I've been here a few times over the years and I really enjoy the atmosphere. The steam rooms are plenty and they are clean. The food is great and overall decent prices. The staff is friendly/polite. People of various backgrounds come here, not just older Russian men, which there are a lot of, but again, they are nice.. like a bunch of my dads in one room. Everyone is super friendly and always wants to give you tips on where to sit in the steam room. lol.. thanks guys, I know my limits! If you are not Russian and you think the staff to be rude or inattentive, just go up to them and be nice and give them your order. This is a homey atmosphere, no need to sit at your table and pout. Came here today with my brother in law and my dad! DO NOT FORGET FLIP FLOPS ! They charge $10 for a pair that you need to return, soooooo save yourself the money for sure. Adult entry is $45, senior citizens $40. They give you towels, just remember flip flops, a comfortable bathing suit and a plastic bag to later put your wet bathing suit into. I also brought a clay mask to do in the locker room, my body wash and a moisturizer though they do supply body wash. I believe they have four dry saunas and one steam room. They also have a cold cave, a hot tub and two cold pools. The entire facility is very clean and the employees are always refreshing the towels and water like clockwork. You are also able to get food/drinks, I got a pot of green tea and my dad and brother in law got beers and dried fish. While I was waiting for my dad and brother in law to get out of the men's locker room, I put on a clay mask that I brought from home. Oh, you also have the option of getting a massage or platza, I haven't, but that option is available to you if you please. I would recommend coming here if you want to appreciate the purported health benefits of going to a sauna or just spend some time with friends. read more

Considering there are only about 2 other places like this one in NYC, its decent. It can be bigger cause the floor plan is terrible. But I'll still be back! The food is great and authentic. Considering that this is still one of the ONLY spas of this nature in NYC it's very clean for NYC's public area standards. Don't want drama? Don't go at peak times! Prices are alright despite recent circumstances. I see many adverse comments regarding staff, I mean, they are post-Soviet expats, it's expected. There's a way to communicate with them to get the best out of your experience. The locker rooms are cramped because of the poor floor planning. Best Russian banya in Brooklyn. Good food, nice atmosphere and relaxing. This is a place, where you can spend hours with friends or as a couple and just chill. The steam rooms are super hot (good thing), food is not cheap but don't be surprised, it's NYC. Not giving it a 5 star because the changing rooms/showers need major improvements: For $45 entrance, I would expect some toiletries in the the showers, e.g. shower gel, conditioner, shaving cream, Q tips , gels. Both Napoleon and Hitler failed to appreciate the Russian tolerance for pain, particularly in terrible weather. History might have been different had they visited a Russian bath house. When Americans pay for a spa, they expect serenity: relaxing massages with exotic oils, scented candles and Enya (or the sound of the tide) wafting over the speakers. Maybe a waterfall, zen garden, a mud mask or cucumbers on the eyes. By contrast, Russians like extremes: Baking one's self into a dripping, molten mess in a 120 degree dry sauna, then jumping into a tub of ice-cold water, is a welcomed challenge. Or sit in a room full of hot steam so thick you can't see 3 feet, then move to what's essentially a walk (sit) in freezer. Hang out in a big Jacuzzi or sit in a wet sauna where someone is throwing water over white-hot rocks. Or get be beaten with giant clumps of oak leaves along the way. It's an experience of extremes, but done at your own pace, seemingly over many hours. It helps to have drinks... which they do. In fact, that's the thing I really liked about the experience. I'd never been to a bath-house, which previously conjured up thoughts or bark, dank dens of debauchery. This place, however was bright, modern and full of families and their friends... and because I had tweaked my back and thought some hot/cold treatment might help, I thought I'd give it a shot. Basically you pay for entrance ($35 day) and get a locker and key. You then change into a bathing suit in a locker room and head inside. There's a large, central hall in which people camp for hours at tables... chatting, drinking, reading, watching soccer on the TV, playing games or simply hanging out. It's then up to you what to do. Hit the saunas. Hit the Jacuzzi. You can order snacks or full meals and European beers. It seemed that others brought in their own food/drinks, which didn't seem to be a problem. If you want to order something, you simply give the servers your key number and then settle your tab when you leave the building. I paced myself by grabbing a small table, trying out the extreme sports, then returning to my seat to relax with a book, before trying some more. Now that I'm initiated to the experience, I'd be happy to return and would likely plan a bit better (bring a book, robe, snacks, bevs and a group of friends), plus carve out a full day to enjoy the total escape. As mentioned, there's a big range of people, ages, body sizes and most are very friendly since this is a social thing in Russian culture - not a Vegas pool party scene. At the very least you can "visit" Russia for the cost of a couple of movie tickets and a train ride to Coney Island. read more

