So, let me tell you about Merrifield Garden centers. I have been to many many landscape and garden centers over the years. I know quite a few that have been put out of business because of the chain home improvement stores. When you go to Merrifield, you will be bathed in the amazing living variety that can be brought to your home, for indoors and outdoors. The selection is beyond anything I've ever seen, and the staff clearly loves the business. You can browse hundreds of plant and flower options indoors And they also have an amazing selection of patio adornments. The best was my experience today. I needed a garden hose adapter. Sounds simple enough, but this is so uncommon that all of the local chains didn't have anything, and one young man in an orange apron Ron suggested I just get it on Amazon. I stopped here at Merrifield, and they also did not have it in stock. But the gentleman at the counter Suggested that he'd be happy to make one for me if I wouldn't mind waiting for a few minutes. And he jumped into action, grabbing the hose and fittings that he needed and manufactured what I needed for me on the spot. That his old-fashioned service deserves a lot more than just five stars. I know little-to-nothing about managing plant life and was trying to figure out how to fix some patchy spots on my lawn. I've heard great things about Merrifield and though I've visited before, I hadn't bought anything. I took some pics of my lawn, some of the current grass/weeds/plants growing and went to their help desk. It was mid-week, so not too busy. Craig was working the desk and so I don't bury the lead... he was AMAZING. I explained what I was trying to do, that I really knew nothing, and though I had done a little research, I didn't want to trust everything I had read/watched. He walked me through my options. I don't care much about what is growing, just that we have good coverage. Clover was something I was interested in. He explained the clover options as well as some low-maintenance grass options. He even spent a lot of time helping me understand about aerating since it was something I wanted to know more about. I decided to go with grass and clover, hoping a mix might balance between lawn and something for the pollinators. As the spots were relatively small, he said I could just hand spread, especially with the clover seeds being so tiny. While prices are a little higher than the big box stores, looking into this, the products seem to be of a higher quality. Luckily my issue was sort of small to start with so I felt it was a good investment. read more

I love going to Merrifield Garden Center in the spring and summer!! They have a beautiful and extensive selection of flowers, decor, wines, locally grown honey and the list goes on and on. I feel like a kid in a candy store whenever I'm there. Just going and browsing is a treat. They even have a cafe called the Silver Jug Cafe. The Reuben sandwich is really good. I stopped by Merrifield Garden Center in Gainesville, VA and had an incredible day shopping for outdoor and indoor plants to spruce up my living spaces. First off, the selection and varieties of plants is outstanding! Second, the decorative items is second to none! What a great store. Merrifield is a locally owned garden center with a great selection of outdoor and indoor plants. It has a knowledgeable and friendly staff. It's definitely worth a visit to learn about the different varieties of plants before you select ones that fit your gardening needs. And it provides free popcorn while you shop. Its Gainesville location has a large indoor store for home decor items. I recently learned that it will reopen its cafe in May 2024. I sampled the French toast and thought it was delicious. I was told that it was made with a pancake batter. I have a feeling that the cafe will be a popular place for Sunday brunch. read more

On this #ThankYouThursday its only right that I stop by and send a super thank you and a kudos to the team over at Merrifield Garden Center and sprinkle some praise and appreciation for what they are doing!! As they weather the pandemic and remain open for business so that their customers are able to come and find exactly what they need. For some, planting and gardening and yard improvements all the like a soothing task of self imposed therapy. I found myself here looking for some glowers to plant in the island in my front yard since the weather is breaking into nice temps and I wont have to worry about the not making it through the colder temps. The staff was great at helping me find exactly what I was looking for and even offered solid recommendations based on the height requirements I was looking to met based on my desired outcome. I love hoe diverse the selection is here from ground level flowers, hanging flowers and even herbs and veggies. As if the green thumb selection was not plentiful, I do enjoy looking at everything in the main house if you will from the nick nacks, trinkets, local jams and spread to even a pretty variety of wine to choose from. The cafe is closed so you cannot grab a bite to eat but that is not what you really came for right??? Some things can be a bit on the upper end of the price list yet the quality is not lacking and they do offer a military discount. If you are looking for the perfect plant or a new flower find, Merrifield Garden Center most likely has what you are looking for!! read more

