Have been coming here for a bit over a year. Joy cut my hair all but one time. I've tried numerous other places on the island and have not been happy. Everyone here is really friendly, things run smooth, coffee available if you're waiting, place is clean, music is questionable, i've been happy with every haircut i've got here. I have to redo my review! This place was awesome!!! Best haircut experience I've had. Only one other place was up to this quality experience that was a spot in socal near Newport. This was the definition of a five star experience!! From start to finish! the phone call and awesome service from Tiffany helping set up my and my wife's appointments, the arrival greeting and welcome was great and the haircut was a great experience. I got Casey who was professional, caring, attentive and gave a great haircut, beard trim and massage. I recommend an appointment and be ready for an experience. The haircut was really good and professional. The beard trim was on point and really cleaned up some beard stragglers. The massage was awesome. Scalp face neck shoulder and arms. And finally a wash. Annoyed that my other review for j salon got removed bc it's technically for the same establishment but posting again here for visibility: hair was cut way too short :/. i had high hopes for phil's barber shop given the reviews. i showed them a picture and everything, but did not end up like the photo at all. i thought it might look better the next day after i had time to get over the initial shock, but i was wrong. it was still ugly as hell i contacted them later about possibly getting a refund because of how dissatisfied i was with the haircut. If you saw the result vs the picture i showed them, you would want a refund too. After they got back to me, i was told they aren't able to refund me but they offered a complimentary haircut. Definitely hesitant to go back given this first experience and needless to say, I am very disappointed. read more

I've been going to Phil's for a few years and typically get my haircut by Joe- who does an excellent job. On a Monday morning I needed a haircut and Joe is usually scheduled weeks out. I thought I would give Anthony a try as I have seen him at the shop and Joe had recommended his other barbers if he can't be scheduled, I asked for a mid drop fade, barely trim the top, leg it grow out as an undercut. Basically leave the top as is in the same shape as it's been growing out. Anthony cut off the back side of the undercut and gave me a completely different haircut/shape than what I asked. I noticed on his Instagram he gave me a haircut that he typically does and is probably more in his comfort zone. Two stars for Lack of communication and for not clarifying what the customer wants.There are barbers in Honolulu for half the price that will give you what you are looking for and not the haircut they feel comfortable doing. Nice guy but for 50+ dollars not at all at the appropriate level of professionalism. Beautiful shop. Very clean. Decided to leave this review because I had another not so great experience a previous time I went with a different barber other than Joe (that barber has since gone to a different shop). Because of COVID, they limit the number of people in the shop, so I would recommend booking an appointment in advance on their website. Booking is quick and painless. Phil's has an "old school" barber shop vibe with eclectic photos adorning the walls. Space is clean and inviting. COVID protocols are taken seriously by staff. For your haircut, I would highly recommend Jordan. Jordan consistently gives me a great fade and ensures that I am always happy with my cut. He is professional and you won't be disappointed. There is no barber shop in all the land that can top this one. 5 stars for overall cleanliness, for knowledgable staff and for attention to detail. From the moment you walk in the door you are transported to a time when there were no franchise hair salons, only your good old neighborhood barber whose purpose in life was to perfect his craft. All the fancy words aside, this was the best haircut I have ever gotten, and I didn't have to tell my barber (Hunter) every detail of what I wanted. I wanted to see if he was a true artisan, and I gave him free reign over the final look. All I told him was "skin fade" and "I wear my hair combed backward". After my long-time stylist decided to go to nursing school, I decided to try out Phil's Barber Shop at the recommendation of a friend. From the time I booked to the time I walked out the door, I felt something qualitatively different about my experience here. After booking my appointment online, I received a series of text messages confirming my date, time, and stylist and posing several simple (Y/N) health-related questions meant to minimize possible exposure to COVID by both staff and patrons. When I arrived, Natalie welcomed me in the outdoor seating area, briefly examined me, gently instructed me to sanitize my hands, and showed me to Jordan, my stylist for the day. I've been with the same stylist for years, so I didn't really know how to describe exactly how I wanted my hair. Jordan walked me through a number of options and, after some discussion, went to work. Jordan did not disappoint. The entire experience in the chair reminded me of an elevated, old school barber shop experience. By the time I was done, I