This is, by far, the best banya (spa) in Brooklyn. It's huge, caters to a large and diverse population, and has ample room for relaxing, eating and having a great time with friends. It's a bit out of the way, if you don't live in nearby Seagate or Coney Island, and there's free parking (unless the lot is full, in which street parking is also available), or take the bus that drops you off a block or so away. There are three hot saunas, one steam room (wet sauna), a cold sauna, two ice pools, and a jacuzzi. There are several tables where you can either dine in, or bring your own food, and there is a space outside where you can go to smoke or (if it's warm enough) sit in the sun. Each hot sauna has a different temperature and level of humidity. It's a bit on the pricey side, but most bathhouses in New York are. The nice thing is, you pay and you can stay for 2 hours or the whole day, if you so choose. You have the opportunity to book a massage with the staff there, and you can pay someone to get the venik treatment, or, you can come with friends and make your own (you can find birch tree branches in nearby Marine Park - seriously, it's that easy). The staff here are uncharacteristically friendly, and often times, you'll see them take their breaks in the saunas themselves. The locker rooms are immaculately clean, which is a huge, huge plus in my book. They provide you with a lock, and you can change and walk straight in the banya area. The best time to go is the winter, but this is also, understandably, the most busy times, so arrive early or go on a weekday. Towels are at the ready and are washed throughout the day, so it's rare to have a shortage. It is my belief that everyone should experience the wonders that is the Russian banya, and this is the place to go for the best experience. read more

