The entryway is a little confusing (you have to go through a hotel,and there isn't very clear signage outside), but the actually space is very large and airy. We were seated immediately and our waiter was super attentive and efficient. The boyfriend and I both had bloody Mary's (with a delicious little Olive and chorizo on top) and I thought it was pretty good. We both shared the Spanish breakfast for two (the real winner here were the deliciously salty Serrano ham and lovely chorizo links) and the pancakes, which were very nice and fluffy. Oh where to begin.... I've been wanting to try for as long as I've lived in Chicago and finally got a good excuse with a gift certificate. I arrived and was seated immediately. The dining room is beautiful and a good vibe. I ordered the Mercat G&T, verde salad, and xoco fritos. The drink comes. The gin is good, but the flavors in the mixer were a bit bland. I sip away and it is 50 minutes later until the salad arrives. A leaf with a large brown spot sits on top. I quickly move it. Overall, good flavor and love the spicy combo with cucumbers to balance. The xoco fritos arrive as I'm working on the salad. The description led me to think it'll have rice, but it looked like they fried it with rice in the batter. Pretty solid. The wait was pretty long. I was thinking of doing a fixed meal, but glad I didn't. The couple next to me did and they had some long waits followed by a lot of plates at once. For me, the G&T became diluted and I finished it without a check in. A manager or someone came to apologize for the delay as I was finishing, but that appeared too late. I asked for the check. It came and sat with my credit card for 15 minutes. I even moved it to make the credit card more visible. The waiter also checked with the table next to me during that time. A server even put dessert hardware on the table, even though I didn't order anything and a check and payment sat on the corner. While I normally don't mind an off check process, it's been a longer dinner than expected. I had high hopes to return to try the paella, but am left very disappointed. Bacon-wrapped dates stuffed with almonds--AMAZING Catalan spinach, raisins, pine nuts, and apples--DELICIOUS Flatbread (porcini, Catalan sausage, garlic, manchego)--GREAT Diver scallops--HEAVENLY Grilled calamari--DELECTABLE Butternut squash dumplings over lamb ragout, mushroom, black truffle--MMMMMM Chocolate croquettes on banana marshmallow with caramel and olive oil--!@%$&*#! How can I best describe the croquettes? Like a chocolate ball explosion in your mouth mixed with ooey gooey marshmallow. As I mentioned before, the portions are really tiny, even for tapas. My friends and I had worked up an appetite salsa dancing across the street at the Chicago Summer Dance Festival, so we were still a bit hungry at the end of our meal. I would recommend getting at least 3 dishes per person. And definitely try the sangria. My favorite was the white sangria (pear and grape), which had a great sweet taste. Our server Juan Carlos was friendly and attentive and guided us through the menu. The restaurant itself, located in the Blackstone Hotel, is beautifully decorated, sleek and modern, fun and cheerful, with large windows overlooking Grant Park. Pretty cool place. I was trying to find a place along the red line where I could have a nice kids-free dinner before the show at the Chicago theater. One of my city friends recommended this place. We all loved our dinner. Sangria flight! I wanted to try everything a bit so I got all house-made Sangria. I loved the Blanco and Rose better which have a more crispy taste without too much sugary stuff. Ladies, you will like this. Tapas, Tapas! Everything we tried from the Tapas menu was delicious. Flash fried pepper was fresh with a nice spicy kick. Spanish Octopus was solid and tender which contradict each other but that was how I felt. Garlic shrimp was so juicy and flavorful. Ham and Chorizon Croueutte were fried so nicely. Perfect crunch outside and soft in side. If I could have a second round of those four tapas dishes, I'd suggest the Octopus. The flatbread with shot ribs was pretty good but not that impressive. Then the main one for us is Paella Negro. Truly a dark dish. The picture looked awful when the black rice filled dish on the top of a black table. We ordered this by the time we sat down. Took about 55 minutes to cook for us. Seafood in the plate was fresh and meaty. The rice tasted great at the beginning but I realized it is a bit salty for me. No worries, guys quickly finished everything in the pan. I ate the Piparrada Omelette and had a taste of the Steak and Eggs. The food tasted good, but the price tag on it was a bit steep. The omelette was $18, steak and eggs was $24. The portions were big, but not worth the price. The server seemed to want to rush us out of there as she put the check down right when our food came. The door to the restaurant was also locked when we arrived and they told us to walk around the building and come through the hotel lobby. The restaurant is gorgeous and so is the hotel lobby. It's so that when they go from a brightly lit space to a dim one, they already have one eye adjusted to the light, when they're in a dangerous situation... or when they enter Mercat a la Planxa. Expect a dimly lit, lively interior, alongside an open kitchen. Plenty of staff around, service was fine. Our table got the (3-course) tasting menu. It was kind of hard to hear what the declaration of what each dish was. The tapas ranged from meh to "omg, I could pop those braised rabbit dumplings with brandied cherries like candy". Besides the rabbit dumplings, the other highlight of dinner was the tender lambchop, and I'm not a huge fan of gamey things either. Other tapas served just seemed like fancy versions of flatbread pizza, bruschetta, goat cheese, and prosciutto spinach salad with alright flavors. The garlic shrimp and prawn smelled better than