I drive Uber on the weekends and picked up a guy just coming to Hawaii; little did I know he was moving here to become a barber out here in Hawaii (he's been cutting hair for years on the mainland). We hit it off on our shared stories as service industry workers and I told him jokingly he paid me for the Uber ride so I'll pay him back by stopping by for a haircut. The barber's name is Ethan and he's now cut my hair a couple of times, as I now trust him to be my regular barber. I found FLACO's barbershop in December 2024. Simply the best! I moved back home from the mainland and needed to find a new barber. Mike is an excellent barber, also good with the blade. This review is long overdue! I've been getting my haircut at Flaco's since they opened up shop in Kaka'ako. At first I was a bit hesitant because I already had a barber shop I'd frequent for years. I know you guys can relate to this! But Flaco's was super convenient and had a variety of hours that fit my schedule. Above all, Flaco's is a barber-owned shop! That's not something you see too often in town. After the first cut, I was committed. Flaco's was my new go-to barber shop and Barber Mike was my go-to barber! I wouldn't know how to explain what Barber Mike does differently but aside from feeling fresh after a fade, my hair would grow even and nicely weeks after. Aside from cutting hair, the whole crew is super chill and welcoming. I always enjoy my time catching up and BS'ing with Barber Mike and the crew. I usually don't care much about my haircuts. I get them because of work. I desperately needed a cut and i was on Apple Maps just searching barbershops this one stuck out and so I decided to go. I had to make an appointment for later that day which normally would be annoying but I completely understand. I have been cutting my own hair forever and it all because I never trusted the barber to listen to what I wanted. I needed to get an actual clean haircut for an event and came across flaco's. Most spots I found were experienced and the old school side combs and pidgeotto style cuts, which I wasn't looking for. Payton was my barber and definitely didn't disappoint. Told him what I liked and he also added in what he would recommend. I definitely had the sense that he wanted to make sure I was getting the haircut I would be happy with, and not just a haircut they wanted to give. I got a great hair cut from Mike who owns the place. The shop wasn't even open, but I took a chance and called and scheduled my haircut. It's a small place, but very nice, clean, and stylish. I got my haircut, beard (what little I have. I don't even know if you can call it a beard, it's like sporadic facial hair placement, but I digress) cleaned up, and bought two products, all cheaper than what I used to pay at other places. I set a time via text with mike the owner and main barber and got there right on time. He was on time and got me cleaned up. He also gave a hot towel and sat me back for a few minutes. My son is turning 14 this month. He has been growing his hair out for, liiterally, years. The best I could get him to compromise was a very light trim. Of course, I always encourage him to develop and experiment with his style choices and I respect his right to self expression. But TBH, there were a lot of days when I just wanted him to at the very least deep condition . Any way, when he told me recently that he was ready to get a haircut, I started looking for a barber. I initially was just going to take him to see my stylist (whom I love so much), but then thought it would be cool to take him to a legit Barber shop. I wanted to go to a locally owned business, for it to be a fun experience, and for him to feel like he has a trusted spot to drop in when he needs to get chopped up or change his style. I started pouring through reviews and social media pages. After making some phone calls and narrowing it down, I chose Flacos (obviously) based on my criteria. It looked laid back, but professional. When I called, the gentleman I spoke with was accommodating and friendly. They have online booking which i am WILD about It's easy to find an appointment and make changes if you need to ‍, which is great for me as a single mom with 3 kids who always need to be somewhere. The cancelation policy is fair and easy to understand. When the day finally came, I of course got a little mixed up with the one way streets and was stressing hard because I am a suburban driver and feel like I'm going to be the most annoying human on the road. This, I'm certain, will not be an issue for 99.99% of people. I just don't drive in town that often in recent years. I called to give them a heads up that I'd be a few minutes late and I'm sure they thought I was a lunatic having a nervous breakdown, but Mike was super chill and reassured me that he was patiently waiting and not to worry. And....there is parking!! This is a HUGE bonus. The building is easily recognizable with designated parking spots. I was ready to drop the 5 stars based just on that Once we got inside, I was impressed with anesthetics. The use of space is fantastic and the decor is simple but definitely has a recognizable and unique vibe. Mike (Owner/actual Flaco) got Oliver (my son) sat down and we began the arduous task of getting him to decide exactly what he wanted. Mike took into consideration what Oliver's hair texture is, what he was visualizing in his mind for the end look, and how much time and skill would be involved the daily morning prep. He made some professional recommendations and Oliver agreed on a final look (miracles do exist). As Mike began working away, he was pleasantly conversational. He's an impressive young man and it's clear he cares about his craft and his clients. Oliver told me afterwards that he had fun listening to Mike and I talk and we should do a podcast . Now on to the reveal party, as I like to dramatically call it. I can't even adequately describe how HANDSOME Oliver looked. It was unreal how well the haircut fit his personality and his existing style. I had tears....he just looked so grown up. Best of all, you could tell that Oliver knew straight up that he was 1000% boosted lol. He couldn't stop smiling...it was the best part! Then....when I knew for sure it was equal to a blessed trinity....Oliver actually paid attention to Mike when he was showing him how to style it, and he wanted me to buy the pomade! I was shook . We left the shop feeling like there wasnot a thing that could have made it better. It was such a wonderful experience. Oliver has been styling his hair every morning, taking pride in his new look and his new-found confidence. I would recommend Flacos to anyone in need of a new barber whether they are just visiting the island or looking for a forever haircut home.
