Wow. This vet is a thief! He and his staff charged me $100 more than what they quoted me. I was blind sighted by the bill the last time I went there, so I made sure I knew what everything was going to cost this time. After the vet quoted me the price, I repeated it back, "$282 including the exam, right?" "Yes," he confirmed. Then again, I repeated the question to the receptionist as I was checking out. She confirmed the same. Later that evening I find out my account was charged $100 more than their quote. I called to tell them and they refused to admit they did anything wrong. Don't be fooled by this guy's seemingly sweet demeanor. He is a shyster! Normally a vet will tell you what options he recommends, and what they cost, then wait to see how you want to proceed. Not this guy. He rapidly says I'm going to do this, this and this, doesn't tell you what any of it means or is going to cost, and doesn't even ask how you want to proceed. Then he rushes off and the next thing you know, you're hit with a shockingly high bill. The way he says what he's going to do makes it sound like he's throwing things in there for free, but believe me, there is a charge. A big one. I brought my little baby in for diarrhea, and the first thing the vet tech told me is, "Okay, we'll run a lab test for him. I said, oh, the $500 test you did on my last dog and never even called me back with the results? No thanks. Is there some sort of parasite treatment I can give him instead?" She said they have a sample one that the vet can offer me. So then she sent the vet in and he rapidly listed off a bunch of treatments that he was going to give him, all of which sounded like Greek to me. So I had to pull out of him what each of these things did. He seemed taken aback that I didn't just nod my head and let him proceed. He barely and briefly explained what each thing did, then I asked what they cost. Taken aback again, he said, "We'll have to put it on the computer." It took awhile for them to come back, and after telling me the cost, he said, "It's not expensive." It's not his place to tell me what is or isn't expensive. He doesn't know what my finances are. They ended up giving my dog 2 different antibiotic injections and medicine to prevent vomiting, which confused me because my main complaint was diarrhea. But I let that go, because I think he had barfed a little bit that morning. They also sent me home with a fecal sample vile, which would have been an additional $92, had I brought it back to them. At least that's what they quoted me. Who knows what they actually would have charged. As I was being rushed out, I aked, "Hey, what about the parasite sample your vet tech told me about?" He then went ahead and let me have that, thankfully. Aside from overcharging me $100, my issue with the vet is he showed zero concern for my finances, or my right to decide for myself which treatments I want to proceed with and what those treatments even are, other than long drug names. If I had just gone ahead without questioning anything, it would have cost me about $1,000 to treat diarrhea for a perfectly healthy, energetic, young dog with a good appetite. Why on earth would he throw everything in the book at him as a first line of defense? That's ridiculous and too expensive. They wanted to do the lab test without even looking at him or asking questions about his appetite, energy, etc. It's a racket. One last thing: When I first got to the office they had me sign paperwork which inlcuded a page-long description and agreement of how not to harass their staff. I thought that was strange, but now I understand why. They must piss off a lot of people. read more