Best banya ever. At least that I've experienced so far. It's very out of the way. Even if you take a train, I think it's a half-hour walk. The baths are reached through the locker rooms, which is nice (no scurrying out into the lobby in your bathing suit!). Front desk is very clean and bright, locker rooms are big and nice (good showers). First room we did was the steam room. Steam was pretty good, not the hottest I've done, but still very good. A man added pine oil (even though there are signs everywhere saying not to do exactly that), but he asked us first if it was ok, and the smell was heavenly. After that, we checked out the schvitz. This was a very hot room, very nice! I actually got a little dizzy after 5 minutes! Cool water sink for dousing. The Russian room was fabulous. Classic banya. No English to be heard, which is always a good sign. The thing that eternally disappoints is that I have yet to figure out how to get platza. At the Russian and Turkish Baths, people just offer it. Here, I feel like I need to go up and ask (something I don't do well). We also checked out the ice sauna. Awesome! Just a big snowy cold room. My blood vessels were going nuts! Oh, and speaking of ice sauna: the best cold plunges ever! There are literally ice machines dumping cubes in every few minutes! Just going in and coming out was enough to leave me numb! Time to relax and grab some grub! Tables are set up in the center, with a place to order on the side. But you can honestly just grab a seat and within a few minutes someone will show up and ask if you'd like something. Pierogies were phenom! And tea and brown bread was delicious. The Jacuzzi is NOT BROKEN!!! You have to turn it on yourself. I'm not sure why, but that's how it goes. If you're facing the tub, look to the left. There are the dials on the wall. Once it gets going, it's super nice. I'm not a huge fan of jacuzzis, because they're giant bacterial stews, but a few minutes probably isn't going to kill me. Besides, it smelled very chlorinated. Horrible service, rude personal, won't be back!!!!! Went for a gilrs night at Russian banya. I would say banya is very authentic, nice and clean but the service... words can't describe. Had a dinner at this place as well, was waiting for our food for an hour and 30 min (they had only 2 tables while we were there). Waitress was constanly reminded regarding our order but there was no attention to or table what so ever. When plates finally came out she dropped them off on the table like it was meant for dogs with Russian obsene words. Really? This is the first time I have ever experience something like that. I truly wish she gets fired and they will take a look at the staff they are hiring very carefully. Manager did nothing to solve this issue. When it come to banyas, or spas, I don't mess around. I got my venik prepared 24 hours before, ready to be unleashed on a body in need of heat therapy. It's an art, really. And in the steam room - I am the fucking Picasso, son! I don't bother with the crappy saunas that are really just big pools with a couple of warm rooms around. This one, however, meets my standards. It has a dry steam room, a wet steam room, a wooden sauna, and an aromatherapy room that releases steam onto which you can sprinkle some eucalyptus oil. As long as you don't get a shvitzer who is still cold from the outside to come in and add a gallon of hot water onto the rocks, the steam is generally very good - an essential necessity for me to "paint" someone with my venik. After a beating, there is a very cold dipping pool that you will want to jump into after the intense heat. Just make sure to move down your testicles from your esophagus to their original location when you leave. As you exit the rooms, you will also find a "healing wall." It's a long bench that goes around and the back of it is a covered stone wall. The idea here is you sit while your body gradually readjusts to the temperature while your back gets a nice warm sensation. A new addition to this spa is the ice room. It's best to visit it immediately after the steam rooms and has a great benefit to strengthening your immune system. As you rest in between the visits, treat yourself to some tea, served with a side of honey and jam, or a snack like french fries with mushrooms, roasted fish of the day, or both. They have a full menu of goodness. There is also an outside patio where you can lay down and cover yourself up with towels to get some fresh air. So, if this is your first time or if you are a regular, you can appreciate this place all the same. And if you see me working the veniks, don't be shy - stop by and say hello. read more

The space is well thought-out with a lot of attention to detail. The staff keeps the banya running efficiently with a constant supply of clean towels, clean sauna rooms, and buckets of water refills in each room for maximum heat-generating. Awesome outside area with designated smoking zone. The scene is hit or miss but definitely go with friends so you have your own scene. If you've never been to one of these before I suggest just observing what the older crowd is doing and follow suit. But the basics are: you go in and out of the sauna rooms shocking your body with cold water in between. You steam and take breaks. You sit at a table and chill, eat, drink tea, read or play cards. Repeat. Pro tip: The platza guys are pros. Make sure to get a platza service for the ultimate body high and a full banya experience. read more

Absolutely the worst. From the moment you enter the staff is rude and unwelcome. The dressing rooms are stark with little room to maneuver. Not particularly comfortable to have to squeeze by people when nude. Not to mention, the locker room door opens RIGHT onto the coed hallway. No barrier, nothing. My locker happened to be near the door, and it was very uncomfortable having to worry about guarding my privacy when I just wanted to relax and treat myself. The spa itself is DIRTY, crowded, and wet everywhere. If you don't have flip flops (or want to buy some there for $20) be prepared to feel gross and have sore feet from the rubber mats. There is one steam room, one cold room, two cold pools, and two (maybe three?) saunas. I could not believe people pay $45 to go here! For those kind of features I might as well go to NYSC practically. Also, many spa goers have a tendency to walk into a sauna and without even acclimating or asking the others, dumping water on the stones and making it super humid - rude. Oh, and the restaurant. When we wanted to eat, it was crowded but there were several empty tables waiting to be cleared off. When we asked for a table, the waitress said "As you see, it's full. You should go to the other side." So we went to the other side, where the seats had cushions - not looking like spa seating - no one was arund, and no one in the kitchen took notice. We finally convinced someone to clean a table back in the main seating area so we could eat. We did have one nice server, a brunette lady, but we only got her once, too bad for us. Waited, waited, waited...my meal took forever, and when asked about it, was told it was a mixup, and given attitude like it was our fault. Lots of loud drunken rowdies drinking buckets of beer. The crowd isn't diverse, and I didn't feel like they were particularly welcome to outsiders. Not relaxing. OMG AND NO FREE WATER! I think that is dangerous, irresponsible and cruel. Well, technically I guess I could drink from the bathroom tap. I am used to Spa Castle out in Queens, which has about twice as many amenities...in the single sex area ALONE, not counting the numorus saunas, light areas, jacuzzis and the water spa/park in the coed area. Their locker room is airy, clean and private, and staff and restaurant servers are great. Tons of free shampoo, lotion, etc. and reasonable purchase items. Plus, uniforms are given so you don't have to look at nasty hairy men. And it's the same price (less on weekdays). Unless you dig getting poor service and value, take your money to Spa Castle. read more

