Their food is very spicy. If, like me, you find their 1 on a 1-5 spicy scale to be too hot (I'm Cajun and can usually hold my own in terms of spicy), them they are very accommodating. I got a level 1 spice curry Panaang chicken and shrimp dinner. I found it too be very, very spicy, so I requested a pitcher of water be left at our table (we were eating outside). They were very happy to bring me a pitcher, but they asked if the spice level was too spicy for me. I smiled, chagrined, and admitted that it was. Then, they offered to remake my meal for me. At first, I said no need, but they asked several times and made it seem absolutely ok to remake my meal. So, I asked them to go ahead and do so. I'm not usually one to send my food back, so I appreciated them asking several times. Then, to be sure that I was happy, they also brought me out a bowl of coconut milk/cream to add to the dish in case it was still spicy for me. The remade one was absolutely perfect and didn't need the extra coconut. The server was also awesome. Overall, what could have been a not perfect night turned into a wonderful evening. Between the server, the owner, and the ambiance, out was a beautiful sunset dinner. My only, ONLY suggestion would be if you are eating outside to bring some kind of OFF or citronella candle or bug repellent. The mosquitoes are bad at dusk. I gave this place 4 stars for ambience and the bar vibe. The restaurant is very cool and picture worthy. The drinks are ok - the cocktails on the menu have a Thai theme and unfortunately the 3 I tried did not taste good at all. The food is anything but authentic. It was tasty, but definitely items do not come here if you expecting Thai food. It's more "a white guy doing Thai fusion" food. Finally got a chance to eat at this establishment. Very quaint and lovely for a night out. Our server was attentive and an excellent host. Overall the food was really good, I ordered a curry dish, but a bit on the spicy side for my liking- like really spicy. I get they are using all fresh ingredients and spices but it was a little overpowering in my opinion, my eyes even watered up at one point and I ordered with no extra spice. But the food arrived on good schedule and the restaurant and our waiter was very accommodating. I'm looking forward to go back with a friend one night since he always orders level 5 spicy and would probably love it there! Looking forward to trying some of their other dishes. read more

The Yelp reviews did not steer me wrong. Merlion had great food and atmosphere, but what really stood out was the service. I took my boyfriend for his birthday, and when I informed our waitress Candace, she began to work her magic. She surrounded the candle on our table with real rose petals, brought his desert with a candle and Happy Birthday written in chocolate sauce on the plate, and presented him with a bottle of champagne as a gift. Those were the standout elements, but it's also the little things. He wanted sangria, which wasn't on the menu, but they made it with no problem. When I described what I wanted in a wine, she suggested something that fit the bill perfectly. The fried rice portions were large enought that a I had a second full meal the next day, and the signiagure snapper dish was delicious. EXTREMELY OVERPRICED! Was craving some tom kha soup and made the mistake of walking into this place. Im from California and have had my fair share of authentic Thai food. The flavors are far from authentic. My lobster tom kha tasted like canned coconut milk with a dash of sriracha. No galangal or lemongrass flavor at all! We also had the crab and apple salad with was not very memorable. I don't recall what else we had because we were so upset from the disappointment of the first few dishes, but they were certainly not good enough for us to remember them. Service was also horrible. The waitress had the social skills of a brick wall and we never got drinks refilled. I understand its a thai fusion place but I suggest the chef not try to butcher authentic thai recipes. Edit. Ok so I am no Thai expert but I love this place. 1/2 priced apps at the bar for happy hour are a steal. I tried the Beef Satay and it was so tender and tasty. The Calamari with sweet chili dipping sauce is great. I also sampled the red Curry chicken(heat level 2) which was amazing. This place is a hidden gem. First off the restaurant has a great ambience to it and it looked like a place you would bring a date to. But if you ask me, a restaurant should focus on it's food and make it tasty and authentic especially if it's a bit out of the way like this place. The pad thai lacked flavor and even at a 3 spice setting it was bland and the pork was overcooked. The panang curry seemed watered down for some reason. And definitely the thai tea was watered down. I'm not sure if they've ever had real thai flavors but I really wanted more for the price which was almost double those of a normal thai restaurant. I wish this place was good instead of just being pretentious. I mean who wants to listen to ava maria while eating bland/bad thai food? EDIT: Seven years later, the owner starts messaging me back and forth about my review with the most nasty attitude. I blocked one account, and 2 more show up from the same owner. Talk about an owner who should be in the kitchen educating their cooks on Thai food or servers on manners. I blocked the other 2 accounts, one being straight from the restaurant and forwarded it to yelp for harassment. Apparently she was either following people who gave them bad reviews or reading good reviews on other Thai restaurant pages but this woman will harass you incessantly. Also she will match your credit card name to your yelp account and harass you about your review in that manner. Seems personal privacy is not a concern to them. You can see a lot of people who make reviews are called out by her by their name and credit card. As if yelling back at your unsatisfied customers earns you their hard earned money again. Go read the bad reviews and make up your own mind (before they're erased/edited). Worst restaurant experience of a lifetime and it's just Thai. Lol. read more