If I could give them negative stars, I would! My dog had an appointment last month because he has skin break outs. I love Dr. Halada and all of his staff except for Kelly. My dog had two shots, an exam, a refill on 2 prescriptions, and a nail trim. I have my dog's nail trimmed when he is groomed, but I use my paw points to have them cut at Mesa, and I let them know that before they cut his nails. When I went to check out, I was a little taken back when I heard the bill amount, $511.51. Kelly was checking me out and I asked about the nail trim and she said I couldn't use my points because of my senior discount and because they price-matched the Simparica Trio Costco price. They charged $34.20 just to trim his nails, and that is with my discount! I told Kelly that I would not have had my dog's nails trimmed if I knew I had to pay that much. She started yelling at me in front of other people in the waiting room! I asked her why she is always so rude to me and she said she was not being rude, but I kept repeating myself and she needed to get the bill paid. I told her I wanted to speak to Dr. Halada and she told me to wait outside. After a few minutes, she told me that Dr. Halada could not talk to me, but he could call me. I said ok. She told me I still needed to pay my bill and asked if I wanted Annika to check me out and I said yes. Then she yelled "we fired you once and we can fire you again! I wasn't aware that I was fired once. So, followed her back into the office and she slammed the door in my face! In a low voice, I told Annika what Kelly had said and then Kelly again yelled, "if you keep being rude to the staff, we will fire you! I am always polite to all the staff and the doctor. There have been other complaints about Kelly in reviews, and several of the people that I referred to Mesa have commented about her rudeness. Honestly, I don't understand why she still works there. I also have read that if you leave a bad review, they will "fire" you. So be it. Their prices have skyrocketed over the last few years, but i always felt my dog was well cared for in the 6+ years I have been bringing my dog to Mesa. But, they won't have to fire me because I am firing them. Dr. Halada is a great Vet, but I will find another. Followup: So, I got my "you're fired" notice stating that I mistreated the staff, which is a lie. As I was looking for my review to update, I found 3 NEW reviews in the past week, all mentioning how great Kelly is. For two of the reviewers, these were their only reviews ever, seems kind of fishy. Two seem to be local and one (who only posted this one review), lives in Sioux Falls, SD. Seems kind of fishy? When I first took my dog there, about 6 years ago, it was really hard to get an appointment. Now, the waiting room is virtually empty. What has changed? Probably people turned off by Kelly's rudeness, along with their skyrocketing prices. One thing they have been good about in the past was matching prices on medication. This last time, they did match Costco's price on Simparica Trio ($130), but reluctantly. I asked the nurse what Mesa Vet's price was and she said $248! Ripoff, maybe? Still, my bill was $511 (for an exam, two shots and meds that have quadrupled in price in the last two years) , and when I tried to ask for a breakdown, Kelly was rude (as always). As I said, stay away. I have sent MANY clients their way, but I am now letting everyone know what crooks they are. What a shame that the owner of the company lets Kelly get away with such rudeness-and she loves to tell to try and embarrass people. Update: I looked for Mesa Vet reviews today and there were several about how rude Kelly is, how she has threatened to call the police on customers, and had her friends from different states post false reviews on how great she is. Charged me $90+ for a visit I called to have change to 2 weeks further out as my dog was having terrible food allergies and I wanted to see if eliminating chicken from his diet helped. The person who changed my office visit didn't cancel the original one so I got charged for both. When you say to move your appointment two weeks later, I assumed the original would be changed to the later date but, the original one was left along with a new one two weeks later. Who does that, scam anyway you look at it and the vet assistant was rude and belligerent so, I'll be taking my business elsewhere. She needs a job where she only works with the animals at a clinic and has no human contact whatsoever. We have had a few emergencies with our little rascals and even though if my was last minute, the doc cared to call personally and get us in and save our little babies. The doctors and entire staff at Mesa Veterinary Hospital are amazing and made the transition for our old boy C.J. Today very sweet and incredibly humane. Sometimes the best thing we can do for our animals is the kindness they deserve to not suffer. Our boy was at peace today and although our hearts are so sad, we feel joy that he like all dogs, went to Heaven where he can once again chase tennis balls and jump high into my mommas arms. This is my 3rd review in the Constipated Kitten saga. So, as life sometimes has it, I end up w/ a 4 week old un-weaned kitten who has been separated permanently from her mom. A few days into the bottle-feeding process, she stops pooping entirely and begins to become distended and lethargic. My old vet isn't able to see her and I've frankly lost confidence in them anyway. I take her to the ER and they take her, clean her out, and hand her back with little feedback. But I'm still a rookie at this and she's quickly constipated again. I decide, even if she does poop tonight, I need her to be seen by a grownup and experienced vet. Her name is Kevin, btw, because she was found by a group of grease monkeys who had just lost their coworker to a tragic accident and they wanted her named after him. (I know, right? What great bunch of dudes...). I called Mesa VH and they got me in early the next morning. They were all SO NICE! And the facility was truly charming and comfortable. I found myself chatting for a while with a woman who was literally crying over her cat with cancer and a couple who had brought in their dog. It was just a very WARM and NURTURING environment for all of us. The old place we had taken our animals to was pretty good, but it always felt a little bit more like an actual human hospital. Cold and sterile and "here's your bill." The folks at Mesa made such a fuss over Kevin! She had ended up pooping the night before so she was all good but she needed the exam and a worming and I was really eager to get established with that clinic for all of my animals. I couldn't believe it. The vet was old-school experience all the way. He and his staff spent like 20-30 mins fussing over Kevin, giving me excellent advice, and sent me home w/ a goody bag of food and flea treatment. The key thing for me here is that all of the employees seemed very happy. Not like they were being forced to provide good customer service but like they were actually happy in their jobs, which means they're being treated well and with respect by their boss. Like they're proud of working there. I was just over the moon with my experience and I look forward to bringing my other pets to their new doc in the future! read more