This is a one stop shop for a gardening novice like me. They had everything I was looking for and excellent advice for problem areas. I have been shopping there for 3 years and everything purchased has survived my substandard skills. I have found their prices to be in line with other garden centers. The beautiful decorative items are quite pricey but offer wonderful ideas. The best thing is that there is always someone to help you! Big fan of Merrifield. I literally take my kids here as an outing/activity. They have free popcorn, little shopping carts, koi fish, swings, in the fall they have an adorable corn maze, they have the cutest Christmas stuff, it's so much more than a nursery. They just put in a dog park which is awesome, and they have so many indoor plants in the massive greenhouse They are also so knowledgeable. They have a plant clinic, they help with soil samples, and the cafe just opened back which is very exciting! The only thing I don't love about Merrifield is that it is pricey! You can normally find the same plants at Home Depot or Lowe's for way cheaper but I would do your fact finding and information fathering at Merrifield first! read more

You can easily lose 2-3 hours here perusing the thousand of merchandise they have to offer. You can easily log 5k steps ++ by walking the huge garden center. (Bring your fitbit) I like that they have a mini cafe. Didn't try it this time. I came to peruse their houseplants collection and I never fail to end up with something in my hand, when I always say that I would only come to look and not buy. I discovered this gem only a few months ago and wish I had found them earlier in the spring season when I started planting. This place is huge and a must-visit stop for anyone with indoor or outdoor plants. It three buildings in total and during non-Covid times, they have a cute little cafe area. I am a huge plant person and I actually flew into town from another state to help my friend (a local) pick out plants! Merrifield has remarkably healthy plants. They were pest free and very reasonably priced. They have everything you could want or need in your garden, plants, pest treatments, lawn items, pots, fertilizers and feed, the works. We went to two locations and were met with friendly staff and a clean store. My friend said she'd always wanted to come here and was so happy we did! I even bought two small pots of strings of spades to bring home with me. They were labeled as hearts but there's no Latin name between hearts and spades. I loved our visit here. If you live in Virginia and you want to get into plants, this should be your first stop. read more

I'm an active gardener that is used to New Jersey garden center prices. Merrifield has a wonderful selection but a little pricey for me. Still a lovely place to visit to explore. I was specifically looking for Paw Paw trees. The employees were extremely helpful and went out of their way to locate what inventory they had for fruit trees. Unfortunately, no Paw Paw trees in stocked. Regardless, the place earned my 5 stars for their committment. We did end up buying a hummingbird plant for a family member and a few small decorative bushes. I'm hoping to return after I do a bit more research on growing Kiwi in this area. It was a surprise to see them available here. We have a baby in a stroller and it was very easy to walk around, very family friendly. read more

I had such a great experience at this location! I was looking for Poppies and/or David Austen roses (both my boyfriend's mom's favorite) and was on the search for them desperately. I called all over NoVA. I lucked out with these perennials - the Shrub team was able to put the potted roses on hold for me so I made my way to the Gainesville location immediately. When I changed my mind and decided to go for a flower arrangement, I headed inside where Whitney asked if she could help. I gave her an idea of what I wanted and what my budget was. The very next morning when I went to pick up, I was over the moon in love with the arrangement. I wish I had a better picture because this doesn't do it justice, but she has such a good eye and provided great customer service. Definitely will come back to order more arrangements. It's so hard to find a really good nursery here in Virginia. I'm going to be honest and say almost all of them are really overpriced. However, prices are pretty high here as well but it seems consistent with every other place I've been. The difference here is the variety. They have soooooooo many plants and flowers. We were blown away by how much stock they have. They also label everything extremely well with descriptions and photos! This makes it easy if you aren't sure what something is or if it needs full sun etc. the layout of this place is great and they even have an inside store with decor items and indoor plants etc. This is a must go to in va for sure. The employees were really helpful as well: we were looking for a pawpaw tree and they didn't have any but the employee went and showed us where they would be and to see if they had it. read more

