ALWAYS Goes above and beyond; great diagnosticians, won't fix what ain't broke; always call and explain repairs needed and how $much it'll cost; friendly, courteous, clean, polite. Case in point: a new mechanic joined the ranks and worked on my car; they made sure to introduce him to me and had him give me the details on the work performed - AND he fixed a broken windshield washer/sprayer that I hadn't even complained about, just as that little EXTRA customer service. A fascinating study. You draw your own opinions. Mine was extremely negative. First visit, car had strong vibrations. Lady on the phone kindly offered great advice that it was probably ice in the wheels. Pressed for time, and after a visit to a non-functioning frozen car wash, I took the car in. After a few hours in the warm garage, ice melted, problem indeed resolved. Slightly surprised at the $25 fee... having established I live around the block and drive high-mileage cars (ie 'an ideal customer') - 9 out of ten times in my life, usually I'd get a wave off, a smile, and 'come back to us again!' Easy way to impress me, build trust, establish a profitable relationship that could carry for the next decade or longer. Although my 'repair' involved simply using his warm room, I cannot deny he looked at the front end, so I paid the $25, no question. I personally would have waived it, but oh well. Saw from another review that he charged $20 to jumpstart a guy whose car died across the road... hmm. Maybe a pattern is forming. But you know what? I had a problem, now I don't, so pay the man - he's not a charity. Moving on. A few weeks later, took my truck this time, which needed to pass its emission test (check engine light). Received the call to pickup my vehicle - but nothing had been done. Explanation (which still confuses me as I type this), 'we have retrieved 3 codes with our diagnostic equipment, here they are, but you need to go to the dealer because they have better equipment to truly diagnose. $65 please'. So... what? Okay, so, you're admitting your equipment isn't up to the job to diagnose my particular vehicle. Okay, no problem. But you still want $65... for... what I am paying for? Reply: 'A diagnostic check'. Great, what's my diagnosis? (3 codes are pointed to, on invoice). So, to summarize, I'm leaving with the same problem I showed up with, with the fresh knowledge that you don't have the equipment to do the job, with 3 codes that are worthless to me because any other garage is going to do their own diagnostic before commencing repairs. And you want $65. You couldn't have pointed out right when I arrived, that you don't have the equipment to work on my particular car? This didn't work for me at all. In a calm, measured and quite civil conversation, I expressed my frustration. Mike offered that he'd spent a half hour on the car, what if we split the difference. We agreed and shook hands. Usually I only pay for a bunch of numbers at Keno, but whatever. I took his advice and drove to the dealership. Walked in, the service guy examined my invoice and immediately laughed at me. "Merrimack charged you $30 to tell you to come here?" I sighed and explained that Merrimack actually tried to charge me double that amount. Out of curiosity, ran the scenario by Pep Boys. If you did a diagnostic check and provided me with just codes, would you charge? Answer: Of course not. That's only a partial diagnosis. Moving on & the issue behind me, I went back to Merrimack Auto Center again, for a repair to my original car. Mike kept me waiting 10 minutes, I was watching him moving around the garage, tidying up. Really all I had to do was hand over the keys and say, 'please make noise stop', as I've done for 25 years of handing keys to mechanics. Finally he emerged, and in a ten second conversation told me flat out, he didn't want my business anymore. Because I "don't want to pay him $95 an hour to check things out". So now I'm a cheapskate? I don't pay my bills? Buddy - provide a requested good or service, I'll pay for it, in full, on time, every time. I'm envious Mike isn't hungry and can pick and choose his customers. I wish we all had that luxury. If you decide to use the services of Merrimack Auto Center, know up front it is a little Soup-Nazi-ish (re Seinfeld). Stand quietly at the counter, pay your bill, leave. Do not question your bill, no matter how civil you are. Apparently if you question anything, you will be banned for life. No repairs for you! I don't need someone who nickel-and-dimes their customer to death. Don't come back? No problem. There's a lot of mechanics in town, apparently with better equipment, desire to actually do the repairs they diagnose, desire to make money and build lasting relationships. I'd like anyone reading this to know that I've always received top service at Pep Boys on Amherst, and Skip at Durabilt Transmission also does top-knotch work. Both places have worked on my cars, with fast, friendly service, no games. They did the work in a pattern I've been accustomed to for decades - car in, problem explained, diagnosis received, car repaired, pay invoice. Repeat. I would encourage you to carefully consider other options before choosing Merrimack Auto Center LLC. read more

This review should have been written a year ago. Perhaps I should start by stating that I'm a 70 year old cancer patient, on a fixed income, and my wife is in a nursing home. Kids are grown and gone. So I have quite a juggling act. With all that is on my plate, My 2006 Dodge Durango is desperately needed at all times. I have always been a back yard mechanic, but over the last several years, I've had to have much of my work done at garages. Over the last 4 years, I used a garage that was recommended to me in Milford. I found that bills were rather large, and repairs never seemed to quite "reach the mark". In addition in this time they "found it necessary" to replace my rear disk brake pads AND rotors twice! Last year, I decided that I have just enough energy to do it myself. WRONG! Having already purchased premium Heavy-duty parts, I'm in a bind. Inspection was coming up in 2 weeks! After asking around, and not getting any encouragement, I remembered that Dick Raymond had sold his business to Chip at Merrimack Auto. I made an embarrassed call and spoke with The folks on Amherst St. They were well within their rights, to tell me that if I don't bring eggs to a restraunt, why should they use parts provided by me? On the contrary, they were very understanding and set me up with an appointment for the next day. Now we're looking at full rear disk brakes, plus my MIL (check engine light), was on. And THAT would have to be trouble-shot, and repaired to pass emissions. When I arrived, the manager, Mike, was there to greet me. We discussed what had to be done. I found him to be very attentive, and he was knowledgeable, and MOST courteous. I was offered a ride home but I am a 4 minute walk from There. Needless to say, with what I needed to have done, this was an all day job, and I was a little apprehensive as to what this would cost. Near the end of the afternoon, Mike called me and advised that the emissions problem was going to take additional time. ( The engine compartment of a Dodge Durango is quite cluttered, with a rather large V-8 engine). I agreed to them keeping it overnight. Around Noon, the next day, Mike again called me, and told me what he had found and that my car was ready. When I arrived, the car was in-fact ready, and waiting outside. Now for the bill....... For The labor, on the rear brakes, evaluate and repair emissions, requiring a "dealer-item" Air tube, Oil, and Filter, and State inspection, The low cost floored me. I can safely say that elsewhere, I would have been soaked well in excess of $400.00. All the work, and diagnostic time, and materials came in at around Half that amount. The car has been performing flawlessly since then. Last Month, needless to say, I brought it back to Mike for inspection, oil and filter, this was well under $100.00. I also met Chip, the owner, of the company, on this trip. These are good honest people who have gone the extra mile for me, and I would stake my personal reputation on them, their prices, and service. PS I noticed a very scathing review from someone else, here. I don't know the circumstances, but I have to ask if that person posted to the wrong place, because what he claimed, and what I EXPERIENCED couldn't be farther apart. read more

Customer service is amazing! Only having one car, their service when they will drop you off, and then pick you up when the car is done, is the what puts them at the top of my list! They called to let me know the issues and gave me the control to decide what I wanted serviced. When I declined on a particular service, there was absolutely NO pressure to get it done. The rates for service are more than fair. After two service visits, I have found my new auto center! Just wish they had "fridge magnets" so I didn't have to keep looking up their number! read more
