Another food safari and another BBQ crawl with my son-in-law (we're both aspiring pitmasters and love to try new places together; it's our thing). This week's excursion brought us to Struggletown BBQ in Mount Sinai, NY. From what I learned, what started as a food truck morphed into a brick-and-mortar business that has obviously hit its stride. This place is awesome! On the table this time was a "Big John's Sampler", a 1/4# platter of brisket, pulled pork, chicken, and ribs, as well as a side of chicken wings in an Alabama White Sauce and corn bread. Absolute winners all around. My first real introduction to corn bread was from Paul Prudhomme's cookbook "Louisiana Kitchen," where I learned to make, and love, a traditional southern corn bread (moist, flaky, and somewhat sweet). Of all the places that I've been to, in my humble opinion, this place has the best outside K-Paul's. There is a reason that it's one of the most requested items from the restaurant. It was excellent! Why am I making a fuss about cornbread? Because it's the details that make a restaurant great. Next came the chicken wings in Alabama White Sauce. I'm now a convert. Sure, I've had it a few times, but this version was eye-opening! Perfectly smoked, then fried chicken wings slathered in this red-sauce alternative was an epiphany for me. I don't think I'll ever look at the humble chicken wing the same way again. I am spoiled for life! Goodbye Buffalo, hello Decatur (where the sauce reputedly originated). Yeah, that good and worth traveling for. The meats? What you want from a BBQ joint. The brisket, pulled pork, and chicken were all juicy and smoked to perfection; the ribs had a smoke ring that made me jealous of their skill set (I'll get there one day). Have I said "awesome? yet? Plenty of parking, all cards, and they cater! This is one of those places that you'll want to day trip to if you're jonesing for some smoky greatness. I passed this place all week not having time to stop. Friday I took time for myself and boy was I glad I did. I had the pleasure of meeting the owners. Wonderful couple. They helped me with my order being my first time. I got the brisket it was absolutely perfect. My meal came with two sides. I choose the beans and coleslaw, both homemade. I think I bit my tongue a few times the food was so delicious. Thats a joke as im sure you know. Restaurant was clean, inviting and a great atmosphere food dining. I am a forever customer. The only downside i could think of is its about 25 mins away from my house. If barbecue is your thing don't waste another minute stop over to struggle town. If you order the southwest quesadilla, be prepared for it to be smothered with red and green peppers, even though the description says "Chopped steak, cheddar jack cheese, chipotle aioli, and a chopped onion ring". And whatever you do, don't calmly mention that they might consider updating the menu to reflect the peppers because the kid will back away and say he "doesn't want to argue with you". Uhm. We did a takeout order an hour before closing. We got the half rib meal with baked beans and Mac and cheese. Loved every last bite of it! The baked beans are excellent. We also ordered the onion rings which came nice and crispy. Our friend ordered the brisket meal with Mac and cheese and corn bread. He enjoyed his meal as well. We will definitely be back. Came here because me and my fiancé were hungry and in the neighborhood. Me and my fiancé love bbq, so when we stumbled across Struggle town it was a no brainer. I'm happy they open this store front because before this was here it was a pizza spot and the pizza was super mid. Great new establishment for the neighborhood and the bbq was surprisingly really good. My fiancé got a pull pork platter with 2 sides of baked beans and Mac and cheese. Pull pork was flavorful and the sides were decent. I really enjoyed the baked beans but the Mac and cheese was nothing special. I ordered brisket sandwich and the brisket was tender and very good. For the price you really can't go wrong here. I seen slot of complains on yelp from others about the portion size, but for $20 a pull pork plate with 2 sides it's a steal. We had this BBQ for my son-in-law's birthday. We ordered nearly the entire menu and were no disappointed. The brisket and pulled pork and burnt ends were delicious. The cornbread and corn nuggets and fried pickles were perfect sides. The baked beans were the star of the show and the best I've ever had. My son-in-law had the chicken quesadilla and loved it. We have ordered food 3 times from struggletown. The first 2 times were fine, but yesterday's order of the yardbird had a big piece of really fatty skin and a meager portion of chicken. Perhaps they were running out of meat, but all orders should be more consistent. read more