OK -- we've been going to Merlion since we moved here a year ago. We've consistently loved the place -- we've lived in San Fran, Vancouver, Boston and DC -- and we'd put this place up against some of the best Thai restaurants we've eaten at. To be fair -- we've been a few times where the service has been a little slow - but they've always recognized it and apologized or thrown a free drink at us. Here's why I'm floating a new rating w/ 5 stars. I wouldn't say we're "regulars" that they know by sight -- but last month I called to book a res for my wife's birthday...and passed that info along to them. W/ out asking (or charging us for it), they had a table set up w/ a BDay theme, provided a free bottle of champagne -- and went out and got a Birthday Cake! Truly made the evening special. The hubby & I have this bad habit of waiting till most restaurants are closed to start looking for dinner on a weekday. You know, one of those days when you get home late from work & too lazy to cook. Thanks to Merlion Restaurant for having such strange hours just for peeps like me (especially for the Clear Lake area)! Hours: Monday: closed Tue/Wed/Sun: 5pm - midnight Thur - Sat: 5pm - 2am (wow! 2am?....oh, they have a bar...no wonder.) Nice ambience. Clean. Single stall restroom. Bar section on the right side, restaurant on the left. Available outside eating area. Tasty Thai food. Friendly wait staff (not so attentive, but at least friendly). We had the Kan Kua Sapparos chicken ($14, yellow curry with crushed pineapple) and Kang Ped duck ($18, red curry bamboo tips and squash). Also had my fave thai tea and for dessert....can't remember...it was some sort of raspberry cake (yum!) Will come back the next time we're starving late at night. read more

Even though it was late on a Sunday night and there were few people in the dining room, the place is just too loud (as it was about 6 months earlier on our last visit). Also, the lighting from the central chandelier is extremely harsh. Everyone at our table was disappointed about those things and more. Fortunately the food is still excellent. I just wish they'd do something about the atmosphere, it is nothing like it was in the old location. Suggestions to owner: We were the last ones in the dining room and tried turning off the chandelier as we were leaving...wow, what a difference. It is an LED fixture and likely has a very low (i.e. poor) CRI. Suggest you dim it way down, or turn it off completely. Do something about the noise, like curtains or other soft materials. The barn doors help, but they were only closed for about 2 minutes out of the 90 minutes we were there. read more