Be warned: the staff doesn't actually wear masks here. I don't know why that is listed, because they never had them on any time we came in. They also have issues finding my cat in their system and mixed my name up with my cats name. They are overall very disorganized. My cat was seen for a possible UTI I am still worried she may have (she's urinating out of the litter box). They oversold my unsuspecting husband on a homepathic spray (it did nothing) and very pricey cat food we didn't need. They told us "come in anytime for flea drops" and then when we did, we were told to pay a fee to "rush" the flea drops next time. I went to order with Chewy because I've been using them for years. The RX of course was denied and I had to call Mesa Vet to ask why. Then I was lied to and told Chewy was out of stock and we had to use the Mesa Vet online pharmacy. When I went to order, they were out of stock! I called Chewy and found out they were not only NOT out of stock, but Mesa Vet refused to fax the RX and we had to obtain a PAPER copy like we are back in 1995. Every single vet I've ever been to never once had an issue with this. You pay the $100s upfront to have your cat seen, you can take that RX wherever you want. The last straw was the staff lecturing me on the phone about Chewy being a "corporate conglomerate" which is unprofessional and unfair. Some of us aren't privileged enough financially to spend the extra $20-$30 every month (and the shipping takes longer and costs more) to support Mesa Vet's online pharmacy. We have to give these drops to our cat regularly, and we missed doses because this vet was out of stock when we went to order and gave us the runaround about the written RX. I wouldn't trust this vet to take care of my cat if they are this hung up on faxing RXs. We are heading back over to Exotic Pets in Pismo where they treat me with respect and take care of my animals without petty arguments or an office ran by an army of Karens. read more

August 2020: I had a semi emergency and my dog Rokko needed immediate attention. Being new in the area, I had no vet. I checked here on Google and saw all 5 star reviews. Plus it's super close. I called at 8:30 Monday morning and got in at 10:30 am. I was so grateful and Rokko is 100% better now. Highly recommend. November 30, 2021: My Rokko had to be put down on July 16, 2021. What I didn't realize until recently was that Mesa Vet Hospital may have been the only humane veterinarian in all of CA. I was able to go in with Rokko in 2020 and 2021 with my mask on. I was able to hold him as he passed and comfort him. He brother was able to be on the table with him. We were not stuck in the car, alone and waiting for the prognosis and bill. California opened up in June of this year. Why vets are still detaining owners in their vehicles and diagnosing, treating and killing their beloved pets without them present is cruel. It is inhumane and wrong. Kudos to Dr. Hallada for being a renegade. I live in Mexico most of the year. We are allowed to be with our pets and to talk to the vet face to face. Masks on. read more

I've been taking my poodle puppy here ever since I brought her home. She loves everyone from Dr. Hallada to the front desk people to the groomer to everyone go has ever helped take care of her. She gets so excited when I bring her in! I'm almost hesitant to write a glowing review because, while everyone at Mesa Veterinary Hospital has more than earned it, I don't want them to get so busy that they outgrow their location! My mother recommended me to take my dog here. She use to bring our family dog here growing up, before she passed on. My dog was experiencing some digestive minor problems and his allergies. We are new to this area and a neighbor referred us to Mesa Vet. On our first visit I was surprised on much time was spent trying to sell us on products and signing up for their Pet care rewards program. Now, fast forward to three months later when I tried to have a new prescription filled for my dog's flea medicine, and I find out they will not give me a prescription. My previous Vet had no problem with me purchasing Sentinel online. My only option at this point was to purchase Simparica from them for $180, and I was told I would get a $40 dollar rebate. Well, it turns out it's not a rebate, but its a Bonus Rewards in their Petcare Reward program. I've always paid for Sentinel at $50 for six months, but, I guess there is not enough profit for this Vet to carry it. Front desk lady yelled at me! Made me feel horrible. She is the older woman that is always at the reception area desk, raspy voice. They used to be great until they started wanting to sell me more services and I denied them. I was embarrassed in front of other customers because the receptionist made it seem I was being negligent. I had a teeth cleaning done for my dog and they used emotional manipulation to get me to buy more services. The tactical approach is to make you feel uneducated, then sell you the solution. I had already had the blood work done so I was stuck doing the teeth cleaning here. So much passive aggressive energy from the staff. Wish they would educate people instead of shaming. read more

