to get my hair cut by someone new but I can honestly say it is one of the best I have ever received. Yuichi is an absolute pro all I had to do was show a couple styles I was interested and he transformed my idea to reality. He is easy to talk to and has an incredible attention to detail. Everyone at Sky was first class and made the whole experience worthwhile. There is a reason this place has 5 stars and it deserves every one. Living in LA I can be pretty particular about haircuts and we have no shortage of places to go. Sky sits right at the top with the best you could hope to find. I came here after getting super angry at the haircut I had literally hours before. I was upset and I was in need of an emergency fix up so I didn't look like a fool. I called Salon Sky explaining my situation and they were able to get me a same day appointment! Let's start with the general area of the establishment. Parking is very easy to find. Area is nice; not crowded like some other parts of town. The experience - I've never considered a haircut an "experience" before. However, this was an experience. I can't explain how satisfied I am. A shampoo before AND after your haircut - the attention to detail - the courteousness and respect you receive - all of it was just so pleasant. Akiko, I'll be scheduling another appointment very soon! Next time I'll order the full service for sure! Some might think the cost is high. After so many years of barbers and friends cutting my hair, it was time to go pro...I suggest the Men's Grooming Course, a real value at $60 (first timers can get the $50 introductory special if it is still offered). Expect a professional haircut, shampoo, head massage, plus shoulders, too. A straight razor shave after a hot towel wrap leaves you clean and smooth. Then while all of this is taking place, you get a hand massage, fingernail clipping and even a buff and (manly) polish with clearcoat. I was so relaxed and well taken care off that I was prepared to take a nap! But instead I was served iced green tea and and led to a couch to review my services and pay the bill. I took my 7 year old son to the salon, because we live on maui where barber salons does not accept younger guests than 10. I modified the appointment and I was warned that a junior will be the hairdresser if I don't mind. I am always happy with youngs so I said ok. And I was pretty sure that you cannot make a mistake in a good salon even with juniors. The junior was an older lady. I explained what we want, I showed her pictures about his previous haircut. We and he wanted to have short hair at lower parts and he tries to grow the upper parts. A kind of badass guy is my son who takes his hair really serious. He can never stay still only in barber shops. The lady cut a 'good boy' hair, but the worst is that she cut his nice long upper hair with more than an inch. Probably she cut the half of the size. Sky Men Grooming Salon is located on the ground floor, retail space of Halekauwila Place, an affordable rental located in the heart of Kakaako, is a new salon catering to men in Hawaii. I live and work nearby, so have been curious to try this place out. Given that my wife knows about the quality and service by Japanese salons, I knew I had to try this place once I heard the prices. According to staff, it is part of a Japanese salon, with 17 locations in Tokyo. This is the first location outside of Japan and boy, did they hit it out of the park. Has an modern, urban decor with exposed pipes and ducts in the roof, brick wall, and lots of metal. This is mixed with dark wood, marble and beautiful leather barber chairs, that fully recline (both back and legs). For a flat rate of $60 (not including tax or tip), you get a one hour all inclusive treatment which includes a shampoo with scalp massage, professional cut (modern or classic styles), manicure with clipping with buffing, hand massage, neck massage, hot towel and steam to exfoliate your hair follicles, straight edge razor shave, and any trimming of eyebrows (if you want). I was fortunate to have Akiko, who is the general manager, from Tokyo (although originally from Hokkaido). All the stylist are from Japan, while the cosmetologist and assistants are local (although most were born in Japan). The stylist really know their stuff and do high quality work. I was very pleased with everything and will be returning. I have been to men's oriented salon in Honolulu such as Mojo, as well as Hair M in Portland, and I can say that for the services provided at the price, Sky should be leading next year's Honolulu Magazine's "Best Men's Indulgence". First time here I ordered the men's grooming standard $75. It's worth every penny. I'm a huge fan of the shampoo scalp massage ended with a hot lemongrass towel. I had been going to see the same barber in Long Beach for such a long time that I knew finding the right spot in Hawaii would be important to me to start feeling at home here. This is truly a hidden gem for men who are seeking a comfortable groom with the most meticulous precision. They had just opened less than 3 months ago according to his barber, and we had just came back from a 2 week long vacation. The bf was in need of a haircut, and close shave after growing out his beard. Thankfully to other fellow Yelpers, this place offered everything he would like in a haircut and more. We called and they had an opening right away. We were welcomed by a very welcoming, hospitable, and friendly Japanese staff at the front. His barber had just moved from Tokyo and was still learning Japanese, but had the most genuine customer service. For $60 (before tax and tip), they included shampoo (x2 before and after), hot towel service (right when they seated him), haircut, a manicure (excellently cleaned during the haircut), and a close, straight razor shave. Their aftershave smells pleasantly fresh, and not too strong. They also offered to shape and trim his eyebrows which he only had trimmed. As I waited (1 hour total expectancy), they mentioned they have facials/massages services for women (and men), which they offered along with some tea and a hot towel as I waited for my man getting pampered. There were limited street parking so we parked in the public parking garage in the building where the salon is located, which costed us only $1.50 (Sunday) for an hour and a half.