had a haircut that I loved, and both my face and head tingled from the products, hot towel, and gentle massages. I've had long hair for about 7 years and finally made the decision to get my hair cut. Naturally I was nervous about who I was going to have cut my hair. I walked into Phil's Barber to find the owner Joe who greeted me. I had booked an appointment a few weeks out as his schedule was packed. I got real lucky with a last minute cancellation and returned just a short while after. He look his time to wash, wash and re-wash my hair before my cut. He took his time and knew exactly what I wanted without me knowing exactly what I wanted. He's a real artist. We shared stories about each other and after about an hour, I couldn't be more pleased with the results. I'm thrilled about my new hair and will definitely be going to for my regular visits. If you are looking for a clean, professional, modern, friendly, punctual place to get your hair done, there really isn't a better place. Heard about this place from a co worker. He had some nice haircuts every time. Well me and other co worker decided to give it a shot and check this place out. They are appointment only. It was cool that we can see who's available and open time slots online for whatever day they were open. That was a plus! So me and my worker made a appointment and went one early morning. We both had an appt with Jordan. He asked me how do you want your hair and what kind of style your trying to achieve. So I told him how I wanted it to kinda look like. He told me straight up"I got you" I was like oh s**t alright. So he was cutting my hair and chatting up a bit and then after when he was done I was like Holy F***! I've had to step back for a few weeks to let my anger simmer, and allow my review to be a bit more soft around the edges, insert face slashing here... I found Phil's walking by to go to Anaha. I loved the look and vibe of this place. I'm from L.A., I live here now. I've been on the hunt for someone to hook up and shape my big, full beard, that had been growing for seven months. I Had a shaping done in December back home, but needed a touch up. I made an appointment at Phil's, and they were able to see me that day, rad. I asked if they trim and shape beards, of course the answer was yes. I went in and saw Anthony. Anthony was friendly, sweet and seemed like a really good guy, now, unless he was just having an awful day, or maybe because I went in at 7pm he was spent from a long day... He did a pretty bad job. I brought him a picture of the look I am going for (which is from a video game, ya, I'm that awesome), I told him I wanted to keep my length, just shape it. Not only did he take it WAY too far down, but my mustache above my lip was completely uneven. My beard under my jaw, uneven. And the straight razor cut I got on my right cheek, was awesome (not really, but kinda), especially for the production meeting I had the following day, great way to start a show. So, here I am a few weeks later, the cut, which he said he had never had happen before, is healed. My mustache is filling back in, and my beard is growing back as it tends to do. The shop is awesome, the story behind it is awesome, Anthony is an awesome dude, I just didn't have a great experience. Overall Score Is Fair, not at the fault of my barber, Anthony. He was great, accommodating and professional. I felt great after his haircut and shave. My review goes downhill from there. Given the amount they charge, the overall layout of the barbershop, which is a narrow room off a large beauty salon, is deplorable. There is no true waiting area other than a small uncomfortable wooden bench. The ambiance was really bad. Reminds me of a little hole in the wall, an after thought after putting in their salon. A shampoo isn't even part of their service which is surprising given the cost of a haircut. Astounding. My second appoint was cancelled since they wouldn't even accommodate me when I called to tell them I would be 10-15 minutes late. Jade gave me attitude telling me that they couldn't provide the services scheduled. Her attitude and the way she talked to me resulted in my cancelling the appointment. I will never again make an appointment at Phil's Barbershop in Honolulu given the looks and feel of the place and the overall attitude of the receptionists. I won't miss Phil's Barbershop, but I will most definitely miss Anthony and the great work he does. read more

Yeah it's expensive but you get what you pay for. Do you want a barber/stylist who trained at barber school in Amsterdam and gets called regularly to fly from Hawaii to work at fashion week in Manhattan? Then you want Joe Randazzo. I don't think there's anyone else like him in Hawaii. I asked him for his opinion on what I should do with my whole head region, which stubbornly refuses to grow hair where you'd want it and insists on growing hair in every other possible spot, and which I usually buzz in the mirror myself to save money, with predictable results, and with no hesitation whatsoever Joe gave me a definitive opinion on how he would style me and why. Then he did it carefully and thoroughly, ended with a hot towel scalp massage, and I felt so great I barely noticed the massive dent in my wallet on departure. Barbers usually have me in and out of their chair in less than 10 minutes; Joe put in close to a solid hour and it was