I ordered the Skirt steak and bacon wrapped shrimp with the sautéed veggies. I loved every bite of my meal though I was nice and shared some with my husband. He ordered the two fish tacos platter. We went here for lunch after staying at the Gaylord Texan Resort and opting not to have lunch at their Mexican restaurant. Mesa's is just a few minutes drive from Gaylord so it is super convenient. The ambience is pleasant and open and in general it was fine. The restaurant was clean with plenty of seats and parking outside. I did not get a "homey" feel but that may be just me. Our server was attentive and efficient. No problems or complaints. The free chips and salsa were good but not outstanding. The salsa was warm and obviously homemade, but it lacked kick. It was tasty but not "OMG this is good." I started with a cup of Roberto's queso which is the standard queso cheese with some ground beef, pico, and a tablespoon of guacamole. It too was good but not outstanding. I am not sure what it was missing but there was something that was needed. I had the two beef tacos and they were just average. Not much flavor or anything distinctive. The ground beef was not well seasoned so they were kind of bland. The rice and black beans were also kind of bland. Frankly, my tacos at home are better. The wife had the taco salad and liked it, although it did not come with any dressing. She used the salsa. Not sure if that was an oversight or that is the way the salad is served. Showing up on a Saturday evening to a nearly empty restaurant is kind of a double edged sword. On one hand, it's nice to have the dining room and server pretty much all to yourselves, but at the same time the lack of patrons certainly arouses suspicion. Such was the case recently when we paid a visit to Mesa. The first order of business was getting an appetizer to go with the chips and salsa. Upon the server's recommendation we got the queso Blanco. It was quite possibly the blandest queso I have ever eaten. At this point I started to worry that it was a sign of things to come. However, the extra spicy salsa that we also requested to go with the chips was more flavorful and gave me hope for the entrees. The good news is that my chicken and cheese enchiladas turned out to be better than the insipid appetizer. The not so good news is that it was still a mediocre meal. The rest of my family had mixed feelings about their food. My husband, who got 2 beef enchiladas, said his were overly salty but otherwise average. The bacon wrapped shrimp that my mother got were a little overcooked but she liked the sides. Both of my sons' entrees, the Mesa burrito and the chicken strips, were very well received. People like to say that even when pizza is bad it's still good. For me, that also applies to Tex-Mex. I ordered Mesa as a pickup recently and was very happy with the quality and quantity of food! The service was relatively quick, and the staff was knowledgeable about the offerings over the phone. The restaurant itself is VERY bright, I'd prefer it to be a bit dim as the dinner service time though. Overall, I would recommend Mesa for dinner with friends, family or a casual date. read more

First off our server Alex was AMAZING. Ask for him when you come in. He made our kids feel welcome and got them to laugh. Appetizer: Roberto's Queso, it is a queso with beef, quail and pico in it. Very good and a large portion. They also bring out chips and salsa. The salsa came out warm and wasn't too spicy. Dinner: I got the Mesa Guisado and would get it again. The sauce was Smokey and tasty. My husband got the Smothered Chicken and said it's some of the best chicken he's had. He hates mushrooms and said they made them really good. I cannot say enough great things about Curt, Manny, Danny and Ed - as well as the rest of the Mesa team! We recently hosted my husband's 50th birthday party on the (climate controlled) patio - and it was a great success! The fajitas (chicken steak and veggie) and sides were plentiful and tasted great! We stopped here to meet an friend and it was a halfway point. First off- ALL WAITSTAFF WAS INCREDIBLE! Every single person that spoke to us or helped us was so friendly. Our waitress was very kind and efficient, answering every question we had. Note to others who don't enjoy- they serve a heated salsa with the chips, I'm not a warm salsa fan but really enjoyed the queso with meat, guac and pico in it. I ordered the redfish tacos and the grilled them for me instead of breading and frying which I appreciated, sides were just eh. The margaritas were decent, maybe a little overly sweet. The staff and customer service here keeps us coming back again and again. Tremendous hospitality combined with good food make this local establishment a must-visit. We usually sit at the bar, which on certain nights can be quite entertaining for people watching. Rossi, Natalie, and Blake provide top-tier service and go above and beyond for their customers - anything from feeding the occasional homeless passerby (they are more frequent in Grapevine