Came here twice by recommendation with friends and each time we left feeling relaxed and satisfied. This banya has everything a Russian spa needs to have: the saunas are scorching HOT, the ice boxes are subfreezing COLD and the steam room is wet & smell like clean herb. Plus there is a intermediate ice sauna to get a feeling of sitting in a freezer while the beer remains cool.Clients are really friendly. One of my friend received a free beating of the venik by the Russians when she asked. No matter how busy it is, we managed to get a big table to sit around for hours with our groups while we venture between different rooms. Their food menu is good. I've seen large portion of fresh fruits, steamed grayish and salad being served to Russian clienteles. The beer is good and huge portion. The best of all, you can bring your own food and (alcoholic) drink in. Somehow those who did still ended up ordering beer or food from the facility. Pros: BYOB and bring your own food is allowed. We played like naughty Catholic school boys when my bf and I went to the Mermaid Spa. Nothing like a - what do New Yorkers call it... a schvitz. What fun in the sauna, steam room, and jacuzzi until all the stress just shot right out of us. Talk about a religious experience, I almost couldn't get the hymn out of my mouth. I was enjoying myself that much. Babies and babettes, run or grab a cabbie (if your tootsies are too tired) to the Mermaid Spa in Brooklyn. Never heard of an ice tub/bath but that was the craziest thing I've ever done. It's was freezing! Haha but everyone there must either be used to it or have crazy human strength. Lol. And omg! That massage. It was amazing. I think my massuese's name was Yuri. He was awesome! Haven't had such a good massage in a long time. My husband & I went to Mermaid Spa on a date last night, and had a great time! We were both bath house novices, but we found the staff and fellow bathers to be very friendly, helpful, and welcoming. They gave us tips on what to start with, how to sauna "properly," and one friendly man even shared some of his pine-scented essential oil! The spa rooms, changing room & towels were all very clean; we can't comment on the food because we didn't eat there, but we did see lots of very intriguing plates full of seafood, salads, and other Russian specialties! I've been going to this place for about ten years and it's usually a mixed bag. On the upside, the steam rooms themselves are hot and exquisite. On the downside, the service which was mediocre at best in the past is currently averaging between atrocious and wtf. If you ever wanted to know what it feels like to be a patron in mother Russia then this is the place for you. We've arrived with four people and one of them is a senior citizen. The person at the counter rang him up full price. When asked to change it, there was a lot of lip about how it's our fault that we didn't explicitly tell her that our 75 year old guest was 75 years old. It set up a bad start. Food is as decent if you can flag a waiter. You can no longer bring your own booze which wasn't the case in the past and it feels like you're an uninvited guest at someone else's home throughout your experience here. I feel like this is our last experience here. Next time we will go elsewhere. read more

