This is the visitor center you pass right as you enter MVNP. The staff are SUPER helpful and the facilities are clean and plentiful. There is lots of parking here too. Inside there are learning exhibits, a gift shop, and plenty of other resources (like maps etc). I came inside and asked a volunteer about recs for the day, and he gave me my whole itinerary - the staff are super gracious. Would def rec a stop here to use the bathrooms, fill up your water, learn, and get your questions answered before starting your day in the park! read more

This is a huge, beautiful, and modern visitor center. On one end you can glimpse their archival section that preserves the artifacts found here and the research work going on. The other end has a bookshop and a small museum that gives context to the history of the area. Since the national park is so large, I had to ask a ranger for clarification to see what areas of the park were open. Wetherill Mesa is currently closed due to construction. There's also free wifi (you can use it to download the NPS app and get more information during your visit) and clean bathrooms. read more

Nice visitor center right at the entrance to Mesa Verde National Parks. Was pleasantly surprised by how large their visitor center was. Plenty of exhibits and information on the park and the Ancestral Pueblo culture. Perfect starting point to lay some foundation before entering the park. Everyone we interacted with here was so nice and friendly, more than willing to share what they know about the park and the culture. Nice little bookstore. Not the largest I've seen but has a nice selection. Plenty of clean bathrooms. Should definitely be your first stop when visiting the national park. read more

Easily one of the better visitor centers out there. There's a lot of history preserved in Mesa Verde, and the visiting center does a great job show casing it as well. There's a lot of merchandise for customers and there's a mini museum in there too. Customer experience was solid and there employees there are generally polite. I'd highly recommend visiting even if you can't visit the entirety of the park. Our last major stop of a 9000 mile summer road trip was at Mesa Verde National Park. It was a place I had wanted to visit my entire life. Being there with my bride and three children was certainly a bucket list item, and we thoroughly enjoyed our time in the park... ... despite a few setbacks, and some needed due diligence. Mesa Verde is one of the few national parks whose main attractions require advanced reservations and additional costs. We had planned a month-long itinerary from Los Angeles to Key West, and back home through Atlanta, Memphis, Kansas City, Omaha, Dodge City, Durango... and not once did it occur to us that as Annual Pass holders for National Parks and Federal lands, we would need expensive tickets reserved months in advance for that privilege. It just never occurred to us. To keep this review only about the Visitor Center, it's a modern building with plenty of parking, clean restrooms, some life-size dioramas of cliff dwelling Pueblans from yesteryore, a small gift shop, and a lot of frustrated visitors who also didn't get the memo that much of the up-close and personal parts of the park are off limits if you didn't pay for them 6 weeks ago ahead of your visit. A couple of uniformed desk rangers were also there at the visitor center, answering the same questions over and over: "No, you need reservations." "No, we have no maps due to supply & distribution issues with Denver." "No, that part of the park is closed due to road construction." Even a modicum of resourcefulness allows you to get most of the maps on your phone (screenshot them since you'll probably lose service when you need it), there were lots of things for us to see even without tickets, beautiful hikes, sweeping mesas, summer thunderstorms, and great family memories. But if I'm being honest? No thanks to the Visitor Center or her staff, who in a lot of ways are also victims of poor federal management, but might improve a lot of outcomes by practicing a little empathy, and by subscribing to the tenet that the customer is NOT always right, but they're always still the customer. read more