Merlion - their symbol is a lion's head on a fish's body. It's Thai food at a converted house in old Seabrook. I came in through the bar, where they were playing 80's disco music. Fortunately, the music switched to jazz and big band when I went into the dining area. The place is small - maybe 20 tables between two dining rooms. Large abstract paintings on the wall by some local artist. It's dark. Tan tile floor, low black ceilings, dark red walls broken up with black/white patterned wallpaper, black chairs, black tablecloths, track halogen lighting. I wished I'd brought a flashlight for the menu. Fortunately there were some Christmas lights strung on the wall by my table. The entree pricing scheme is unusual - a different fixed price for the meat (beef, chicken, scallops, lamb, lobster.) Then a choice of 5 curries or 8 stir-fries. I explained I was eating low-carb and wanted no rice or noodles. The waitress was helpful discussing the sauces. When the food came she brought out a large dish of rice, looked at me, whistled, and took it back to the kitchen. I chose the green curry with lamb. It came with a thick savory coconut-milk sauce, with basil, bamboo shoots and yellow squash. This dish was fantastic! I practically licked the bowl clean. I just had two cavils. There wasn't a whole lot of lamb meat in the dish. And the waitress didn''t ask me how spicy-hot I'd like it; the kitchen made it about 2-star hot and she brought me a bowl of red chili oil so I could kick it up; I'd have rather had the heat added in the kitchen. Service was attentive and friendly but not exceptional. My lamb was $18. Somebody's been reading the restaurant-trade magazines closely: the prices were all whole dollars, no cents, no decimal places, and the prices were kind of minimized on the menu, far from the text that described the dishes. The waitress brought my check and I laid some bills out At the end of the dining room was a door with a MENS ROOM sign on it. I went through - and found myself back in the bar! Which was still playing disco. But wandering through the bar I found another MENS ROOM sign and it really did take me to the men's room. In there, there was a large TABC telling me in 3 bullet-points in English and Spanish that I shouldn't drink alcohol if I am pregnant or might be pregnant. Good point, but why post it in the men's bathroom? Back at my table, the waitress had shorted me $0.28 my change. Oh well, it just comes out of the tip. Outdoors they have a lovely bricked patio, with tables, twinkle lights, blooming rosebushes and a firepit. On a warmer evening this would have been lovely romantic. I'll come again; next time I'll bring my wife. Merlion is only open for dinner, but they're thinking of opening for lunch in January '10. I'll check it out. read more

Merloin on 4th went above and beyond for our anniversary! They made it so special and it meant so much to us. It was our first time in the restaurant. Great service, great ambiance and the food was perfect! We had the dumplings and Thai egg rolls for an appetizer. The egg rolls were my personal favorite. My husband had the pad Thai and I had the green curry with beef. Food portions were big. The wine list is HUGE and our waitress helped us narrow down a good choice based on our preferences. We had a party of four tonight at Merlion in Seabrook to take advantage of their participation in Houston Restaurant Month. Our reservation was messed up by Open Table but they gave us a great table and canceled the incorrect reservation for us. The special menu for restaurant month offered some delicious choices. We tried the mini satay and the mini crab rolls for first courses. Satay kabobs were delicious as was the dipping sauce. Second course we selected the shrimp and the prime rib curry. Both were delicious, creamy and perfectly balanced. Dessert was coconut ice cream with crushed peanuts and a cheesecake with ice cream. We had the mussels for our appetizer. Boyfriend had the lamb lollipops. It was one of the specials of the night. I had the panang curry with scallops. I had been to the original Merlion years ago, and I knew it washed away in the storm so it wasn't on my radar. Looking in Open Table it kept popping up, so out of the blue I called to see if we could get a reservation on the fly, and we did. I love having a place so close to home, it's quaint, it was full of locals, and the staff was really nice. It wasn't a restaurant that the staff was at your table every 5 minutes, "is it ok, anything else" you enjoyed your wine, then your appetizer then your main course, you were not rushed in and out! We started with the Dragon Fire Dumplings, then I went with the Merlion Thai Peanut sauce curry with shrimp, and partner tried the Suaras fried rice and we ended with the mango-sticky rice. We shared everything, and took leftovers home. Chef does a great job of the fusion, it was a great meal and we'll be back with friends. read more