now as everywhere else) to ensuring that customers in needs of Uber/Lyft get home safely. The Happy Hour specials are excellent. Great drink prices - and ask for the tacos on special. A good selection of street tacos is on hand to pair with your HH drink choices. The food here is pretty good - the nachos are on point and made differently than at your typical Mexican restaurant. The salsa, chips, and guacamole are meals in themselves. Look, it's a Tex mex place with good ritas, good appetizers, and good vibes. Friendly waitstaff and good atmosphere. However, the food taste is just alright. It's not bad, but it's also not very good. I've tried the brisket quesadillas, the guacamole, the chips and salsa, and the tacos al carbon and none have been something to come back to. The brisket quesadillas I had yesterday were soggy because there was so much grease. The tacos al carbon are just ok. The salsa is sweet and needs more heat. The chips were also soggy. Refried beans seemed like they weren't fresh and needed salt and just a lot more love to them maybe cilantro or something. I come from a Mexican family where food we cook is authentic and we cook it with passion and love and I think this place lacks the love on the food and it shows. I believe some of their food isn't fresh like they advertise and it's sad. There are other Tex mex restaurants that truly do care for their food. read more

My in laws brought us here for an early casual dinner. To our surprise it was happy hour (yay!) they offered $4.50 margaritas that weren't the greatest at all tons of tangy sugary mix but also $4.50 well drinks hello easy decent gin and tonics! The complimentary chips and salsa were great! The chips were thin and not greasy! The salsa had some flavor and not spicy by any means. I ordered the chicken fajita salad and cleaned my plate the chicken was cooked perfectly the lettuce crisp and fresh and their guacamole atop was also very fresh and flavorful! The hunt for mexican food in Grapevine continues. I like to check out places that are locally owned and stumbled upon Mesa. The location is good, the building is lovely, and the food wasn't bad. It just wasn't good. I started with their spicy margarita which was not spicy. At all. I would say it was sweet. It just tasted like regular margarita mix with a pepper in it and tajin on the rim. The salsa came out hot. And not spicy hot, temperature hot. Like a soup. Admittedly, I do not prefer my salsas warm, but I also thought it was pretty bland and had no spice to it. Next came out the brisket tacos. The meat was cooked well, a bit under seasoned, but it was topped off with grocery store bagged cheese which has no relation to queso fresco (which is stated on the menu), pickled jalapenos (which was not stated on the menu), and I declined the bbq sauce. I should have known when there was supposed to be bbq sauce. Thought I would be good with salsa. I was wrong. It came with rice and black beans that had never met salt at ALL. The whole thing was kind of confusing and bland. The waiter disappeared after he dropped the food off and having salt and pepper on tables is no longer a thing. Seated right away on an early Saturday afternoon. Defoe is nice, laid back feel without looking overcrowded. Our waiter was Alex and he was attentive. We started with a cup of queso, it was good and reasonably priced at $5. The salsa is served warm which was a nice change. The chips were good and complimented the salsa. Chicken quesadilla is half of a large tortilla stuffed with chicken and cheese. No onions or other vegetables. Served with sour cream on the side. The chicken releno was good, the sauce on it was somewhat bland, presentation was beautiful. Both entrees were served with black beans and rice which both had decent flavor. Great atmosphere, friendly and fast service from Shelby. I had the queso with chorizo and was impressed with the flavor and grilled texture. Got the shrimp enchiladas with lobster cream sauce. The avocado slices were a nice touch. The shrimp was tender, the sauce was creamy and delicious (a touch of Sherry?), the rice was light and fluffy and the side of vegetables were perfectly seasoned. I would like to give this meal 4.5 stars because the only flaw is the extremely watery salsa that lacked flavor. Only our second visit here. We asked Alex, our server, what he recommended. Wow! He was as passionate about food as I am. Alex highly recommended the seafood on their menu. I decided on the Mesa Seafood Relleno based on what I had read off the menu description and Alex's guidance. Mesa Seafood Relleno Roasted poblano pepper stuffed with shrimp, crab, grilled corn and cotija cheese topped with lobster cream sauce $22 Absolutely the most incredible chile relleno I have ever had anywhere. Beyond amazing. Loads of crab and shrimp, with a little corn for contrast in taste and texture. The lobster sauce was excellent and added beautiful color to the presentation. This dish is moderately spicy but off the chart for overall value and taste. I had red rice because I am not a fan of cilantro. The rice had great mild flavor and texture. My wife finished off the rice and black beans with her cup of tortilla soup. This Tex-Mex restaurant is going onto our regular rotation. read more