Mesa Verde Visitor's Center is the first place you see when you come to the park so it is a convenient place to stop to plan your visit. They have the latest on ticket information so it's best to get your tickets here. They have a display area that winds around the room. It has a small amount of artifacts found in the area to give you a taste of what you will see on the tours or at the Chapin Museum. There is a Research Facility that you can look in through a viewing window. No one was working at the time (weekend) but they left out materials they were working on so you could get an idea of what they do. The Rangers sell the tickets to the tours which is great so they can answer questions you may have before you commit. There are big displays on the wall with photos and information about each tour site and what it takes to get to them. These are cliff dwellings so there are stairs, sandstone steps and ladders to climb. You don't have to be an American Ninja but you should be fit-or in my case, determined. The Visitors Center is only the tip of what you see in the park. In other parks, it's the entire package but, here, there is a museum, hikes and cliff dwellings that hold more of the actual artifacts and tour guides present detailed information. I recommend stopping here for a brief visit. They have what you need to get started. There is also a gift shop to find that perfect souvenir, too. Due to the COVIS-19 pandemic the Mesa Verde Visitor & Research Center had modified hours in July. A word of precaution, Mesa Verde is is expansive and once you get to the top there is no gas so fill-up in town. The visitor center is better than you will find in other national parks. There are exhibits, a gift/souvenir shop, small museum and ticket counter. Pay close attention to the display which outline the ranger lead tours to Cliff House, Balcony House, etc.. Among other information this displays what you need to be able to do to get to them. Balcony House in my opinion is the most difficult physically. There is a 34' ladder to climb as well as some hiking on uneven ground. Ticket sales can be obtained at the visitor center four Ranger lead tours to the various cliff houses. Get your tickets early so that you do not miss out. Some people get their tickets a day ahead of time. The tours fill-up fast. Tours range from 1 hour to 1 1/2 hours a cost a bargain $5. Most important you can get up-dates on all the tours in real time. Due to various weather conditions they get shut down to stop in the visitor center first to find out the tour statuses. There are many people to help with your visit. Rangers can plan a three hour stat or a three day stay. The can point out hidden gems and not to be missed sites. There are self-guided tours to some sites but you will need a Ranger tour to get to the cliff houses. Spruce House is a self-guided tour and not to be missed, as well as, the Mesa Top Loop. Finally, there is a documentary film about the park and the native peoples. Artifacts and sculptures are scatter around the circular visitor center. Park was breath taking. Do the strenuous hike on the petroglyphs trail. It's been my most favorite hike ever! Even though it is strenuous and my heart wanted to explode but there's plenty of places to cop a squat and take in the sights. It's got all these Little Rock stairs and the drawings were only a small part of the total trail. Hikers lie, so let me be honest: amazing, worth doing, 2.4 miles from the start of the trail (so .5 to get there), lots of rock scrambles, after the drawings and you hike straight up and it DOES become easier, gravel and stable the last mile back to the starting point. As for the visitor center it was cool. Get your tickets for the tours there. read more

Mesa Verde Visitor Center is the best visitor center that I've ever been to at a National Park. This should be your first stop before exploring the park. Plenty of parking spots available. Before entering the building, we were already having fun. We took pictures of all the scenery around us. There is an awesome sculpture in front of the visitor center. Restrooms are very clean, and they are not porta potties!! Inside the visitor center, there is a ton of information. Lots of exhibits detailing life for the Pueblo people. There is a information desk staffed with folks to assist you in planning your trip to Mesa Verde National Park. If you want to explore the Cliff dwellings close up, then you need to buy your tour tickets at the Visitor Center. Don't forget to purchase some souvenirs at their store! A must stop before you head to Mesa Verde National Park. This place runs seamlessly which is an impressive feat for a NP. I appreciate the tour availability boards that are huge and updated in real-time so you can plan while you wait in line. There are some self-guided tours but I would highly recommend checking out at least one of the guided tours. You can't see the detail of the cliff dwellings without getting down there yourself. The tours are only$4 per person and last about an hour each. There are some stairs and/or ladders to climb (check the details for each tour before you commit). We did Cliff Palace and Balcony House in the same afternoon without a problem - just ask the friendly staff for guidance of what times to pick for each tour if want to combine a few. I always recommend stopping by the visitor center first before exploring any national park. It's a great place to talk to the park rangers, learn about hidden gems or must see's in the park, see artifacts and watch documentaries about the park and the Puebloans. It's much busier than it's sister park - Canyons of the Ancients National Park nearby. It is impressive area with lots of cliffs to enjoy. There are difficult and easy hikes. We did a guided tour, which we highly recommend you do! You have to buy your tickets at the VC. Make sure you check the availability boards. The guide we had was great. The hike was about 1.5 in with a lot of stairs. So heading back was a bit difficult since we had our mom with us who was older. But for anyone who is very fit and healthy, it'll be breeze. Our tour was about 2 hours. There are some stairs and/or ladders to climb (check the details for each tour before you commit). We did Cliff Palace. It was insightful and fun to enjoy. A gem of our National Park System, Mesa Verde is a must-see. The exhibits of the visitors center effectively communicate the overarching narrative of the history of the area. The park rangers are helpful and friendly, the facility is new, clean, and modern. You can stamp your NPS passport here, if you happen to collect the stamps. They'll update you on the condition of the trails and what's open and what's not. We visited on Thanksgiving weekend, and by this time of year, the trails down to a number of sites were closed due to ice. The roads around Mesa Verde are no joke - if you are afraid of driving on icy roads, or driving on roads with no guardrails with ice, go ahead and postpone your trip until after the thaw. This is a completely new visitor center right as you get off the highway to make your way toward Mesa Verde National Park. It hadn't even been dedicated officially yet when we stopped by in March 2013, but it was already open for business. The ranger was very friendly and humorous as he described what would be ahead. The bathrooms offer a convenient stop before you take off on your 20 mile drive to the next official outpost. You can also try out what the ladders will be like that you have to climb at some dwellings so that can be a helpful exercise before you embark on certain adventures. read more