Disappointed!! Great food but terrible experience!! Waited about 30 minutes to even see a waitress. We had our order ready by that time and waited at least another 30 minutes for our drink order. Finally got our appetizer after over another hour and our dinner didn't come out until we complained which took forever after finishing our appetizers. Everyone around us (who were even seated after us) were getting their food and even finished eating before we finally got our dinner. Friday, we went to Merlion. As always, the food was amazing. We had a leisurely 3 hour meal. Remember when you go to Merlion, you are not eat fast food, you are dining. I just wish we could get our drinks a little faster. Sometimes I feel a little forgotten when we first sit. But they come round eventually. It does give us plenty of time to chat with our friends and family. This is our favorite restaurant and we like to come here as often as we can. at this point we have tried everything on the menu. The worst things I can say is that the portions are ample and the peppers spicy. My husband loves spicy food while I prefer just to have the peppers wafted over my food symbolically. He always orders a 5 and enjoys every burning bite, but my dishes, while mellow, are still amazingly flavorful. They have a wide variety of meats and the wine list is extensive. This time when were seated, Brooke brought out a special surprise just for us. She had a signed bottle of our favorite wine, the Revelry Riesling, that she gave us as a gift. We love the personal attention we always receive when we are there. We can't wait to go back. read more

Good Thai restaurant for the area. We've been to the previous location several times and the food quality hasn't changed. I do wish their spice levels were more consistent though, but our experience may have been a result of having a group of 13 and ordering off the Houston Restaurant Weeks menu (although I wouldn't consider that a good excuse). I ordered spice level 3 of 5 which was fairly mild for me. My fiancé ordered level 5, which normally I would expect to be burn-your-face-off Thai hot, but it wasn't nearly there. Otherwise, all the flavors were spot on. I took off one star for the spice level, but a second star for the atmosphere. While it is obvious that they are trying to go for a more classy vibe, they are not quite achieving it. The decor and layout is fine, but where they really go wrong is having different music in the bar area than in the dining areas. These areas are only separated by sliding doors which don't always get fully closed when someone passes through, so what happens is an awkward mix of club-y music with more appropriate quiet dining music. While that may not bother some, it was definitely a topic of conversation among my group. Anyway, the food is definitely worth the price. They could improve by actually having Thai level spicy as their hottest (at least not dumbing it down for the white guy who orders it), but I'm guessing for most of the clientele, it's fine as it is. The music is a simple fix. I'd definitely come back here, but maybe just for takeout. read more

Since it was restaurant week I got an appetizer entreee and dessert the appetizer dumplings were spectacular and to eat I don't remember which curry I got but it was delicious and for dessert I got two the coconut milk ice cream and the red velvet cake they were both good but I preferred the coconut milk ice cream I would 100% recommend this place to anyone living/staying in the area read more

LOVED the Raad Prick curry, it was authentic tasting and the sauce had a great kick at level two. A level three would have been to hot and usually get 4 on the hot scale. We have been going to this place for years and the food improved and the alcohol selection expanded considerably (tons of wines by the glasses, more cocktails) with the new location. However, the last couple of trips were really, really slow (45 minutes from order to entrée arriving). The food was excellent and since we had an appetizer it was not too bad but we were also one of the earliest tables so it couldn't have been due to being busy. Waiter forget the extra sauce he had promised me when I ordered and his attempt to see if we wanted dessert was so half hearted we lost interest. But what finally got to me this last time is the artwork. And for perspective I am a liberal male. I always overlooked the nudes in the wallpaper at the new location. And most of the art on the walls (for sale I think) often has nudes - but this time it was all nudes or erotica. Over the men's urinal is a painting which I am sure is meant to be fun of 3 women laughing, pointing at you and making the 'tiny' gesture as they pretend to take a photo of you. Ok, funny, but with all the other artwork I feel like the place is being run now by my college roommate and it surprises me this is the type of place they think will do well in 2019. read more

My husband and I have been coming here since we moved to Houston nearly 3 years ago. Best Thai food I've ever had, definitely worth the wait (IF the kitchen is slow)!! The staff and management are great! Merlion is a family, and everyone is welcome! I would recommend a reservation if you want to sit in the dining room.