I love Merrifield! This facility is so nice and has every possible thing you could be looking for - cute home decor, tons of plants, soil, rocks, yard decorations...everything! It's always so well organized, clean, & well-stocked. Additionally, the staff is always so helpful & full of knowledge! They are quick to help answer questions, help find products, etc. I have also been able to bring in samples of soil/plants to find out if anything was wrong and what the plants are. Merrifield Garden Center (MGC) is working on a brand new location off of Wellington Road out in Gainesville, VA. For now, they have a small stock of stuff available and temporary buildings while construction continues on the permanent site. I stopped in here the other day to look around. I use to frequent the Fairfax and Merrifield MGC locations... The green house enclosure they are working on - from the road appears massive in size. I discovered this place about a year ago when I wanted to get more into plants. I mainly go to the greenhouse which is a pretty decent size with a lot of different plants. I've bought a ficus, bamboo, and snake plant from here and they've all held up pretty well. I think this place is great for beginners who want to dip their toes into gardening or house plants. It's also a great place for the experts out there. The one thing I will say is that I feel this place is on the pricer side. I've seen some of the exact same plants at home depot and walmart for a fraction of the price. Now I don't know if the quality is any different but just thought I'd put that out there. There's honestly nothing more to say than that I love it. They have so many variations of cacti and succulents that I couldn't find anywhere else. You have to check them out!!! Of course they have so many other plants like orchids and snake plants etc They also got an amazing arrangements of pots and also ha e soil and fertilizer. I've been going to this place for the past 5 years. I've bought numerous plants and garden stuff. I also frequent the cafe. The plants are good quality and they sell pretty decor. As other posters have mentioned, one dark haired cashier lady whose been working there awhile is not friendly and is rude and goes out of her way to purposefully not say anything and chooses who she greets and welcomes. The other younger and seasonal ones are very friendly, however. The cafe changes their hours according to the whim of their employees. They advertise that they close the cafe at 5 pm. I got there today at 4:15 pm and the two ladies told me they closed early because of "cleaning". Another time, I was going to eat there, I was told they closed early because of the weather (raining). When my son asked for a dog, I figured I'd ease him into taking care of living things so we checked out Merrifield to see what low maintenance plants they could offer. Not only are there beautiful plants, pots, and accessories of every variety, but there are people there willing to help. And we need a lot of help in the horticulture department. The salesperson helped us find a plant that we could manage and some pots on sale. If I repot a plant, I generally kill it (if I look at a plant, I generally kill it) so I asked the young lady to help us repot it and she happily assisted. She gave us detailed instructions and was very patient. Maybe if I'd gotten this personalized service at other places, I'd have a better track record. The prices were a little higher than you'd see other places, but I honestly didn't mind after such personalized service. It's a great place to take kids to look around and talk about nature. The place is expansive and the main greenhouse area is full of seasonal products with a good wine inventory to the side and a mediocre cafe in the back (typical sandwiches, salads, and soups -- all for under $10 though!). Good for strolling around. The nursery attached to the main greenhouse has a huge variety of plants, most of which you can find in your local home improvement/gardening depot. What makes this place special are its specialty items. A wide selection of miniature plants and craft items for hanging or desktop terraniums, bonsai planters, cute garden decorations (bird-feeders/windchimes), and even a koi fish nursery for your backyard pond? They've thought of almost everything! Yes, the price is steeper than other nurseries (so maybe get your bulbs elsewhere?), but it's definitely worth a visit. read more

Andy consulted with us for hours and was an absolute pleasure. He taught us quite a bit and showed real enthusiasm for what we are trying to create. Merrifield Garden Center in Gainesville has been absolutely awesome in my summer yard and garden projects. Everyone has been knowledgeable and helpful throughout this entire process. Replacing builder grade plants and garden beds in our new build home was not easy but the folks guiding me through sod placement and treatment made for much more of a personal and knowledgeable experience than big box store experiences. Not just a tip of the cap for knowledge but product quality! I know I'll spend a little bit more but I also know I'll get a MUCH better product. After laying sod and watching it thrive came the experience in putting a plan together to brighten up our front yard with plants, trees and shrubs. Again, top notch from the individuals helping to select the right products and sharing of knowledge on properly planting our selections. Lastly, Mario from the install team was fantastic in seeing my vision for a long term growth on several trees planted. Some were selected to help frame up our house with bright greens and some were selected to brighten it up with color. Install went off without a hitch! Keeping in mind the obvious electric lines ALSO keeping in mind our newly installed and unmarked irrigation lines, no problems whatsoever! He was even nice enough to take dug up, and presumably recycled, sod to fill in patches around our now great looking flower bed.