Fantastic authentic Russian banya. You can come and hang for hours. Facilities are very very clean. A few different saunas, a wet steam room with Eucalyptus oil aromatherapy, a dry steam, a few cold dips, a whirlpool and my personal fave, the ice sauna!! The restaurant is in the middle of the space, and it's great to put the bathing on hold for bit to chill out with some yummy food and let the detox settle in. Fantastic way to get out of the city, schvitz with some Russian families, and sweat out those toxins. Very difficult to get to without a car, pretty off the beaten track. Admission price for the day is $35. If you don't speak Russian they might look at you funny, but once you're in, everyone is family. read more

Yes, yes, yes and yes - there aren't words to describe how wonderful Mermaid Spa is! Tucked at the entry to Sea Gate, this is like a door to a different world - relaxing, fulfilling, happy and healthful. For several years, I was a regular card-member at the Tenth Street Russian and Turkish baths in Manhattan - still one of my favorite haunts. However, once I became a member of the Coney Island Polar Bear Club, the Mermaid was revealed to me by fellow Bears - and boy, were my eyes opened. This place is a much larger facility, with beautiful dry heat and steam rooms, a vast menu filled with wonderful foods and beverages, hot tubs, massage services and more. It has so much more room overall for socializing - a huge part of the bathhouse culture. It's just incredible overall. The entry fee includes all-day use of the rooms and pools - bring your liniment, massage oils and venik (oak-leaf massage bundle). These are available for purchase as well, if need be. Shorts, robes and plastic shower shoes are provided, but those in the know bring their own. If this is new to you, please don't be insecure or hesitant to try it! I admit to being a bit nervous initially, but trust me - there are all sorts of body types, and once the heat comes into your body, you'll rapidly forget all cares. It's a truly transporting experience - and you'll frankly wonder why it isn't more common in this country. I can't recommend this place passionately enough. Just go - it's a bargain, and almost like a drug. Once you're in, you're hooked. Have fun. read more

So I understand they don't want anything made of glass in the spa, safety first right? But the manager of the place decides it's more important to enforce angrily this rule than the one that says you have to wear a face mask. Only myself and the workers wore any type of masks. This is our favorite Russian Banya in NYC now that Okeanos has closed. Unlike any of the Manhattan banyas, there is an ice-spa as well which is great to alternate with one of the steam or dry heat rooms. Also, you can sit outside under the trees and relax without any extraneous noise from elevated trains, cars, etc because Mermaid is so off the beaten path. Bring your own wine and vodka and enjoy it with some of the excellent pelmini from the kitchen. read more

4 stars instead of 5 because this place is pricey. It's pretty great, though. Better than the old one used to be before it burned down. It's very clean and big, with 6 or 7 wet and dry steam rooms, ice pools, a hot tub (ask them to turn on the jets if they don't ask you first), an ice sauna (ie an ice box), unlimited towels, and a nice little restaurant. They also have several outdoor sections with beach chairs in the sun and in the shade as well as places that are completely in the shade where you can sit and relax. The food isn't bad either. We shared harcho, home style potatoes, the assorted smoked fish plate (excellent), the panzanelle salad (very good), and the beef cheeks. Spent 4 hours here and everyone left relaxed and happy. There were four of us and, between the admission and the food, we spent something like 70 bucks per person, which is pricey for mermaid. If you want to save money, they allow you to bring your own food and beverages, so there's that. read more

Traditional Russian banya, ommon to the area as there is a heavy Russian presence in the community. The prices are on the high side, however you will rarely find something cheaper around here. $45 to get in is the going rate and Neck Road as well. However Here you get a bit more for your money. Ce here with a few friends who were new and wanted the Russian exoerience. They loved the decor as everything seems clean and well managed. There are 3 different dry sauna rooms and a wet one too. 2 cold water pools and a big jacuzzi. The crowd is not overly loud as most people tend to just sit and mellow out. I personally really like to sit in the ice room for a bit after a long time in the dry sauna. The food is also pretty good but on the price side. I tend to stick with tea and a plate of Borscht on occasion. And if the Giants are doing well might get a beer on a Sunday. Overall a great time that can extend for the whole day, but be ready to pay a bit in the 60-70 range. P.S. bringing your own snacks is a bit frowned upon but small container of nuts and fruit are usually not a problem. A water contained might also be a good idea as there are no water fountains. read more

