Summer, 2024. Got two dozen beef patties to grill for a party the next day. They were in the fridge for less than 24 hours. I opened them up the next day to grill and they are grayish brown, old looking and smelling patties. You know when you buy ground beef patties from the supermarket and leave them in the fridge for a couple days too long and they get brownish grey? That's how Merceps patties were, only worse, and they weren't even in the fridge for a day. Certainly didn't expect that from supposedly "fresh" patties that I spent nearly 3x as much as I would've on grocery store burgers. Brought the patties in the next Monday to return. The owner gave me an attitude right off the bat and argued with me that there was nothing wrong with the brown, gray overpriced patties they sold me. I said, "I don't know what to tell you. I guess we disagree. I'd just like to return them." He continued to argue, gave me an attitude and finally only gave me half of my money back. Fast forward to this year, 2025. Family members had a party and got nearly $75 worth of chicken from Merceps to barbecue. (Keep in mind this would've been maybe $30, at most, worth of chicken at any supermarket.) The $75 worth of Merceps chicken was only in the fridge for a day. When it came time to prepare and unpack the chicken we were met with a horrible surprise. Rancid chicken. Not just past its prime... but literally rancid chicken. Chicken that smelled like rotten fish. Family member called up Merceps and they agreed to give them a store credit and said not even to bring the rancid chicken back to return. Now fast forward to the most recent disappointment . For another BBQ, about a month later, family decide to get from Merceps once again, using the store credit from the rancid chicken. For part of the newest order, we got another dozen beef patties. What do you know? Same thing that happened last year. More brown, gray, sour smelling, un fresh patties. 3 strikes you are out. Stay far, far away from this overpriced butcher with their rancid, stinking meats and rude attitudes. BJs, Costco, Stop and Shop all literally have better quality meat than Merceps.. for half the price. Where do I start. It really pains my heart when I have to write a negative review. But I have to let everyone know my experience. I walked into the store and asked if they sell Oxtails, some guy that worked there said yes and pointed to the refrigerator. Well I didn't want precut oxtail I wanted the butcher to cut the tail for me the way I wanted it cut. The man behind the counter stated he Only sell it precut for $8.99 a pound. I said fine give me 2 lbs. after I paid the man I realized it was frozen. I didn't want frozen precut oxtail. So I asked for a refund. The man behind the counter said do you know that the tail is frozen when it arrives at the butcher. I said sir I honestly just want the oxtail to not be frozen because I wanted to cook it for dinner right away. Then all of a suddenly he says. We do sell the tail but that cost $10.99 a pound. Then he says "Do you know the price of oxtail went up because it's high in demand" That's when I started to think maybe this is a race issue, no one asked for the price of oxtail. I asked if you sold them by the tail. So I said I don't care about the price I just want Oxtail by the tail because I like to get my tail cut up no more then an 1inch in width. How dare you judge me by not telling me what you sell, but yet giving me the cheapest you have. I was very offended. Then he goes to say well if that's what you want you need to call me Monday and I will have it for you Tuesday. I believe that should have been said as soon as I asked if you sell oxtail by the tail and not precut. Why did it take you so long to mention that you sell the tail for 10.99 a pound. That should have been said in the same sentence as precut frozen oxtail is $8.99 per pound. I felt I was not welcome here and that's fine because I will not return. Mercep's has been here for YEARS! Years upon years! To think my parents would rotate here and another place on where to get the meat for Christmas and Easter. I remember coming home from school and my mom had gone to Mercep's and bought some fried eggplant* and something for dinner and it was like a little treat! Their meat and poultry is AWESOME. Although expensive but damn good quality. I mean damn good quality. I cannot confirm nor deny their sausage quality as I go to another store for that. But if you're in the market for great quality meat and can afford the coin? Go for it! You will NOT regret it! * Yes I have gone to Mercep's in the past, yes I have gotten stuff for dinner and yes I've bought fried eggplant and immediately opened the bag and driven home eating said fried eggplant. ** Don't worry I don't over indulge on the eggplant but that's my version of fast food. We picked up two aged porterhouses. I have never gone to a butcher store before. It was so tender and flavorful..the meat melted like butter in our mouths. This was just as good as a high end steakhouse...maybe better. The owner is super friendly. I think we found a new spot!! read more