worth it. Pre-Joe: no woofs. Post Joe: multiple woofs including international woofs. If you don't know what I'm talking about, guess what, I'm not going to explain it. But woofs are a good thing. First you have to find the place. Phil's Barber is inside J Salon which is inside Ward Plaza which is a big concrete building with no exterior business signs at all except for Revolusun. I walked around the block a few times until I finally called and they guided me in for a landing using instruments only. Once you find J Salon you check in and out through the chic salon and then the barber shop is off to the right in it's own little manly and quiet room where you will get Joe's full attention. The only thing I've missed is the straight razor finish which for some reason I do not get from Joe and I haven't really questioned him on why I do not get this part of his traditional barber routine. Time maybe I think. He also sells a complete line of Baxter men's grooming products. Because you're worth it. read more

Went in for my first time today. Had made an appointment online with Joe. The online reservation was easy to do. They called to confirm the day before but I also got a text and email. They have a 24-hour cancellation policy so the reminders are awesome and they contact you more than 24-hours just Incase you need to cancel. Checking in was a breeze and they were really nice. The waiting area is in the barber shop area which is connected to J Salon but it has its own waiting area. The decor is what I expected from an upscale barbershop with lots of old pictures and classic barber shop chairs. Joe was awesome. He listened to what I wanted to do with my beard which was just a line up. He explained to me what he was going to do and why. They use top notch products and carry my favorite beard products. In the end my beard looked great lines were awesome. This was the first barber shop experience where my neck didn't get red and irritated. He took the time to make things perfect. I recommend this place for guys looking for a beard trim or line up. The prices are competitive and worth it. Next time I'll be back for a hair cut and beard line up. We scheduled an appointment with someone (forgot his name, but his set-up was right next to the window). Booking an appointment on-line was easy. We booked our appointment according to when we flew in and headed there. The inside was very very nice. As soon as we walked in, the staff behind the counter was very nice and friendly. We checked in and she seated us right away (well I sat to the side while my hubby got his hair cut). The inside of Phil's barber is very nice, lots of pictures on the wall and the decor is AMAZING, you can tell the pictures has a lot of history to it. My hubby loved his haircut. I last had a haircut in February and was planning another visit in March when the coronavirus hit and everything went into lockdown. Since my workplace was also closed, long hair wasn't an issue, but 4 months later my head looked like it was covered with a huge mass of weeds and I decided I couldn't put it off any longer. I'm in the Ward area a lot and noticed Phil's Barber Shop one day while walking around. It had an old-timey look to it and seemed neat and tidy. You can book an appointment online and choose the service you want, date/time, and even the barber, depending on availability. I was fortunate enough to get a morning slot with Stephanie. I was very impressed by how thorough the shop is. They text you a confirmation, and later a reminder, of your appointment. You text them when you've arrived and wait outside till they tell you to come in. They remind you, both beforehand and when you get there, that if you're feeling sick or exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19 you will not be allowed to enter. All the employees wear masks and you're expected to keep your own mask on throughout the service, with a few exceptions. They are serious about maintaining good health! Stephanie was pleasant, easygoing, and professional, chatting politely but not talking your ear off like some other stylists I've had. She asked about my preferences and made the best of my admittedly vague direction to "just make it short and neat all around." She paid close attention to detail, cleaning up the edges of my cut with laser focus; she even trimmed my bushy eyebrows without me having to ask! She offered a few add-ons (styling product, etc.) without being pushy and then placed a hot towel on my face, which was a wonderfully soothing conclusion to the service. Never once did I feel she was just rushing through to get to the next customer. She gave me her personal business card and invited me to come back soon. As I was paying, I noticed that she and the other barbers were diligently sanitizing their equipment and wiping down the chairs to ensure the next clients would have as safe an experience as possible. The receptionist cheerfully bid me farewell and I left with a satisfied feeling, something that is in very short supply these days with the pandemic still hanging over our heads. I highly recommend this place. They take pride in their work and it shows. The shop's interior is clean and pleasing to the eye. Communication with the customer is maintained throughout, from the initial reservation to a follow-up query. Public health is a top priority, so worry warts can rest easy.
