My daughter and I researched numerous facilities in and around Morgan Hill, California, for many months. We were looking for the perfect Assisted Living residence for my 90 year old Mom. A large part of our decision to select Westmont of Morgan Hill was due to the confidence we felt in its Nurse Director, Ria Hernandez, to deliver the level of care and service we were looking for. Ria does an amazing job of keeping her Care Team functioning at peak performance in providing excellent care and genuine concern for my Mom and all the residents at Westmont. We are at the facility several days a week and are so delighted that Ria and her team are constantly checking in on Mom to make sure that she is comfortable and is receiving all the services she needs to feel safe and "at home." The facility is very clean and well maintained and we especially appreciate all of the creative, decorative touches the team provides at each and every holiday event. The residents there all seem happy and well cared for. It's like one big, happy family! We gladly refer friends and relatives to reach out to Ria if they are contemplating moving a loved one into Assisted Living or Memory Care. It's been such a relief to know that Mom has a loving, caring team to look after her every need in this chapter of her life. Linda & Jeannie (Mom's daughter & granddaughter)

Our experience with Westwind was fantastic, and I HIGHLY recommend the facility. Many organizations reflect the leader, and the leadership team at Westwind is first-rate. Steven, the Executive Director, is the even hand that keeps it all together. Parv, the Wellness Director, is an experienced registered nurse whose advice and loving care for my mother were invaluable to us. Erik, the Program Manager, was so reliable -- diligent about precisely coordinating my mother's pharmaceutical and care needs with the med techs and care workers who daily watched over her. Raina, the Business Manager, was professional and unwaveringly loving towards my difficult-to-handle mother. My family owes these blessed people a debt, for caring for my mother in ways that our own family could not. Westwind has 2 floors, with approximately 25 residents per floor. I visited almost every other day, and I don't recall one time where I saw less than 5 care workers plus a med tech on the floor. Not to mention the several janitorial and facility techs, the activities team, receptionist, food service workers and leadership team that are also on site, should the need for extra hands arise. Having adequate, experienced staff available is not an issue at Westwind. And what can I say about the staff? Exemplary, every last one. My mother was difficult from Day 1: banging on the door to leave, yelling / demanding that the staff pay constant attention to her, rejecting the food offered to her, becoming incontinent yet taking off her adult diaper at night, disrobing herself in front of others, having tantrums when she didn't get her way, etc. etc. My mom had all the bad behaviors of someone with dementia. I, as her son, was lost to understand how she was behaving, and frustrated by it. And let me be very clear about what I am about to say: NOT ONE TIME did I hear a frustrated negative comment from the staff about my mother. Ever. Not one. What I saw instead was Prima and Joan, undaunted, coming into my mother's room time and again, asking if she wanted to join that hour's activity. I saw Fritzi and Stephanie and Anais so carefully trying various strategies to get my mother to take her medicine, and not spit it out of her mouth. I saw Maria and Marie and Andrea cleaning my mother and dressing her and fixing her hair every morning to make sure she looked good. I saw Connie hug my mother and hold her tight, as long as needed, to calm my mother down when she was trying to repeatedly punch Connie. I am thankful for all the times Josh and Kadafi and Matteo encouraged me, telling me how much they liked my mother. And it is just countless the number of people that sat with my mother, and lovingly held her hand, and tried to ease her anxiety and agitation. This place did more than we asked, and more than was required. It was worth every penny we spent for my mother to stay here. As a final word, let me just say: thank God for Westwind Memory Care, and God bless the people that work there.

My hope is actual care improvement. Because Westwind services do not include basic medical care. I have included Sutter Health Home Care and a third party physical therapist to his care regiment. I have also added alternating air pressure equipment to his recliner, bed, and wheelchair to improve healing to skin degradation wounds (bed sores). Recently, Westwind has opted away from denture care for my father resulting in pureed meals. Not optimal on either point. Nutrition and hydration are a consistent conversation, to improve upon this concern I am providing nectar consistency fruit juice, protein shakes, and Ensure meal supplement. These meal supplements are supplied by me. The conversation is ongoing. I see some movement towards an improved experience for my father, but remain concerned.

I'm particularly grateful for, and impressed by, Oliver's sincere compassion and care for the memory residents in the unit he directs. That's really what sold me on the place immediately, the first day I went, and he toured me through the memory care ward. I was scared to go because I had never been in a locked memory care unit before, and I imagined it would be some awful, dark, creepy, depressing, prison-like place full of anguish and suffering. It was anything but. Light, airy, clean, welcoming, with friendly staff being very attentive to everything that was happening. Every time I visited after my husband moved there, I had this same positive impression of the place. That very first day, I saw how Oliver interacted with some residents--one who was very frightened, and another who seemed very angry--and he just took the time to comfort them, listen to them, joke with them, and acknowledge them. He gave them so much dignity. It was very moving. Thank you Oliver, for doing this important work. Thank you Aegis for providing such a quiet and peaceful place for my husband to rest during his final days.