The Visitor Center is definitely the first stop you should make at Mesa Verde National Park. The information there will help you get the lay of the land and several friendly and helpful park rangers are on hand to assist you, answer all of your questions, and help you map out your day. You can also check out some educational exhibits and browse in the gift shop. If you would like to experience any of the ranger-guided tours available (some of the cliff dwelling sites are only accessible via a guided tour), you must purchase your timed tickets at the visitor center. There is no where else to purchase tickets and it's a long way back if you change your mind during the day. Planning ahead is key. The facility is new, modern and environmentally friendly. What an awesome park and so thankful we stopped at the visitor center first to get the information and maps needed for our adventure. The park ranger's were all so helpful and love their tips. Great exhibits in the visitor center which includes a little bookstore/gift shop. Once we got into the park $15 per car to get in, the drive, the scenery are absolutely breath taking. It's amazing high up you go from 7000 to 8572 ft elevation. Exciting! Once we decide which ruin we were going to visit....one is free Spruce Tree House and the museum had wonderful artifacts on display it was informative. We decided we would purchase one tour $4 per person for Cliff Palace and we were not disappointed. Our Park Ranger Tim was awesome and very knowledgeable, friendly and a great story teller. We took steep steps and a few ladders up but fun! Good workout. We drove around to the Cliff Palace Loop and the Mesa Top Loop and was a great drive, stopped at the point of interest and just had a great time. Went to Mesa Verde for a long weekend camping trip and had a great time. As has always been my experience the park rangers and staff were all very knowledgeable and personable. National park staff are probably the happiest government employees there are. The visitor center was very clean and modern with good informative exhibits and a lot of very good advice for seeing the parks many sights. For those who do not care to rough it there is a very nice lodge with a surprisingly good restaurant serving, among other things, native american-inspired cuisine. My wife and I had a fantastic dinner at the lodge restaurant on the day of our arrival. This is definitely a stop you want to put on your itinerary if you are visiting the four corners area. read more

Take at least one tour of the dwellings. The ranger guided tours are $4/person and well worth the time and money. We took the Balcony House tour. It was really interesting, but one person who is afraid of heights decided not to take the tour because the 32' ladder that you have to climb up on the tour. read more

The only tour open was the balcony house. It was described as strenuous with climbing ladders and through tunnels. The tour was $4 and one of the best tours I've ever been. The guide was fantastic letting us know what to expect and very knowledgeable about the site. She took time to answer questions and made sure that everyone kindly respected the site. This was the most intimate tour of the Puebloan people as I climbed through their house and walled in their own footholes. The park itself was well maintained with well executed directions. We had a limited amount of time so we chose to go to the smaller dwelling area so that we could take one tour and see a few dwellings, but that it would be a less crowded area. Our tour guide Ranger Byron Parker took us on the Long House tour. He was friendly, knowledgeable and interactive! We really loved seeing the dwellings and my fiancé, who is an engineer, was fascinated by many of the water system and sustainability practices that the natives practiced. We were lucky with the weather that day, but make sure you drink lots of water! read more

Definitely stop here first, and if you have anything less than 2 days to explore, talk to one of the rangers working here about the kinds of things you wanna see/get out of the park, and they can help plan your visit a little bit better based on time constraints.