they tasted. I liked the idea of the paella croquettes, but I thought the flavor was lost next to the crispy texture of the croquette. I came here for brunch on a Saturday before going to the Art Institute. It was surprisingly empty (just 2-3 other tables), which we didn't mind. I guess unless the patio is open, it's hard to tell there's an awesome tapas restaurant in here from street level! I had heard good things about the brunch, although I didn't realize that the charcuterie/cheese buffet is only available on Sundays. No biggie, Saturday offers a "Catalan Express" menu which includes 1 appetizer, 1 main, and a iced tea or fountain drink for $18. Not bad. I had the Spanish omelette -- a classic tapas dish and a good gauge for any Spanish restaurant. It was cooked to perfection -- moist and flavourful eggs and potatoes with spices, with a crispy outer layer. I tried one of my DC's mushroom soup which was very rich and delicious too. Another DC had the jamon serrano over salad -- a very big portion but not the most exciting option (you could easily make the same dish at home). For the main, I had grilled sea bass with spring peas and red quinoa. Everything was very fresh and bursting with flavour, with nothing too overpowering. Service was a little scattered but not so much to distract from the amazing Catalan food. Location is great! 2 of my DC's said it was better than any restaurants they tried in Barcelona! Not sure I would go that far, but I would say the dishes seemed authentic and the quality was on par with some of the better restaurants I tried in Barcelona. Extremely disappointed with the entire experience. Brought my wife and two friends for dinner at a former favorite. Post-Pandemic hasn't been kind to this former gem. The menu has an unfortunate revamp, the quality of all the tapas and Paella not worth the ridiculous $235 bill. The Paella was salty and over cooked, the patatas bravas (once a fav) are now just diced potatoes with two sauces drizzle over and completely lacking in taste. The Pulpo was over cooked. The Spanish Tortilla (onion, potato egg) was the smaller than a pickle jar lid and barely even tasted like eggs. I ordered an Old Fashion that didn't include a cherry, and granulated sugar and chipped ice. Was a watered down Maker's Mark at best. The decor hasn't changed, but the lights are turned up too bright and now using QR codes for the menu (without offering WI-FI). For $200+ for four people, use a damn menu. As part of the event, we were served with two wine flights and two appetizers. I cannot recall the name of the wine, but one was a red wine and the other was champagne. A shrimp on skewer and bread with goat cheese was served to pair with the wine. Wonderful, zealous bites! Aside from Yelp's treat, we opted to order a few tapas off the menu. We ordered the monte enebro, fermin jamon serrano, ham and chorizo croquettes, and bacon wrapped dates. Our favorite was the goat cheese and croquettes. The cheese was smooth and pungent! It was excellently paired with the pear slices, bread, and saffron compote. The croquettes were melt-in-your-mouth bites! The bacon wrapped dates are slightly different from the other ones that I have had. These are a little less crispy but sliced almond are tucked within the bacon. To start, the sangria flight. It all tasted so watered down. Not flavorful at all. As I was reading the descriptions, I kept wondering "where are these flavors?!" The patatas bravas and the rabo de toro came first. The fried potatoes were okay. The smoked paprika aioli was good but...eh. This was just okay. I really did like the oxtail ravioli. This place is very vegetarian friendly! My friend is a vegetarian and came here on a whim many years ago so when she came back to Chicago this past weekend, she suggested this place and I'm so glad she did! While I'm not vegetarian, I really enjoyed the dishes both vegetarian and non that were here. We shared the patatas bravas (A must at any tapas!) The waitress was nice enough to tell us the dish was somewhat larger and one was easily shareable when we each had ordered one. This way we could each try more of the other dishes! My friend ordered the croquetas de ceps (Mushroom croquettes) and we both enjoyed them. I got the canelons de sant esteve con jarrete de buey (Short rib filled cannelloni, farm chicken foie gras) and I would definitely get them again! 8:30pm Sunday, after a whole day of meetings, and walking the Housewares Show, my coworkers and I are ready to sit, relax, and eat. To be honest, I wanted to try a new restaurant but the others were too tired, and since one of them was staying at the Blackstone Hotel, we decided to eat at Mercat again. Have to say I'm really happy we did. Starting with service - bartender, waitress, servers - they're all friendly, helpful, and have a great attitude. This time I had the Sangriatini, which is basically a red sangria but they add cava (sparkling wine) which makes it even better and refreshing. As appetizer we ordered the Olives. Wish they sold these in a jar or something, they would be great for a cocktail night with friends, delicious! As entree I had the "Tocino con Cidra" (slow-cooked pork belly, cider glaze, green apples & truffle) and "Setas Al Horno" (wild mushrooms, confit potato, shallot & parsley). The Pork Belly melted in my mouth, perfectly cooked. Thought Mercat couldn't impress me more until I had dessert. We ordered two for the table. One was a chocolate/ coffee mousse, with a sort of caramelized hazelnut sugar cup with ice cream - amazing! - but the best one, in my opinion, (and I would totally mention this in "The Best Thing I Ever Ate!" - if I was in the Food Network), is the "Croquetas De Xocolata" (milk chocolate croquettes, banana marshmallow, rose mary caramel, arbequina olive oil). You have to try this! If you're ever in Chicago, try your best to go to Mercat a la Planxa, Chef Garces, Chef Fiorello and the rest of the staff have created amazing dishes and a wonderful environment for us to enjoy! read more

