For the longest time, I have been hearing about how great this tamale place is. This day was finally the day to get a dozen and try their tamale bowl while in there. WOW! Definitely get the chili bowl with tamale in it. It was so flavorful and filling. I took my left over chili and used to dip the dozen false I took home. Only issue is if you don't tell The kid at the register your ordering a dozen tamales 1st he will just press the 6 tamale button of one type and then 6 of the other type charging $20 instead of $18 for a dozen. After checkout I asked if you can mix and match to get the dozen discount. He said I didn't tell him I was getting a dozen and need to tell him 1st next time. So was billed $20 for the dozen. So one of my friends was hosting a "Color themed party" and my color was brown so I knew immediately that I wanted some REALLY GOOD Tamales so in my search I found this place. They did not disappoint. The masa to filling ratio is good. They have several flavors and I got a little bit of all of them except the vegetarian. They were a big hit. Served them with my homemade chili con carne and everyone was stuffed! I also ordered one ground beef street taco and it was sooooo good. I will definitely return. They also have chips and salsas for sale to take home and I bought the tomatillo and it lasted 1 1/2 days in my house! I ordered a few different types of tamales along with the chili - OMG, the food was so tasty. I want planning on eating a lot, but things didn't go according to plan. Carried beef tamales- which is apparently a rare variant for tamale places. They were very flavorful and a very good value for a dozen. Their rice was a good value too and did not include any unnecessary filler veggies. We were in and out in less than 5 minutes and the man behind the counter had great customer service. This place is slaying in the reviews, and I see no reason to dissent. The core of what they do is great in so many ways: tamales are pure Americana, a cuisine that goes back for thousands of years in the region. They are well suited to the modern world, and people with special dietary needs will find vegan tamales and no gluten. And it's fast, convenient food; mine were heated up in minutes. Ordering a platter with four tamales, I got two of the vegan ones with black beans and two bean and cheese. I could hardly tell the difference between the two, but they were certainly delicious, especially with salsa. More beans and rice on the side made for a filling meal, and at around $10, it's as good of a deal as you're likely to get. The one caveat is that they are not open particularly late, and from what I heard, online ordering closes an hour before close of business. So plan ahead, and head on over. read more

The Tommy Tamale Market & Cafe is quietly placed on the corner of a strip center. There's was ample parking available when we stopped in for lunch so we were able to easily find a good spot. The restaurant was quiet but if it had been busy, I imagine it could get loud in the space. The food was good and I loved that they served them in resealable bowls. Don't expect a vast menu; they are concise and to the point...after all it's called Tommy TAMALE. We tried the Tommy Bowl with black bean tamale and a Tamale Pie with spicy chicken (possibly pork). We both had leftovers so we combined them together to make a bowl to take home. I'm happy to report, the leftovers reheated well. Although I'm not planning on taking the extended drive to go back, if I was in the area I would go back for another bowl or two. read more

The tommy bowl is literally the best thing since sliced bread. I love the flavor of the chilli and the beef tamales are DELICIOUS. Oh yeah! Not only is Tommy the nicest guy you'll ever meet, but he slings sum great grub outta the back. This was my 3rd "Hole in the Wall" establishment this week. You could say it's barely a hole in the wall. Really not that old but they're geared for take out of their frozen tamales which appear to be at least 50 percent of their business. They have a few tables to dine in on their fabulous tamale creations if you want to. The ac was acting up today and not much cooler than outside so, I opted to take with me. This visit, I took my time to carefully peruse the menu and get exactly what i wanted. This ended up being a burrito. Specifically, a burrito stuffed with a beef tamale, beans and rice, seasoned beef,cheese, Fritos and then grilled. Wow, what a concoction and delicious. It was so hot I couldnt eat it while driving so took it home. 30 minutes later when I got it in the house it was the perfect temperature. It came with sour cream, pico