As an outsider, I've witnessed how attentive and discreet the staff are when caring for the residents, and it's restored my faith in people. As a facility, it tries its best to give the residents a normal life filled with activities and events. The activity coordinator, Ms Julie Bello, does a beautiful job of coordinating events for the facility, making sure that everyone is entertained and occupied. From interacting with the staff, I also understand that many of them had parents who suffered from Alzheimer's, so this work has special meaning to them. My mother has advanced stage Alzheimer's, and I understand how important it is to be patient and understanding with Alzheimer's patients. In my opinion, Carefield is a home with a heart because of its people. They're all kind, amazing folks trying to do what's right for the residents. I hope this place remains the same when I need a place to go myself! Today, May 9th, they celebrated Mother's Day a day early with an MD brunch--a formal event with champagne flutes, live music, and a buffet style lunch for residents and their families. The Carefield staff was incredibly kind and attentive to him and did a great job communicating with me and the hospice team. He required round the clock care including incontinence, needing to be moved in and out of a wheelchair, and assistance eating. It was a lot. They have daily activities for residents as well as parties on major holidays such as Father's Day where they decorate the facility. One thing that is unique about Carefield Pleasanton is they only have memory care, no assisted living. At most facilities the assisted living area is nicer and roomier, and memory care is tucked in a back corner. Since Carefield Pleasanton is only memory care there is much more room for memory care patients to walk around, including an outdoor courtyard. I'm in the position of having both of my parents requiring memory care. I can honestly say if I end up in the same position I would want to have an experience like he had at Carefield.

He really enjoys their outings and approach to memory care - it's like a resort for folks with cognitive issues. Kensington staff have made it possible for me to live my life while they handle the day-to-day care my LO needs. Dementia is not easy, on patient or family, Kensington staff, support and care have been amazing. We had falls - all were handled with careful attention to his wellness, disclosed openly and honestly with me. A couple falls meant EMT's or a hospital was necessary but no falls resulted in any significant injuries. I suspect falls for elderly, fragile, dementia patients with poor mobility are to be expected. Kensington always called to let me know what happened and made recommendations to prevent it in the future. They gave me ample opportunity to state any concerns too. I've found Kensington food is always great - fresh, tasty and as much variety as he wants. WOW, the deserts are his favorite. ;-) He loves the 'mock-tail' parties with music, dancing and singing. I have found the incentive for all community members (staff, residents and family) to participate in activities very high. I know if my LO doesn't join an event - it's his choice to have some down-time and not be 'made-to' participate. It's his life and this disease takes its toll in many areas - he isn't the person he used to be but he loves his Kensington lifestyle. Recently he told me, "while he can't remember much", he's "pretty sure that Kensington is the nicest place he's ever lived". With all the bad days dementia gives us that one little remark was my win for the year - I hold it very dear and I know that Kensington made it possible. I can't speak all aspects of the one-star review BUT perhaps their loved one needed that one-to-one additional care they are now purchasing with the cost savings at the new facility - each resident is an individual. I read their happy review of their new home and I am thrilled they found a good fit for their LO. I think the Kensington staff seem well compensated and well qualified since we experienced no real turn-over and they are always happy to work with us. However, I too "butted-heads" with some nursing staff. I would fault Kensington with failing to identify those staff members who should not interact directly with family or LO's. Working with 'raw', stressed out families (forced to watch a painful decline) is not in every staff-members toolbox no matter how eminently qualified they are for their day-to-day responsibilities. Kensington is not inexpensive but I would say they offer value. Yes, more costly than other national memory care facilities but I would say marginally more than equivalent facilities. Kensington is new, modern, their care-giver to resident ratio is very low, it's a very active lifestyle for those with cognitive issues. My LO complained often about his last facility (more about 'being in' memory care than their actual efforts). He does not complain about Kernsington or the staff which are always happy, friendly, and genuinely welcoming.

One star given for cleanliness of areas and room, and some very kind staff. This is surface level, however, as LO did not receive care consistently and staff did not have training to do most of the basics. The staff will be attentive on the surface, on day one, then vanish. Management will be all supportive if you keep your mouth shut and any updates will be sporadic, not truthful, inconsistent and sadly, non supportive. Senior leadership lacks oversight and you will be gas lighted on multiple levels. The price is sky high and you do not get what you pay for. Food is good if you order off menu vs vats of food specials. Sadly, they simply do not care much for residents as evident on multiple visits and their motto of caring for your family member like family is not factual. Avoid this place.