I have spent thousands of dollars over the years at Mesa Vet. I think Dr. Hallada is a wonderful Veterinarain. Very kind and caring. Office staff needs to be taught professional social skills! My dealings with Anika today were very unprofessional as all she could say was to go to another vet.They we're booked! They were short staffed and had been that way for years!!! When I suggested they hire more staff her response was we've been trying for the last three years! I was able to get an appointment for the following morning at Nipomo Dog and Cat Hospital! I first took my senior cat (Butterfly) to Mesa Vet in June 2021. My first experience wasn't the worst, but also not the best. The vet tech who assisted us initially was gentle w/ my cat & was helpful/polite. The tech, Laura, who drew my cats blood was completely unprofessional & rude. She took my cat back (who is 15 years old & needs to be handled gently) & first attempted to draw blood from her neck, which I was told resulted in her being scratched. After being lectured about needing to cut her nails for their safety, I was fine w/ them doing so. It ended up taking about 20 minutes for Laura to draw her blood, which she ended up drawing from Butterfly's inner thigh, which she should have done to begin with. A senior cat, who was showing signs of anxiety ab being at the vet, shouldn't have been manhandled in an attempt to draw blood from her neck, she should have only attempted to draw from her thigh. When they brought Butterfly back to the exam room, she was panting, in distress, & covered in rubbing alcohol, which somehow was spilled all over her back legs, during drawing process. I met w/ Dr. Hallada, & we discussed Butterfly's Thyroid levels, & getting her on a prescription diet to try to help bring her levels down. I was given a refill of her 5mg Methimazole Rx, & that concluded the visit. I did not have any issues with Dr. Hallada, & felt like he explained her lab work explanation well, but apparently there was a miscommunication. I went back for a bloodwork check up/Rx refill for Butterfly today, & was approached by Laura. She asked how often I was giving Butterfly her Rx, & I told her once a day. Which was what the prior vet office I had taken Butterfly to had advised me to do, & what I still believed I was supposed to do. Laura told me that during our last appointment, the doctor made notes in Butterfly's chart that her dose of 5mg Methimazole was supposed to be given 2x daily, as opposed to the 1x per day I was giving it to her. It was also on the Rx bottle label. I advised Laura that it was never discussed during our last visit that Butterfly's dose was supposed to go up. It was in the chart notes, but I was never told. Both my partner & I were at Butterfly's first visit, & neither of us were ever told to raise her dose. I had noticed it on the Rx bottle label, but didn't think much of it, since I was never verbally told by Dr. Hallada to increase her dose, nor was I given any notes from the appt. telling me to do so. Laura proceeded to tell me that even if I was never told verbally to increase Butterfly's dose, that it was written on her label, & that between that & the "12 times she just explained it to me" that it should be clear now, & that we needed to come back in 30 days for new labs, after we give my cat her "proper" dose. I told her that I will not be coming back, & would need a refill to give Butterfly until I am able to find another vet. Upon leaving I spoke with the receptionist, & advised her that during my first visit, I had felt disrespected & that my cat was mishandled by Laura, which I had advised Dr. Hallada of, & that it shouldn't have happened again today. She asked if the interaction I had with Laura in the lobby was what bothered me today, & I said yes. Her response was "Well I witnessed the interaction, & I did not find it disrespectful." After that I said okay, thank you, & left the office. I work in a medical office (for people) & have encountered many pts confused about their Rx, confused about instructions, etc. Sometimes it's the pt not understanding, & sometimes we have miscommunications on our end. Either way, we always treat patients with respect, & acknowledge if we have failed to communicate something, & take responsibility, bc all that matters is the health of the patient. Laura in no way acknowledged me repeatedly saying that we were never advised to change Butterfly's medication by the doctor, & was demeaning, harsh, & unprofessional. The entire experience today was deeply disturbing, & I would not trust Mesa Vet with the health of your pet. read more

My old buddy was getting to be really old, and his health started failing. 3 days without eating despite all efforts to nurse the dog to health, he was telling me it was time to go. 2 other veterinary clinics actually turned me down, but Mesa Veterinary said the schedule was full but understanding it was a quick procedure to put my old pal to sleep, they said they would make sure to fit me in. I said 5pm to have the whole day with him, but he was ready to go by 2:30pm. I drove down to see if we can fit in early. By 3pm the Veterinarian was with my pal, swift and painless injection to let him sleep. It was retail price for the injection, but being so flexible to let my buddy go on his own schedule is priceless. read more

Missy who helped us throughout the entire appointment was helpful, patient and every caring with my dogs which as a dog mom is very important. I don't recommend coming here. They don't wear mask and make you feel uncomfortable. After my dog got her shots I realized that they are overpriced too compared to ther vets in the area. I have decided to go else where and definitely do not recommend coming here. read more