I have been driving by Mercep Bros' Meat shop for several years, and probably decades at this point. Admittedly, I've never stopped in but have heard great things from all of my friends in the surrounding villages and have enjoyed their grilled items at various parties/BBQs, etc. It wasn't until tonight that I was truly able to appreciate what these guys have been doing so well, consistently, year in, year out. I had the opportunity to enjoy their Sweet-n-Sour Pork Kabobs as well as their Filet Mignon/Beef kabobs. Both featured various vegetables that you would expect in a kabob (red onions, peppers, squash, etc) which were marinated generously in their respective marinades. We had purchased 4-5 kabobs of each, grilled them to perfection, and enjoyed them with a wonderful '97 Bordeaux Style blend from the NoFo of Long Island, Pellegrini Vineyards' Vintner's Pride Encore Red Wine. My favorite of the two frankly, on its own and paired with the wine, was the pork kabobs. These kabobs were quite the hidden gem - how often do you go to a meat store to buy pork kabobs? How often do you buy pork kabobs in general!? Normally it's everything but... I also had a few spoonfuls of their macaroni salad which was quite nice - not full of sugar and vinegar like most other stores/delis, well done. Anyhow, I have several friends in the area and I now know where I'll be going to pickup top notch eats to enjoy with my friends. Several thumbs up to these guys, keep doing what you're doing! Truly wish it was better. They have an odd amount of marinated meat, which means... meat that is about to turn. (Age old trick... my grandfather owned a grocery store in the 1950s). Mercep's is definitively not the best on Long Island. There is an amazing butcher in Babylon and another in Lindenhurst. That said... Mercep's is probably the best in Saint James. Although, sadly, Whole Foods has better quality. Staff is generally friendly. That said... I was very disturbed by a Trump 2020 "bank note" in the display case. We're not terribly political people, but Trump is a liar, an idiot, a grotesque human being, and a horribly dangerous president. Mercep's clear support of Trump means we can no longer support Mercep's. Out last purchase there was made 3/14/20. Lose the politics and run your business. read more

Mercep Brothers is "THE" finest butcher that you could ever want in your neighborhood ! The guy has been in business for 50+ years. If that's not enough, they offer the best selection of meats. If it's Beef, they have it all. The "marinated" steak, no matter what the cut" is superb. They offer a variety of homemade sides, my two favs are the Brussel Sprouts & their signature "baked beans". Don't leave the store unless you take both! . Finally the staff is very friendly will offer their assistance with how to prepare anything they offer. I would go no where else. This is a fantastic butcher shop that makes me wonder why anyone would buy their meats anywhere else. I had just moved to the area and I was planning a big party so I needed some BBQ stuff. They were very friendly and helpful. I ordered 6 racks of ribs for smoking that came out awesome. Then the burgers.... They ground them fresh the morning of my party, and were still working on it when my cousin arrived to pick them up. In fact it was their idea to do it that morning to make it as fresh as possible. It was so worth is as the burgers were perhaps the best I have ever had. Everyone at my party was saying how great they were. The night I ordered my stuff, I picked up some prime strip steaks for the low price of $10.99 lb. Even at places like costco they are 13.99 for prime meat, and you will not find prime at supermarkets. All the steaks are cut thick. This may seem like a shill review due to the gushing here about this place, but it is just that I love small businesses, friendly service, and quality and this place has all of that PLUS it is actually cheaper than the grocery stores etc so you can't beat it! read more

