Love this coffee shop! The bakery snacks are delicious and owners are always friendly

My wife meets a few of her pals here once a week to knit and crochet and gab. I sometimes run in when it's time to pick her up, and after only a couple of visits we're on a first name basis. Their coffee drinks are unusual and they change frequently, but I've not had one yet that I wouldn't order many times again. They also have a pretty good selection of whole beans from all over the world. Good place to hang out for a while - only a few tables though, so come early!! read more

Merlin's is my favorite coffee shop of all time. All of their coffee and drink selections are amazing and made with passion. The muffins and pastries are also amazing and not to miss out on. I have been going here for years. My daughter and I go every Sunday morning for our coffee and muffins. not only is the food and the service great but the prices are also phenomenal compared to buying coffee literally anywhere else. If you have kids there is tons of cool art on all of the walls and there's even some toys in there that ya little ones might end up getting into! I'm always looking for a new coffee spot and saw Merlin's Coffee was only a 15 minute walk away from my house. So I figured why not check it out and it did not disappoint! Walked in and was instantly greeted by a smiling face. After conversation we learned her name was Donna. Very sweet. Once our coffees were made she said if they needed anything to let her know and she would fix it how ever we like it, but that was not necessary. They were perfect! I'm not much of a coffee drinker unless it's decaf, tried their decaf peanut butter latte and it was good. I'll need to try their herbal looseleaf teas and a dessert. Holy cow! What a little gem this place is! The lady and her husband that own the place are cat obsessive. Cat decorations everywhere. Conversations about cats. Cat rescue donations can be made. Cats. Cats. Cats. Absolutely awesome lady. So friendly. All coffee is organic. They roast their own beans. It used to be like a cat cafe, with cats in the cafe, but she said the health board put a stop to it. Shame. Tell you what though - tons of love. Beautiful place. Excellent coffee. BEWARE - Drove out of our way to go to this shop that was touted as having the best coffee in Hanover. My wife walked in and neither the person behind counter nor the person in line before her was wearing a mask. She left. Went to Panera instead. Never knew they have an $8.99 a month unlimited coffee deal. And the coffee was super. Pennsylvania is in the top 5 states for COVID-19 cases. With noncompliance mask wearing like this it is no wonder. read more

The food and drink are great. It was the help that made it weird. The person working behind the counter, a middle aged woman with brown hair and brown eyes must have been in a bad mood. After a man (who must have been the owner) came in, made some coffee, served a few customers, and left, she spoke about him to the very next customer. She complained about how he "got in her way" and "made free drinks for everyone at the warehouse" and so it went. Prior to this she spoke to an earlier customer about the owner and how he, "one day just came in and said I don't want to work here anymore." When asked why he did that she said that he made comments about the "bipolar, psycho, schizophrenic, drug addicted people that live around here" and that "he just got sick of it." Wow!!! Just wow! Just stopped in today for the first time! The girl at the counter was really nice, and she suggested a good cup of coffee... I can't remember what it was called, but it had caramel in it. The prices are really reasonable compared to a lot of other coffee shops. If I had gotten that same drink at Starbucks, it probably would have cost me $5 instead of $3. One of the first things I noticed was all of the animal lover signs all over the cafe. And they collect money for the Appalachian cat rescue. I'm all about saving the animals, so I thought this was pretty badass! To the one person who gave this place a bad review.. did you ask the owner if he was against gay rights? You assumed off of a few photos on the wall. I wouldn't say that's the best way to judge the place.. that's generalizing. There were several republican's on the wall of shame as well. I noticed that today.. including Sarah Palin. I mean I'm just saying. Not a whole lot of seating (indoors), I would have to say that's really my only complaint. Besides that the place is great. Merlins Coffee is a super place to hang out and meet your friends in the morning - or listen to music on Monday nights. I'm a tea drinker, so I like their soy chai. They also have lots of loose teas. Again the chai is a winner, so are the Darjeeling and the Russian teas. When Merlins Coffee fires up their coffee roaster, all of Historic Downtown Hanover smells delicious. I am not sure what was worse.. the owners attitude, the coffee or the filthy shop. I stumbled across the shop by mistake and was rather excited to find what I had hoped to be a cute and friendly little coffee place like many I have been to across the country. She was irritated that I asked for a coffee suggestion, not happy that I paid with a credit card and then after waiting on me, continued to give the man behind me a hard time about paying with a large bill and how "people come in and pay for one coffee with $20." The entire 60 second visit was the most uncomfortable and unwelcome I have ever felt in any place in hanover, and possibly Pennsylvania. Go to Jaquelines off of Baltimore Street next to the bowling alley instead. Better coffee, friendlier and much cleaner. read more

I can't even rate this company based on their products since I didn't order any. I am reviewing this company based on my experience. I am always excited to support locally owned businesses instead of chains. So I figured this would be a great chance to do so. As we pulled up to the building, I noticed a "Stop Obama" sign in the window. This slightly alarmed me, but very typical for the local politics, and I shrugged it off. When we entered I noticed a sign proclaiming the owner's affliation or admiration of the tea party patriots, and a slew of photos on their wall of shame. Mostly democratic politicians and some celebrities (including lady gaga and oprah). Even all of this would be permissable I guess except for the culture war that a lot of the tea party members wage, especially against womens rights and the gay community. As a lesbian, I just didn't find myself comfortable supporting a business who doesn't support me. topping off my decision to leave was the guy who came into the coffee shop loudly discussing with the employee about if she knew that he was an asshole. I'm sure their coffee maybe fine, their prices might be okay too (I didn't look). And if you don't mind the negative propraganda in your face when you're trying to enjoy some coffee this place might be for you. read more

Wow! The fancy frufru coffee drink I had was excellent! The Cherry Bomb! Husband and kid liked theirs too- drunken mocha and a steamer. While the food and drink were good, we'll be back to see the people. College kid working the counter was fun, energetic, and loved what she did. Bossman walked in, started screaming orders changing the whole peaceful, reason we come to a coffeecbar atmosphere but after watching them laughing, snickering, and enjoying what they do for work, we got into the chaos. Spent almost 90 minutes just getting to know the people, the area, and all that's going on in Hanover, PA while sitting at a table next to the counter. Loved it all. Can't wait to go back. read more

Stumbled across this place after joining my mom at church one morning. WOW, all types of coffee beans for sale. The coffee selection is superior and the service is exceptional. And by exceptional I mean both welcoming and educational. I brought my wife the next time I visited and now she orders coffee beans to be delivered from Merlins. We live an hour away, but do enjoy the unique vibe and tasty variety of coffee options at Merlins. read more

Coffee not bad, service not so great. They open at 7. We arrive after 7 with the open sign lit and the door is locked and the owner said with an attitude that she just got there and it will be a while. So we went to work without coffee. We had tried this place several times and have been disappointed almost consistently with the attitude of the owner. I love this place! I come home to Hanover to visit my parents about 3 times a year and I always stop by here. It's up the street. I'm obsessed with cats so I feel right at home here-there is cat stuff everywhere! (But no more cats unfortunately). The coffee, beans, and fancy frozen drinks and lattes are all excellent. I'm one of those people that can't drink caffeine. I was so thrilled the first time I stopped at Merlin's! They have over a dozen different decaffeinated beans. I didn't know which to try first.Now instead of buying regular decaf coffee at the grocery store I have so many options. Decaf Colombian and Merlin's Magical Mix are my favorites.Now I can enjoy great coffee without the caffeine effects.I've been there nearly every week since.
