Our server was great, but the food was just okay. The Saturday chicken sandwich special was a sloppy mess, but it was tasty hot and juicy. The Reuben had really nice bread, but the sour kraut tasted smokey (so bizarre) and the meat portion was smaller than other places we frequent. The fries were hot and nicely crispy. On a weekend of culinary experiences, this food stands tallest! My Surf & Turf lunch had delicious grilled Steak Tips cooked to order, w lightly battered & fried Catfish Bites and Housecut Chips. This is a small town bar and grill and you can tell the second you walk in. Beer was fresh and cold. I had the club and thought it was pretty good. Sadly the rest of my party did not enjoy their food. Burger was subpar, chicken fingers were a bit over cooked and fish and chips were interesting. Our service was a really nice lady so that was a plus! If you live in peculiar I def would recommend! read more

I have nothing positive to say about my experience at Merle's, so I write this as a warning to passer-byers who may think this is a good idea for a quick meal. Don't. Spare yourself and just don't. Our experience was horrid. Walked in, totally ignored. Waitress finally acknowledged us by pointing to an empty table. 20 minutes later we got water splashed on us as she slammed down the glasses with menus...and then proceeded to immediately ask us what we wanted to order. Ummm.... we just got menus. I asked for two minutes, mistake. Took another 10 to get her back. When she returned, exasperated by us, she just took out her pad and stared at us. Not a word. Our cold, stale, dry, awful, from a frozen bag food was later delivered by another staff member who left us with no condiments, no silverware, no water refill (never got that tea I ordered and had to pay for), and just sitting. After another 5 minutes, I helped myself to the condiments, silverware, napkins, etc., that I had spotted and had to walk our glasses to the bar for water refills. The bartender was highly annoyed that we weren't ordering drinks (it's lunch, we're traveling, sorry bud...) My reminder note for this review was: "Worst restaurant experience of my life.". It is for sure in the top 5 worst eating experiences I have ever had. Happily will never return to give it a second chance. read more

Food was good but the bartender had a personality like at rock no matter how much I tried to make small talk. All well until I saw her and another waitress using orders as snack plates, taking what looked like tots and an appetizer to snack on then serving the customers what they paid for after they had their hands in the dish. Merle's is shining bright among so many dim bulbs in the Cass County restaurant world. While fast food and chain restaurants abound, we have very few quality, locally owned restaurants. Merle's is the exception to the rule. If you can't find anything you like on Merle's menu, then you can't read, 'cause there's something there for every taste. Our business group of seven ol' men - well a couple were in their 30s or 40s - ordered up hearty meals of bacon cheeseburgers, pork tenderloin sliders, a "normal" pork-T, fish & chips and fish tacos. Once the food arrived, the talking pretty much stopped. Good stuff! The food is homemade, the service is fabulous and the prices are just right. Throughly disappointed. I ordered a Philly steak sandwich with mayo on the side. Order a sandwich to go, got my food home and found out this was just a hamburger patty they chopped up.