My wife & I walk in before superbowl. The counter person says we're sold out, sorry. It smells amazing inside but we bootskoot out and plan our return. Second visit, Friday night, 6:30. We walk in, my wife orders one meat platter with two sides and I ordered "The Big Tex" along with chicken wings. We grab a seat and wait for our Que. My sandwich comes out, look at the craftsmanship. I chose the signature sauce and it's topped with coleslaw. Total banger. The restaurant isn't large, there are a few two top tables. They have a large take out business as people were coming in after us and picking up their orders. It's now 7:30 and someone comes in to place an order. In response to the incredible generosity of this business, my husband and I decided to give them a try via DoorDash. We ordered the yard bird sandwich, ribs, corn nuggets, coleslaw, BBQ beans, cornbread, and burnt ends and everything was delicious! The Carolina gold sauce is amazing, put it on everything, order extra of it on the side if you can, it's so good! So happy to support a local business who in response to SNAP being defended, decided to give away their food no questions asked. So ridiculous. It's 7 pm, I pulled up and another potential container is coming out and says they are closed. It's SEVEN PM! Dinner time. How in the world do you close at 7???? I will NEVER go back there. Anyone who doesn't want to work can't be doing their food well. The taco place next door = OPEN. the drive through mart= OPEN. Struggletown BBQ is a great local spot in Mount Sinai that's clearly run by people who care about good food. The brisket is tender, smoky, and not drowned in sauce. Sides are solid too- the Mac and cheese is a family favorite. The vibe is casual and welcoming, and the staff is helpful without being pushy. Casual dining with very well-made BBQ. They have generous portions and fair prices. They do sometimes run out of certain items, so getting there earlier in the day is a good move. Take Out. We were looking to pick up dinner. Tired of the same old Chinese, Italian or Mexican places. Wanted something a little different. Came across Struggletown BBQ in my Yelp search. Figured we will give it a try. Wasn't expecting much, since really good BBQ in NY is rare. We ordered a few things. Corn balls and the Struggle Dog. Also ordered the pulled pork platter and the Mustang. The only Con is doing takeout. Living 15 min away. The smell from the food made me want to eat the car. It was incredible! For the Pros. Generous portions. Plenty of food. Visually it looked amazing. Taste did not disappoint. Tasted amazing. True BBQ. Slow cooked. Tender and juicy. I am so glad we found this place. We had 40+ people at our house all curious where this food was from and how it was THAT delicious. The ribs fell off the bones, the burnt ends melted in your mouth, the corn bread tasted like cake, and the pulled pork with their homemade BBQ sauce was mouth watering. If someone from struggle town reads this... I would include a poster or business cards for the restaurant with each catering order. Everyone loved the catering and wanted more!! Went for a last minute lunch while Christmas shopping, and it was like walking into a scene from a Hallmark holiday movie. I'm always impressed by the Struggletown food and in my experience it's the best barbecue on Long Island. The food truck is regularly at Heritage Park in Mt.Sinai and I haven't tried anything I haven't loved. My favorites are Jake's Steak Sandwich and the Struggledog but they also have some terrific specials that change weekly. The service is always friendly and there are a few picnic tables in the park which are perfect on a nice day. They have canned drinks and good sides like man n cheese and corn bread but it's really all about the meat and they seem to do it all well wether it's beef, chicken, pastrami, or ribs! read more

Help!! We are in need of a BBQTF. Barbecue Treatment facility. We experience withdrawal symptoms and food fantasies. Our recent adventure was fall off the bone ribs, corn bread that should be renamed corn cake. Creamy cole slaw and of course. Wings. Gold sauce on the side. Incredible! I love this place. The pulled pork is incredibly delicious, they nail the brisket, and pulled chicken is super moist. It's hard to find a great coleslaw but they absolutely crush that too (I can tell they let it marinate as it should be done and the mayo amount is balanced). They also have many options to sub out the bbq sauce for gluten free ones. They've become an easy week night dinner staple at our house. read more