de gallo, salsa verde, and a hot chipotle sauce. All terrific. We also got a tamale bowl which is basically a chili pie with a tamale of your choice on top and Fritos on bottom. Again, superb! If you are anywhere close to Tommys dont miss a chance to stop in. As much as I brag about this place I'm super bummed to give it anything less than 5 stars. Reason being isn't because of the quality of food! My food was still very very delicious but I couldn't take my mind off of the new bowls. I had to call and get clarification. Assumingely, they are discontinuing the original bowls and replacing them with some way smaller ones. same circumference around the top and bottom but the new bowl is a just about HALF the size of the original bowl. I thought maybe I was going crazy but I got confirmation they were changing. My LARGE bowl for $10.25 was honestly a SMALL and I should have paid less. There was barely any rice and the ratio to rice and chili just wasn't the same. Super disappointing to see. I will always love the food but I'm not sure anymore for price and quantity. Why 5 stars? Because I don't seek out tamales, but these still definitely hit the spot. --- --- --- Before staying at Great Wolf Lodge, we did our nearby food research, and Tommy Tamale was definitely at the top of my list. Again, not because I love tamale's, but any place with about 1500 reviews and a 5-star average is worth me visiting. And it turns out, those 1500 people weren't wrong. These tamales were really enjoyable, as was everything else: the chips & queso, the rice & beans, and even the quesadilla. The person I assumed to be the owner, (Tommy, himself?) was just kind of hanging around the dining area, welcoming people and helping to clean up after patrons left. We didn't take advantage of buying anything from the market area, but there was plenty of interesting stuff, including spicy peanut brittles, which I found to be weird, but clearly someone likes it! The restaurant also includes a small mart where you can buy hot sauce and salsa, which is convenient. Overall, the food was very good; we tried various tamale dishes including: Tommy Mac bowl, tamale pie, tamale bowl, & chicken quesadilla. The tamale pie came with a layer of Fritos at the bottom and gave a nice crunch. The tamales came out hot and fresh, very satisfying. The portion was very generous. However, because the portion is so big and the dishes come with a lot of cheese, it can become overwhelming. I'd recommend sharing a large or just get the small size. My wife, my daughter, and myself walked into an empty restaurant. I thought to myself 'this does not bode well'. We were directed to a counter to place our order and we ordered the Tamale Pie with mild pork, the Tommy Bowl with habanero pork and a Chicken Quesadillas. We also got chips with salsa and queso on the side. I have rarely seen my wife react to food in a dramatic way, but after one bite of the Tamale Pie, her eyes got wide, she leaned back in her chair and both arms were raised like Tommy himself had scored a touchdown and she was the ref. Speaking of Tommy, he came out and personally greeted us, which was really nice, he seems like a great guy. The quesadilla and Tommy Bowl were both amazing, and frankly my daughter and I couldn't finish because we just got so full. The queso was some of the best I've ever tased as well. I don't have a great point of reference for this, as I've only had Queso from Chipotle, but Tommy's Queso was hands down significantly superior. I was a little skeptical about this place. The restaurant looks like a franchise kind of place from the outside, but inside you can find cans of pickled veggies, salsas and relishes. Visit: August 2021 We heard about this spot from Mikey Chen (Strictly Dumpling) and wanted to give it a try. Ordering process was a bit confusing for us, but we eventually figured it out LOL. You'll see two registers when you come in - one side for the "market" where you can buy the dry/perishable/frozen items, and further in (aka like 3 steps) is the "restaurant" cashier for you to get the hot foods. We ended up getting: 1) Tommy Bowl ($9) 2) Tamale pie ($9) 3) Ultimate Tommy Dip ($8) Honestly, we were too greedy and got too much LOL. Everything tasted about the same, so I think you have to decide what is most important to you (the queso? Tamale?) and figure out what to order. Overall though, I am rounding from a 3 to a 4 because of how cheap it is. I wonder what the price is now, especially with inflation. But this is some nice comfort food, and I would probably just share 1 bowl with 2-3 other people next time. Or try more of the tamales. read more