The oddest part of these is the sweet Thai chili sauce drizzled on top... doesn't seem fitting for Tex-mex food? None of the food was spicy or had any heat, which is at least somewhat expected for Mexican fare, even hybrid Mexican fare! Date had Chile relleno, seemed to like it; said it was OK. Decent portion. Spicy Jalapeño margarita: not spicy, no jalapeño in it, tasted like cheap tequila. Served in a small tumbler over ice. Date had it because he usually loves them, wasn't impressed. Beerita (frozen margarita w/upturned beer in it): margarita mix is very odd tasting, very sweet. Almost like sprite? Beer is a coronita; usual. Didn't finish the beverage. I went to lunch here one Friday with some family that was visiting from out of town. We started off by sharing a bowl of Roberto's Queso $10.00. This is their normal queso but with taco meat, guacamole and Pico de Gallo added in. This was very good, nice a velvety smooth and flavorful. The portion was shared between 3 adults and a child and we still took over half of it home. For my entrée I got the Mesa Platter $20.00 which was 1 beef enchilada, 1 chicken enchilada, 1 cheese enchilada and a beef taco. The beef taco was good but all 3 of the enchilada's were meh. The rice and beans were meh as well. There was just no flavor in all of it. The taco was much better flavor wise but at least it had the textural crunch from the shell and I could taste some seasoning on the beef. The service we had from Nancy was awesome though, never an empty drink all around. I would go back for the queso and maybe try something else to see if they do anything else better. Really disappointed after some of the reviews on here were good. They were very accommodating ok a Saturday night when we left the Gaylord Ice exhibit and couldn't find a table anywhere for 9. That's about the extent of the good though. At 9pm they were barely half full. The waitstaff must have been tired because most of our drinks were closer to empty than full most of the night. I ordered the beef burrito plate that comes with beans and rice. They brought our food out within 10 minutes of ordering which is usually not a sign that it's fresh. And it wasn't. The burrito consisted mostly of rice inside and I literally had to look for the beef. Nothing else in the plate was spectacular at all. The forgers has chimichanga, enchilada plate and street tacos. Pretty much the same response from everyone. El Fenix would have been better and less expensive. If you're going to charge more for your Mexican food it better be better than El Fenix prices. read more

Had I not read the description of the restaurant perhaps, four stars would have been given, as expectations would have been different. The description reads "scratch made Mexican food with a touch of Tex Mex" the tortillas were not scratch made, and the rice and beans, if scratch made, lacked flavor. The description also reads that they offer upscale qualities. Well, plastic cups, and cheap plates and utensils aren't upscale. The seats could use a good cleaning. Again, it was expectations based on the description. Despite these factors, the service is great, very fast. They don't skimp on the food. We ordered the Mesa guisada and a chicken quesadilla. The salsa for the chips is warm and delicious. Most people were ordering the fajitas and maybe that's what we should have ordered. Was disappointed that for a Mexican restaurant they didn't offer traditional scratch made beverages. Like lemonade. It was all sodas (not even Mexican soda) and artificial lemonade. My wife is a connoisseur of Mexican food. We really enjoyed the warm salsa. Sandra rated the tortilla soup at a 9. That puts them in top 10 of the 100's of Mexican food restaurants we've had the pleasure to visit in the world. We split a chicken chimi and were pleasantly surprised with the crunchyness along with the black refried beans adding another layer of deliciousness. Dan was such a wonderful host. My husband and I dropped in for a casual dinner date last night. The weather was perfect so the patio felt really good and it wasn't too busy which was nice. We ordered a chicken and steak fajitas plate and briskett tacos. The meal was good, no complaints - would definitely eat here again. In fact I am looking forward to trying their brunch. This is definitely a 3.5 place based upon my one experience. The server was nice, prices were reasonable. Here's where I would rank them in regard to their genre in the local area. Mi Dia is my fave but definitely the priciest. Glorias is 2nd. I think they have the edge as far as fajita flavor and I like their salsa and rice better. Also their corn tacos are much crispier, which I prefer. This place is a solid 3rd though and the most affordable. Everyone else in the area is not worth the mention imo. read more