Very poor handling and storage of meats......UNSAFE to say the least ! Was there last week and actually saw the owner handling and cutting cold cuts with bare hands ! They tried to remodel this place--BUT it is a facade ! Very scary to order food from this place ! It's only a matter of time before someone becomes ill ! As noted in a few other reviews - owner is a rude and incompetent -and he thinks he is doing the customer a favor by serving them ! Went here for my first and only time. The price per pound is not displayed in the case on anything but I will tell you it's expensive!! I bought a marinated turkey London broil which was so poorly butchered one side was 1/2" thick & the other 2 1/2" thick making it a nightmare to grill. The flavor was ok but at approximately $7.50 per pound for TURKEY I certainly expected more. I also bought a prime London broil which I would normally pay about $6/lb (& yes that's for prime beef) which was also poorly butchered with a huge thin spot in the middle for about $13.50/lb it was really unacceptable. I will take partial responsibility as I should have asked to see it before he wrapped it up but on the other hand perhaps he should have showed it to me first. The quality of the meat was good hence the 2 stars as opposed to a 1 star total fail but again a challenge to cook properly on the grill. read more

My friend and I got two marinated strip steaks and some german potato salad the other day. Both were seriously great. Based solely on the quality of those two items there was no doubt they deserved the 5 out of 5. However... there were no posted prices on anything. And the cost for the steaks was pretty high - over $13 a pound I believe. But my opinion is that the rating is for quality not value and honestly I'd rather pay 30 dollars for excellent quality than 20 dollars for mediocre quality. read more

Okay a friend of mine was nice & gave me a few dozens of their baked clams, which where the best I have had. So with that I decided to visit the shop a few weeks ago & picked up more clams, a marinated porterhouse steak, which was to die for, potato skins again the best I have ever had, pigs in the blanket, which I always thought mine where the best until I tried Mercep Bros & again the best I have had. I also picked up hot & cheese & parsley sausage which where a high quality sausage, I'm very fussy when it comes to sausage. Then went back again & did the clams, skins & tried the chicken cordon blue fantastic! I just put an order in moments ago for 3 marinated filet mignons, clams, skins & chicken cordon blue. I highly recommend Mercep Bros you will be in for a nice treat. read more

These guys are just awesome. The meat is the freshest you can get, and the quality makes such a difference. It is completely worth it to spend a little extra on a whole chicken and know its fresh, and the taste is no match. Now even my boyfriend can pick out "butcher chicken" over supermarket cuts, and ALL of the leftovers get eaten. Their buttermilk marinated chicken breasts are to die for, and one breast can easily feed two people very well. I'm on a very restrained budget, and I can go into Mercep and tell them "I'm tight this week" and they always have a great suggestion, or a smaller cut because they know I only feed two people. I was able to make the most incredible Veal Parm for my boyfriend's birthday, because they sliced four perfect cutlets for me right there and it was less than $10. Yesterday I picked up a nice size sirloin steak, a whole chicken, some Boar's Head hot dogs, homemade onion rings, and some fresh, local corn for $30!! Great quality, great service...and when you end up with the most flavorful, buttery steak you've ever cooked, you come out feeling like a Rock Star. Thanks guys!!! . read more

Steaks are OUT OF THIS WORLD! Especially the marinated porterhouse and ribeye steaks! But on the contrary, the owner is a COMPLETE JERK! He's rude, self-righteous, AND MOST DISGRACEFUL...... CHEEEEEEEAP!!!! He wouldn't give you a single DOLLAR off.... Or a loaf of Italian bread, one single onion ring that just came out of the fryer and he puts on display on top of the counter, or for that matter he won't give ANYTHING (regardless the fact that both me and my family spend copious amounts of money there on a monthly basis!!!!!) I'm NOT looking for a giveaway by ANY means. But I spend AT LEAST $200-$300 each time I go in! I would think he would want to KEEP my business and keep me coming back! I was In town from Brooklyn over Labor Day staying at a friends with my family. It felt great over a weekend dedicated to labor to find such craftsmanship just minutes away to give my dollars to instead of the super markets down the street. Don't get me wrong I support a family and will buy choice meat at the supermarket for general weekly eating, but if you can't tell the difference from that and the gorgeously butchered prime steaks and beautifully composed sausage you might not deserve to eat them. read more

One of the best butchers on Long Island. Prices are reasonable and always give the best pieces of meats. Need something special, give them a couple of days and they can get what ever you need. Most times they all ready have it. Great marinated steaks that they supply to a great Hamptons restuarant that you can buy right in the showcase.