Experience at Marmaid spa restaurant on Coney Island ave in Brooklyn last night. After we were waiting for 2 hours to get the food kindly asked when it will be ready... And waitress and chef cursed on me saying that I should go back on the waiting line since he has only 2 hands or may be I would like to cancel my order or they will make dumplings for me.. I asked to speak to the manager.. after that instead of apology or free desert waitress literally threw plates on our table saying "... ...." before manager came up to us ... and chef screamed calling me "..."...Shocked.. Whoa. Super mini-vacation within NYC limits. Here was my day: Soak, steam, cold plunge, steam again, soak. massage. repeat first part. wrap myself in towels and chill out on outdoor patio until heart rate returns to normal. Pretty awesome all around. This place is all about saunas - the hot tub was kinda on the lukewarm side. Maybe that's not a Russian thing, but could have been a few degrees hotter. But who cares really - the saunas!!!! So many choices of ways to steam it out. Heat therapy. Icy cold plunges so you can just keep going. Saw the ice sauna too - pretty intense, frosty on the walls, just like crawling in a freezer. Know lots of people that do the platza, still a bit freaked out by being beaten with a bunch of leaves. But then I watched several people get it - more like being whisked all over with leaves, not as intensely beat-y as I'd thought. Kind of a whole ritual and rhythm to it. Warming up to the idea, partly due to how many people there were having it done - like all of them. Can this many people be wrong? And, warmed "recovery" bench was truly awesome place to chill out - literally, except it keeps your back warm - and take in the scenery. Only reason its not 5 stars is hot tub temp. Went here a year and half ago and loved it but it was a weekday. Came here on Saturday and was moderately full of guests but just a sour dour group of people. Not being a Russian had us getting the hairy eye it seemed. To the point where almost every room we went into a patron would load up the water in the stove to get the room intensely hot and then walk out ostensibly the effect of toying with us. Not sure if that what was the deal but it left an impression. I've been going to the East Village for over 10 yrs and the mixed crowds make for a much better experience. The rooms are weirdly sized so it always feels like there's no space. Fairly clean not bad. Heat is good, the ambiance is drab east European farm kitsch. And it's in the middle of no where so it's a hike. read more

Come to this place pretty regularly but today is the last time. Just plain filthy and the saunas are in bad shape. Worst of all is the ownership because it allows people to get intoxicated and bother guests. Just a problem waiting to happen. Absentee owner who doesn't seem to care about the place. read more

The receptionist was in a bad mood! Either you leave something or no keys for lockers! Lockers are right on top of each other and room to move! Dirty showers!!!! In the sauna people hit themselves with leaves (I'm guessing one way of cleansing), so making strange noises and left behind leaves all over the place! There was a lady that was folding towels when i took the folded ones, she gave me attitude why are we taking folded and how we should take it directly from laundry basket. At some point, we decided to sit by the table areas and one of the staffs asked us to switch table because we're only 6 even though the spa was empty. We didn't have a good experience and wasn't worth it. read more

They kicked me out of the table where I just took a sit by to chill for a minute or smth since there is no established place for that at all which is beyond inconvenient. They said a big group of people coming so I gotta choose another table even I didn't plan even to sit there, just was looking where I can relax for a bit. And of course none came to that table for another hour and half. And there is no free water there! Kinda crazy and not sure it's not braking any business codes or laws since first: it's the sauna where your body consistently getting dehydrated, second: they serving food there. Food prices are ridiculous btw. I've been to every Banya in NY and NJ. In my opinion Mermaid Spa is the best. The Saunas are always clean and hot. The Ice room is great. And its proximity to the beach makes it perfect in the summer. The Restaurant is ok and isn't to over priced read more
