Felt it was kinda like fusion italian and something else making the whole food experience taste weird. No idea what they wanted to convey thru the food. We had better food elsewhere. Meridionale was a perfect place to go for an amazing meal in Trastevere. We went as a group of four and were seated outside. The weather was perfect and so was the food. The cacio e pepe here was easily in the top five pastas I had in Italy. The portions of pasta were just right - not too small, but not heaping that you needed to be wheeled away in a wheelchair. Service was great and we spoke in English (and Italian) with our waitress about New York City, since that is where we live, and life in the states. Highly recommend! Meridionale is my #2 favorite restaurant in Italy. This was highly recommended by locals in Trastevere. After our first night dining here, we were so amazed that we came back a second time. The ambiance here is quiet and romantic but not boring or awkward. The interior is done up nicely but not too upscale - homey and inviting like a friend's living room. It would work well for date night or a casual night out with friends with house plants galore. Pre-COVID visit: We had amazing service throughout the evening on both visits. We were treated like royalty, to be honest. The restaurant was neither dead nor too busy, so our server was upbeat and gave us his undivided attention. This was one of my favorite places to come to for dinner. I always had 2 side orders, le patate and la caponata. I would combine the two with some chili flakes on top and it was sooo bomb together. What a great find! Our friends went to Meridionale when they were in Rome, and they told us we have to go, so thankfully we listened, and took them up on their suggestion. This restaurant is refreshing, a bit funky in it's decor, not a big restaurant, but just cozy enough without feeling overcrowded. You won't be able to find many tourists here, this is definitely a spot for the locals who know great food! And great food there was... it was our last night in Rome, so we all decided to get fresh pastas. They were absolutely delicious! This restaurant is so cute. I loved all the decorations and ambiance this little place had. I made a reservation for 7pm on a Friday. The restaurant was 80% full by the time I left around 8:30. Customers were mix of locals and tourists. The dinner started of with a sparkling wine and some toasts (not sure if they were complementary). I had their delicious octopus pie for appetizer. It is called "pie," but it just has a very thin pie layer outside, so it's actually soft and not like a real pie crust. Octopus were chopped and soft, mixed with potatoes. I loved this dish. For the main, I tried the sea bass. So I noticed the side vegetables were exactly same side of the octopus appetizer. I was a little sad about it. Although I liked these veggies, it would have been nice if I had some more variety. The fish tasted a little blunt - so I asked for some lemon, which made it perfect. Not sure how they cooked the fish (edge area are crispy burned), but it was not what I expected. (I expected it to be more moisture finish) The tiramisu was nice, but not the best I've ever had. Overall, their service was great and the dining experience was very nice. I'll definitely come back and try different main dish next time. read more

Suggestions of the week in function of the season. With the 4 of is we tried 6 different dishes: All of them very delisious! Service is a kind of funny as the cook prepares not by the table, but by the dishes, so the waitresses shuffle from one table to the other. The culinary gods were on our side the other night when we walked into Meridionale. It was 6:30pm... I knew it was too early for dinner, and it was, Yelp lied! They don't open til 7:30, so take note my friends. Also, make a freaking reservation. We were one of the last tables they accepted and I will be forever grateful to them. The place had a good mix of tourists and locals, I would say, so go while it still retains its charm. The food.. I don't even think I can call it food because it was better than just "food"... It was an out of body experience. I promise to upload photos soon. We began with the Meridionale "sampler" or misto... It was a BUNCH of their apps for a great price of €20. It says it feeds two, but could easily feed four. I would have to say, I loved it all. Such different tastes. The sweet potato/bechamel (I think) spread was my favorite. For pasta I had the schiaffoni bolognese and my man had the salmon pasta with oranges. Both were fantastic. Tiramisu to end it all... Perfetto! Cozy little restaurant in a back alley from the bustling Trastevere piazza, decor intimate with rustic charm. Small terrace and