my partner and I went for their Valentine's Day pre fix menu (which luckily aligned with both Valentine's Day and our anniversary). We were a little disappointed because we had originally made the reservation to try their chef's choice tasting menu (the one they usually have) but since this was the replacement for that on that evening, we went with it! Overall, the food was okay, but could have really used some salt or something. Nothing we tasted was bad, it was just all quite lackluster for a place I had heard such great things about. The beets still managed to have that tinny canned-beet flavor and were probably our least favorite dish. The croquets were probably the most flavorful, but had a strangely unpleasant grainy texture. The tuna was probably the best thing - simplicity worked well here. And the shrimp and beef dishes were kind of forgettable (and probably missing salt too). I think the worst part of this evening was the fact that we waited about 30 minutes for our dessert (with the waiter checking on us several times to see if we got it) and the dessert is... A COLD SLICE OF CAKE. What in the heck was the wait for?! It's not like they were back there making it to throw it in the fridge for us... yeah that wasn't good and made the dessert so disappointing. But you know, it was an experience. The food didn't suck, but it wasn't worth what we paid. The ambiance was nice but loud. The waitstaff were pleasant, but everything was paced incorrectly. Our server, Joanna, was very attentive- a perfect balance of checking in on us, but not in our face all the time. The night before, we ate at a Jose Andres restaurant with much the same style food, but the quality of the food was so above this restaurant, I am amazed this restaurant can stay in business. The food was mediocre at best. The mussels in the Paella tasted terrible. The Paella was not hot and nothing tasted authentic. Again compared to the place we were at the night before was miles beyond this place. I do not recommend this in any way. The kicker is that it cost almost the same as Bar Mar. I'm shocked at the other reviews being so good. And I honestly hate to leave a negative review, but I was here on a date Saturday night and we were both incredibly disappointed. The lone bright spot was our waiter, Sam, who was very friendly and professional. From our table being freakishly unstable and almost tipping over a couple times to our salad being absolutely doused in olive oil, to our paella being incredibly salty, this was just... not good food. We'd hoped the Serrano and iberico ham would be good since the jamón is a main feature, but both they were disappointing too. I'd like to blame that on me being snooty about it after spending some time in Spain, but that doesn't excuse the rest of the experience. Also, my date threw up her meal at home about 2 hours later, and part of me wished I'd done the same. Very great dining experience! I went here for my birthday and the atmosphere and aesthetic is nice. I am a big fan of Iron Chef and I had a fonder interest of the restaurant to know that it is owned by an Iron Chef! The food came out right when it was ready. Service was average. I have found the restaurants in hotels to be hit or miss, and Mercat is definitely a hit. Went there last evening with my family and we got the $55 tasting menu for the four of us, as well as the marinated olives and bread service. The olives were wonderful; the marinade made them simply delicious. Some were pitted, others not - even the same types. Strange, but I expected to have to pit all. The bread was excellent, the butter was unsalted and not memorable. I ordered the San Cristobal Tempranillo, which was $27 for a 9 oz pour. Delicious, but Chicago prices for wine are a bit much. The tasting courses were fantastic. From the bacon wrapped figs to the scallops to the Patatas Bravas to the paella, we were consistently wowed by each dish. Had dinner here with colleagues. We usually love tapas, but I was underwhelmed with this experience. Beginning with the good. They have a lovely Spanish wine selection and the food is very good. The bartender is very sweet and attentive. Perhaps the best thing about this place is the atmosphere--it's stunning inside and out. Great vibe! We had a reservation but all of the staff were eating together before the dining room opened. The bartender greeted us, served us drinks and had us sit in the lounge area until the waitstaff was ready. After the staff ate dinner, the scattered back to the kitchen and we were ignored for 20 minutes before we were able to track down a hostess to seat us. We ordered many items from the menu, all were good-nothing to die for. I know tapas are small, but I felt that everything was significantly overpriced with the exception of the piella. I spent over $60 as an individual and came with a group of 6 and left with plenty of room for dessert. I am a big fan of tapas and when I got a $25 off mailer from them I figured I would give it a shot. Me and a friend of mine stopped in for lunch recently since my coupon was expiring. Its located in The Blackstone Hotel on Michigan Ave. which is convenient for me since I don't live too far from this place and its not a far walk from my job. The place wasn't too occupied and we were able to score a table by the window as we could see Michigan Ave foot traffic. I looked around at the colorful decor and the cool looking bars surrounding the dining room. Looked at the menu and saw what looked like goodies. We got the following: Garlic Shrimp - the best of all Beef lamb & meatballs, pickled vegetables, smoked yogurt and almonds - very good! Charred asparagus -yum Ham Croquettes - meh Rosada Sangria - yeah was real nice Service from our server Joanna was nothing short of stellar as she took good care of us the whole time and is a very cool girl. read more