AC interior which provided much relief to a very humid day in July. Menu short but creative, taking on traditional dishes and bettering them. We had the pear and pecorino puff pastry, it was delicious. The perfect balance of sweet and savoury. We followed by two pasta dishes, carbonara spaghetti and arugula and pesto gnocchis. The carbonara was the best we've ever had. The gnocchis were extremely fresh and well prepared, you could still taste the graininess of the mashed potato base. The pesto was very fresh but could have used more pine nuts and maybe more savoury herbs. For dessert, we had their 'dolce pistachio'; a spread of pistachio filled crumbled cookie topped off with vanilla ice cream! Divine! We also ordered the Panacotta... It was the Bly deceiving thing of the night, lacked sweetness. Prices were very decent, 46 euros total for appetizer, 2 pasta dishes, 2 deserts and a half a bottle of house white! We had the octopus cake and the baked eggplant as appetizers, both delicious, and the pasta alla matriciana which was outstanding. We have had this in several other places, and this was the best. The sauce was flavorful but not excessively fatty, and really clung to the pasta. For secondi we had the chicken with green beans and grape tomatoes (delicious and the vegetables were cooked perfectly) and the sea bass with zucchini flowers on a bed of thinly sliced potatoes - easily one of the best things I have ever eaten. My husband and I had dinner here tonight, our first night in Rome. We found the place after wandering around the neighborhood for awhile and I fell in love with the cozy atmosphere and insisted on trying it for dinner. We did not have a reservation but it was rather early (for dinner in Rome, anyway) and they sat us immediately. The wait staff was very attentive and kind, they also spoke English and had a menu in English, which was a bonus since our Italian leaves much to be desired. They brought out small glasses of tasty Prosecco to every person as they sat down; I'm always going to like a place that serves you free champers. We ordered a litro of the house white wine, and I thought the wine was VERY good at a very decent price (12€). I ordered the daily special, orechiette with tuna and pistachios; my husband ordered some type of puff pastry for an appetizer and then some pasta with tomatoes and eggplant. The food was good, not unbelievable but tasty, and the portions were more generous than I would have expected. For dessert, we ordered the pannacotta, also very good. I thought that, for 53€, this place was a pretty good deal. I was initially nervous that it might be super touristy as they had English menus and, up until about 8:30, everyone in the restaurant WAS American. However, I think thay might have been due to the earlier dining time as by the time we were leaving, there were just as many Italians. Overall, I'd consider this a successful meal. read more

Whilst searching for Aperitivo a little after 7 because it was way too early to eat dinner in Rome we stumbled upon Meridionale which caught us by its charm immediately. The design is quite charming, like a grandmother's kitchen from the 50's. The menu was befitting to my vegetarian needs, vegan as well if needed. They had just opened and we were the first to sit. We decided to sit on the cozy patio where the waitress turned the heat lamp on which was great since it's mid November. After being indecisive for a bit from the many great looking dishes on the menu, we ordered 5 dishes plus the tiramisu at the end - which is to die for. I'm stuffed and still want more. To go along with the spectacular food the service from the cute and good looking staff was both friendly, quick and efficient. Took my parents and sister to Il Boom on their vacation visit to Rome. I had read really great things about the restaurant with the mid-century theme, but a local shop owner warned me they had recently had a change in ownership. The young wait staff was really friendly and made suggestions for us and took care of us, so we were quite happy with the service. We got their fairly early in the evening (maybe 7pm) and had a great big table for our group. The food was pretty good and so there are no complaints about the quality of the cuisine. However, the new owners or the youthful employees couldn't make the atmosphere click. The music (almost all in English) didn't really take us back because it was scattered around the 60s, 70s, and 80s. The wait staff was dressed in t-shirts and jeans, so there was no visual theming. There was an ok amount of memorabilia and vintage objects and posters around, but in order to stand out from other decent, but unremarkable Italian restaurants, Il Boom had better get its schtick down. read more
